Book Description
Wildlife biologist Jim Heffelfinger has combed the scientific literature, researched the historical archives, rousted researchers out of retirement, and badgered other southwestern deer biologists for information to create the most comprehensive, accessible, and up-to-date reference yet on mule deer and white-tailed deer (including Coues whitetails) in the North American Southwest.
In this book, anyone interested in deer will be treated to authoritative but nontechnical discussions of deer evolution, natural history, human use, physical characteristics, antler growth, movement, home ranges, density, diets, water requirements, mortality rates, rutting behavior, hybridization, and management. Special attention is given to the questions that continually arise regarding deer:
Can deer see color?
What do they eat?
Can they hear deer-repelling car whistles?
How large is an average home range?
When is the rut?
What causes deformed antlers?
Are "antlered does" really does?
Do predators affect deer populations?
Do mule deer and white-tailed deer interbreed?
Deer of the Southwest will be the definitive popular guide to these highly valued and critically important animals in this region.

Customer Reviews:
A good book, but no bible..........2007-03-12
This is a good book for bowhunters that like to hunt in the early seasons. Doesnt go much into rifle hunting or rifle hunting seasons in which deer tend to be more in the timber. At least thats what I got out of it because he doesnt actually say so. He doesnt really say anything about the regular gun season. Most of his hunts are late summer. Not a bad book though easy to read and understand, just not what I was looking for.
One of the best.......2006-12-28
There are several very good "how to" books available about mule deer hunting but Dwight Schuh's book deserves a spot at the top. I have hunted mulies for many years and this is the one book that I always recommend to the first time mule deer hunter. What makes "Hunting Open Country Mule Deer" especially good is that it offers solid, practical advice on spotting and hunting deer that anyone from the novice to the seasoned hunter will find useful in pursuing the 'grey ghosts'. Schuh is right when he claims that you will become a successful mule deer hunter if you follow the advice in his book.
Schuh does well.......2006-11-04
I found this book very useful. The book is targeted toward bowhunting but the techniques are useful for any other hunting technology you'd care to apply to deer hunting. It does not try to cover all aspects of deer hunting (tracking, weapon choice and ballistics) what it covers is a technique for locating, spotting, stalking, and close approaching big bucks in wide open country. I found the style to be sort of down home but not in an irritating way. And his style does not get in the way of conveying the vital information in this book.
Awesome Stalking and Bowhunting Book.......2005-09-07
I really enjoyed Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer by Dwight Schuh. Dwight described his tactics for stalking mule deer so straight forward that anyone could do it. I hope to try his tactics in the near future. I must admit stalking an animal, within 50 yards, is something that I have never tried. I look forward to the success that he practically guarantees. I highly recommend this book. Dwight doesn't try to make everything sound like a bed of roses; he tells it like it is. After reading several of his books, I have come to appreciate his straight forwardness, honesty and dedication to bowhunting.
Very good book.......2005-01-10
I enjoyed this book immensly. I used some of his tactics this season and it was "succesful." I saw more deer this year than in any other year using the tactics from the book. However, I blew my chance which is no fault of the authors.
You will enjoy the book and find the tactics useful.
Good Hunting!

