Book Description
A Platonic philosopher, Paracelsian chemist, Ovidian poet, and devoted family man, Tycho Brahe was the last Renaissance man and the first great organizer of modern science. This book provides the fullest portrait available of the research and cultural interests of the man who became the premier patron-practitioner of science in sixteenth-century Europe. Starting from Brahe's well reputed role of astronomer, author Christianson adds lesser known details of the man who was both a geodetic surveyor as well as a garden designer, and ultimately established a new role of scientist as administrator, active reformer, and natural philosopher. Coverage reveals how from his private island in Denmark, Brahe used patronage, printing, friendship, and marriage to incorporate men and women skilled in science, technology, and the fine arts into his program of cosmic reform. Through their teamwork, they achieved breakthroughs in astronomy, scientific method, and research organization that were essential to the birth of modern science. Also included are over 100 capsule biographies of Tycho's clients, coworkers, and friends, including Johannes Kepler, Willebrord Snel, Willem Blaeu, several bishops, and numerous technical specialists all of whom helped shape the culture of the Scientific Revolution. This pioneering exposition will appeal to science history buffs, especially those with an interest in the late Renaissance and will inspire anyone who has a passion for science and a penchant for the world of ideas. John Robert Christianson received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He was dubbed Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit by King Harald II in 1995.

A fascinating and scholarly study of Tycho Brahe........2000-05-09
16th century scientist Tycho Brahe receives relatively little mention in modern times: this explores his entire range of scientific activities which go beyond his better-known astronomical explorations. A well-rounded portrait of Brahe the man as well as his many scientific interests and his works on his private island is presented in a study which includes intriguing facts on his contemporaries.

An excellent book about the birth of big science.......2000-04-20
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Christianson's book about Tycho and the birth of Big Science on the Danish Renaissance island of Hven. The writing is fresh and interesting, the details of daily life are lively, the discussions of patronage and scientific method offer new insight into the pre-telescopic world of astronomy. The illustrations are excellent. The discussions of alchemy and astrology are facinating. I especially liked the story of Tycho's sister's sad romance and his daughter's failed engagement. The biographies of Tycho's "students" and their lives after Hven show the influences of his scientific method and the international character of the scientific world in the 16th and early 17th century. Highly reccommended.
A great combination of science and history.......2000-03-29
I found this book to be readable and informative. As a scientist and a history buff, I enjoyed Christianson's ability to combine the story of the birth of big science with the interesting details of Northern European Rennaisance life. Tycho's Island includes a cast of interesting characters, some who became the stars of the next generation of scientists and astronomers, some who were mapmakers, instrument makers, even printers and papermakers. The book also includes a picture of Rennaisance life that makes Tycho and his familia come alive to the modern reader. The details of marriage negotiations, castle building, entertaining and poetry makes the book a real page-turner. The short capsule biographies at the end of the book show the widespread influences of Tycho's brilliant work. Kepler may be the best-known member of this group of assistants, but he is just one of a number of interesting and important characters.
On Tycho's Island is still on the island..........2000-03-25
While the author has obviously gathered TONS and TONS of tidbits and certainly has an indepth knowledge of this subject, the communication broke down somewhere in the process of gluing it all together into a book. The first half of the book is interesting if you can get past all of the redundant statements and amazing overuse of the word familia (in annoying italics) to describe Tycho's operating principles on his island. If you are totally unfamiliar with how life was during this time, it may be eye opening, however, if you have read anything about it, it may be eyeclosing. Each chapter in part 1 seemed to loop around itself, just presenting enough new material to prevent me from putting it down for good. Perhaps the best of this book is part 2 where the author gives thumbnail sketches of the people he was associated with and worked with on his island of Hven. I felt that it was much more connected and definitely less repetitive. However, I wasn't really looking for a collection of micro-biographies when I purchased this book.

The islands of Campbell's title are not necessarily sea-encircled places, but endangered landscapes surrounded by sweeping ecological transformation: the Everglades, the Brazilian rainforest, streams in Arizona, prairies in Canada. Touring these, we learn about complex issues like "integrated ecosystem management" and the theory of island biogeography, which holds, in part, that the rate of species divergence is directly related to the size of a given ecosystem. The heavily illustrated book, sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, makes a solid argument for the preservation of large and diverse wilderness areas.

