Great book to have on the canyon for river runners.......2007-06-05
Loads of detail. Really liked this book.
- River and Desert Plants of the Grand Canyon by Kristin Huisinga, Lori Makarick and Kate Watters published 2006 by Mountain Press Publishing Company Missoula, Montana PO Box 2399, Missoula, Montana 59806 (406) 728-1900 Great book!

Kenneth Hamblin and J. Keith Rigby. Indepth mile by mile with some pictures etc. They are only $5 a piece. A publication of the Department of Geology, Brigham Young University Provo, Utah 84602.
Field Guide to Grand Canyon.......2006-11-11
Useful guide for visitors who are hiking, but limited use for river runners.
nice intro to canyon flora and fauna.......2006-06-12
This book was a nice introduction to the geology, plant and animal life of the grand canyon. It is small enough to take in your pack and is fun to read once you've arrived at camp and try to identify the plants, animals and strata you saw. Not too much specific information about any one species, strata, etc., but good general intros to flora, cacti, etc. I'd recommend it if it's your first hike in the canyon and you're just looking for a simple book to become familiar with the names of thing. You can find it in the gift shops on both rims too.
best available guide to plants and wildlife.......2005-04-14
Handy easy-to-use guide to birds, flowers, cacti, wildflowers, reptiles, mammals, geology of the grand canyon. Nothing like it anywhere.
Concise, and yet thorough.......2000-01-26
I agree with everything the previous reviewer said, except that I really like the overviews of Canyon geology and so on, and don't feel that those make to book too heavy to be useful as a field guide. This is probably the best and most informative guide for a hiker or visitor to the Grand Canyon to take along.

wonderful direct engagement with water.......2004-01-21
As was written by the copy editor to introduce the foreword by Ms. Zwinger to my recently published book "Deep Immersion: Thoreau's Engagement with Water" (Green Frigate Books): "Few have ever been so 'haunted by waters' - to use Norman Maclean's wonderful phrase - as has naturalist and 'water logged' nature writer Ann Haymond Zwinger." This particlar book, like all of her works, very much offers a deep well for thirsty minds.
Seductive prose, incisive observations from the bottom........1999-09-01
Ann Haymond Zwinger has contributed her scientific expertise to subsidized, multi-week inner-canyon environmental impact expeditions, has run each of the Canyon's rapids countless times (in nearly each month of the year), in every sort of water craft. What her scientific eye takes in, her pen transmutes into its own river of irresistible prose, carrying the reader, willing or not, from one chapter to the next. As a hiker, I expected the vision of a "boat person" to suffer from its constricted horizons. A bottom-up myopia. Instead, we find ourselves soaring with eagles. We climb cliffs, clawing our way through a darkness of thorns and pain. We crawl along brushy beaver tunnels. We ponder the local history and lore...and the primeval past. Our journey evokes visions of thousand foot-high lava dams filling the entire Canyon with water, as well as today's horror of a rapid at Lava Falls. While some of her snippets of local human history are rarely mentioned in other books about the Canyon, Zwinger's forte is in the natural sciences. In that arena, she has no peer among Grand Canyon authors. Since this is not a trail manual, it is not easy to restrict one's reading to a single, specific Canyon location. Rather, the chapters are organized by seasons of the year. No matter. If you start at the beginning, its 220 or so pages of narrative will sweep you into their main current and, well... I'll see you below the rapids.
Book Description
Just south of the Grand Canyon lies a range of volcanic mountains which includes the highest point in Arizona. For the first time, this book provides a popular look at the fiery origin of these volcanic features. With magnificent aerial photographs, original geologic illustrations, and detailed road logs to many of the key features, this book is an indispensable tool for the traveler, the educator, and all who are interested in the remarkable landscape of northern Arizona.
Customer Reviews:
Why such a high cost?.......2006-06-14
This is a very good book and well worth the listed price of $11.95. But why is Amazon selling it for $14.95? If you live in or are traveling through Northern Arizona, pick it up at any bookstore or National Park outlet for the list price of $11.95. Don't pay the Amazon $3.00 primium.
Volcanoes: what they are and how they work.......2001-11-28
Volcanoes are among the most interesting, awesome, and dangerous of geological phenomena. The also form many of the highest mountains we know-Olympus Mons on Mars, Mauna Kea, Popocatepetl, Kilimanjaro and many others on Earth. In spite of this, the average person has only an imprecise idea of what volcanos are and how they work. Duffield's fine book comes to the rescue.
The book addresses specifically volcanoes to be found in northern Arizona, so includes many pages of road logs intended for the resident or visitor to the area, pleasant excursions whose purpose is to illustrate a wealth of volcanic features. The rest of the book, however, is invaluable to anyone interested in learning more about volcanoes anywhere. Even though Duffield is a professional volcanologist of considerable repute, he uses clear language pleasantly free of technical jargon and aimed at the non-specialist. The many illustrations are lucid and well done, and the wonderful photographs by Michael Collier are a splendid asset.
The person interested in learning about volcanoes won't go wrong with this fine book.
Exemplary popular-science writing & gorgeous photos.......2001-07-29
______________________________________________
This book is a wonderful introduction to the San Francisco volcanic field, which created the high country around Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks, the highest mountains in Arizona. Duffield writes in a clear, direct style that's a pleasure to read. The book grew out of a long series of talks and lectures he's given around the Flagstaff - Grand Canyon area -- he quotes a fifth-grader who wrote a thank-you note for "being interesting and not boring," which is a nice capsule review of _Volcanoes_.
Although he's writing for a general audience, geologists who aren't intimately familiar with Northen Arizona will learn of some neat new discoveries -- such as the remarkable similarity between the Mt. St. Helens blowout and the Peaks' long-puzzling Inner Basin (p. 25). And that recent lava-dams on the Colorado River (near present-day Lava Falls) made lakes in Grand Canyon nearly half a mile deep!
And anyone with working eyes will be pleased with Michael Collier's splendid aerial photos -- if you're new to Collier, you will want to seek out his beautiful, large-format _Arizona : A View from Above_, which might be the best book of artistic air photos yet published (and which, sadly, is out of print).

