Book Description

Hundreds of hardy people have tried to carve a living in the Alaskan bush, but few have succeeded as consistently as Heimo Korth. Originally from Wisconsin, Heimo traveled to the Arctic wilderness in his feverous twenties. Now, more than three decades later, Heimo lives with his wife and two daughters approximately 200 miles from civilization -- a sustainable, nomadic life bounded by the migrating caribou, the dangers of swollen rivers, and by the very exigencies of daily existence.

In The Final Frontiersman, Heimo's cousin James Campbell chronicles the Korth family's amazing experience, their adventures, and the tragedy that continues to shape their lives. With a deft voice and in spectacular, at times unimaginable detail, Campbell invites us into Heimo's heartland and home. The Korths wait patiently for a small plane to deliver their provisions, listen to distant chatter on the radio, and go sledding at 44° below zero -- all the while cultivating their hard-learned survival skills that stand between them and a terrible fate.

Awe-inspiring and memorable, The Final Frontiersman reads like a rustic version of the American Dream and reveals for the first time a life undreamed by most of us: amid encroaching environmental pressures, apart from the herd, and alone in a stunning wilderness that for now, at least, remains the final frontier.

5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2007-06-09

If you love adventure. If you love Alaska. Then you will love this book. A story that has it all. What an amazing family. I feel like I know them. A great story of sacrifice and adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a story . . ........2007-02-28

Campbell's style of intermixing different time frames is most enjoyable, and kept reminding me that this wasn't just a tale, but about real people. It holds interest like the tales of the other frontiers people that we all know and love, but with much more reality - perhaps because it contains so very many of the human attributes - frustration, love, beauty, solace, tragedy, hardship, all interspersed with some extreme 'highs' that tend to remind us (me) how much our choices bring those same things, in greater or lesser degrees.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story!.......2006-05-16

The Final Frontiersman is a fascinating story of one man's personal journey from a difficult background in Wisconsin to the freedom and challenges of life in the most remote region in the U.S. The man, Heimo Korth, unexpectedly finds romance and a life partner - and establishes a close knit family while living outside the margins of what some call "civil society." A clear and wonderfully told story which unapologetically describes how Heimo and his native spouse, Edna, live a subsistence lifestyle - primarily on freshly killed, free-ranging caribou and moose. It also describes how swiftly tragedy can strike.

Beyond the surface, Frontiersman raises an interesting question about whether living a subsistence lifestyle - normally associated with destruction of wildife - is "bad" in the overall context of the ecological health of wildlife on the planet. This book caused me to reflect on the impact we urbanites have on wildlife as compared to the Korths: from bushmeat trade, to feed lots, to marine destruction caused by the use of fossil fuels. And yes - packaged meat is dead too.

It is an excellent read for anyone who wishes to understand how difficult, rewarding, and tragic frontier life can be - and how it can forge human relationships.

5 out of 5 stars To the Korths.......2006-04-17

I just finished reading "The Final Frontiersman" and would recommend it to anyone. It's well-written, entertaining, and truly educational, not only about the hardships and joys of life in the Arctic bush but about the politics of Alaskan wilderness "preservation."

To the Korths: I admire your courage, sheer physical stamina, know-how, and determination to live life on your own terms. Would you be willing to provide an eiplogue to the book -- let your fans know how you're doing in town (Fairbanks or Center?), how the girls are doing in school and their path to adulthood, what Heimo is doing instead of trapping, how's Firth, etc. I am really rooting for your successful transition to town life and wish you the very best.

To Krin [assuming that the real Krin Korth wrote the last review about the bleeding hearts who are bothered by the concept of animal trapping]: Please don't take people's comments as a personal attack on you and your family, although I'm sure it's hard not to. People can be embarrassingly quick to rush in and judge things they know nothing about. You have lived more in your 17 or so years on this earth than people like that manage to live in 80. Be proud of all you learned in the bush from your amazing parents, because you'll carry that knowledge with you always.

