Sue Halpern, a gifted student of the natural world, has a knowing passion for butterflies--"not love, exactly, offered suddenly, but a similar quickening of heart and desire ... tugging on my imagination as if it were a loose sleeve."
In Four Wings and a Prayer, that passion takes flight in quest of the monarch, a species of butterfly suddenly much in the news. In the company of freelance biologist Bill Calvert, ecologist Homero Aridjis, and other scientists and activists, Halpern travels into the highlands of Michoacan, Mexico, to which monarchs born east of the Rocky Mountains migrate each autumn, flying as much as 200 miles a day to get there before the onset of the highland winter. There she ponders the complexities of the monarch's life--after all, she writes, "how did the monarch butterflies from the eastern United States and Canada, millions of them, end up every year in the same unlikely spot, a remote and largely inhospitable fifty acres of oyamelis pine forest?"--and the unfortunate events that have felled monarchs by the untold millions in recent years, including the destruction of habitat and climate change.
Halpern's enthusiasm for Lepidoptera is catching, and her graceful advocacy of the monarch should inspire renewed concern for their well-being in the world. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Every autumn, the monarch butterflies east of the Rockies migrate from as far north as Canada to Mexico. Memory is not their guide — no one butterfly makes the round trip — but each year somehow find their way to the same fifty acres of forest on the high slopes of Mexico’s Neovolcanic Mountains, and then make the return trip in the spring.
In
Four Wings and a Prayer, Sue Halpern sets off on an adventure to delve into the secrets behind this extraordinary phenomenon. She visits scientists and butterfly lovers across the country, offering a keenly observed portrait of the monarchs’ migration and of the people for whom they have become a glorious obsession. Combining science, memoir, and travel writing,
Four Wings and a Prayer is an absorbing travelogue and a fascinating meditation on a profound mystery of the natural world.

Caught in the Mystery of Why Anyone Should Care.......2007-09-03
I had read this book for school, and by the first page I knew it was going to be a painful experience. The first fifty pages weren't so bad, after that, everything went downhill. I was never less interested in butterflies in my life. At first, the topic of the story was clear- going to a convention in Mexico about saving the monarchs. After that, nothing made sense- the storyline no longer had any real point. The author jumped around from date to date in no particular order. At one point, I wasn't sure if continuing the book would get me any further than I was before I strarted. Unless you have an extreme love of monarch butterflies and being extremely bored and confused, do not buy this book.
The Gifts of the Monarch Butterfly.......2007-03-22
This wonderful little book has opened my eyes to so much more than I ever expected. I have just returned from Mexico and the Monarchs. Sue Halpern's book was like my road map into this magical, mystical and transformational experience
Caught up in the Mystery; Review from an Oklahoma State University Student.......2005-11-15
I liked this book because of the facts it includes and the connections it makes between science and human feelings. Over the ages many people have been amazed by the monarch butterfly's migration every year; however very few are interested enough to understand their complexity. Sue Halpern is one of the few who is interested enough to attempt to solve the mystery. In her book Four Wings and a Prayer: Caught in the Mystery of the Monarch Butterfly she reports her findings, in a fast-paced interesting research narrative. Halpern gives the reader a plethora of information while telling her story of how she became fascinated with the Monarch Butterfly. Even though she was not a biologist, the story she told of her adventures was chronologically organized and seemed like a field journal that a biologist would have written. Her field journal (the book), was filled with scientific facts, interviews, personal experiences, and the special feature of maps to trace the monarch migration. In addition to facts, she pours out her feelings about the issue of conserving the monarchs and the importance of their survival. Connecting human feelings to science is one of the strong points of Mrs. Halpern's writing. This is one of the strongest points of the book. Another related point that Halpern makes is that passion and science lay hand in hand. Halpern reminisces, "As a child I collected rocks. . . I did remember the single mindedness through which I picked through the woods behind my house, and the pure joy of finding something . . . It seemed reasonable to call this passion, and to think of myself - and everyone else - as a collection of passions" (9). This is one of many of the comparisons Halpern makes between passion and science. Passion plays an important role in the world of science because it drives scientists to continue looking, just like Halpern continued to look for her rocks. This book is strong in communicating the connection between science and human feelings. I hope this review was helpful to you in choosing a book.
Promises but doesn't deliver . . . pass this one up!.......2004-09-18
I read a brief review of this book in the NYT Book Review and it sounded exciting and enlightening . . . alas, it's quite dull and offers surprisingly little information whether or not you're a butterfly fancier. To tell the truth, I read the second half of the book just to find out what in the world she could possibly fill all those pages with! There are a few neat facts about monarchs, and intriguing portraits of a few eccentric lepidopterists, but the rest is statements like "we really don't know [fill in blank] about these butterflies" and vague, unsatifying rhapsodizing by the author about her seemingly inexplicable passion for winged creatures--not to mention rather unremarkable mutterings about the nature of passion itself. This type of nonfiction can really sing--"The Orchid Thief," for example, though it definitely has its flaws, is nevertheless a fascinating read. Diane Ackerman's "Natural History of the Senses" is totally engaging as well. Or on a slightly different note, Judith Hooper's "Of Moths and Men" is a riveting portrayal of the controversy and scientific backbiting surrounding the peppered moth and Darwin's theory of natural selection. Contemporary nonfiction has come a long way, but "Four Wings" just falls flat.
Boring for non-devotees.......2002-02-09
I suppose if you are extremely interested in monarch butterflies you will find this book fascinating. I must admit I read only 100 pages. I enjoyed the beginning, when Halpern traveled to Mexico, but after page 100 the book was too academic, filled with the points of view of various monarch afficionados. Pretty dull stuff. I didn't think the writing was all that great, either. I suppose it was an academic success, but it didn't draw me in to the adventure.

