Too bad the essence of Rome can't be bottled and exported to a corner store near you. If it could, you could pick up a weekend's worth of Rome along with your pint of milk and Snickers bar, and you'd probably never get to repainting the stairs, doing the laundry, or watching that new video release. Instead you'd be gawking at St. Peter's, ogling the Temple of Vesta, devouring saltimbocca in a trattoria, and sipping Sangiovese at a wine bar. You might not even get to the Snickers bar. Okay, DK never said they're trying to bottle Rome. But they do a stand-up job of imbuing their guidebook with the spirit, attitude, and élan of Rome. They don't just provide information about where to stay and what to do when you're there (though they do, in fact, provide all those necessary details), they go beyond the pragmatic and mundane to revel in Rome's glory. They stimulate the appetite for a Roman holiday. The gorgeous pictures and engaging text draw you in. They inspire you to read and dream, set your travel date, and visit Rome for real. --Stephanie Gold

Eyewitness Top 10 Guides Are the Best!.......2007-09-27
If you are traveling to a city and spending only a short time (3 or less days) you need nothing more than an Eyewitness Top 10 Guide. I will never go anywhere without one. It categorizes and boils things down, but the print is large enough to read. If you will be spending longer in your destination (for instance you are studying abroad) you will want a more comprehensive guide. Don't hesitate to buy any of the Eyewitness Top 10 Guides -- I have 3 of them.

the top 10 guides are the greatest books for traveling. they give the top 10 of everything you would like to know-sights, resturants, hotels. we traveled through europe and book several different types of books and the top 10 were our favorites! some of the info is a little off like the hours of the collsium and the prices of somethings so i would confirm
The Gold Standard for Travel Guides.......2007-07-30
Lavishly illustrated and easy to follow. Presents a logical division of the city and groups attractions accordingly. Information is accurate and up-to-date. Clearly it's a popular guidebook, as evidenced by the number of Americans visibly carrying it in the city. Pair it with Frommer's Italy and you're covered.
Gave great advice.......2007-07-23
This little book was our bible on a recent trip to Rome. I will always be grateful that DK included San Clemente in their top 10. This amazing little church is like a layer cake of fascinating things to see. The street level is a lovely 12th century church with beautiful floors, columns, and frescoes. Underneath is an excavated 4th century church that includes a frescoe with the first sentence ever written in Italian: "Fili de le pute traite", or "Pull, you sons of whores!" I kid you not. This level also includes the tomb of Saint Cyril, creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a wonderful tombstone with a pagan inscription on one side, and on the other, an early Christian inscription -- it was recycled! They have it set up so you can flip it over to see both sides. Finally, the bottom level has ancient ruins, including a Mithraic (pagan) shrine.
The only time the book let us down was its recommendation of Da Augusto, a restaurant in Trastevere. This was their #1 listing under "Cheap Eats" for Trastevere but it was the only unappetizing food we were served in our whole trip.

Somewhat Tacky, do not confuse it with the Eyewitness top 10.......2005-03-02
do not confuse it with the Eyewitness top 10 travel guide for Rome, which is a much better book, has way better maps and is cheaper, in color, with better paper.... this one is like something you'd pick for free at a train station and 80% of the information in it is totally useless for a tourist. I ordered it by mistake and have no use for it.
Rome at your fingertips!.......2001-08-28
Congratulations to Whiting for writing a comprehensive guide to Rome that is compact, easy to read, and shares all her vast knowledge of the city. Since I visit Rome on occasion I grabbed a copy of this guide as soon as it hit the market, and I haven't been disappointed. Whiting has touched on virtually every facet associated with the eternal city and has used a format that is easy to follow and acquaints even the novice with the most important information. What a treasure of a guide, and I highly recommend it not only to the novice, but to the seasoned traveler as well. Whiting has hit all the highlights....and more!
both accessible and detailed.......2001-07-31
Having been to Rome prior to picking up this book, I wasn't certain as to how much its Top 10 lists would help me on my return trip to Italy. I must say I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that not only did the book refresh my memory as to some of the most beautiful and fascinating places in the city, but more importantly it took me into the heart of Rome--really covering locations & details that in my mind bridge the first-time visitor with someone who has been several times. It is quite evident that Whiting not only knows Rome, but knows what it's like to want to discover the city the right way: armed with informed lists and suggestions that still leave plenty of room for the actual discovery itself!

