5 out of 5 stars Driftwood Valley ý Worth Re-Reading.......2001-06-28

I have an autographeed copy the ©1946 edition of Driftwood Valley. I had the privilege of growing up in the same rural Pennsylvania town as Ms. Fletcher. When I was a teenager, I was employed by Ms. Fletcher to clean house for her one summer while she was away. She is a very nice woman with a remarkable background. She has set aside a nature conservatory in Northeast Pennsylvania which is open to the public. She has always been active in protecting the environment and wildlife. I re-read Driftwood Valley every couple of years and just love the adventure and challenges of this true-life story. What made it even more exiting for me is that the author was from my hometown.

5 out of 5 stars A Field Naturalist's Classic.......2001-02-17

I am pleased to see this book has recently been reissued. I have an old, but treasured paperback copy. The author is observant of, informative about, and acutely responsive to the environment she describes. Having experienced winters in that region I would say she is especially adept at rendering the harsh, but radiant winters.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2000-01-05

This book is an amazing journey into the frontiers of nature, exploration and science in the 1930's.

5 out of 5 stars Move Over Annie and Tell Henry David the News.......1999-12-19

Do not buy one copy of this book! When you finish you will press it on a friend, who in turn will press it on another. In a month it will be out of the county; in two out of the state. You will not see the book again and you will sorely miss it. So buy two copies: one for re-reading, one for evangelism.

Driftwood Valley is easily the best book written on an outdoor theme by a woman. Why it remains buried in obscurity is a wonder. The best contemporary writing in the genre connot match it. Pilgrim at Tinker Creek comes close; but to read the two books successively is to realize the limitations of Annie Dillard. Stanwell-Fletcher stands in better company with Thoreau. In her depictions of winter life in particular she approaches the master. One is reminded constantly of "The Pond in Winter", "Brute Neighbors", and "Winter Animals". There is some of the grandeur of Thoreau's contemporary, Francis Parkman, in her prose, too, when she lifts her eye to sweep the horizens of the immense British Columbian landscape.

Ultimately, this is a big, confident, heroic book. No trembler in the world's genetically reductionist sphere is Theodora Stanwell-Fletcher. She sees Heaven's glory shine, and revels in it. So will you when you read this most neglected of American masterpieces!

A last note: Ms Stanwell-Fletcher is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College. I learned this from the bookjacket of the original edition I picked up for a dime at a yard sale. Having spent a year at Mount Holyoke as an exchange student, I took special heed of this and called their library seeking information. Was she still alive, etc. But no one there had heard of her! Later, a friend in South Hadley went to the alumni office, learned that she is indeed still with us, and was able to forward a fan letter to which she received a gracious thank you. I would suggest that any Holyoke grad reading this get the book, read it, contact your alma mater, and demand that they honor this lady. Ms Stanwell-Fletcher deserves it!

4 out of 5 stars Insight into a great mind..........2006-03-01

Fun, fast read. Eno is a pioneer and true rennaisance man. Recommended for anyone acutely interested in the music and art worlds, particularly those places where they intersect.

        5 out of 5 stars Delightfully Intimate.......2006-02-25

This is a great read - Eno is very honest and open... Plus it is amazing how busy but also how laid back is at times. It's full of great insights.

5 out of 5 stars Like Good Food.......2005-08-11

This is a wonderful book. It reminds me of some of my favorite foods. . . I wouldn't mind snacking on them for a moment or two, having a normal meal of them-- or maybe even a large, feast-like meal-- what's my point? Eno's diary is easy to read, and fun, and is perfect for browsing for a moment or two, or for more involved reading sessions. If you are interested, there are "story-lines" that develop-- relationships, projects, points of view-- so there is a sense of coherence in spite of the brevity of some entries. An added dimension is the kind of people mentioned and described-- from David Bowie to the members of James. It is very interesting to hear people like these described and discussed in intimate detail.

After reading a few pages of this diary, you will feel famous, too!

        5 out of 5 stars think.......2004-10-28

my well-worn copy was purchased when the book came out. a fan of eno from his roxy music days, he lead the pack in being ahead of the pack when it came to ambient music, among other things. that's why they call it 'avant guarde' folks - the advance guard, going where it's dangerous, well ahead of the rest of the followers.

for those that only gave the book a one or two star review, put it down early, etc., in short, they just don't get it, and most likely never will. that's ok. you can lead a horse to water...

forget eno as musician, producer, artist, educator, etc. , first and foremost he is a thinker, a man of ideas. his article in "wired" a decade ago said, in short , "there is not enough africa in computers". what do culture and technology have in common? what do art and life - heck, forget about life - what do art and death have in common? read the book. find out.

my copy is dog-earred, with a good number passeges underlined. why does one do that? because it reinfornces ideas one already posseses, often by putting them in a new light. and if you already have a penchant for thinking, eno may help sharpen some of those fuzzy thoughts. or even make them fuzzier, if warranted.