Customer Reviews:
Good value.......2005-09-19
This booklet is a concise summary of important places to visit. It is not intended as a detailed book, but rather as the actual information you'll be holding in your pocket while doing your sightseeing. For planning ahead in detail, I recommend go to the internet.
Great map included with very detailed information
Helpful and concise.......2001-03-02
This is a very helpful guide that we found organized and well-indexed. You won't go wrong with this if you're visiting Amsterdam.
5-star map; 3-star book........1999-12-09
The map which comes with this book is nearly perfect - it has all the tram and bus lines except the ones changed since '98 (very little changes) and it is more accurate, more detailed, and includes more of the city than the maps available in the VVV (tourist information) in Amsterdam. I spent the summer in Amsterdam and this map was indispensable, especially since I was not living in the city center and my apartment was located off most maps.
The book, on the other hand, is great for listing ideas of things to see and do, but does not actually 'review' anything - the author basically seems to think _everything_ in Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful and worth seeing. This is a terrific attitude if you are there for a long time, but if you are planning a short visit, try to read one of the more critical books as well so you won't waste your time and miss the best things. Also, the book has not been updated recently, so several of the restaurants (vegetarian ones mostly) are no longer open (but, to be fair, I could not find _any_ guidebooks for Amsterdam in which all the vegetarian restaurants were still in business, including a pamphlet published only a few months before, since several had just gone under.)
Very Good Map.......1998-10-01
The map is excellent, very detailed, down to every street. And it's easy to read. The guide is brief, but helpful. Gives most of the essential information, all the museums and major attractions. We decided to order a second copy, in case our party wants to split up!

Fodor's does it again!.......2001-08-30
This mini guide was an EXCELLENT companion on our recent Rome excursion. The top 25 sites section was particularly useful in determining what to see during our stay. Each of the 25 sites noted in the guide included a train/bus number reference and that was most helpful. Many travel guides do not include such info. You'll never miss with the Citypacks!
I have read this book!.......2000-06-17
Without fanfare, this book has been more than helpful. From spendthrift to affluence ...it lets me call the shots. Insightful reviews guide my trip of a lifetime ...and I need help. The logistical insights of important connection to the ancient while nurturing tourism avoidance within all possible bounds has been accomplished.

