Book Description
Gosse argued that the world had indeed been created by God in six days, but had made the earth to appear as though it was already ancient, complete with factitious "evidences" of prehistoric life. Gosse's work was popular with neither Christians nor evolutionists.
Customer Reviews:
not for the scientifically uneducated.......2007-04-14
Gosse makes a pre-Darwinian attempt to solve the hen-and-egg riddle. A chick cannot survive without its mommy, he argues, so he opts for the hen.
To account for this, Gosse maintains that the newly created adult animals and plants matured in the mind of God, or in "ideal" or "prochronic" time. The time following the Creation he calls "actual" or "diachronic" time.
Gosse christens his brain-child "prochronism," but it has come to be known as the "Gosse hypothesis" or the "Omphalos hypothesis."
Skeptics admit that this hypothesis is not falsifiable, but point out that it is not verifiable either. Skeptics further suggest that diachronic time could have begun not only in prehistoric times, but at any point in the past. In satire of Gosse's book, these skeptics have coined a hypothesis which they call "last Thursdayism."
You say that your friends and relatives remember sharing an experience with you in years past? I will only say that those witnesses were created last Thursday with memories similar to yours. You say that you have wedding certificates and birth certificates? I will only say that those documents were created last Thursday.
I have found these comments amusing, so I expected the book to be amusing also. I was disappointed. The author goes on a lengthy summary of prehistory which can be followed only a person well-educated in geology. Then he goes on a lengthy description of plant and animal species which only a person well-educated in biology could follow. "Ciliated gemmule"? "Monadiform germ"? No comprendo!
If you really want to learn something about science, this book might be for you. If your motives are insincere, like mine, don't bother.
Valued as a primary source.......2000-07-01
Grosse was apparently the first to publish the idea that God might have created the earth with the appearance of age. For this reason, and its value in understanding the history and philosophy of science, I give the book four stars. Otherwise the book was a good example of nineteenth century scientific writing: too many words, excessive examples and illustrations. There are a few very quotable lines spread throughout the text, but most of the book is redundant.
Omphalos--A Meditation on the Concept of Creation ex nihilo.......2000-04-29
Philip Gosse's little book is a gem of quiet, reverent thinking by a talented biologist. He simply (and unusually, for his age) was courageous enough to ask the question, "how would the earth and all its various interconnected systems look different than they do now, if the world had been created in an instant by a single creative act?" To explore this question, he asks his contemporary young earth creationists to follow him on an imaginative journey back to the very first day of the earth's creation, and he examines the nature of various living things that he sees. Do the trees have rings? Are there seeds just now sprouting from the ground? Do Adam and Eve (and all the mammals) have hair? Teeth? Bones? Belly-buttons?
Every living thing in the world, he begins to prove, is part of an interconnected temporal system, and has a four-dimensional nature that goes to its very core. Nature cannot be created ex nihilo without creating time ex nihilo and nature's whole process "in medias res", so to speak.
This is where Gosse's meditation has been so misunderstood. His argument is that IF the world has been created out of nothing by an act of creative power, AND that event happened recently as his fellow churchmen were fond of claiming, THEN there could be no physical evidence of the point at which that creation took place. To put it crudely, the world is by nature a spinning top, and if it has been created at all, it has been created spinning, and there will be no finger-marks on it, no scars of a sudden acceleration.
Gosse's thoughts were directed at the believers of his time, and were not intended to convert skeptics. It is sad that his prejudice against Darwin and the evolutionists (which he shared with most people of his day, believing and non-believing) has been held against him.
The next step for a 21st century person of belief is to think beyond Gosse about the Big Bang.

Science and Religion.......2004-06-12
I love this story of Philip and Edmund Gosse. There is generational conflict.
Philip Gosse, son of a painter of miniatures, was a miniaturist. As a young man he went from Poole, England to New Foundland for six years and to Alabama for three. In Alabama he taught school. In 1832 he began his entomologic collection.
