Friend of Walt Whitman, companion to Theodore Roosevelt, and friendly rival of John Muir, John Burroughs is seldom read today. But in the last decades of the 19th century, his prolific nature essays helped spawn the Nature Study movement and made him an international celebrity. In 1875 Henry James praised his "real genius" for natural history and called him a "more humorous, more available, and more sociable Thoreau." In this illustrated biography, Edward Kanze sketches the trajectory of Burroughs's long career, from his childhood on a farm in the Catskills to his decades in retirement along the Hudson River.

As early as 1871, when his first book of nature essays was published, Burroughs was acclaimed as an American Gilbert White, the pioneering British naturalist and author of The Natural History of Selborne. Readers were charmed by Burroughs's enthusiastic accounts of ordinary walks made extraordinary by keen observation. By the late 1880s, when his first collection of nature essays for children was published, he was one of America's most popular interpreters of the natural world. He kept writing until 1921, when he died at the age of 84.

Edward Kanze, a naturalist and writer, has written an engaging narrative that nevertheless leaves the reader hungry for more information. The photographs, though pleasant, are sometimes tangential: "mourning doves reminded Burroughs of their extinct relations, the passenger pigeons," reads one caption. The biography may succeed as an introduction to Burroughs's life, but in the end one wishes for more of the master's own prose and a better sense of its social context. --Pete Holloran

                    Book Description

John Burroughs was one of the earliest and most articulate pioneers of the United States conservation movement, publishing twenty-eight books on the natural world during the height of the Industrial Revolution. As an author, teacher, and poet, he wrote with intimacy and feeling, illustrating verbal landscapes and providing philosophical insights about the environment. People by the hundreds of thousands relished his writings. The World of John Burroughs focuses not only on his work, but also on Burroughs's personal life. His friends included Walt Whitman, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, and John Muir. The text is enhanced by Burroughs's essays and poems, and, uniquely, by endearing recollections of his granddaughter. With engaging narrative and illuminating photographs by author Edward Kanze, The World of John Burroughs celebrates Burroughs's dedication to studying the world and making nature come to life on the written page.

Well researched, embellished with the author's gorgeous photos, this book is a joy to read. It is a biography and more!

5 out of 5 stars For the mind and the eyes.......2000-02-09

The World of John Burroughs is a very readable biography of this great naturalist and writer. It is also refreshment for the eyes. Many photographs help portray the land and people that helped to shape this man. As a great grand niece of JB, I highly recommend this book for its accuracy and beauty.

                    1 out of 5 stars Too brief.......2000-01-13

There is a lot more to the story of John Burroughs than what is included here. We need to understand the social and historical context in which Burroughs lived and wrote, and Kanze does not help us.

1 out of 5 stars Good pics but brief bio.......1999-12-03

This large-format table-top picture book provides a wealth of photographs of John Burroughs but a very light and brief biography of the man. There is not much text. Great illustrations, but for details on JB's life go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Clear prose, meticulous research, stunning illustration.......1999-10-15

John Burroughs, the naturalist and philosopher, was a best-seller in his day (the late 19th century and early 20th), a Thoreau without rough edges and politics. If he has enjoyed a revival in recent years it is probably due to Ed Kanze's stunningly written and attractively presented biography, "The World of John Burroughs,'' published by Abrams in 1993, and now out of print. The good news: Sierra Club Books has come out with this paperback version. Some of Burroughs is dated today, and as Kanze notes, he published some mediocre essays along with the good stuff. But much of Burroughs' nature writings are brilliant in their painstaking observation and solid prose:

"Most persons think the bee gets honey from the flowers, but she does not: honey is a product of the bee; it is the nectar of the flowers with the bee added. What the bee gets from the flower is sweet water: this she puts through a process of her own and imparts to it her own quality."