5 out of 5 stars Final Frontiersman.......2006-04-05

Most people do not understand what it is like to live in the bush, they are city people who just stay indoors most of their lives, they believe that people should not hunt or kill animals for their fur or for their meat, they read a book but dont like it becuase someone killed an animal in it, boo hoo. They are simpleminded people who dont know any better, natives and residents in Alaska do this everyday, and it most likely will no be changed for a long time, since they grew up around such things and live to do it every day. This book shows what it is really like in the Alaskan bush and if you dont like it, does it look like we care?

Book Description

"The wardens climbed into their truck, ready to leave. 'You'll need about seven cords of firewood. Concentrate on that. You'll have to get it all in before the snow grounds your truck.'""Though I didn't want to ask, it seemed important. 'What's a cord?'"So begins Pete Fromm's seven winter months alone in a tent in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness guarding salmon eggs. After blundering into this forbidding errand as a college lark, Fromm gradually come face to face with the blunt realities of life as a contemporary mountain man. Brutal cold, isolation, and fearful risks balance against the satisfaction of living a unique existence in modern America. This award-winning narrative is a gripping story of adventure, a rousing tale of self-sufficiency, and modern-day Walden. From either perspective, Fromm lives up to his reputation as one of the West's strongest new voices.

5 out of 5 stars A great adventure painted vividly & honestly..................2007-08-29

Started this absorbing adventure when I arrived home from my work day (in the office) & finished 3 hours later. What a thrilling few hours it was too!.

The story starts as a young, immature college guy rather niavely (& foolishly) takes on a 7 month job in the wilds with no experience, knowledge, or realistic idea of how he will cope out of his comfort zone & what it takes to survive on his own during the harsh winter weather living in a tent.

It's surprisingly honest & revealing - most adventurers only recount the highlights & thrills (without exposing their fears & weaknesses).

Pete Fromm writes vividly & from the heart - it takes a courageous man to expose his inner thoughts & anxieties to his readers.

I found some of his descriptions of hunting/killing the wildlife a little graphic (so vegetarians beware), but towards the end of the book his growing maturity & awareness of nature & the lives of creatures in the wild, give me reason to believe he learnt to love & respect the wildlife (even if he still needed to hunt & trap to survive).

By the end of the book, his words come across as skillful as any seasoned writer & it was not surprising that he now has several books published.

I hope all who read this book enjoy it as much as I did....................

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff!!!.......2007-06-03

What outdoorsman has not dreamed of walking into the woods and living off the land? Fromm does a nice job in explaining what needs to be done to make my dream a reality...he also does a GREAT job in detailing the fact that I belong at home (in the city).

This was a great book..... read it over a trip to Hawaii....

If you are into camping or wilderness this is a great read... A great Escape!

5 out of 5 stars One of my personal favorites of this genre.......2007-01-23

I truly loved this book on many levels, from the hunting and fishing experiences the author shared to his personal reflections on several moral issues, which I felt were very poignant and truthful.

The majority of this book covers the author's seven-month stay in a canvas tent, deep in the Idaho wilderness during the months of October through May. His job was to watch over and protect millions of salmon eggs that had been cached in the gravel of a nearby river.

His love of mountain man books and the thrill of experiencing nature in all of its variety are ideals that initially lead him to volunteer for the long winter assignment. Later, his enthusiasm changes to loneliness and regret as he faces his separation from his friends and family.

On the surface, his tale recounts his meetings with hunters, guides, outfitters, forest rangers, wardens, and outdoors enthusiasts as they pass by his lonely tent in his remote meadow. He speaks of the extreme winter weather he faced, the wildlife he encountered, and the steps he took to survive in an isolated and severe environment.

The real beauty of this book, however, comes when the author shares how painful moments of loneliness affected him and ultimately how these experiences changed him into a person who became very secure with his own creative abilities and very comfortable with his own company.

He records some very personal reflections regarding what it meant to him to shoot various animals for meat during his long winter stay. As he accompanies various guides and hunters on their hunting trips, he recounts how he felt when others did not view their kills as the resources he believed they were.

The author writes of loss, of waste, of fully utilizing one's resources, of missing one's family and friends and how dear trusted loved ones are to a soul, and of the gloriousness of wildlife and wilderness. He revels in the beauties that surround him and comes to truly appreciate his experience alone for several months in the mountains.