Philip left his Methodist chapel and joined a small group of Plymouth Brethren. In 1844 Philip was sent to Jamaica. He became a successful writer of scientific books. In 1848 he married Emily Bowes. She fell to writing religious tracts. The son, Edmund, born in 1849, suffered deprivations. He had few toys, no playmates and no reading except for religious tracts and the Bible.
In 1849 Philip purchased a microscope. He grew in knowledge and number of publications and received honors. In 1852 he invented the marine aquarium. In 1857 Philip Gosse sought to present a unified scientific and biblical version of geologic time to refute Darwinism. Before the book's publication his career had met with resounding success. After OMPHALOS he faced failure and ridicule.
The secular education of the son was neglected. Eventually Edmund reacted against the loneliness and religion of his childhood. Edmund became a Bohemian prophet without the taint of Bohemianism it is asserted in the introduction to the book. An American tour made him a public figure. Edmund Gosse's reputation plunged when he was found to have written an error-filled account of Swinburne. He became famous for having Sunday afternoon parties for all of the important people of his day. The introduction to the book by William Irvine claims that Edmund Gosse was inspired to write FATHER AND SON after he wrote a biography of another literary figure, Coventry Patmore.
The book claims to be a record of the struggle of two temperaments. Certainly temperament and spirit are featured notably in the work. Edmund's mother had rigor of spirit. She practiced constant self-denial. She was stronger than her husband.
The parents visited no one. Edmund's mother's brothers visited them. The brothers had been helped through Cambridge by her employment as a teacher at a mouldering Irish estate. The author has the idea that his mother was suited by nature to be a novelist. His mother's death when he was seven left a gap that his father sought to fill.
In his eighth year his father instructed him in the Epistles of the New Testament. The emphasis was doctrinal. The attitude of the father toward natural selection was critical to his career as noted above. After the failure to refute Darwin's theory the family moved to the sea shore. In Devonshire marine creatures were collected and documented by the father. The village in Devon is described as open and squalid. The father's life work was really the practical study of animal forms in detail. The study of British sea anemones was ready for the press in 1859.
Edmund was taught Latin by his father. When Edmund was eleven his father remarried. His father permitted him to read the poems but not the novels of Scott. Then he was allowed to read Dickens. He read PICKWICK with rapture. He was sent to a boarding school run by some Plymouth Brethren. At age fifteen he fell under the spell of Shakespeare. Later the poetry of the Romatic era interested him greatly.
The book is of great interest to us in its sensitive descriptions presented from a child's perspective of a household bereft and subject to religious mania. Since great literature was not presented to Edmund in childhood, evidently his response to it in later life was more acute. Notwithstanding the narrow channels in which his parents exercised their gifts as writers, they transmitted to him through genetic endowment or by example the vocation he was to follow as an adult.

Book Description
"Night-attack of wolves in Mongolia." "Nearly fatal combat with a kangaroo." "Comic scenes with the Elephant." "Captain Herriman examines a supposed Sea-serpent." This charming book, published by British naturalist PHILIP HENRY GOSSE (1810-1888) in 1860, was a best seller in its day, and no wonder: this is a passionate around-the-world journey through nature both wild and serene... and mysterious. "In the annals of cryptozoology," says cryptozoologist Loren Coleman in his new introduction, "Gosse is credited as one of the grandfathers of the discipline... In this book, one finds his records of the sea serpent, giant snakes, African unicorn, South America ape, and Ceylonese devil-bird, reflecting this early interest in romantic zoology, the precursor of cryptozoology." This new edition, complete with the original elegant illustrations, is part of Cosimo's Loren Coleman Presents series. LOREN COLEMAN is author of numerous books of cryptozoology, including BIGFOOT!: The True Story of Apes in America, and Mothman and Other Curious Encounters.

Customer Reviews:
Word to the Wise.......2003-08-18
I visited Kiev were they really only speak Russian. They do speak Ukranian but only in the area that is furthest away from the Russian border. Other than that the book was very good and I really enjoyed the tidbits of information in the book.
