Book Description
They told him his uncle died in a car accident. But fourteen-year-old Alex knows that's a lie, and the bullet holes in his uncle's windshield confirm his suspicions. But nothing could prepare him for the news that the uncle he always thought he knew was really a spy for MI6-Britain's top secret intelligence agency. Recruited to find his uncle's killers and complete his final mission, Alex suddenly finds himself caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
"What if James Bond had started spying as a teenager? Non-stop action keeps the intrigue boiling." (Kirkus Reviews)

Stormbreaker.......2007-10-09
Stormbraker is a captivating book. It has you guessing all the way through. This book is about a young boy named Alex Rider. He was living in England with his uncle. He was living with his uncle ever since his parents died. One day the police came and gave him the news that his uncle had gotten in a car crash and had died. He didn't believe it. So he went to a junkyard where he found his uncle's car. After close examination he realized it was no accident. While at the junkyard he was captured by some people. Later he found out that they were from a spy group, and that his uncle was one of them.
When he was with the head of the spy group he had some questions to ask. The head told him about his uncle's job and the mission that he was on. Stormbraker. He was told that there was a man. Heron Sayle. Who was making computers that were some sort of trap. and he was going to give them to every school in England. Alex's job was to take over from where his uncle left of.
He went through weeks of training to get prepared for his mission. During training every one was given animal names like fox and wolf, they called him Cub. At first no one liked him. But as the weeks went on they grew more and more fond of him. It was a constant challenge for him to keep up with them. They were older and stronger than him but he muscled through it. After his training was complete, he was told that a boy had been chosen to come and test out the stormbraker. The agency sent him to an island so that Alex could take his place. A few days later he went to the head courtiers of the stormbraker factory where found some interesting clues into his uncles murder.
Bookmom's Review - Stormbreaker.......2007-10-05
[Fun: 5/5] [Learning: 3/5] [Suitable: 4/5]
For a great action-packed James Bond-esque novel for kids, this has to be the winner. Full of action and adventure, the story follows a reluctant boy-spy for MI6 through his mission to gather information, which inevitably turns out to be a much bigger assignment than anyone would have guessed. Though the book dates itself (several of his gadgets are made from already outdated technology), it does a good job of pulling off the spy-thriller feel. Predictable in points, and a bit violent, Horowitz does do a good job of keeping the gore to a minimum. Though rather cliche (what spy book isn't anymore), it is a fun action read.
Audience:
* Teen Readers (Grades 8-12)
Positive Themes:
* Ingenuity
* Good vs. Evil
Objectionable Content:
* Violence
* Some graphic scenes
My Recommendations:
* Readers may also enjoy the Young James Bond series by Charlie Higson, as well as other teen books by Anthony Horowitz.

I know James Bond, and you're no James Bond.......2007-10-03
I can see why this book and series are so popular-- full of action, cliff-hanger, real danger, technology, and a big story. I don't fault any of this. And I don't mind the similarities with Bond, even down to the characatured cast of villians. But where Stormbreaker lost stars for me was that Alex himself was not enough like Bond. Alex isn't too perfect; he just isn't heroic enough. Take the playboy out of Bond and he's still a patriot. Alex is too post-modern I suppose for that. But then why go through with the whole mess in the first place? It's not revenge. It's not love of country. Then what? Alex needs more than fear of eviction to drive him to fight evil.
Audiobook Review.......2007-09-22
I found the audiobook version of "Stormbreaker" at my local library. It looked like a good story, so I checked it out and listened to it. I was amazed. Anthony Horowitz writes a superb story, and Nathaniel Parker is a wonderful narrator. All of the foreign accents sound great, and the story moves along quickly, especially toward the end. I suggest this if you like well-performed audiobooks.
Action, Adventure, and Cool Gadgets.......2007-09-20
Alex Rider was a pretty normal English schoolboy. At 14, he had a rich uncle who was an "international banker" but, as his uncle dies in a mysterious crash, the even doesn't fit. Ian Rider was too careful. He wasn't careless enough to die in a car crash. As Alex inspects his uncle's car, he discovers bullet holes. Bullet holes in a car crash? What's happening? As Alex is almost crushed, then cut, then pulverized in a compacter, he also notices a label, Royal & General Bank, supposedly the bank Ian Rider works for. It seems unlikely, but what other clue does Alex have? He finds Royal & General, and discovers that his Uncle's whole life was a lie. He takes a job for them, but it's far from banking as you can get. As the book unfolds, Alex in whisked away on a crazy adventure for Britain's best, and most secretive, intelligence agency that he, and readers, will never forget. The nonstop action and adventure in this series will leave you wanting more Rider. It did for me. I thought these books were amazing; so what did I do? I read the next one. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes action, adventure, or cool gadgets.

Book Description
They have become a phenomenon. The Alex Rider adventures are now bestsellers the world over, and the book that started it all, Stormbreaker, is soon to be a major motion picture. Now is your chance to see this book visualized in a brand-new format, with bold, edgy, manga-like illustrations that bring Alex Rider to life in a way not seen before. For existing fans of the series, this graphic novel will be a must-have; for those yet to discover Stormbreaker, this will be the perfect introduction.