Book Description
"With a sharp eye for nuances of culture and the political situation in
the Middle East, Clinton has created a rich, colorful cast of characters and an emotionally charged novel." — SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL (starred review)
I am Malaak Abed Atieh, and this bird is Abdo. . . . I live in Abdo's eyes. . . . I fly high, high above Gaza City. . . . Nothing stops me, not the concrete and razor wire, not the guns, not the soldiers. I stare at them with my hard black Abdo eyes, and they do not shoot me. I am hidden.
The year is 1988 in Gaza City, and it has been a month since eleven-year-old Malaak's beloved father left to look for work in Israel, only to disappear. Every day Malaak climbs up to the roof and waits for him, imagining that she can fly to the prison cell where she is sure he waits, too. She speaks little to anyone, preferring to commune with the loyal little bird she has tamed. But her twelve-year-old brother, Hamid, has a different way of coping. He feels only anger, stoked by militant extremists who preach violence as the only way to change their fate. Malaak's mother and sister beg the boy to stay away from harm, but now Malaak lives in fear that she may lose her only brother as well. What will it take for her to find her voice — and the strength to move beyond the violence that surrounds her?
Customer Reviews:
Well written and eye opening.......2007-01-04
For someone who has little understanding of cultural tension, this book is extremely well-written and helps reader empathize with situations in the middle east.
Major disapointment.......2004-11-19
This "novel" is thinly veiled propaganda, pure and simple. It is a shame that this type of "literature" is aimed at such a young and impressionable audience. This book was part of my child's public school cirriculum, and while it does attempt to illustrate that violence is no solution to the Middle East conflict, it is quite obvious where the author's sensitivities lie. This was a major disappointment, I would not feel comfortable recommending this book to others.
If you like to read moving stories, read this book........2004-07-29
Eleven year-old Malaak Abed Atieh lives with her mother, her older sister Hend and her older brother Hamid in Gaza City. It's been a month since their father left to look for work as a mechanic in Israel, only to disappear. Every day she climbs up to the roof and waits for him, imagining that she can fly to the prison cell where she is convinced he's being held. She hardly speaks to anybody except her pet bird Abdo.
As tensions mount between the Israelis and Palestinians, Malaak realizes she can't remain in her world of silence anymore. Each day becomes a struggle for her when her mother tells her that her father is dead. It gets even harder when Hamid tells her that he and his friend, Tariq, have become involved in a hate group. When the rest of the family finds out, they know he's in danger and try to get him out of the hate group with no success. Their worst fears are realized when Hamid gets shot in the head one day and has to go to the hospital. Will Hamid remain alive or will he die like his father?
This book made me feel sorry for all of the people who are experiencing war in their home countries. Nobody should have to go through that kind of turmoil in their lives. If I were Hamid, I would not have joined the hate group because violence does not solve problems. What would you have done if you were Hamid? If you like to read moving stories, read this book to find out what happens to Malaak and her family.

The scars of war.......2004-05-16
Eleven-year-old Malaak has stopped talking to her family and friends since her father disappeared a month before. The roof of her building in the Palestinian community of Gaza City provides her only refuge. It is here that she speaks to her pet dove Abdo, a gift from her father. In this place, she says, "I soar out of the Gaza Strip. Nothing stops me, not the concrete and razor wire, not the guns, not the soldiers." It is the first intifada of 1988 and Malaak experiences the mounting conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
When Malaak learns that her father was killed on a bus by a terrorist's bomb, she retreats to an inner world where she sees her father in dreams. All around her the violence increases as the youth on the streets or the "shabab" take on the Israeli soldiers with stones for weapons. Malaak's mother and her sister Hend, decry the violence of the Islamic Jihad. However, her 12-year-old brother Hamid is drawn in by its angry self-righteousness. Malaak loves her brother, her protector and a poet, but is scared to see him move increasingly under the influence of others in the jihad, who embrace violence as a solution to the occupation of the Gaza Strip.
The power of A Stone in My Hand is its insightful portrayal of the scars left on those children living in a zone of armed conflict and unending violence. From the silencing of Malaak by grief, to the rash and dangerous decisions of Hamid, we see children living in a world out of their control, coping in ways that are more instinctual than rational. The damage made by the ravages of armed violence is evident. However, for Malaak, the love of her family and the memory of her father is the balm to soothe the wounds.
