There is no one in contemporary literature quite like Barbara Kingsolver. Her dialogue sparkles with sassy wit and earthy poetry; her descriptions are rooted in daily life but are also on familiar terms with the eternal. With Prodigal Summer, she returns from the Congo to a "wrinkle on the map that lies between farms and wildness." And there, in an isolated pocket of southern Appalachia, she recounts not one but three intricate stories.
Exuberant, lush, riotous--the summer of the novel is "the season of extravagant procreation" in which bullfrogs carelessly lay their jellied masses of eggs in the grass, "apparently confident that their tadpoles would be able to swim through the lawn like little sperms," and in which a woman may learn to "tell time with her skin." It is also the summer in which a family of coyotes moves into the mountains above Zebulon Valley:
The ghost of a creature long extinct was coming in on silent footprints, returning to the place it had once held in the complex anatomy of this forest like a beating heart returned to its body. This is what she believed she would see, if she watched, at this magical juncture: a restoration.
The "she" is Deanna Wolfe, a wildlife biologist observing the coyotes from her isolated aerie--isolated, that is, until the arrival of a young hunter who makes her even more aware of the truth that humans are only an infinitesimal portion in the ecological balance. This truth forms the axis around which the other two narratives revolve: the story of a city girl, entomologist, and new widow and her efforts to find a place for herself; and the story of Garnett Walker and Nannie Rawley, who seem bent on thrashing out the countless intimate lessons of biology as only an irascible traditional farmer and a devotee of organic agriculture can. As Nannie lectures Garnett, "Everything alive is connected to every other by fine, invisible threads. Things you don't see can help you plenty, and things you try to control will often rear back and bite you, and that's the moral of the story."
Structurally, that gossamer web is the story: images, phrases, and events link the narratives, and these echoes are rarely obvious, always serendipitous. Kingsolver is one of those authors for whom the terrifying elegance of nature is both aesthetic wonder and source of a fierce and abiding moral vision. She may have inherited Thoreau's mantle, but she piles up riches of her own making, blending her extravagant narrative gift with benevolent concise humor. She treads the line between the sentimental and the glorious like nobody else in American literature. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
Barbara Kingsolver, a writer praised for her"extravagantly gifted narrative voice" (New York Times Book Review), has created with this novel a hymn to wildness that celebrates the prodigal spirit of human nature, and of nature itself.
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives inhabiting the forested mountains and struggling small farms of southern Appalachia. At the heart of these intertwined narratives is a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches the forest from her outpost in an isolated mountain cabin where she is caught off-guard by Eddie Bondo, a young hunter who comes to invade her most private spaces and confound her self-assured, solitary life. On a farm several miles down the mountain, another web of lives unfolds as Lusa Maluf Landowski, a bookish city girl turned farmer's wife, finds herself unexpectedly marooned in a strange place where she must declare or lose her attachment to the land. And a few more miles down the road, a pair of elderly, feuding neighbors tend their respective farms and wrangle about God, pesticides, and the complexities of a world neither of them expected.
Over the course of one humid summer, as the urge to procreate overtakes a green and profligate countryside, these characters find connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with which they necessarily share a place. Their discoveries are embedded inside countless intimate lessons of biology, the realities of small farming, and the final, urgent truth that humans are only one part of life on earth.
With the richness that characterizes Barbara Kingsolver's finest work, Prodigal Summer embraces pure thematic originality and demonstrates a balance of narrative and ideas that only an accomplished novelist could render so beautifully.
Customer Reviews:
A Real 'Chestnut' - Paints the Appalachian Life with a Blend of Characters.......2007-10-09
After reading the Poisonwood Bible- which I loved- I picked up this novel as the next one to read by the same great author. I was delighted by Kingsolver's description of the three inter-woven stories that blend human nature with mother nature. Kingsolver's compelling storytelling gives the southern Appalachian mountain range center stage for the characters to come to life. I could easily picture the Appalachia forest, the hollows and vales that surround the little community of Egg Creek, and it was a visual delight.
The lives of the characters intertwine with both the topography and the shared family connections that are revealed in due time as the story plays out. It took some time to unravel the many members of Lusa's family, but eventually they came together. I laughed out loud at Nannie Rawley and Garnett- the two bickering old folks who stubbornly fought each others diametric opinions only to find common ground in the end. I can still picture with great amusement of Garnett dragging himself through the muck, thinking he was having a heart attack only to be humiliated by Nanny who informs him that he has a snapping turtle clamped onto his leg as he struggles to get away, with his pride injured.
Yes, I'm sure Ms. Kingsolver had an agenda about how mankind has altered nature and upset the natural balance, but it stuck with me. It made me think just how delicate and easily the chain of wildlife could be disrupted by man's attempt to challenge the innate certainty of what his view of "order" should be. By the end of the book I felt the arch of the story had come full circle to complete the closure of the 3 interwoven stories. I finished the book feeling satisfied and contented.
Then I baked a blackberry pie and started at the beginning again.
Think organic!!!
Amazing Language and Weaving of a Story.......2007-10-04
I have been a fan of Barbara Kingsolver ever since I stumbled across her book "The Bean Trees" in the public library when I was about 15. This book is certainly as amazing as any of her other work I have read.
What I was immediately struck by was the amazing use of language that Kingsolver has. Her masterful use of words slows you down and you want to save them. There is something sexy about the way she describes nature.
Not only is the use of words wonderful, but the writing is clever. Kingsolver uses nature as a backdrop to compare and contrast the various relationships she has created; the various narrators that she uses.
I also enjoyed that we, the readers, know more about the characters than they do. She leaves the characters with their futures waiting and while I would love to know more about them, I was still satisifed with the end.
Terrific Read.
Nature at its most real and poetic.......2007-09-04
Barbara Kingsolver has a way with words, the words that describe nature, give it life, give it a personality of its own. Nature is a main character, a life force, and important lessons are learned from this novel. A lovely read.
Nature thrives in this wonderful story.......2007-08-28
Once I read Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible", I began reading all her books. The Prodigal Summer was a bit of a let down for me. It was a wonderful story, but I didn't think it was up to her standard. Normally, her characters are well-developed but in this story they just seemed to be lost in the message of organic farming and other environmental issues by the author. These are important subjects and they are told very well as only the biologist writer can do. However, these issues just came across as a bit too patronizing and relationship that I had hoped would develop with the characters just seemed to be fuzzy. Still, the book was an excellent read. There was a bit good humor, an unbelievable insight into the feelings and emotions of women and a priceless education and view of the world of nature. All this rolled up into a wonderful story.
Oh my the misery!!!.......2007-08-19
This book is long, boring and way too verbose!! I read this book for my bookclub and it was torture. I would skip pages, where the author went on and on and on...way too verbose.
This one's worth skipping!!