A Bargain - Purchase This Book First.......2001-09-12
This little book is terrific for anyone interested in the Ukrainian language. It has very good explanations of the alphabet and grammatical rules of Ukrainian. It also teaches MANY useful phrases and words for the traveler, and it gives phonetic pronunciations of every word and phrase (as well as the actual Cyrillic spelling).
I have a close friend in Ukraine who has told me that my pronunciation of the Ukrainian words (as they appear in this book) are perfect.
However, be certain of your purpose for using this book. If you want to learn to speak the Ukrainian language somewhat fluently, it will take a lot more than this book (but this book is an excellent starting point).
If you are simply planning to travel to one of the major Ukrainian cities (Kiev, Odessa, etc.) in the near future, you would probably be better off with the Russian version of this book instead of Ukrainian. Everybody in the major cities still speaks Russian as their primary language. Most of them understand Ukrainian, but Russian is still the first language for most people. I understand that this is slowly changing (universities, etc. are changing EVERYTHING over to Ukrainian). And if you plan to visit a small town in Ukraine, many of them speak ONLY Ukrainian. My suggestion is to get both the Ukrainian and the Russian versions, so you will be able to communicate clearly no matter where you are.
WONDERFUL RESOURCE!.......2000-10-10
My trip to Ukraine wouldn't have been the same without this wonderful little book. And Ukrainians were flattered that a foreigner tried speaking Ukrainian to them instead of Russian. It contains the phrases you need and easy to understand pronounciation guide. It really helped break the language barrier and I made new friends in a new country. The entire Lonely Planet series is the best among travel guides, and I've travelled a lot using various guides.
A great quick-guide to Ukrainian language and culture........2000-08-30
This pocket guide to Ukrainian was indispensible to me during my two week visit to this country. I carried it with me everywhere I went and consulted it almost constantly. In all that time it was always helpful and accurate. The only time it let me down was in drawing a distinction between a wild rabbit and a domestic one. Each word is given in the Ukrainian Cyrillic spelling and then in a phonetic transliteration with accented syllables in bold. Each section has an introductory piece that gives general background information. Useful phrases and sentences followed by a list of major relevant words complete each section. The end of the book has an English-Ukrainian vocabulary. A Ukrainian-English vocabulary would also have been useful, but would have repeated the vocabularies in each section. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Truly invaluable to the clueless traveler.
Gift for Friend.......2000-01-07
I bought this to give to a friend. However, at work I was working with some Ukrainian ladies who didn't speak English. I brought this in, and it was very useful.

Book Description
Jason is a basketball star and one of the most popular guys in school. Brainy Kyra isn't, but she doesn't much care what other people think. Under normal circumstances, Jason and Kyra would live in their separate worlds until graduation. But fate intervenes, and the unlikely duo is paired up for a class project. Although preconceived notions abound on both sides, Kyra soon realizes that Jason is not the dumb jock she anticipated. And Jason finds himself telling Kyra things he can't even tell his best friend. As the two become close and eventually start to fall in love, no one in school can believe it, especially Jason's ex-girlfriend, who is determined to get him back. Being together means navigating the obstacles that are coming their way-but staying apart may be impossible.
Customer Reviews:
Love AND Basketball.......2007-02-11
We chose to read this story in February because it is a Valentine romance. This story was off the chain!!! It depicted what really happens in a school environment. This is a story of relationships and jealousy. Usually, the basketball jock is on the low end of a GPA, and almost always gets the smartest and prettiest girl in the school. Well, Jason is not only the best looking boy at Cross High and the most talented basketball player in the State of Michigan, but he is also a smart kid with a 3.5 GPA.
Jason & Kyra reminded us the movie, Love and Basketball because they started off as partners on a school assignment, then they became friends, then they became lovers. They're both juniors.
Jason is the hottest guy in the school and Kyra is just cute, but nothing spectacular like Jason's ex-girlfriend, the spoil, self-centered Lisa. Lisa was considered the most beautiful girl at Cross High and she and Jason were a beautiful looking couple, but they weren't right for each other.
