Wetlands overview.......2007-03-29
Clearly explained wetland designations and issues. Good in preparation for the LARE exams part B.
Where Physical Geography & Env. Planning share common ground.......2004-12-17
This may be one of the best introductions to environmental planning for geography students interested in the application of physical geographic techniques. When inquiring minds ask how a Geography major like myself ended up doing septic plan review as a county Environmental Health Specialist I simply point to Marsh's chapter on waste disposal and describe the necessary physical parameters familiar to physical geographers (soil types and percolation rates, groundwater levels, slopes and topography, surface water, geohazards, mapping, etc). There is something for everybody in this book and you don't have to be a geography major to benefit. A very practical text.
Environmental Planning.......2003-11-26
I am a student in environmental planning and have found this book to be extremely useful. It address a variey of things such as watershed, storm discharge, streamflow, etc. It really gives the reader an idea of how to design with nature.
Great book.......1999-12-26
This book was a great tool for the beginning landscape architect. Many great tools for land planning including equations and tables and charts to determine various things like water runoff, erosion, sun exposure, and much more.

Book Description
Research policy favours projects that integrate disciplinary knowledge and involve non-academic stakeholders. Consequently, integrative concepts â interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity â are gaining currency in landscape research and planning. Researchers are excited by the prospect of merging disciplinary and non-academic expertise to improve their understanding and performance, but often struggle with the challenges of operationalizing integration.
This book provides guidelines for those coping with these challenges, whether they are members of an integrative research team or individuals working on a problem that demands integration. They must define terminology, choose appropriate methodologies, overcome epistemological barriers and cope with the high expectations of some stakeholders while encouraging others to participate at all.
The book deals with the development of integrative theory and concepts, the development of integrative tools and methods, training and education for integration, and the application of integrative concepts in landscape research. As it also presents examples of successful integrative PhD studies, it is not only valuable for experienced scientists but will also help other PhD students find their way in integrative research.

Description:
After a short introduction on approaches using either structural or functional indicators, we develop a methodological framework for the analysis and management of landscapes, using landscape ecological principles related to a holistic approach. In a next step, we disaggregate some of the internal processes in landscapes in order to delineate groups of indicators in its spatio-temporal context. In a case study, conducted in an area in Central Italy, the use of some landscape ecological indicators is presented. It is an example of how a set of indicators can be applied to a part of the landscape, which is considered as a whole or integrated unit, according to the principles of landscape ecology. On the basis of four landscape metrics out of eight, calculated in a Geographical Information System (GIS), we present potential areas for greenways in our study area of 16,000ha in a scale of 1:25,000. The results are directed to landscape planning and management and are, therefore, of particular interest not only from a scientific point of view, but also regarding land use planning by local administrators. Due to limitations in achieving more indicators, especially for the interrelation between ecology and socio-economy, the study group expresses the clear need for further refinement of this excellent analytical and management instrument with a special focus on integrated indicators.

Description:
This paper presents the findings of an investigation into the role and use of landscape visualization software for landscape and environmental planning in Germany. It examines the challenges and requirements of 3D visualization technology and its potential for application in landscape and environmental planning. Relevant literature and comparable surveys are reviewed in order to determine the current state of affairs, and the general and international relevance of the results is assessed. In 2000, a survey of user requirements for 3D landscape simulation software, including the demand for specific features, was conducted within the framework of a feasibility study for a visualization tool. As part of the German-wide survey, comprehensive questionnaires were sent to 1044 respondents from a pool of private landscape planning consultancies, freelance landscape architects, and public planning and environmental authorities. The survey showed that 3D landscape visualization has a positive image in Germany, both among user and non-user groups of visualization tools. Twenty-eight percent of private consultancies and freelance landscape architects, as well as 7% of public authorities, stated that they already used 3D simulation software. Those respondents who did not use 3D simulation software cited insufficient computer equipment, lack of technical expertise of planners and cost-related aspects as reasons for not yet having adopted the technology. ''Ease of learning'' and ''interoperability'' are deemed to be the most important features of 3D simulation software, whereas factors such as ''high interactivity'', ''representability of ecological processes'' and ''photo-realism'' are, surprisingly, regarded as much less important. Users of 3D visualization software are particularly concerned by insufficient representation of plants and habitats in simulations. Looking to the future, the vast majority of respondents (91%) expect increased benefits for landscape planning from 3D visualization software, are convinced of the advantages of the technology, and are eager to integrate 3D landscape visualizations into their working practices.