Not So Thrilling.......2007-09-17
Reading this book was painful for me. This is coming from a reader of the English version. The idea of this story could have been good, a chase to save a forbidden treasure from a greedy man with a lot of wealth, but I did not find it at all interesting.
I can understand why this author is well liked, some parts of the book were well thought out and described. The problem was that the main story was not well planned out. All of the story fit together awkwardly and made it uninteresting to read.
Mystery and fantasy are not a category that I believe should be written by this author. The magic in this story seemed to far-fetched and too all-powerful to make it fun. Although some may have been interested to find out who the villain was, I thought that it was painstakingly obvious from the moment the character appeared. If you never have read a good mystery novel in your life, you may be fooled.
I have read books that were translated into English before and I understand that some of the creativity may have been lost. I think one star is appropriate for the book since I do not understand how the amount of creativity this story lacks could have been lost in translation. If the story is lost in the translation, I feel that is should not have been translated in the first place.
Himalayan Fantasy.......2007-08-14
Only after I finished this book did I realize it was for young adults! (My reaction before I found out was that Allende had gone seriously downhill.) But from the young adult perspective, it's not a bad read. The second of three mystery/travel/adventure books by Allende, written for her grandchildren, this is an entertaining tale set in a thinly disguised Bhutan. An irascible, mid-60's-ish travel writer named Kate Gold invites her grandson and his friend Nadia from South America to join her on a trip to the Himalayan Kingdom of the Golden Dragon. There they meet up with the King and his heir, a seven-foot tall monk trained in the martial arts, the secret Sect of the Scorpion, a plot to steal the Kingdom's most valuable treasure, etc. No sex, not much violence, and lots of traditional values. Probably good for the 12-13 year old set, but, unlike Harry Potter, definitely not for grownups.
A Good Read.......2007-02-13
Kingdom of the Golden Dragon by Isabel Allende is very interesting. The plot had many twists and turns that really spice it up. How the plot weaves together and who the bad guy really is was awesome! How the Golden Dragon really works is brilliant! All of the settings, from India, to The Kingdom of the Golden Dragon was interesting. The author portrays the love and compassion of the Nepalese people that they show for each other. She also shows how they can be cruelly exploited. This among the best children's books I have ever read. By JJ
Allende Trilogy.......2007-02-10
I loved this book on tape and its two companion stories. I've always been a fan of Isabel Allende and listened to Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia in the car. Then Id purchased Kingdom of the Golden Dragon and the the two other books in this series on tape. I really enjoyed them although they are very different from Allende's other books. I imagine that a 10-13 year old child would really enjoy these books and have set them aside to give as a gift to a special young person in the future. Despite the more simple story line I loved the tapes and couldn't wait to get back in the car to listen. Books-on-tape are, I think, the complete answer to road rage. When I'm listening to something good I don't care how long it takes to get where I'm going.
An Excellent Suspense Book With Multiple Great Twists.......2006-09-06
This book was extremely creative. I greatly suggest you read the first book in the series before reading this one, just to help with lots of connections Isabel make between this book and City of the Beasts. Isabel added twist after twist to the story making you want to read more and more. Every night you could see the light on in my room since I could not keep my eyes of the book. Suspense fills the book so high that you fell as if you have to read more and more just to find out what will come with a flip of the page.
The story is about Alexander and Nadia, two spontaneous teens, going to the Himalayas with Alex's grandmother, who writes for the National Geographic Magazine. After meeting and having an adventure in the Amazon (City of the Beasts), Alex and Nadia have another adventure together with some new characters.
Each character has their own distinct personality, which you get to know better and better through out the book. For example, Alex is a bit of an outcast who has really mixed emotions. He rock climbs, which helps him multiple times throughout the story. Nadia is always very calm, can think things through and is very spiritual. She has two very special talents that help her through all their encounters. She has the ability to turn invisible and to talk to animals. One other interesting thing about these two teens is that they have totemic animals, Jaguar and Eagle. Together they make a great team.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good book that is educational, fictional, adventurous, magical and suspenseful all in one.

Book Description
Just in case my Spanish is as terrible as I suspect it is! Once again the teenage hero from "The City of the Beasts", Alexander Cold, his grandmother Kate and his Brazilian friend Nadia Santos, go on an expedition to a remote country, unsullied by the modern world. However, a greedy capitalist is out to steal the golden dragon, a priceless artefact which the inhabitants believe protects their country by making prophecies. Will they be able to save the dragon, and thereby save the kingdom?
I'm afraid I found this book as predictable as its predecessor - it really consists of a set of borrowed themes and locations mixed together, with little to surprise the reader. For a lost city in the jungle, we now have a remote kingdom in the Himalayas; for the jungle beasts, we now have yetis, as so on. I know this book was aimed at teenagers, but that doesn't excuse its faults. I've made a bad start with Allende. I think I'll try her other works and give her the benefit of the doubt.
