The Jaws of Death was an amazing book. For all the techincal information on the animal's biology, I found it to be an easy read. Although, I'm probably bias, because I've always found sharks to be interesting.
Maniguet gives countless examples of shark attacks, and then explains why the shark might have attacked. It's a nice insight into their thinking. Numerous diagrams of the shark's anatomy help with explaining the complex sensory organs. They are absoluting incredible!
This is a great book for anyone who is really intrigued by these beautiful animals. Even if you don't find them to be the most amazing creatures, you will after flipping through this book.

Maniguet covers just about every aspect of sharks, and from a perspective of human contact. One long chapter covers shark attacks on humans, while the rest of the book covers anatomy, behaviour, and human interface, with some attacks interspersed. The book is technical in parts, but not too much so. I was looking for a factual book on sharks and shark attacks, not sensational but not boring, and this was perfect.
A Must Read.......2001-07-23
This book is one of the best I've been able to find on sharks, and I could not put it down! I must have read it over three times already just to remember all the information it contains!
It has detailed pictures and information on shark anatomy, favored myths about sharks, factual accounts of shark attacks, some information on other animals such as crocs and killer whales, and xavier puts forth several facts and theories about shark behavior. In the back it also contains an encyclopedia of sharks.
This is not a book for those with weak stomachs, since the pictures are very graphic of those attacked by sharks, even though most of which were only 'investigative bites'(and people get struck by lightning more often than attacked by sharks).
Since it was originally copyrighten in 1991, there are one or two new shark facts that are missing in this book(as opposed to the many facts that are usually missing in other shark books), but this is still the best for its time, and one of the best informative books for the present.
I would suggest this book for anyone deeply interested in sharks. It answers alot of questions and asks many other thought-provoking ones, keeping the reader hooked from cover to cover.
The jaws which held the readers captive........2001-06-21
Although known as the swimming death of the seas Xavier Maniguet ties to explain the truth about sharks. He also tries to close a gap between this perfect fitted animal and its status of a killer-machine. Especially by facing the reader with some horrifying photographs of human shark-attack victims. But the book also shows in a scientific and breathtaking way the other strange side of these misunderstood animals and let sharks not look like a man-eating machine but also as an important member in our ecosystem. For those who are really interested in sharks this paper is a MUST! And for me who faced a real Great White once in South Africa it is even more than that.
Horrible book-perpetuates myth of shark as "evil fish".......2001-06-19
I can't believe this book was even published. Of course, I shouldn't be surprised since a lot of people who saw "Jaws" and eat shark fin soup are willing to believe that sharks are an evil fish, a "killing machine" just waiting to eat helpless swimmers. What a crock....for all of the research that real scientists have done on sharks, this book pretty much erases all of the work that they have done to show what sharks really are...the top of the food chain. NO, sharks to not EAT people. They mistake them for seals, sea lions, turtles. Let us not forget that WE are in THEIR ocean...not the other way around. Respect the animal and it will respect you!

How to face death without fear........2007-04-24
At the age of eighty-six in the last two weeks of his life the author wrote his, his last book. A book that takes his years of thought and prayer and puts down on papers how we confront the prospect of our own death.
There is no question that he had an acceptance of his impending death. His reverent insight into the fear of death we must all face and of God's judgment is well written. As is his writing as he pulls back the dark veil of death for us. And reminds us that only through the darkness of death may we enter the light of eternal life. An eternal life offered by our faith in God, in the resurrection of the body, and in reunion through Christ with our beloved dead.
I decided to read this book now that I have reached the point the doctors have decided it is best I just go home and be as comfortable as possible. Reading this book both frightened me and brought me joy. Since we are all mortal, I do suggest you read this book. Get through the first half, the second half makes it all worthwhile. For you cannot have light without darkness.
written in 2 weeks/ a masterpiece.......2004-06-20
this book is a deep and moving book of a truly brilliant mans extensive study of Christian and non Christian writings on DEATH. This is a simple readable book illuminated with a profound love of Jesus and inspiring hope. Before his death in a two week period this work was done; death is something none of us will ever avoid and this work has some great teachings and insight. I can not say I loved reading this book , but I am a better person for having read it, and sometimes great words are not the easiest to read but maybe the most worthwhile.