Years ago, Anna Wall escaped the confines of Bitter Creek, Virginia to become a successful chef. When a family emergency calls Anna back to her hometown, her life will change forever. Anna finds her Great Aunt Berta living in a ramshackle cabin, surrounded by fifty acres of prime hardwood forest that a development company insists on purchasing. The old woman defends her land with courage and a shotgun, but time is running out. She needs to impart her knowledge of herbal medicine and mystical gypsy practices to her niece before it's too late. The skeptical Anna must accept her aunt's teachings and adopt the mantle of her mysterious Melungeon ancestry if they are to save the land from destruction. When Anna joins forces with Aunt Berta she becomes the enemy's new target and the talk of the town. An Appalachian Summer is a love story and a coming of age story that shows us what can happen when we trust our hearts. This is Southern mountain story telling at its finest. A melody of anticipation and longing sung by characters you won't forget.

an appalachian summer.......2007-03-15
I totally enjoyed An Appalachian Summer. It is a delicious mixture of folklore, romance, intrigue, activism and food. The story unfolds and commands your attention via language and detail. Ms. Collier takes the reader into Appalachia.
Take a quick trip to Virginia.......2007-02-08
Just finished Appalachian Summer and had a hard time putting it down. I felt like I had been transported to Virginia for a quick summer trip with a complete immersion into the culture, language and character of the place. The characters were well-formed and the story-line unique and captivating. It kept me guessing until the end with several twists and turns. Can't wait for the next installment to revisit the town and its people. I'd love that cookbook, too!