An excellent and invaluable guide when sightseeing Flagstaff.......1998-06-22
This book covers it all. Accessible text describes in a concise, but not condescending manner, the history of volcanoes in the northern Arizona and Flagstaff area. Excellent, even striking photography. Fine maps and drawings accent the text. This book is suitable reading material for professionals, college students and tourists alike. And an indispensable reference when traveling and sightseeing around Flagstaff, Arizona.
Most people don't realize that Flagstaff is situated near these barely dormant volcanoes which last erupted less than 800 years ago! Highly recommended!

Book Description
It's absolutely disgusting being fourteen. You've got no rights whatsoever. Your parents get to make all the decisions: Who gets the single bedroom. How much allowance is enough. What time you must come in. Who is a proper friend. What your report card is supposed to look like. And what your parents don't tell you to do, the school does. None of this seems fair to Lauren Allen, but then she finds a way to fight back. She can even sue her parents for malpractice...can't she? "Entangled in a web of family friction, adolescent uncertainty, and romantic longing, Lauren slowly learns to make decisions that are right for her....Humor abounds, nicely balancing the reality." -- Children's Book Review Service "Ruefully and relentlessly funny." -- The New Yorker Paula Danziger lives in New York City and Bearsville, New York. "This novel is as much fun as Danziger's The Cat Ate My Gymsuit." -- School Library Journal
Customer Reviews:
Have YOU ever been 14?.......2007-04-01
If you have, you'l understand exactley how Lauren feels.
Her parents make all the choices.
Her sister Milissa is all that makes it bearable.
But when she moves out, the only light on Lauren's harizon is Zack, a boy that is in eghieth grade. Great! A year younger then Lauren. Now every ones out to tease her. Could it get any worse? YES. Now her old boyfriend, Bobby wants her back. She could clear up all her school problems, and still have a
boyfriend, or stay with Zack, the perfect guy. How and Who will she choose?
A fun YA read..........2006-11-30
Fourteen-year-old Lauren is always feeling neglected by her family; her little sister's annoying, her big sister never has time for her anymore, and her father's angry and controlling. So when she learns she's been accepted into a Young People's Law elective class at school, Lauren is thrilled. Maybe she'll finally be able to take control of her life!
But just when she thinks she's about to get a grip, Lauren's life turns even more topsy-turvy. She's met Zack, an eighth-grader from California, and instantly fallen in love. No one at school can understand how Lauren might find Zack a fun, caring guy to be around...all they see is a girl going out with a boy a grade lower than her, which seems like a huge gap in junior high.
Meanwhile on the homefront, Lauren's college-aged sister Melissa announces some big news that threatens to change their family dynamic even further...
This book isn't the best ever - or even Danziger's best - but it's fun and interesting nonetheless.
Can you sue your parents for malpractice?.......2006-06-08
A catchy title, that's why I started reading it. The book is okay. Not the best book I've ever read, but not bad either. I think teenagers can really identify with the main character Lauren. She describes her life, her family life, her problems, etc. There are funny parts, but it's also sad sometimes. It's a good book for a teacher to read in class with pupils. There are many items you can talk about, like what happened to Lauren re. sex. Her boyfriend broke up with her because she didn't want to go all the way with him. Or about her family life; her parents quarrel a lot. Her father is very old-fashioned. Teenagers have to deal with these issues. What do they feel, or think and do? So, even when I think it's not the best book, I still think it's worth reading it.
Funny+Sad=Moving Story.......2006-01-11
Her dad's impossible. Her boyfriend quits her for someone more sexy. Her little sister is a messy roomate. And she has romantic longings for an eighth-grade boy. BUT she's in the NINTH grade. That's a no-no, a never! Teenage readers will understand Lauren's problems--both the wacky ones and the serious. This is a funny and sometimes sad and moving story.
Can You Sue Your Parnets for Malpractice?.......2005-12-03
This book is about a 14 year old girl named Lauren and it seems like her life is falling apart. Her older sister Melissa was kicked out and now she's living with her boyfriend. Her littler sister annoys her with her jokes. Lauren's parnets fight all the time and Lauren going out with a younger guy. Everyone's teasing her because her boyfriend's in 8th grade in 9th. What I really liked about the book is the girl Lauren really likes the boy and doesn't care what other people think of him. She likes him for who he is.
