4 out of 5 stars Good Resource - Lots of photos!.......2000-04-13

Encourage your children to recycle and care for the environment with this book. It contains 50 ideas using items from nature (stones, sticks, plants, etc.) and recycled materials (cans, paper bags, newspapers, etc.) A few of their eco-friendly ideas include: license plate bird feeder, handprint giftwrap, a wooden house for bats, birch bark canoe, potato print shirts, mosaic flowerpots, sketch and press nature journals, paper bag books, cut and paste bottles and jars, corn husk sunflowers, papier mache pinata and hats, Eco party ideas, bottle gardens, natural cosmetics, and more.

Craft ideas range from easy to more challenging and are appropriate for a variety of age ranges, though elementary and middle school aged students would enjoy them the most. The book is filled with several photographs for each activity making it a hit with visual learners!

In addition to great craft ideas, the book highlights several environmental organizations -- many started by kids -- that are making a difference. This book just might inspire your child or teenager to get involved!

            Book Description

When Billy moved to St. Paul Island with his parents and younger sister, they lived at the southwest light station in almost total isolation. His family quickly learned to cope in a world without neighbours, electricity, schools, or mainland comforts. In 'Memoirs of a Lightkeeper's Son', Billy tells his story of survival on that lonely rock. Sense the lush green of the island in summer in the midst of a crystal blue sea and feel the harshness of winter while buried under snow and surrounded by drift ice. Share with Billy the excitement of unexpected guests, the arrival of a supply ship as well as the sadness of sickness, tragedy and loss.

            Book Description

Ida Zoradia Lewis (1842-1911) was seeking neither fame nor fortune when she grabbed the oars and took to the choppy waters off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island.  Her goal was to rescue two drowning soldiers.  Though her father, Captain Hosea Lewis, was the lighthouse keeper of record, he had become too infirm to conduct his daily duties let alone perform a dangerous rescue in a snowstorm.  With the help of her little brother this 103-pound young woman succeeded in saving the men.  Ida had made her first rescue at the age of fifteen, but it wasn't until this save--her fifth daring rescue--that the world discovered the remarkable Ida Lewis.  When published reports and newspapers ran stories of the rescue, her life changed.  That summer alone, 9,000 visitors came to meet the heroine, including President Ulysses S. Grant, Susan B. Anthony and other luminaries.

Lenore Skomal has meticulously researched and uncovered original source material, and recounts the stories of other courageous women who tended the precious Fresnel lens and saved countless lives through their steadfast work, but most of all, this is the story of a simple woman who became a hero for just doing her job.

5 out of 5 stars New York Public Library Award winning biography.......2003-07-22

"Keeper of Lime Rock" was recently honored by the New York Public Library as a new listing in its 2003 Books for the Teenage. It is listed as one of only seven new listings under the category of "Remarkable People." Although not originally written for a teen audience, it has clearly found appeal among that market and I couldn't be more thrilled.

5 out of 5 stars The Keeper of Lime Rock.......2003-02-25

I have to say that more in depth information would have been good. The only reason I say this is because I am the great, great, great grand-daughter of Ida Lewis and I have Just recently found this out, I think more about the family and life of Ida Like when she use to pull the plank so that my grandmother could not get to the light house, because Ida wanted to be alone. We have the certificates that were presented to my grandmother from the president of the united states, after her death. So much was missed for a bioagraphy.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a joke.......2002-09-12

I would prefer not to give this any star at all.I can't imagine how any self-respecting publishing company accepted this book and then released it without ever having an editor work on it. Ms. Skomal needed an editor in the worst way. The book was so full of awkward sentences, childish constructions and misused words that sometimes I laughed out loud. Perhaps the problem arises from the fact that the book is mercilessly padded. There's good magazine article here and nothing more.

5 out of 5 stars Woman and the Sea.......2002-09-11

This lovely book, a story of a brave woman and the sea, is so well-written. It is obvious that it was a labor of love for its author. In less than 150 pages, Lenore Skomal manages to convey the spirit of Ida lewis and the times in which she lived. Despite the scarcity of primary sources such as journals, personal letters, or any other correspondence, the book is well- documented by the author. She has painstakingly put together this book, complete with some wonderful vintage photos.