Book Description
Celebrated architectural writer Francis Morrone returns with a guide to one of the nation's most historical cities--Philadelphia. In addition to including architectural, artistic, and historical insight on its characterizing landmarks, the guide embraces the reader in a quest to realize the city's mysterious legacy--the dichotomous character indicative of its two most famous sons, William Penn and Benjamin Franklin. Meander through Washington Square, Chestnut Hill, Rittenhouse Square, Germantown, and even the infamous Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Customer Reviews:
all his opinion.......2003-05-23
I wanted a book that gave me lots of facts, not that gave the authors opinion on hippies and other irelevant things.
Disappointing.......2001-04-19
I found this book to be a diappointment. I expected a book which would discuss the architecture of the buildings of Philadelphia. Instead the book is about the history of the city and its buildings with scant discussion of the architure. A Better title for this book would be , The Historical Significance of The Buildings of Philadelphia. For a guide book their were surprisingly few (black and white) photographs. I would suggest , Philadelphia Architecture: A Guide To The City; by The Foundation For Architecture .
A great read!.......2000-07-12
How many guidebooks can you read through like a novel? I have several times, and each time is better than the last. This book is informative and entertaining. It's amazing how many new things you can learn about a city you thought you knew. And how can you not love a book where even the index is fun to read?

Customer Reviews:
Mars the Fifth.......2004-04-07
I just got back from a trip to Florida, and while there I bought books two through five and I've already read each three times (at least). But anyway, about the Fifth.... Book five reveals yet more parts of Rei's past to Kira and a lot of Rei's perspective on why Sei did what he did when Kira spends the night. Shiori's still there (blehh), trying to get Rei back by any means nessecary, which includes pleading and a great deal of crying; which seems to be going on a lot lately. More news!: Rei and Kira's relationship is really lacking anything past hugging and kissing (catch my drift?), and Rei may start to lose interest if things dont't heat up soon!
A common love story...? not quite..........2002-11-04
I had been wanting to get my hands on MARS #1 for sometime now and I wasn't disappointed when I finally had it in my hands and read it. It was simply beautiful! the art isn't as flourish as CLAMP's yet it has this certain simplicity that captivates you from the very start.
The story is about how two entirely different worlds clash, starcrossed lovers meet and create this balance in their surroundings. Kira is incredibly shy while Rei is incredibly outgoing. The very start of the saga and how, given the circumstances they meet and as different they are... they are perfect for each other. What I love most about this manga is how love is portrayed as something so beautiful and simple, not with those silly vows that in the end no one commits. True undying love. This manga is filled with tension, suspense, love, fear, jealousy, admiration... I assure you won't be disappointed and will be desperate for the next volume!
A must for any shoujo-manga collector's shelf.
A good addition to a manga collection.......2002-11-01
On a suggestion from a magazine article on graphic novels, I ordered the first few translated volumes of this manga for the high school library for which I work. We are in the process of building a small graphic novel collection and this series is just the kind of teenage romance that will go over well. All of the characters have their foibles and the main romance has all that angst that the girls seem to love. The art style is very pretty and detailed without being muddy. As with all of TokyoPop's translations, this is read from right to left and back to front like authentic manga but each volume has instructions for how to do this. It's harder than it might seem.

There are many words that could be used to describe Daniel Pinkwater's books. Wacky comes to mind. Outrageous. Lively. Real. Unreal. Comic genius Jules Feiffer, in his foreword to 5 Novels, says, "Pinkwater's thoughts don't connect like yours or mine. His 'tab A' does not fit into 'slot A' the way it's supposed to in a well-thought-out thought. More likely, his 'tab A' will fit into 'slot 14' or 'slot X79,' the kind of fit that might drive you or me crazy if we tried it, but when Pinkwater does it, you read it and say to yourself, 'Why, of course, this is how it should be.'"
Performing chickens, a New Jersey Martian, an orangutan orchestra conductor from Ceylon ... the details are what jump out of his novels. The ice cream dish in Slaves of Spiegel, for example, consisting of an eggplant, two slabs of whole-wheat pizza dough, 16 flavors of ice cream, fresh figs, pistachio nuts, a lobster, and assorted fresh garden vegetables and fruit. (It's served piping hot from the microwave, in a freshly laundered regulation army knapsack, to the accompaniment of Franz Liszt music.) This is what Pinkwater is all about. A junior-high schooler's dream of an author.
In 5 Novels, you can feast upon five beloved and quirky favorites: Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars, Slaves of Spiegel, The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death, The Last Guru, and Young Adult Novel. And if you still need more Pinkwater novels (and you definitely do), explore 4 Fantastic Novels. (Ages 9 and much, much older.) --Emilie Coulter