'oblique strategies' was a thought process eno developed with a collaborator to find new, creative ways of dealing with the issues that arise in any creative endeavor. 'oblique' and 'strategy' say much about eno's analytical mind, but if one listens to his contributions and colaborations with jon hassell or talking heads, you'llknw he brings more to the table than analysis.

here are some of his thoughts: "culture is not different from this: it is an ivitation to you to engage with a different world, a world of your and someone else's imagination. without your active engagement in that invitation, nothing happens. you are never actually a passive consumer of culture, because the only sense in which the verb 'to consume' has any meaning inthis context is when it means 'to agree to engage with'".

so, engage. consume. read this book. and fight the good fight.

5 out of 5 stars Not for everybody - great book for producers.......2003-11-06

If you are a record producer or a musician interested in production you are certainly familiar with Eno's work. Have you ever wondered what his routine is like? Well, I did. The book gave me an idea of how he works on a project, how ideas are created in his studio and how he works with musicians.

The book is his diary of 1995 and it is focused on his work, not so much his personal life. There are no juicy gossips and no confessions. It is mostly cold and impersonal. Steps were clearly taken to preserve his personal life. And you have to ignore some of the obvious embelishing (c'mon, Brian, if you are such a good cook, shouldn't you own a restaurant instead?).

But if you are involved in music you will get a glimpse into the tools and processes that make this man one of the great creative minds in contemporary music. And also understand where some of his shortcomings come from.

It is the closest thing to being a guest in his studio for a week.

Apart from the diary there are some texts at the end packed with original ideas.

          Book Description

Samantha only wants to be loved. By her father, by her best friend, and now by the new boy at school, Farouk. The more time Sam spends with him, the more she can’t stop thinking about him. To escape, Sam runs track at school, finishing every race, but never pushing herself to the limit.
Sam and Farouk spend afternoons at the beach where divers risk their lives to jump off high cliffs into the churning water below. Like the divers, Sam risks herself to be with Farouk, growing more and more attached to him, longing to feel safe enough to let herself go and show her true feelings.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Very Realistic.......2005-02-26

Samantha or "Sam" as she is called, is a young lady who runs track at her school. She explains how running makes her body feel alive and the different sounds it makes when she is running and how she is motivated to get better. She gives her passion up when the new boy in school Farouk, pays her attention. He arrives the same day the most popular boy in school (Owen) dies. And so begins this tale in where Sam narrates her life at home with her unfaithful dad who is cheating on his girlfriend, her friendship with her best friend Chloe who cuts herself when she is depressed, and Sam's mother who since divorcing Sam's father lives in another city and communicates with her daughter through the phone and infreqeunt visits. This book touched me in how real it depicts a normal teenager's life and how easy it is to be hurt whether been a teenager or an adult. Sam's homelife and the ultimately love betrayal by Farouk the boy she thought who loved her as she loved him makes for a interesting and thought proving reading. Great first novel by Ms. Lion.

          4 out of 5 stars A great new author..........2004-08-16

Swollen is a story about first love: how it happens, what it feels like, and what it does to you. Sam is a great character; she's not the perfect daughter or student and she knows it, but she's strong and focused and never complains. Her home life isn't perfect either but she accepts it for what it is. Farouk and Sam's relationship is SO well documented, as Melissa Lion really focuses on Sam's feelings and thoughts. Reading this book was very nostalgic for me, because the characters were so real and their relationships reminded me of my own time in high school.

I'm looking forward to reading Melissa Lion's next book when it comes out. Her style is very comfortable, and her observations are sharp and truthful. I felt like she was writing just for me. I devoured this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant.......2004-08-11

Loved it!! Haunting, poetic, & incredibly honest. Death, running, & the complexities of human relationships. Who could ask for more?

The is a true work of art, I felt like I was on an emotional rollercoaster ride, not knowing if I should be sick or scream in excitement. This book really took me beyond the place I was afraid to go.

This is truly a work of art, the twist and turns of an emotional rollercoaster. I didn't know if I should be sick scream for joy. Very powerful imagery.

5 out of 5 stars Poetry Connecting Heart, Soul, World.......2003-04-02

The poetry in LisaAnn LoBasso's "In the Swollen" compelled me to read deeper, like a siren song "read me, read me, connect with my images, resonate with my words, hold me and see me, hear me, taste me....."

While it reads as one woman's story, it is truly a story of connection and disconnection, wholeness and brokenness, fantasy and reality.

                It's about inhaling and exhaling.

                It's about beginnings and endings.

In other words, it's about life.

The characters that inhabit your space and the characters that inhabit the pages of "In the Swollen" could very well be drinking coffee together as we turn the pages and wonder, are we looking into a mirror or are we a part of the mirror?

Favorite selections include "Astute as a Two-Year-Old" which tells the tale, exactly, of the title; "Sweeping" read it out loud and listen carefully you will hear the echoing sounds of a broom across a linoleum floor; "Retreat" kept me waiting and wondering and curious right until the very end and at the same time, I continued to be waiting and wondering and curious.

Read "In the Swollen." Fall "In the Swollen." Move "In the Swollen"