Book Description
During one day at school, the paths of four teens will cross in ways they never imagined. There's Kurt, the "freek" who tries desperately to escape bullying; Tisha, who doesn't feel she fits in with anyone; Ryan, the football jock who rules the hallways while losing control of his life; and Floater, who uses his connections to gain dangerous power. On this day, teasing, racism, loneliness, and secrets bring each of them to the breaking point. Now they must help each other prevent a tragedy. The voices of these four teens weave together in prose-poetry to create a powerful read.

Soft Porn for Kids.......2007-10-11
My daughter approached me the other afternoon, this book in hand and said, "I don't think I can read this." After reading the less than 50 pages she had already been subject to, I agreed.
The book reviews say nothing of Ryan's describing sex with his girlfriend and planning sex with another girl as well as the accusation of rape from yet a third girl. All these sex acts take place on school grounds, during school hours. When I showed it to my daughter's school librarian and principle, it was immediately removed from the library.
Profanity is used throughout the book. Add that to the "adult content" and school violence themes and the book read more like a hustler meets Tom Clancy book.
I think the story could have been told just as effectively without these elements and themes. Our children can be knowledgeable about these subjects without having to read vivid descriptions of the acts themselves.
Regardless, the book--being sold as a "young adult" novel--is more suited to 11th and 12th graders rather than the 6th-8th grade books.
Almost all entertainment (movies, television program, music, even video games) require the purchaser to be aware of adult content, nudity, language, and violence, hence warning labels. This "young adult" book requires a big one, right on the front.
Excellent.......2007-08-11
My daughter wanted this book and she could not put this book down. She loves to read but I've never seen her so engrossed in a book. Kuddos!
Shakes you to the Core.......2006-07-27
Written in prose, this novel takes no prisoners as we are transported to a high school that is and could be Anywhere.
Kurt the "freek"; Tisha the "biracial"; Ryan the "All-American boy" with a secret; and Floater, the one who spys on his fellow teens for the principal. Each one is different, but they all have problems, and each will play a role in a memorable day at their high school. Even the students who seem like they have it all don't, and the ones that are the "losers" can be winners. In the face of all the school violence we have had, I think there need to be more books like this, ones that show the true side of things.
A Book You Have To Read........2006-05-24
One year has passed since the death of a fellow high school student.
This book takes you inside the lives of four high school seniors for one day.
Ryan, The "Jock", who thinks he is everything, loves girls; yet faces an abusive dad.
Kurt, The "Outcast", who always gets beat up; but keeps the anger bottled inside himself, while dealing with a neglecting family.
Tisha, The "Bi-Racial, who's smart, has a best friend and a good family; but faces racist remarks and actions by other students.
Mark "Floater", the "Snitch" who works for the principal, telling him everything happening in school; but his lust for power and popularity will be his greatest downfall.
You learn so much about these four students and what they have to go through each day, but on this fateful day, another tragic event will happen.
What and who is affected?
The shocking climax and resolution made this one of the best books I've ever read in my book.
Not only does it have great character developement, but it makes you feel like you are right there watching them.
I hope the author makes many more books like this because I will be reading thing.
5/5

Names Will Never Hurt Me
By Jaime Adoff
Reviewed by Spencer
This book takes place in current time at a high school where one year ago, a murder in the school occurred. There are four main characters, Ryan, Kurt, Tisha and Floater (Mark.) Kurt and Tisha are low on the social scale. While Ryan is higher on the scale, pretty close to the top and finally there is Floater at the very top. This book takes place over one school day and each person problem has there own problem except for Floater. But Floater can make or stop any of their problems because he is the "principals in" on what is happening in the school during the day. The only way for them to get rid of there is to work with Floater and each other.
This book is very interesting and is "suck you in" kind of reading. The thing that makes it interesting is that there are four stories that finally combine into a monstrosity of problems with an odd ending. Also in the beginning it is hard to know who is talking and what is going on. They are always transferring between people and their stories. The overall thought of the book is very high and extensive.