A smart writer for smart children .......2007-04-09
If you haven't read Pinkwater before, this is a good place to start. If you are familiar with his work then rejoice for here are five books in one. And not just any five books... oh no. This collection contains not only Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars and Young Adult Novel but the first and best of the Snarkout Boy books. Buy it, read it, and know that you and your children will never be the same.
Boared with your hum drum life? Escape with the Cosmic Beatnicks of Pinkwater!.......2006-11-10
I Loved these books. Daniel pinkwater is an old favorite from my adolescance. I fondly remember my older brother reading aloud from the "Snarkout Boys..." and "Young Adult Novel" on family car trips. More than holding up well with time, I found that now, at 32, I can finally grasp the great comic surrealism that is Daniel Pinkwater. This is a great compilation of old favorites and un-appreciated gems. This book is somehow bound with paper so light, I carried it on the subway daily until I finnished all 5 books and wasn't bothered by the size or weight. I highly reccomend this book to anyone who can appreciate inter-dimensional shopping mall parking lots, gourmets from space, enlightenment brought on by silly hats, socio-political revenge via soggy grape nuts and/or Psycho-kinetic guacamole. Yum...
the last Guru rocks!.......2005-11-20
This is an amazing, funny, incredibly random book with five comical masterpeices. Though I agree with the other reveiwers that alan medelsohn, boy from Mars is very good, my personel favorite is the last Guru. the idea of a self-made kid millionare is VERY intertaning. These books are, as I said earlier, random, and A Young Adult Novel is possibly the most random of them all. an example; the Dada's(the main character) beleive dishwashers should rule the world. Weird, isn't it? Any way, no matter wich story you read first, you'll laugh and have a great time reading it.
A great read. Again, again, again, and again........2005-07-09
The five novels in this book are genius. Alan Mendelson, boy from mars, takes youn through a boy going through being the new kid, goofing off with another weirdo, the wacky Klugarsh Mind Control, and... well I just can't give away the rest! I have to say i have a soft spot for The Last Guru, its so just... cool what happens to the boy :). This is an EXELLENT book for anyone to buy, I've read it so many times i tore off both covers and three pages. A great book to love and read again, again, again, and again.
-[beyond a title]-.......2004-12-01
I cannot think of one word, or two, or three or even more to describe this book. I am not even going to try. The only problem I have is not with the book itself, but with some of the reviews.. Everyone looks upon Alan Mendelson, Boy from Mars as Pinkwater's masterpiece when the true gem (in my opinion) is in the back of the book! Yes folks.. Young Adult Novel by Daniel Pinkwater is quite possibly my favourite book. Ever. It is insanely random (Horace Gerstenblut n'existe pas!!!) (also, Kevin Shapiro is the, well, I won't ruin that card for you, partially 'cause I can't remember..). But anyway, all the contained novels are pure comic genius, funny to all (I loved them when I was eleven or so, but they seem almost better to people in high school; my aunt loves Pinkwater and I read Young Adult Novel to my mum and she seemed to enjoy it), so I suggest you read this book IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

Chilling SPACE adventure!.......2005-12-29
HI. I'm not the biggest fan of sci-fi, but this series is cool and innovative. It's realistic and has interesting plots! Anyone looking for adventure and novels with technical and scientific twists to it...READ THIS SERIES!! This book, # 5, is tied with the tenth for my favorite. A sudden seizing of a space station on planet Mars by galactic terrorists leaves young Tyce Sanders fighting for his life and the lives of other hostages--including some very important to him. The ending is surprising. (Brouwer is real good!) Better, it brings out Christian values and real important lessons! This series is not the absolute best, but it is definitely underrated. Just TRY IT!

Far from excellent, but not useless.......2006-09-16
I read this book translated to the portuguese, here in Brazil.I'm an agronomist and I like to read books.
This book is concise, short, full of photos(all Black And White) and very easy to read.
The failures of this book are small. The biggest failure of this book is, to be very short. This book hasn't enough informations, about this subject.Even as an introduction to this subject, this book hasn't enough informations.