My words cannot do justice to the lessons I watched him learn and to the maturing and self-discovery he experienced. I also cannot do honor to the beautiful way he describes nature, its wildlife, and the incredible beauty to be found in truly wild places. Thus, you should experience this book for yourself if you love these types of things.

5 out of 5 stars "Indian Creek Chronicles".......2007-01-19

Refreshing and engaging first-person account of coming-of-age from a wise young man alone in the wilderness. I've found it personally inspiring as a, well, middle-aged woman, and continue to pass along copies to young people I know -- not because it's preachy or anything (it's not), but Fromm is the sort of buddy a mom would be happy to see her college kid bring home for a weekend: self-reliant, reflective, modest, polite, resourceful, and a good sport. Don't worry: It's a Man's Man's book (my manly husband likes it and recommends it, too). That Fromm happens to be a naturally good writer, too, is a plus. It's gotten awards, so you don't have to take my word on that.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing story, don't miss it........2005-04-23

I read this book when it was first published and I have carried it around in my head ever since. My copy has "gone missing" and now intend to repurchase and read it again. I will always recall Anne's adventures warmly. Her statement about using the wind as a dryer has stuck with me. She is a remarkble woman.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating!.......2005-04-22

Her first - WOODSWOMAN - just captivated me from the first page to the last. Then, every other book in the series - WOODSWOMAN II, WOODSWOMAN III - was like watching a movie. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next. WOODSWOMAN IV is the most exciting yet - her walk across Black Bear Lake in February through three inches of ice water over one foot of snow is riveting. The chapters about her German shepherd, Chekika, who was quadriplegic for two years, show the deep love the author has for her dogs. When James Herriot published his books, I didn't think anyone could come close to his writing. But, Anne has. I love her books as much as his!

WOODSWOMAN IV - Book Four of the Woodswoman's Adventures.
Anne LaBastille ISBN 0-9632846-3-0

Strong and independent, Anne LaBastille has chosen to live very simply as an ecologist and an Adirondack wilderness guide. She loves the solitude of the mountain lakes and woodlands. Fortunately for us she shares her vision once again in this fourth book of the WOODSWOMAN series. She seeks solitude and revels in everyday miracles of nature. She lives a contemplative, traditional life in an increasingly technological world. In this book she shares vignettes of life in her log cabin next to the Adirondack wilderness; a frugal, yankee approach to publishing; a "Deliverance-like" adventure in Appalachia and much more. Her style is conversational and easy. Delve into a chapter and into the book's 50 photos and you are there, alongside her. It is a fast and delightful read.
I really didn't want this book to end.

5 out of 5 stars A sensitive, intelligent, and compelling book.......2003-10-02

I have to admit up front: I'm an Anne LaBastille fan. Ever since I read her gripping book, Woodswoman, I've been hooked. As an avid conservationist and author, I've even had the privelege of meeting her and having dinner with her at her cabin on her beloved Black Bear Lake. Sitting around a crackling fire, drinking wine, we talked about book publishing, writing, and the acid rain that has devastated lakes like hers in the northeastern United States.

This book, while tamer than Woodswoman is a sensitive, intelligent, and compelling tale of five years in Anne's life in the Adirondacks. Those who, like me, read her books will be rewarded many times over. Those who haven't yet had the opportunity to explore her world will likely find this book a delight. No matter what the topic -- her self-publishing ventures, a hummingbird that landed on her hand to seek refuge from an overzealous suitor, the death of her beloved dog Chekika or her wild adventures in America's South -- Anne's skilled story telling will keep you entranced. You'll smile, you'll laugh, you'll shiver in fear, and you'll cry as you read this wonderful book. You'll no doubt want to go back to the beginning to pick up a copy of Woodswoman.

5 out of 5 stars Enthralling!.......2003-06-21

Anne LaBastille has penned another riveting read recounting her adventures as an independent woman residing in the wilderness and as a wildlife biologist striving to protect the natural world. She shares her forays in the complex world of self-publishing which adds a new dimension to this already accomplished visionary. Quite frankly, LaBastille is my favorite writer - her life is fascinating and I marvel at her commitment and ability to convey the emotional pain of losing her beloved pet-companions. Her talented writing style allows the reader to experience the fear of death she faced when confronted by out-of-control, gun-wielding thugs while camping in a public wilderness park. WOODSWOMAN IV is a page-turner that chronicles the changes in "Woodswoman's" life - and society.

