5 out of 5 stars An inclusive reference, very well done.......1998-02-25

This is a quite inclusive book of Chesapeake Bay fish. Many Atlantic species that stray into the mouth of the Bay are also included. Excellent scientific drawings, many color plates, good concise text. It is geared towards reference (not a Sunday read). Very well done.

    Book Description

"We have wasted our inheritance by improvidence and mismanagement."--William K. Brooks, on the Chesapeake Bay's declining oyster harvests, 1905

The Chesapeake Bay oyster has changed little, if at all, in the century since this popular book was published. But the oyster harvest has fallen to its lowest level on record--from 15 million bushels at the turn of the century to fewer than 100,000 bushels in 1993. What was once the most bountiful source of oysters in the world has become nearly exhausted. More than a century ago, explains Kennedy T. Paynter Jr. in the introduction to the present volume, scientist and Maryland state official William K. Brooks warned that this day would come.

A classical morphologist by training, and one of the Johns Hopkins University's first and most distinguished faculty members, Brooks had "tonged oysters in five different states" when the governor of Maryland appointed him Oyster Commissioner in 1882. The Oyster, first published in 1891, is a popular scientific account of what he knew and what he learned on the job. After describing the basic biology of the oyster, Brooks discusses its tremendous reproductive capacity, what it eats, how it lives, why it thrives in the Bay, and what role it plays in the Bay's ecology.

But The Oyster is more than a simple biology text. It is also a critical scientific review of oyster management in the Chesapeake Bay, commenting on and criticizing contemporary laws and regulatory practices--many of which are still in place today. The book is therefore as timely now as it was when first published. A new introduction from Kennedy T. Paynter Jr. brings the story into modern focus and again charges the reader with the responsibility of caring for the life of the Bay.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The oyster - as true today as it was 100 years ago.......1999-03-15

This reprinting of a book first printed over a hundred years ago is an enjoyable, if somewhat depressing review of the managment and mismanagement of the oyster resources of the Chesapeake Bay. The first half is a review of the biology, and the second goes into all of the politics and problems of trying to manage an open fishery. Much of what is said rings true today.

When the Buddha was dying, he instructed his followers to cremate his body and enclose his remains inside four separate monuments or "stupa-mounds." These manmade "axial mountains" became the prototype for the monuments that are so beautifully presented in Joe Cummings's Buddhist Stupas in Asia. Each spread features full-color illustrations or photographs, depicting the varying shapes, designs, and scale of this holy architecture. "People in all the different cultures that have discovered Buddhism seem to have gone crazy with joy, building stupas by the millions," writes Cummings, whose other Lonely Planet titles cover Thailand and Bangkok. "[They are] more than funeral reliquaries. They are memorials, rather, to the immanent possibility of freedom from suffering for all beings." Ten pages of transparent architectural overlays explain how the sacred meets function. Book Description

Transcending architecture and archaeology, the stupa is the living embodiment of Buddhist teachings - a harmonising of the physical with the spiritual. It remains one of the oldest and most persistent religious symbols still in everyday use. This beautifully illustrated, full-colour hardback explores the spread of stupa building across India and Asia, encapsulating the lasting appeal and allure of stupas to travellers, scholars and those interested in architecture and religion. Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfection is a lavish exploration of this religious and architectural icon of Asia and India.

Buddhist Stupas in Asia: The Shape of Perfection by Bill Wassman (Photographer), et al, offers a sweeping and broad overview of the epitome of Asian Buddhist architecture. The photographs are good and the succinct commentary is informative enough. This is not a book for hardcore history buffs though, as the very short accompanying analysis would not suffice; nevertheless, in most cases the photographs more than compensate by offering quality glimpses of a divine form of architecture. One drawback: some of the photographs are too small for the subject to be really appreciated (some are as small as approx. 3cm x 3cm!). All in all: an enjoyable mind-trip through the very essence of Buddhist architecture.

This book covers Buddhist architecture across its known history, from its origins in Northern India through Southeast Asia to Indonesia, to Nepal and Tibet, into China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The emphasis is clearly on architecture, but it covers the relevant backgrounds in Buddhist art and philosophy as well. If you want a book about Buddhist cultures or thought, this is not it. But if you want a book about Buddhist architecture, this is a great beginning. It is well-written, well-designed, and the photography is excellent. I wish it were much longer and went into much greater depth... but then it would be much more expensive!

I received this book as a surprise gift, and I think it makes a great gift: it's the kind of thing someone would want and enjoy, but would not buy for themselves.

The author, Joe Cummings, also writes the Lonely Planet guidebooks for Laos, Thailand and Myanmar (Burma), and they are excellent. I've been to all three places, and so I've seen many of the stupas covered in this book, and his guides have helped me more than most do.

5 out of 5 stars a must for Asian art lovers.......2001-10-18

When I opened this book in the bookstore, I was knocked out by the photos, which cover stupas all the way from Taxila, Pakistan, to Tokyo, Japan. The stupa photography is particularly strong in the chapters on India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Tibet. An entire chapter is devoted to Borobudur and satellite stupas in central Java.

Dipping into the text at home, I was pleasantly surprised by how authoritative and complete the coverage of this complex topic was. Not only does the author do an excellent job of explaining the symbolism of stupas in various Buddhist cultures, he also links it to the history of Buddhism throughout Asia, no small task. Although I'm a longtime amateur student of Buddhism and Asian art history myself, I found much new material to ponder.

I was most impressed by the way Mr Cummings has carried out original research as well as reporting on the research of other scholars who came before him. This is something I didn't expect from a hardcover pictorial such as this. Kudos to Lonely Planet for publishing a seriously good book.