Book Description
Part memoir, part Japanese American family chronicle, part luminous work of natural history, Volcano tells what happened when Hongo returned to his birthplace in Hawai'i, as a young man, to reclaim its dreamlike landscape and his own elusive past. A magnificant evocation of heritage and place.
Customer Reviews:
Chasing Ghosts from an Invented Past.......2004-11-12
Hongo delights us with his poetic voice and I was expecting big things with this memoir. But doesn't a 'memoir' mean you've spent some meaningful time in a locale and are a bit of an expert on it? Hongo left Hawaii for California at a young age and knows little if anything about the history of the aina. His spiritual angle on looking at a leaf, stream, or hardened lava flow is somewhat interesting but the book lacks any meaningful punch because there is little or no characterization. I was expecting him to reconnect with people from his childhood but there are none. He is chasing ghosts from an invented past and the writing suffers for it.
Mislabled as a memoir of Hawaii, it's a spiritual odyssey.......1999-08-12
This enormously moving book is presented more as a natural history of a land, Hawaii, when it really is a history of one man's soul. Touchingly self revealing, it shares the torment and the ecstasy of one person's search for meaning. I felt the natural history information, the eternal tree and the omnipresent volcano, were metaphors, not the meat of the book. I encourage readers on a personal path of understanding to take on VOLCANO as a guidebook of a singular journey - one that may resonate with many of us. It is wonderful
Customer Reviews:
good series..........2007-03-06
This was a good series from Janette Oke. It isn't one of her best, but I still really enjoyed reading it. I would recommend it to anyone who is already a Janette Oke fan. For new readers I would suggest starting with her other series such as Love Comes Softly or the Canadian West series.
One of my favorites growing up........2005-12-01
Originally my mom introduced me to this series because she thought I would enjoy it because it was from a guys perspective. Well she was right. I cant even count how many times I read through each of the books. I could always imagine being right there with him as he told his story. Eventually I was given this book collecting all four novels and again read through it over and over again. This being the only Janette Oke series I have read I cant really base it off of the other ones. But for me it was a great way to spend a rainy day or just any other time I felt like picking up a book.
All right overall.......2002-05-14
Personally, I don't care for the way Janette Oke used the first-person style of writing, with a man as her main character. Her man just doesn't seem like a real man, mainly because he acts and thinks along the same lines as Janette's women do in her other books. Overall, it was a mistake for her to use a guy to tell the story- I think the books would have been vastly better if Janette had used a girl's perspective.
Aside from that complaint-
This story begins with the childhood of the "narrator", and goes through the boy's growing-up years on the farm. Everything is peaceful and happy. Little incidents occur here and there- his grandfather comes to live with them, he gets his first dog, etc. Finally, he becomes a man. One night he overhears the men downstairs discussing the fact that he needs to get married. He decides that yes, he should get married, so bang! he goes out and does it. Then the books tell about his married life (I liked his wife, by the way.) During his married life they go through the Depression and he winds up on a road crew far from home. All of a sudden, at the very end, everything is resolved and he gets to go home.
Generally this story is pretty good, but I've read many books by Janette Oke that are much better. Like I said, I think what messed up this series was trying to use the guy's perspective. It just isn't quite right.
Seasons Series.......2001-08-04
I am an avid fan of Janette Oke, and have read every thing she has published. This is indeed a wonderful series, with descriptive scenes and true romance. If you haven't tried this one--give it a chance-it is a beautiful story.
A book full of help.......2001-07-27
Ilove all of mrs okes books she has given me a new perception of life through her books and i would like to thank her for having such an amazing gift and sharing it with the world
Book Description
The first nine books in the popular Christy Miller series are now available in three treasured volumes!
Bestselling author Robin Jones Gunn packs each one with enough action, romance, and drama to keep you reading and wanting more. It all starts the summer Christy vacations on a California beach and meets two friends who change her life forever. But after moving across the country with her family, Christy must begin her sophomore year of high school uncertain where she’ll fit in. A red-headed new best friend, a try at cheerleading, a job at a pet store, and expectations for the prom fill Christy’s high school years with a string of laughter-and-tears moments. Fireball Katie keeps everyone guessing what she’ll do next, and surfer Todd keeps showing up while popular Rick has determined to get her full attention! As these memorable years unfold, Christy and her God-loving friends find out what it means to be a “peculiar treasure.” Follow Christy Miller as she stays true to her identity in Christ, drawing closer to God for help in realizing her dreams and dealing with her disappointments.
Whether you’re meeting her for the first time or have known her for years—
Christy Is a Forever Friend
Summer Promise
Fourteen-year-old Christy Miller has the dream summer ahead of her in sun-kissed California, staying with her aunt and uncle at their beachfront home. Aunt Marti loves to shop, and those surfers are cute—especially Todd. Christy promised her parents she wouldn’t do anything she’d regret later, and some of her beach friends are a little wild. But Todd and his “God-Lover” friends are giving Christy a new image of all things eternal. Can this summer live up to its promise?
A Whisper and a Wish
Christy’s family has moved to California just in time for her sophomore year of high school. But they’re not in Newport Beach, where she spent the summer. Instead they’re an hour and a half away and Christy has to start all over making friends. Despite an embarrassing escapade at a slumber party, things are going pretty well...until some midnight fun leads to a trip to the police station. Does God really hear every whisper? Does He know our every wish? Then why is it so hard to know who your friends really are?
Yours Forever
Christy is back at Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob’s house on the beach for the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s...and Todd is in town, too! The cute surfer completely captured Christy’s heart last summer, and she’s eager to spend every possible minute with him. But soon Christy and her aunt are barely speaking, and it seems like all her friends are mad at her, too—including Todd! Is he hers or isn’t he? And why would God let things get so tangled?
Story Behind the Book
“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise. I love that!”