Kyra's family was rich. Her Dad was a surgeon and her mother a community services activist. Her Mother was an heir to her family's popular paper products business. But that didn't spoil Kyra or her sister or brother. Kyra was a sweet and loving girl. She had a perfect 4.0 GPA and was a finalist in the Hamilton Science Scholarship. Her entry was a study into the science of diabetes.
Jason was an honest guy. His mother died when he was three and his father was an abusive, alcoholic with a good job. He provided for Jason, but he never showed love to him. He always called him negative names and tried to kill his self-esteem. Jason never told anyone. Not even his best friend, Greg. But he became comfortable enough to share his deepest secrets with Kyra. He trusted her.
Their relationship grew strong and Jason decided he wanted to take it to the next level, intimately. But Kyra was a virgin and she intended on staying one for a while. Lisa and Jason had sex often during their one-year relationship and Lisa missed being with him. Jason broke up with Lisa because he fell in love with Kyra. Lisa was out to break them apart and try to win Jason back. She almost succeeded by plotting a lie that she and Jason were still sexually active and Kyra thought it was true so she broke up with Jason. When she found out that it wasn't true, she wanted Jason back but he couldn't trust Kyra. But in the end, their love prevailed and they got back happily together forever after. The End.
The only drawback to this story was that they explored each other's body totally, which is like playing with fire. He even laid on top of her naked which was dangerous because even if a girl have sex with her underwear on, the underwear is made of nylon or cotton and semen can seep through and she could've gotten pregnant.
The premise of the story is that you must stick to your guns and beliefs and if you are in a relationship, you need to trust your guy (that is if he's a good guy) or at least keep all lines of communication open. This book was so good! The drama was off the chain! We highly recommend this book to all teens.

Jason & Kyra By: Dana Davidson.......2007-01-22
Jason & Kyra by: Dana Davidson
-Jason, the most popular and hottest boy at Cross High School going out with Kyra, the quiet nerd who's nickname is `nappy head.' That cannot even be possible. Well, in the book Jason & Kyra by Dana Davidson, she creates a teen love story that does just that. Jason and Kyra seem like two different types of people who would never get along, however, when their teacher assigns them a project together, they find out they have more in common then they've ever knew. Soon their relationship grows stronger and stronger for each other each day and they begin to go out. However, how will the rest of the school react to their relationship including Jason's ex-girlfriend Lisa who is the most popular girl at school? Jason & Kyra go through a rollercoaster of emotions as people try to pry through their relationship by jealousy and rumors. I loved this book for its characters, how Dana Davidson wrote the story, and the theme.
-The characters in the book are very interesting and funny.
Jason is a typical jock but he likes to show that he knows what going on in the basketball world, but also the political world. Kyra is a shy girl that is very smart and does not really care what people think about her. Greg is Jason's best friend who was skeptical about Jason being with Kyra but once he got to know her, he was very supportive. Finally, Lisa is Jason's ex-girlfriend that will do anything to get her man back. Not only did she think of a plot to end Kyra and Jason's relationship but also was very scandalous about how she tried to lure Jason back to her.
-Next, the way Dana Davidson wrote the book, it made me feel connected to the whole plot. When Jason and Kyra started to go out with each other, it seemed like a very unlikely couple that was totally fiction. However, as the book goes on, you see how Jason and Kyra struggle to stay together and trying to not to let the rumors keep them apart. I felt connected because every one has been a situation where no one really supported your decision and you felt you had to prove that your decision was the best. Nobody really supported Kyra and Jason's relationship and they had show people that no matter what happened that they were going to remain together.
-Finally, I loved the final theme of the whole book, simply follow your heart. No matter what people say about what you are doing or plan to do, follow your heart and do not let anyone in your way. Jason knew that everyone was going to be appalled that he was going with a `nerd,' but he did not see her that way, he saw what was inside of her instead of out. Kyra knew that many girls were going to be jealous and resentful of her relationship. However, she did not see Jason as just the hottest basketball player and best dress, she saw him as a versatile person who was as smart as he was cute.