Kanze, like a good conversationalist, leads the reader gently through Burroughs' life and writings. Burroughs was a real 19th-century figure: He consorted with the literary likes of John Muir and William Dean Howells and in later life was a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Ford -- not to mention the Vassar girls who visited him at his rustic Hudson Valley hideaway, Slabsides. (Burroughs' private life was, in a word, difficult, and Kanze is unstinting in dealing with the birth of his one -- illegitimate -- child.) It is not surprising that Kanze is a naturalist himself and has been a museum curator. The book has the feel of a nature walk or a good museum exhibit, in which a subject not readily familiar to the reader becomes fascinating with the help of a terrific guide. There are well-chosen historical photographs and the luminous nature photography of the author, each photo chosen for its relevance to one or another passage from Burroughs' work. Particularly moving are the photos of Burroughs in Slabsides; paired with Kanze's own color photos of the house's preserved interior. You find your eye traveling back and forth from the old photo to the new, to see the same fireplace stone here, the unpeeled birch desk there.

                        Book Description

This volume highlights the new synthesis of pollination biology and plant mating systems which is rejuvenating the two-hundred-year-old discipline of floral biology. It provides a current examination of the evolution and functional significance of floral traits in animal-pollinated plants, combining ecological and genetic studies with natural history approaches and theoretical modeling. Divided into three sections, the book begins with the first English translation of Christian Konrad. Sprengel's introduction to his classic work and a historical analysis of his observations. The second section addresses current conceptual problems in floral biology, concentrating on floral diversification, floral longevity, pollen dispersal and mating patterns, the ecology of geitonogamous pollination, and flower size dimorphism in plants with unisexual flowers. The final chapters of the book examine model systems and include the evolution of floral morphology and function, deceit pollination, reproductive success and gender variation, stylar polymorphisms, and the evolution of flowers in relation to insect pollinators on islands. With its a detailed treatment of the selective forces shaping floral diversification in animal-pollinated plants, Floral Biology provides ecologists, evolutionary biologists, and botanists with a wealth of current information. Everyone interested in the evolution of flowering plants will benefit from this timely, authoritative resource on the interactions between insects and plants.

                        Book Description

"This is an absolutely delightful book. Barth, an outstanding sensory physiologist, has written the story of the partnership between insects and flowers with a much needed emphasis on the insects' sensory world."--Bert Hlldobler, Alexander Agassiz Professor of Zoology, Harvard University "The author's style, excellently conveyed in translation, is sprightly and engaging. Numerous descriptions of experimental procedures and frequent references to the prominent investigators take the book beyond a `facts-only' approach."--Alexander F. Motten, The Quarterly Review of Biology "The sometimes bizarre and fantastic ways in which flowers ensure pollination has been the material for numerous excellent books, most of them written from a botanical perspective. There is also, however, an equally interesting zoological side to the story.... Barth's book serves as an introduction to this world of insects and plants, highlighting many recent discoveries about their coevolution."--Bernd Heinrich, Orion Nature Quarterly "Wonderfully interesting.... This book should reach the hands of all kinds of biologists, nature enthusiasts, and those gardeners who wonder about the whys and hows of their growing plants."--Alma L. Moldenke, Phytologia "Once in a long while, a book comes along that is an unqualified delight. Insects and Flowers is such a book.... Examples of flower/insect partnerships are presented in lucid prose reminiscent of the best of Charles Darwin's expositions. This is scientific writing of an uncommonly high order."--R. F. Sutton, The Forestry Chronicle

                        5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2003-09-08

This book had been recommended by a naturalist from whom I was taking an insect class and I'm really glad I bought it. The pictures (both actual photos and drawings throughout) are terrific - really clear and add a lot to the text. The book walks through everything that goes on in the relationship between plants and insects. Here are just a few of the subjects covered:
                        - the kaleidescope of flower forms
                        - self-pollination and cross-pollination
                        - the pollen grain
                        - baskets, brushes and sweeping nachines
                        - nectar
                        - insects see colors
                        - bee colors and flower colors
                        - scent and smelling
                        - tasting with their feet
                        - learning and forgetting
                        - keeping track of time
                        - evolution of the Bee dance

The writing is very easy to read for the person who is not a scientist like me but who really wants to learn more about what really goes on between insects and plants. It goes deeper than most books but the text doesn't make you feel like you need a scientific dictionary to understand it. Very cool book.

THE MAGIC HAD ALWAYS BEEN THERE.