5 out of 5 stars Canoe Trip a very well written book........2004-09-28

Overall the Book Canoe Trip was a very well written detailed book. The book was about David Curran's solo canoeing trip through the back woods of maine. Dr. Curran wrote with great detail in this book. He tells you about great adventures through maine. Many people think he's taking to big of a risk going alone to Maine by himself, yet he proceeds with the trip every year anyway. He even ties in a little bit of humor through out the many interesting events in the story. I recomend this book for anyone who likes a good adventure in the woods, or anyone who likes to get away from civilization, then you'll find many things in common with Dr. Curran and enjoy the book very much so.

4 out of 5 stars Cane Trip: Good Read.......2004-09-28

The book Canoe Trip by Dave Curran is an adventure book about his trips to the Maine wilderness. He is a psychologist in Massachusetts and loves to take canoes into deep, isolated rivers in northwest Maine. The book gives a very good description about how rugged and wild the woods pf Maine, just about 100 miles north of Boston, can be. It shows how different the woods of Maine are compared to the woods that people are used in more populated states like Massachusetts, and people might be surprised how rugged and wild Maine can be.

The book is more descriptive than exciting, but there are many moments of adventure to enjoy and keep you reading. There isn't a real plot of the book because Curran talks about his many adventures in Maine, and is mainly for people who are fond of the outdoors. There are many close escapes from danger, and the accurate description of the Maine wildlife and deep, dark woods of Maine, is why people should try reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-09-28

This book is great for the type of reader who likes to heat first hand, some stories about traveling through Maine on a Canoo. You'll here about some of the wildlife in Maine (and what will happen when you intimidate them.) You'll even hear about what kind of weather might come your way while you're out in the woods. This story will explain how an inexperienced person will be forced to become experienced through trial and error; because of going through some of the harsh realities of Maine's outdoors.

4 out of 5 stars Canoe Trip.......2003-09-30

The book, Canoe Trip, by David Curren, is a book about one man's quest to brave the wilderness. This is an awesome book for those of you who love the outdoors. if you are one who has been on solo missions or even adventures with your friends and want to gain more info on survival, than pickup a copy of this book. Mr. Curren, who works in a public school, is the type of guy, nobdy would expect to travel to Maine and brave the whitewater rapids of a river.

For those of you who dream of making a name for yourself, but don't quite know what to do, read an adventure book such as this and get inspired. Moose, cold, and an unforgiving river, could not stop this man Don't let skeptisizm stop you. If adventure and excitement are what you're into, read this book, reject fear as he did. It is an excellent piece. For those of you who have read it, you know what I mean.

4 out of 5 stars canoe Trip review.......2003-09-30

Canoe Trip by David Curran is an interesting feat of adventure discovered in the Maine wilderness. A one man adventure that is full of surprises along the way. The book shows real life problems that would occur during a canoe trip in the Maine wilderness. These problems would occur only once in a life time, but for this adventurer these problems are common every day problems.

This is an amazing book and would recommend it to anybody who likes adventure stories. The text is so detailed it felt like you were on the trip
yourself. This book will give you the most detailed story of life in the maine wilderness.

Book Description

High school student Flint Red Coyote is challenged by his classmates to spend three fall/winter months completely alone in the Beartooth Wilderness Area. Flint carefully plans and prepares for the dangers he might face with the guidance of his elders. He survives a blizzard, a grizzly bear stealing his food supply, and exhaustion from hunger.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Easy read, Interesting info.......2006-11-06

"Alone in the Wilderness" contains a lot of interesting information regarding Cheyenne traditions and traditional Cheyenne beliefs. It is also fun to follow Flint's trials as he tackles the challenge of surviving the Beartooth Mts in autumn.