Creative Re-imagining of the Alex Rider Series.......2007-07-06
This is a creative re-imagining of the Alex Rider series. This novel closely follows the plot of the first novel. Alex Rider lives with his distant Uncle until his Uncle's sudden and surprising death. Alex soon learns that his Uncle was actually a spy and is recruited to finish his last mission, to find out what secret the rich and reclusive Harold Sayle is hiding. Alex, in the role of teenage James Bond, gets his own gadets and will rely on those, as well as his quick thinking, to save Britain from Sayle's evil plot.
This popular series is actually enhanced by the change into the graphic novel format. The pictures enhance the action and suspense of the story, making an already accessible story even more accessible. Readers who love the series, as well as those who never have read the book, will both enjoy this engaging and well done graphic novel.
Good for reluctant readers.......2007-05-08
I teach junior high students. I had a lot of kids read the novel version who also liked the graphic novel. Also, this book was good for bridging kids from graphic stories to other kinds of text.

Remnants of Asgard.......2007-03-30
During the much maligned Avengers: Disassembled storyline, Marvel icon Thor, as well as his fellow Asgardians, met their demise in a cataclysmic final battle orchestrated by Powers artist Michael Avon Oeming. Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill picks up shortly after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, in which longtime Thor ally Beta Ray Bill is Asgard's lone survivor, which may not last long as he comes across the new herald of the planet eating Galactus: Stardust. Surprisingly packed with enough history of what is otherwise a minor character, Stormbreaker packs enough action and surprises to keep readers interested, but it's nowhere near as good or prolific as Ragnarok. It's one big low point is the ending, which seems rushed and feels out of place. Despite that though, Stormbreaker is quite good, and features a new direction for the character as well. Andrea DiVitto, who provided the excellent artwork in the aforementioned TPB, provides art here as well, and it's great here too. All in all, if you're a Thor fan, Stormbreaker definitely deserves checking out.
Solid beginning and middle, hacked ending.......2006-07-10
I'm a fan of Beta Ray Bill, Marvel Comics' alien, co-incarnation of their Thunder god Thor character.
So when the "Stormbreaker: The Saga of Beta Ray Bill" miniseries was released as a trade paperback, I picked it up right away.
Bill was created by Walt Simonson, and it's hard to compete with that caliber of talent, but Daniel Berman, Michael Avon Oeming/Andrea Di Vito do a solid job on the story and art.
The beginning is strong, the emotion and stakes are well-articulated, and though the cosmic battles could go the tiresome way of the Dragonball Z "Frieza Saga", they're kept pretty tight and engaging.
It's the series' ending with which I have a problem.
I have to be vague to avoid spoilers, but the last issue tie-in to the Marvel Universe seems like a forced marketing tie-in, and the last-minute dovetail to the origin of Thor (abandoned for Thor himself for a reason) and nod to Simonson seems (to me) hacked. Overall, it weakens the saga.
On the upside, maybe this will give Bill some more play in Marvel Universe.
I'd recommend this trade for Beta Ray Bill fans. For those unfamiliar with the character, I'd recommend "The Mightly Thor in The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill" trade paperback, which collects Simonson's introduction of the character.
Great Story - awesome characters.......2006-02-01
I am a huge Beta Ray Bill fan, and wish he would become a bigger player in the Marvel Universe. I have always been a Thor fan, but I think Bill is even a better character. The enemies battled in this saga are immensly powerful, and it's good to see Bill use his considerable might. The artwork is fantastic as well. If you are a Beta Ray Bill fan, or you like awesome cosmic struggles, this book will not disapoint.
A Hero's Last Stand..........2005-12-29
A very satisfying compliment to Thor: Disassembled. Once Thor & the rest of Asgard is gone as a result of Ragnarok, we assume that will be the end of all adventures even loosely tied to Asgard. Wrong! You can see what happens to the last being bestowed with the power of Odin in this trade collecting the 6 issues of the Beta Ray Bill mini-series. You get Galactus, his new herald, cosmic combat, and of course, as any good Marvel mini-series would have, a guest appearance by Spider-Man. I highly reccomend this book due to the strong story and art, as well as brining new life to an old fan favorite character that sorely deserves his time in the spotlight.
Beta Ray Bill is one of my favorite Marvel characters...........2005-08-25

Andrea Divito(penciller).
reprints the original mini-series #1-6.
The Characters:
. Beta Ray Bill - Planet Korbin's champion. Thor's brother-in-arms. The book's lead character.
. Skuttlebutt - Beta Ray Bill's sentient battleship & his long-time best friend.
. Stardust - Galactus' new herald.
. Asteroth - Beta Ray Bill's adversary.
. Alpha Ray - Planet Korbin's first champion.
. the Korbinites - Planet Korbin's people.
. Ashta

. Spider-man
Beta Ray Bill's planet Korbin, the Korbinites, & their ways of life begin the story.
Their story is talky, interesting, & meticulous. Stardust, Skuttlebutt, & Galactus also make their appearances.
Very good beginning!(*****)
The subplot(primary) is something that should not be in this book. It is not important(as opposed to its belief). It is out of place(although it is surprisingly good).
Beta Ray Bill is not even in it.
Beta Ray Bill & Stardust have many fights in this book. They are not very good(contrived).
Skuttlebutt has a good part.
The "Thor: Ragnarok" arc is a little related to this book.
The "Thor: Ragnarok"(Avengers Disassembled: Thor TP) is a very, very good story. It is hardcore, heavy, dramatic, & with exciting fight sequences. "Stormbreaker: The Saga Of Beta Ray Bill TP" is not nearly as good.