Tep Jones has always felt the magic of Picture House, an Anasazi cliff dwelling near the seed farm where he lives with his parents. But he could never have imagined what would happen to him on the night of a lunar eclipse, when he finds a bone flute left behind by grave robbers. Tep falls under the spell of a powerful ancient magic that traps him at night in the body of an animal.

Only by unraveling the mysteries of Picture House can Tep save himself and his desperately ill mother. Does the enigmatic old Indian who calls himself Cricket hold the key to unlocking the secrets of the past? And can Tep find the answers in time?

Kokopelli's Flute is a delightful fantasy. It centers around a family of three who live in the desert and raise "heritage seeds". Heritage seeds are seeds for plants that have fallen out of favor in our commercial times. Seeds cannot survive forever. They must be planted and new seeds harvested in order to keep the DNA from becoming extinct. Against this background, the son visits an ancient cliff dwelling. He discovers some men are trying to illegally ransack the ruins for artifacts they can sell. In the course of this discovery, he takes possession of a bone flute. When he blows on the flute he enables some magic that transforms him into an animal every night. He discovers that being an animal has its benefits but also many dangers! He needs to thwart the criminals and also discover how to negate the flute's magic. In addition to enjoying an engrossing story, one learns a great deal of factual material about heritage seeds and archeology. I have enjoyed all the titles that I have read by this author but I think this is one of my favorites.

In the moonlight of a total eclipse, young Tepary Jones's first lunar eclipse, a tragedy occurred. The last untouched Indian site was being robbed of priceless pottery. Two pothunters had come to rob the picture house. Though suspicious, Tep undertakes to run them off.

The superstitious pothunters are easily driven away. After an owl hoot, Tep lit a tumbleweed and dropped it over the cliff, causing it to burn away in the air sending them running. When he took a closer look at the dig, he found a basket containing ancient medicine and an eagle bone flute. Though he knew better, Tep put the flute to his lips and blew one magical note. He laughed, watching a wood rat coming to hear the music. The next morning the famous Mr. K, a secret botanist, sent another package containing once again beans for the seed farm. Among the package of beans were also strange types of gourd that will become life saving in the future. After a hard day's work planting the seeds, Tep goes back to his room to bed and watches his pet opossum come through a hole in the roof. As the sun goes down Tep feels funny, looks at his hands and comprehends he has turned into a wood rat. Remembering that Wood rats are an opossum's main diet, Tep was almost eaten by his pet. Tep's inquisitive single note on the eagle bone flute had turned him into the rat by night.

An epidemic virus that is carried by pack rats and crossed transmitted to humans who die from the virus is sweeping the desert. The only cure for the virus is the medicine Tep found in the ancient basket. Tep, being a wood rat in size, is unable to retrieve the medicine. Taking the flute from the basket in desperation, Tep breaks the code with three blows on the flute and returns to human form. This allows him to carry the medicine back and save the day.

Kokopelli's Flute, named for the one Tep found in the basket, is a twisted story of heroism. I found the story enchantingly good. I recommend this book.

I read Kokopelli's flute a few weeks ago. When I finished, which was after a couple days, i enjoyed it. it had an intriguing plot, and was exciting. The story-line kept me interested, but I thought that the book lacked depth. its was kind of fluffy, and aimed wards children. I did enjoy the literary componets of the corporate developability. I only gave the book 3 stars out of five, for the lack of personal connection, and charactor development.
                                      My compliments to the author.

2 out of 5 stars Another book about Kokopelli.......2007-02-02

I recently read about seven books on Kokopelli--the hunchbacked, fluteplaying icon of the Southwest's chip platters and earrings--while researching an article for www[dot]mystrangenewmexico[dot]com, and this one was notable for how completely, totally unmemorable it was.
I read it just over a month ago, in a perfectly lucid state of mind, and yet, I can now remember nothing from it, other than that it's much less racy than its title implied, and that it appeared to be handprinted and handbound (stapled) by the author himself.
I'm not saying it was bad--just that nothing in it stands out to me now from all the other stuff I read on the subject.

This is a great detective novel. Serra's writing invests you in the characters and the threading of the plot was wonderful. I rank this as one of the best novels I've read this year.