Book Description
Over the second half of the twentieth century, a substantial flow of writing emerged from the French-held Caribbean. Much of this work is both theoretically knowing and poetically potent and has attracted international attention to the literary resonances of the uniquely complex geo-historical situation of the Caribbean, and indeed of the Americas in general. Much of its passion, pertinence, and appeal inheres in its approach to time and to space, an approach still reverberating with the shock of displacement and its various after-tremors: an exploded sense of diversity; radical relativization; the profound expropriations of enslavement; colonial erosion. Through readings of high-profile as well as lesser known writing, this book tracks some of the more striking tensions and tropisms at work in the French Caribbean imagination of space and time and their intersection. It studies generic interplay, textual palimpseste, narrative structure, and other dynamics of writing that realize and manipulate the intersections of time and space, history and memory, writing and rewriting, voice and text, referential space and (inter)textual space, as well as cultural theory and literary practice, identity and difference, place and displacement. In this way, it probes both the strains and the stresses, and also the insights and gravitations that make for the particular 'French Caribbean' timbre of this volume of writing. This specific vibration, while illuminating Caribbean, New World, and post-colonial thinking in general, also encourages wider reflection on global resonances of displacement and dislocation and on more general issues such as the role of writing, and of narrative in particular, in the confrontation of absence and presence, loss and desire, distance and diversity. This book locates the problematic of time/space in relation to historiographical, geo-cultural, and phenomenological thinking and it also takes account of the detonation of critical interest in what is broadly termed post-colonial writing. Its fundamental concern, however, is to show how a particular corpus of writing has, in the space of half a century, and from a bracing position of hyper-relationality, responded imaginatively and poetically to the challenge of envisioning place, and of relating space to time.

Customer Reviews:
Best Guide for Traveling Ireland.......2003-05-01
I've tried different guides and I found I come back to the Frommer Guide. It contains more information that comprehensive and complete. Except maybe a few omissions. The [dollar amount] a day guide is handy for the thrifty traveler. It will help you find affordable accommodations and restaurants. My suggestion is if you're in Dublin be careful of some high prices. Sometimes it's best to check with the Tourist Board for the local budget fare. Most of the best bargains I found were by exploring the city. Most low prices are in the pubs and near the Temple Bar area. All the other places around Ireland are fairly reasonable. The guide contains lists of maps with two color city and regional maps, plus a large pullout road map. Also has tips for the best places and activities, and planning an affordable trip. All prices may vary though due to the High Season (Summer-higher prices) or the Low Season (Fall-Winter-lower prices). So the prices in the book is not always a reliable source. You may want to inquire. The book is sectioned by each county in the Irish Republic including Northern Ireland. Each attraction and establishment has description, address, contact and road information. There's a handy appendix to get an in-depth look at Ireland's history, folklore, music and food & drink. This is just about everything you need for a memorable and inexpensive trip.
Basically Good Guide, But A Couple of Misses.......2002-12-30
This guide gives you pretty much what you're looking for in a guide... it lists the sites, gives recommendations on what you should see and miss, it also gives detailed information on how to reach where you're going by car, rail, bus, or plane. It's very similar in material and detail to the Lonely Planet Ireland guide... the difference, though, is that this guide has more information on activities such as walking, bicycling, birdwatching, swimming etc. where available. You should know two things, however that may sway your decision about this guide: #1) Absolutely no pictures.. if you need a guide with tons of pictures, get the Eyewitness Guide along with either this one or Lonely Planet to fill the gaps in the Eyewitness. #2) I was hoping for more recommendations for budget lodging. It usually only has a handful per town.. and some are not that reasonable. If this is because there are no cheap accomodations in most of the towns, that's fine. But the book IS called Ireland from $60 A Day, afterall. Maybe it should be called Ireland from $60 A Day, If You're Lucky and Go In the Off Season, But Really Be Prepared to Much Spend More Than That, Especially in Dublin. OK, maybe not. Hope this helps!
extremely helpful!.......2001-03-14
i would recommend this book to anyone planning on traveling to ireland on a budget. the price comparisons from city to city are extremely helpful, as is the recommendations on areas to avoid if you're trying to avoid overly-touristy destinations. recommendations for low-cost travel agencies are accurate and helpful as well. my only gripe was the lack of photographs to give an idea of the places the book is describing, but the information more than makes up for the lack of images.