In this stunning first novel, Graham Gardner pays homage to Robert Cormier's great The Chocolate War with a story about a boy trying to survive in a school run by a vicious secret society. But where Jerry Renault resists the system, only to succumb to it in the end, Elliot Sutton is more eager to do its bidding, and doesn't take action to resist until it is almost too late. At first Elliot had hoped that it would be different at Holminster High. He carries the fear always--the fear of the beatings and much worse that made his life hell at his old school. But at Holminster High, Elliot can be the kind of person who avoids trouble by fitting in. He watches himself carefully every moment and shapes himself to be noticed just enough in the right way. Ironically, his strategy backfires when the Guardians (the secret three who control and terrorize Holminster High) select him as a candidate to be trained for their group.

After school, Elliot finds a friend in outcast Ben, but both boys know they can never acknowledge each other in the halls. When Elliot falls in love with bright, outspoken Louise, he feels he must wear yet another identity for her. Elliot sinks into numb isolation behind his masks when a crucial decision pushes him to take back his self with an act that could cost him dearly. Inventing Elliot is a heartrending, engrossing novel to be pondered and discussed. (Ages 12 and older) <--Patty Campbell>

                                    Book Description

When fourteen-year-old Elliot Sutton arrives at Holminster High, he's determined not to stand out. He simply can't let himself become a target again—not like he was at his last school. This time, he's a new Elliot. Tough. Impenetrable. But then he meets the Guardians, a group of upperclassmen that secretly rule Holminster with a quiet and anonymous terror. Obsessed with George Orwell's book 1984, they desire power for the sake of power—and they always get what they want. Now, they want Elliot. Not to terrorize . . . but to join them. Can Elliot face his new future, or will he become his own worst nightmare?

Inventing Elliot by Graham Gardner is a riveting book, although
obvious at times. Elliot Sutton is a 14 year-old boy who's family
has just moved to a new town where he starts in a new school
called Holminster High. Here he meets the Guardians, a group of
students that rule the school; Ben, an intelligent boy that isn't
excepted by other people; and Louise, a nice girl that Elliot falls
in love with. This story is told in Elliot's perspective and can go slow at times, but still keeps you wondering what will happen next.
I thought this book was an emotional book that truly shows how cruel life can be sometimes. Through most of the book, I didn't like Elliot because of some of the choices he made and the way he was always so moody. Graham Gardner has many jobs such as a writer, an academic researcher, and a musician. Inventing Elliot is his first novel and was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award. After reading this book i feel he really understands how Elliot would feel and does a wonderful job of showing it in the book.
I would only recommend this young adult book to sixth graders
and up because it is graphic and violent.

                                    Inventing Elliot
                                    By Graham Gardner

The book I am reading is Inventing Elliot it takes place at Holminster High in Holminster during 1984. And the author is Graham Gardner.

Elliot was the main character he was a boy that really didn't know what he was as a person. And every one else controls him. Then there was Richard that thought he could control the school with two other friends that were all ways doing something crazy.

The main problem was when Elliot gets involved with the gardens and they turn him into a bad person. There is some people who afraid of him and basically they make all of his moves. They keep getting him into other things to do that he is not sure about.

My favorite part of the book was when Elliot went to his new house and there was a community pool. Then when he went in to the pool in the morning he noticed a kid that swimming that recognize was so afraid of him that he ran away with out talking to Elliot because of what happen to him when the guardians where near him.

If you like books that could really happen in real life and takes a long time until some thing really happens you will probable like this book Inventing Elliot. But if you need a book that keeps you a wake and is really existing this book wouldn't be for you.

                                    3 out of 5 stars Thomas's Book Review.......2006-11-22

Inventing Elliot is about a kid who wants to start a new life at a new school. This book is by Graham Gardner. The setting of this book is a school called Holminster High in the present time.
The main character's name is Elliot Sutton. Other characters in this book are his mom, his dad, and everybody in Holminster High. At Elliot's old school, he was beat up and tortured. Elliot moved. In Holminster High, he tries to blend in perfectly with everyone. But then he hears a humor. A bad rumor. People in Holminster say that there is a group of people named The Guardians. They then call to speak to him. But when they talk to him, they ask to join him. Will Elliot join the Guardians?
The main problem in the story is that the Guardians want Elliot to join them. The Guardians "rule the school." They pick people to get punished and the punishers. Elliot thought they would be a bunch of punks but they end up being upper-class men. Elliot doesn't want to join them. Will he join them?
My favorite part in this story I would love to tell you but it gives away too much of the story. I can tell you why I like it though. I liked this par tin the story because it's a surprising twist and very interesting.
I really loved this book. I rate this book three stars and I would only recommend this book to sixth graders and up. It is very graphic and violent.

                                    Inventing Elliot by: Graham Gardener

Inventing Elliot is about a boy named Elliot (of course). He's 14 years old and goes to a horrible school. He is bullied and beat up every day.
It's surviving in his prospective. He has a mother and a stepfather. His other father was killed by some kind of muggers. His mother is caring and wishes for a better life and hopes she wont loose her husband again. While his stepfather is a slob and watches the TV all the time.

Through all the torment and misery at school he decides to transfer to a new school called "Holminster high". He meets countless friends and types of bullies that don't hurt kids without meaning or so it seams. He tries to invent a new Elliot (an Elliot that wont be bullied, beat up, and will have some cool friends).

I liked this book and would recommend it. It's a fast read yet very strong. My favorite part of the book was when Elliot met a girl and became really good friends. If I could rate this book on 1-5 I would give it a 3½. That is my review of Inventing Elliot.