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ROBIN JONES GUNN!!!!.......2007-07-23
After many failed attempts during the past few years to find a book or series of books for her to read for pleasure, I gave this book to my 14 yr. old daughter, Amber, in June hoping she would enjoy reading it this summer...I am thrilled to say that she couldn't put it down!!! Not only have I also purchased Vols. II, III and IV for her (she is currently reading Vol. IV)...she has shared her love of the books with her friends and now they have the series and are reading them!!! This has made me so very happy...especially since these are Christian based books with valuable life lessons for our teens. What a wonderful gift to be able to give to our teenage daughters in this challenging & confusing world we live in~~~Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Robin Jones Gunn...from the bottom of my heart!!!!
A must-read.......2007-07-07
The first three books in this series are great! It's really hard to put the book down once you've started reading. The three books are fresh, invigorating, very realistic and heartfelt. They really bring you closer to God. I love them!
A great read.......2007-06-01
In SUMMER PROMISE, the first book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, a farm girl from Wisconsin is invited by her aunt and uncle to spend the summer with them in ritzy Newport Beach, California. However, upon arrival, Christy Miller realizes that she certainly does not fit in with the glamorous crowd that inhabits the town. After rejection and embarrassment, Christy's Aunt Marti suggests that she undergo a makeover; perhaps a transformation is all she needs to make some new friends. With an expensive new wardrobe and a stylish haircut, Christy finds that she indeed captures the attention of Todd and Shawn, the classically good-looking surfer boys, as well as Alissa, a stunning older girl who has lived all over the world.
All seems to go well until Christy realizes that her new friends may have an entirely different definition of a good time. Shawn invites Christy to a party, and she soon learns that it may be unlike any party she has ever been to. After being ignored or laughed at by most of those in attendance, and uncomfortable with the presence of alcohol and drugs, Christy decides to get out. While she makes a wise choice, others do not, and the night soon ends with a tragedy that will change the rest of the summer. Afterwards, Christy begins spending more time with Todd, who opens up to her about his strong faith in God.
Although she has gone to church all her life, Todd introduces her to a new group of people who are serious about faith in a way she has never experienced before. At the same time, Aunt Marti's constant nagging and desire to "improve" Christy begin to eat away at her self-esteem. As her world seems to move faster than it ever has, will Christy be able to live up to the promise she made to her parents not to do anything she will regret? Will she finally be able to figure out how gorgeous, sensitive Todd really feels about her? And why is she being forced to suddenly return home?
SUMMER PROMISE is an excellent beginning to the Christy Miller series. Fans of TV shows such as "The OC" and "Summerland" undoubtedly will appreciate the familiar beach setting and situations. Gunn does an excellent job of filling the book with a plot that is not quite as predictable as those usually found in teen fiction, as well as keeping up with the latest pop-culture references. It tackles many issues, such as self-image and family problems, but underlying all of this is Christy's newfound ideas about God. SUMMER PROMISE is a great read, with an ending that does not resort to the contrived and surely will have readers eagerly awaiting Christy's future adventures.

I just fell in love with the Christy Miller series. Finally theres a great Christian teen book out there with actual morels. Its a nice break from Gossip girls. It opened up my eyes about God and everything. It also opened my life to reading. This book shows that Christians make mistakes too. If your a girl interested in Christianity then you should definitely read the bible first but if your just looking for someone to relate to i would recommend this book.
Christy and Todd are so sweet!.......2007-03-28
This one was AMAZING. Now I want to go to Disneyland to do all the things Christy did and re-live that experience. You're really rooting for her to get together with Todd. I got the volume, and I read all of this one in a day or two, I was hooked! These are my favorite series ever, and I doubt that will change soon.
-pokes post below this one- Read the college years :P You'll find that her romance with Todd is more consistent, and it might change your view on romance novels.

SAVOUR THIS BOOK!!! possible spoilers:Warning.......2005-09-01
One word: wow. When I first heard of this series I was not expecting anything like this. I finished it in one hour. I couldn't put it down. When I was finished, I was so sad that there wasn't going to be another one in the series.
It made me sp irritated at times where Sam did that repulsive thing to Ellie and how Charlotte was so disgusting and rude. I found it rather dramatic and romantic with how all the hidden loves that were in the family and how Ellie realizes that her family isn't so picture perfect after all. She learns that her mother and her next door neighbor had been in love since they were kids and they had an affain before Ellie was born. Then Mr. Ranson gets Mrs. Wells pregnant with Ellie and she learns that her father is actually Mr. Ransom. I thought it was so cute with the two grandparents finally being together after so many years of being seperated by their parents. I rather liked Sam but in this book, my liking for him was put out quite a bit. I just couldn't think of anyone doing such a thing to the one that they love. Ellie just asked for one thing and then he took it completely out of proportion and didn't even say he was sorry afterwards. He just continued to torture her and then she takes him back because he gets his arm hurt in a storm. I found it rather sad that Mrs. Wells and Mr. Ransom had to be seperated once again. I just think its sad because they loved each other so much and would forever, I think. But Mrs. Wells did put him back in line after she felt like he was putting her second place to his writing. I wish that the author would write more books to the series. It's so good and just sucks you in. You can't help but want more after your finished. Buy the book. I highly recommend it.
a promise of excellence.......2005-06-30

She knows she can break Ethan and Charlotte up by offering Charlotte the one thing she has always wanted and never been able to have....her boyfriend, Sam. Can Elli save her family and her relationship? Or will the dark secrets of the past finally come out, and destroy Elli and Ethan?
Extremely good book for teenage romancers........1998-08-24
This Book will make you laugh and cry. Its full of wonderful love stories that make you wish you had you own Silver Beach to escape to. The carachters are so familiar to teens, that you feel very close to them. Its a combination of stories almost all teen girls can relate to. First love, Break ups, heartaches, and more. A wonderful book to complete the exquizid series. You'll be sorry thier stories are over.