Description:
A new type of rhizotron is described that facilitates the study of root growth of inundated wetland plants. This rhizotron provides: (1) non-destructive root morphometric measurements during an experiment, (2) rhizotron-specific independent experimental units, (3) a water level of up to 45cm above the soil surface, (4) easy access for planting, and (5) the ability to harvest at multiple soil depths. A removable back allows easy access for planting and harvesting at multiple soil depths. A gasket ensures a watertight seal. Detailed methods of construction allow researchers to construct and use similar rhizotrons for experimental research. Advantages and disadvantages of the new rhizotron type are discussed. Using the new rhizotron construction, growth response of the Cyperaceae species Eleocharis cellulosa and Rhynchospora tracyi from the Florida Everglades under different water levels and phosphate availabilities were investigated. Destructive and non-destructive analysis of development of above- and belowground biomass for the two species demonstrates that the two species differ in their response to alterations in water level, but show similarities in their response to phosphorus availability. While E. cellulosa showed larger increases in root density, root biomass, total shoot length, and shoot biomass with rising water level, the opposite was the case in R. tracyi. Both species produced more aboveground biomass with increasing phosphorus availability. Only E. cellulosa showed an increase in root density and a root biomass increase with high phosphorus availability. In R. tracyi, there was no significant increase in root biomass and root density with high phosphorus availability.

Extremely useful cruising guide.......2003-11-06
Nigel's guide is THE cruising guide for Cuba. It provides very detailed instructions for entering all minor and major anchorages, harbors, cities, etc. We used it on our two month westbound cruise of the north coast this year, and found it invaluable.
The only complaint I have is that he hasn't updated it in many years. Things change constantly, in terms of check in procedures, and where you can or cannot anchor, etc. Otherwise, a fantastic guide!

The best book on Cuba by land or by sea........1999-09-26
The "Cruising Guide To Cuba" covers in great detail in a first person narrative the entire coast and all of the coastal cities, ports, and harbors, i.e., about ninety percent of what is worth seeing in Cuba. Written as a first person memoir, the book is extremely readable as a novel, with local customs and situations described extensively to place the reader in Cuba, at the docks, talking with the friendly Customs guards and mechanics. Having been to Havana many times, I find the character of the country better captured in this book than in any travel guide or any other book about Cuba, including "Our Man in Havana". With humor, fairness, and keen insight into the truly comfortable Latin American way of doing things such as living intelligently with spontaneity and vitality, Charles goes farther than anyone to rectify the embedded Yanqui mistrust of Cuba by describing actual experiences which let the reader know that the embargo against that counrty has resulted in a great loss to our people: knowledge and understanding of one of the most beautiful places, and most enlivening cultures on earth. This seems to be one of those classics like "Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" which some readers will dismiss as too narrow for their general interests. This book is as much about boats and cruising as that classic was about machinery: it is in there, but there is a wonderful, on-going essay about cultures, philosophy, and, without asking it directly, the one big question: who has lost the most in the ridiculous campaign of hatred against this proud, historically magnificent country, us or them? There are other cruising guides to Cuba which are dry and obviously format and budget driven. There are similar travel guides by the usual publishers for inland excursions. "The Cruising Guide To Cuba" stands out because it is obviously a labor of love, written by a man and his mate who have spent years in research and preparation; some seven months alone for the second edition just to circumnavigate the island one more time. Other authors write of Cuba as they would any other assignment, with predictable and often useful factual results, as if they are writing about a beautiful actress they saw on stage and later interviewed. This book goes far beyond the quick glance infatuation, as if the author went to the beautiful woman's house and lived with her intimately and came away with enduring respect and admiration. A sage exile architect I know listened to my account of feeling miserable for not having been to Havana in over a year. "Yes," he said, "it started as lust, but then it turned to sincere love, and you cannot forget her, can you? None of us can." Forget the leg shows and cigars; Cuba without those pop buzz topics is a direct shock to the heart, it will leave you wondering why we remain so poorly informed about one of the most relaxing and desirable places on earth. Charles' book brings that message across, with respect and admiration for what is actually there and what it is like to be there. In the same way that "The Old Man and The Sea" was not necessarily about fishing, this cruising guide is not necessarily just about boats and charts, although as just that, it is worth the price.

I loved this book. Like seriously. It was addicting. Just as its prior book, this one was just as cute and witty and crazy. Can't wait for the second one!
AWESOME SEQUEL.......2005-11-30
If you like Gossip Girl or Sisterhood of the Pants or any of those kinds of books, this will be your favorite of them all!! As soon as you start to read it, you can't put it down - Love is at boarding school and dealing with fun issues like boys and her music and more serious stuff, like her Aunt's health. but i won't give away any more. I just can't wait for the next one - Love from London!!!
A wonderful sequel........2005-11-01
This is the second book in the series by Emily Franklin. The first book was The Principles of Love. I recommend reading the first book before reading this one.
Anyways, this book starts out after the summer happened so there's about 3 months of time we don't get to read about in detail. We get a summary of what happened before Love left for her internship for the summer. I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait until the third book comes out in march 2006.