Customer Reviews:
The Exciting Series of Mates, Dates, and Cosmic Kisses.......2005-10-31
The Exciting Series of Mates, Dates, and Cosmic Kisses is written by Cathy Hopkins. If you like girly real fiction books, this is the book for you! Have you ever lost your mind over a boy? Well Izzie Foster is just now going through this experience. Izzie Foster is a fourteen year old boy crazy girl who losses her mind over a guy, her friends try to bring her back to reality. But as we all know there are some things a girl just doesn't want to hear. Can her friends bring back the old Izzie or is she gone forever?
This book really taught me a lesson because as people always say boys will stay and go but friends will always be by your side. The girls Izzie, Nesta, and Lucy always were in arguments but they figured how to get through the tough times and stuck together. This taught me that I need to be strong for my friends when they are in need. The problem usually with boys is they never call or forget about you, and this book was so realistic that those "boy" problems kept happening over and over and you wanted a new problem to occur. Everyone wants a friend that will protect them and help them when things are going wrong. Lucy was the kind of girl that knew what was right for her and her friends and was the strong one in the trio and really made sure they were all alright.
A book has to have a saying that makes you think or really touches you, and this book had many. My favorite out of the book was "I'm good, I'm bad, you're nice, you're mad, I love, I hate. But it's never too late to say sorry." That is true because that happens in real life and people need to know what they did was bad, but that they can sorry. This book is really fun and exciting and like I already said teaches you tons of lessons. The only question I have to ask myself after reading this book was do the girls know that friends will stay and always be there and help you out through trouble? I really recommend this book to girls because it is fantastic and I never could take my eyes off the book.
really good series!!.......2005-06-14
This is the second book in the Mates, Dates series and it is about Izzie. She meets a cute boy, Mark, and gives him her number and he says he will call, and she stays home as much as she can and keeps the phone lines open, but he never calls. When she bumps into him at the park, he gives her a reasonable excuse and then they spend the day together and he says he will call again. Then the same thing happens, he doesnt call. Izzie is getting tired of all of this waiting and while giving some advice to Lucy about calling the shots with the boys instead of letting them push you around, she realizes what to do. This book and the rest of the series are really good books so read them!!!
Poorly written..........2005-03-20
I got this book for my young teenage daughter who enjoyed the Princess Diaries books & was looking for similar "fluffy" teen books. Both she & I found this book impossible to read beyond the first chapter because the quality of the writing was so poor that it was distracting. Boring, too. Instead of this book, my daughter would recommend The Princess Bride (Goldman) and more Meg Cabot books such as All American Girl and the Mediator series (book #1 is Shadowland).
Not that good..........2004-12-17
Title says it all. However, that is juust my opibion. Read it to find out if you like it/or not.Kind of like On the Bright Side... which was a better book.
Great series!.......2004-09-16
Though I'm older than the target audience, I really enjoy this series. I think the books are adorable and the author does a bang up job of capturing what teenage life is life. Bravo!

Love all of them!.......2006-07-14
The first 4 books from the series are the best! Buy them!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent series for young teens.......2006-05-11
As i bookseller with specialty in kids and teens, I must really give this series the "thumbs up"!
They are great "light reading", but with substantial contents for their target group. A series with all the right messages - trust in yourself, value your good friendships, be your own person, don't succumb to group pressure etc. BUT they are not annoyingly politically correct, and they are written in a way that will appeal to most age 11-14 girls.
They deal with friendships, first loves, puberty, parents, siblings, school and issues like 'what am I good at' and 'what do I want to be professionally' etc.
The first 6 books are narrated by 4 different girls (who are all friends), which gives a good insight to how different girls in a group see, react towards and percieve the various situations and issues.
Reading "guidelines":
The first five books are good from age 11 and up, from book six the girls mature somewhat and, depending on the individual of course, readers should be a year or two older.
Love These!.......2006-04-15
Cathy Hopkins is wonderful. These books are really good. Designer Divas is my favorite. I love Lucy, Nesta, and Toby. I could read these all day! They're awesome! Almost as good as Jacquline Wilson. Read them NOW! I order you : )!