Ida Lewis was born in Newport, Rhode Island in 1842. Her father, Captain Hosea Lewis, was a coastal pilot who in 1853 became the first keeper of Lime Rock Lighthouse on a tiny island in Newport Harbor. After years of back-and-forth travel, a house was finally built on Lime Rock for Lewis and his family, but they had lived in the house for just a few months when a stroke disabled him.

Ida, 16, already having assumed a heavy burden of household duties, now began to take care of the light--she filled the lamp with oil at sundown and again at midnight, trimmed the wick, polished the carbon off the reflectors, and put out the light at dawn.

Ida and her mother tended the Lime Rock Light from 1857 until 1872, when her father died. Her mother was appointed lighthouse keeper and remained in this position until she died in 1879, even though Ida continued to do the work.

In 1879, Ida was officially appointed to the keeper's job with a salary of $750 a year and she remained in this job until her death.

During her 39 years on Lime Rock, Ida saved 18 lives, although some reports say this number may have been 25. In 1858 Ida performed the first of her many rescues and saved the lives of four young men whose boat had capsized.

Ida's fame spread quickly after a daring 1869 rescue in a snowstorm, and articles appeared in the New York Tribune, Harper's Weekly, Leslie's magazine, and other major newspapers. On Independence Day in 1869, Ida was honored by the town, but this shy. retiring woman was distressed by all the attention.

She was briefly married to Captain William Wilson in 1870, but they separated after two years.

Although never awarded the Carnegie Medal, as was rumored, Andrew Carnegie did give her a pension in her later years.

On the night she died in 1911, the bells on all the ships anchored in Newport Harbor tolled in her memory and flags were flown at half-staff throughout Newport.

In 1924 the Rhode Island legislature officially changed the name of Lime Rock to Ida Lewis Rock with the lighthouse named after her --the only such honor ever paid to a keeper. In 1995, a new class of Coast Guard buoy tenders was named for Ida Lewis.

The buildings at Lime Rock were sold in 1928 for $7,200 and became the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. The Yacht Club remains in operation today, with many additions surrounding the original buildings. A causeway now connects the rock to the mainland.

A well-done effort about an interesting but little-known part of our coastal history.

              Book Description

Readers can once again enjoy Helene Glidden's classic, "The Light on the Island" as this 50th Anniversary Edition retells the touching story of a young girl growing up on Patos Island in the San Juan Archipelago. Her parents raised thirteen children while her father served as the Patos Island lighthouse keeper from 1905 - 1913. Helene reminisces about the adventure and heartbreak experienced on a beautiful but remote island where smugglers, old timers, and "God" weave in and out of their lives.

The book was originally published in 1951. This 50th Anniversary Edition has added historical photos and a postscript with biographical information about Mrs. Glidden and her family.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delightful peice of history.......2003-12-28

Patos Island is a tiny, magical, mystical undeveloped island that only a few fortunate sailors visit. I fell in love with it on my first visit, and only later did I learn of Helene Glidden's book. What a treasure! It brings her family alive in vivid detail--the hilarious, the heartbreaks and the nearly unimaginable hardships. After reading "The Light on the Island" I could not sail in that area without the benevolent company of their ghosts--I could almost hear them singing across the water, as if rowing on their way to a party on a neighboring island. Anyone who loves the San Juan Islands, anyone with a thirst for history will love this little book.

5 out of 5 stars Helene was my great aunt.......2003-12-26

The Light On The Island was written by my great aunt, Helene Glidden. We have enjoyed reading the story over and over, and have spent two nights in Active Cove on Patos Island with our children. The last night we spent there was about 5 years ago, tied up to a bouy in our 29 foot sailboat. It was a terrible night, as Active Cove often lives up to it's name. I spent all night thinking about my aunt and what it must have been like to call that lighthouse home.
...a lovely book. I hope you read it and enjoy it as much as we have.