-I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend this book for people who enjoy a hopeless romantic book. This book will not only leave you wanting for more, but to never put the book down.

A very tender love story.......2007-01-10
I personally read this book, and found it a very sweet tender young love story, one I think alot of young teens should read. Not just girls, I think it shows a tender side of a young man one we don't get to read about that often.
LOVE AND LIFE.......2006-10-10
As he walks down the halls of Cross High School he feels like a star as the students act like paparazzi. Jason is the most popular guy at school and also the star athlete on the basketball team at Cross High School. Every girl wants to be his but the lucky one is Lisa. Lisa is the girl that every guy wants. In the first day of school Jason meets a girl named Kyra in his A.P English class. Kyra is not the typical popular type Jason is used to hanging out with. Kyra is nice and classy, but not at all hip. When Jason and Kyra are assigned partners for a class project their thoughts of one another quickly change. As they start hanging out more and more the tension get heated. They have lots of chemistry and Jason is really into her. He likes her so much he is willing to break up with Lisa to start a relationship with Kyra. After their first date they kiss. Kyra forces Jason to tell Lisa now. Meanwhile Kyra has to finish her big science project for a competition she's in. When Valentine's Day comes Jason is having a huge party. When Lisa's Jealousy kicks in she purposely make sure Kyra over hears a conversation she is having with her friends. She talks about how Jason said he wants her back which happens to be a big lie. When Kyra hears this she instantly is hurt and leaves Jason. Jason can't believe she trusted Lisa and is brought to tears when he finds out. While Kyra is finishing her project, Jason has to compete in the championship game. When Kyra's big day finally comes Jason rushes not to miss it. Kyra ends up winning and is happy when she sees Jason in the crowd. When they finally talk they decide to get back together. This book was amazing! I loved everything about it. I highly recommend this book to people who enjoy love stories. Its also a good book If you like books that talk about things that happen in your everyday life and informs you about teenage life this is a good book for you.
Jason and Kyra was one of the best love stories I've read. It was a gret love story because it had emotional parts. It had parts that could make you cry. It had part that could make you sad. It had parts that made you laugh, and pats that made you angry. All theses emotions are emotions that Jason and Kyra felt through the entire story as they went through the good things and bad things in their relationship. As the experienced these emotions they fell in love with one another.
In this book it has event that happen in your typical every day life. In the real world you can't judge people by first impressions. In Jason and Kyra Jason and Kyra both judge each other by first impressions, but in the end they end up being in love with each other. Other thing that people do often is believe every thing someone tells them. In this book Kyra believed that Lisa was being truthful about Jason wanted her back, turns out she was lying.
This book has things about the typical teenage life. Teenagers are always experiencing love problems, judging each other, and doing cruel things to each over boys. In Jason and Kyra they both experienced lots of love and emotional problems with each other. Also in this book Kyra and Jason judge each other on first impressions. In this book Lisa decided to lie to Kyra because oh her jealousy.
This book was an overall enjoying book. I would love to read more books like this. Books like this may help teenagers when it comes to certain everyday issues. I recommend this book this book to teenagers who would enjoy reading things that would happen to them, also to people who enjoy love stories.

Great book.......2006-09-25
My 15 year old daughter loved this book. It's hard to find good books featuring black characters that doesn't involve drugs, rape, gangs, and all the other sterotypes about blacks. Both characters in this book also have working, professional parents. My daughter has also read Dana Davidson's other book, Played, and loved that one as well. It's safe to say that she can't wait until Mrs. Davidson writes and releases another one. As her mom, I've read both books too just so I know what my child is reading. It was good reading and made me wish they had these books when I was younger. Instead all I had were romance books with no characters that looked or acted like me. The females in this book are also smart and average looking so that makes it even better.