              5 out of 5 stars Enchanted Islands.......2002-11-13

Helen Glidden wrote this gem for the amusement of her children. Lucky for us, she was persuaded to have it published. Now, happily, 50 years hence it's back in print. It's an enchanting story (mostly true) about a large family (13 children) of light house keepers posted to tiny Patos Island in the San Juan Islands of NW Washington State at the turn of the century. It is told through the eyes of the five-year-old, middle daughter and comes complete with smugglers, heroes, a murder or two, colorful characters, whimsy and plenty of humor. Glidden masters the tricky business of writing from the point of view of a youngster growing from five to 13 who, for example, thinks the bushy bearded man living on the lam in their forest and know only to her is God. The author was this girl.

              5 out of 5 stars Fun Reading.......2002-07-25

This book if fun to read, Good writing, Makes you laugh and cry. You will have a great time with this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Light On The Island Returns.......2001-12-30

In 1953 as a 10 year old living in upstate New York, I read The Light On The Island and was mesmerized by the adventures of Angie and her family on Patos Island. Living on an island with a lighthouse, surrounded by marine animals and birds, rowing about in boats, exploring the beaches, coves and woods of Patos was a dreamworld away from mine. The book remained one of my favorite childhood books,[ I still have the book---its dustcover in tatters] so imagine how I felt when 16 years later I met my husband, who was from the Seattle area and we eventually moved there and Angie's world was in my backyard. Four years ago we took our sailboat up to Patos and we walked the beaches, "the petticoats" of Patos Island. For young and old alike, The Light On The Island explores the world of a child, the dreams, the harsh reality, the innocence, life and death, and growing up. Read it for the first time, read it again, ---it will light up your day!

5 out of 5 stars The Island Keeper.......2006-02-24

Out of the hundreds of books I have read through out my life, this book remains one of the most endearing to me. Maybe it is the way Cleo triumphs over her life troubles and struggles that I like. Or maybe it was something that I would have liked to do as a girl-escape and make my own pathway toward learning about myself. We are reading this book in our book review group in March 06 and I am so excited to share this with my adult friends who maybe by reading it will have gained an appreciation for this young 16 year old hero.

5 out of 5 stars Fond Memories of this book........2005-05-26

Reading through the other reviews I notice that most are from women and how much this book impacted our young lives. I read this book over and over again (along with Cold River another survival tale). I think it was the strength in this character and her knack at learning survival skills that always pulled me in to reread it. I would still sit and read this book in fact I think I might have to splurge for a used copy.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing that my own story is so similar to anothers. .......2004-08-28

While I was in middle school I checked the book out numerous times. I loved the book. I loved Cleo, I loved her story and her strength. I even knew the exact location of that book and what the hardcover picture looked like. Move on in time to high school and college and every so often I would scour for the book (the title of which I had forgotten but I knew the authors last name began with an 'M'.) So finally after finishing college I went back to my old town and asked to go into the junior high library. I found the book. On the same shelf, same location and with me being the last person to have checked it out.

              5 out of 5 stars i love this.......2004-07-07

out of all the books i have ever read, this is the one that has made an impact on me. after reading it in 8th grade, i look upon my experience with this book as if i was there with cleo, as if the story were a palpable distant memory of my own. i come back to the book often to relive Cleo's adventure.

5 out of 5 stars A book about finding yourself.......2000-08-25

Wonderful book that I discovered in junior high. Several years later I bought a copy and this novel has become one of a treasured few I read again every year. The central character (indeed, practically the only character for most of the book) grows so much during her experience that you remember her life changes long after you put down the book. As always, great fast-moving, realistic storytelling from Harry Mazer.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2006-04-29

I may be biased, because it's about my family, but it is a wonderful story. It is so interesting, because in this day and age when we can have anything we want at a touch of a button, my Great Uncle and my Grandfather had a unique life and though it had it's ups and downs, I believe it made them the wonderful, caring people they are today.

I hope you'll read it. Enjoy!