One part of the book I found unbelievable was the dialogue between the teenagers. It seemed unrealistic that teens would talk so often with such a philisophical outlook--even if some teens think that way, they don't talk that way.

Over all, though, I enjoyed this book and found it a very easy read. I would recommend this book to others.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasurable to read, and always offers a positive take.......2002-02-11

Alone In The Wilderness is a coming-of-age story with an indigenous focus. Told from the viewpoint of Flint Red Coyote, a teenaged Cheyenne high school student who faces racism from dominant culture peers, Alone in the Wilderness recounts one young man's way of finding the best in himself while discovering through experience a rich and varied heritage of survival skills. Challenged by unfriendly white students to live as his ancestors have, young Flint uses all his resources to plan for the danger of spending three fall-into-winter months alone in the Beartooth Wilderness Area of Montana. Together with his dog O'kohome, Flint faces a blizzard, hunger, exhaustion, and the theft of his food supply by a bigger mammal (grizzly bear). In the end he helps to rescue a friend and finds what he did not know he was looking for, self respect, and a way to appreciate and use his own unique spiritual and physical gifts.

Written by Hap Gilliland, a professor in Native American Education at Montana State University, Alone In The Wilderness has many details of Native American practices and tools that enrich the story. The book is pleasurable to read, and always offers a positive take on the problems encountered. It should appeal to young people of multiple and varied ethnic origins.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-09-07

Sandra Brown has written another great love story. Rich, beautiful and wonderfully ambitious Rusty Carlson and ruggedly handsome Vietname Vet Cooper Landry are the only survivors of a horrific plane crash. Determined to survive, they forge a mutually beneficial relationship that turns to love. There is everything that makes this a terrific read....romance, passion, and a good story. Read it, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Geat Book.......2007-08-05

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint me. Her plots and characters are very detailed. It is a must Read!

5 out of 5 stars Suspense, romance and a happy ending!.......2007-07-18

I enjoyed this Sandra Brown book because of the suspense of a plane crash and how they survived. I enjoy a nice love story that's not too complicated and that ends well.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story.......2007-07-17

My friend gave me this book to read since she knew I had read several of Sandra Brown's novels and I'm happy to report that I was not disappointed in one of my favorite authors. I won't elaborate on the story as there are excellent reviews of "Two Alone" that have already been posted except to add that SB created top-notched characters in Rusty Carlson and Cooper Landry. I just kept rooting for them all the way through the book. Well written story and I'd gladly recommend it to my friends.

2 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?.......2007-05-29

I just finished this book yesterday and I can't even remember the names of the lead characters, that's how interesting I found it to be. I thought it might get better if I kept reading but, sadly, it didn't. I either love Sandra Brown's work or I hate it and sometimes I wonder, after reading work like French Silk, White Hot, Tidings of Great Joy (or whatever that one was) and Two Alone if this could possibly be the same woman who wrote Envy, The Alibi, Witness, Richochet and Chill Factor. The guy in this book was a total jerk and bully and I got seriously tired of the girl's whining. I was turned off that they took up residence in a cabin where two disgusting cavemen had lived and ate from their dishes and took baths in their tub and after offing them (rightfully so), they cohabited there like Ma & Pa Ingalls with her cooking and cleaning and him going off into the wild to slay their supper. It was just a bit too quirky. However, being that I'm always willing to read her books, I picked up Demon Rumm after chucking Two Alone and I have to say, I don't want to put it down. It started out good and gets better with every page I turn. If people thought Two Alone was good, they should read some of the previously mentioned ones. She's a lot better author than this.

5 out of 5 stars In pursuit of a simple life, a voyage of self discovery.......2005-05-10

This book is the story of Mike Tomkies, who built a small plywood shack on a Canadian wilderness shoreline and lived there for more than a year. He arrived with some camping skills and some general carpenter skills, but really no idea how to build a house to withstand the winter weather. An elderly neighbor, who happened to be a skilled carpenter, helped him build his small house. This friend also advised him on his water supply and how to deal with bear attacks. Otherwise Mike was pretty much on his own.

His mood goes from the early summer euphoria of finally getting there and working on his house, to the melancholy of fall and the animals and his friend leaving, to the depths of dispair and loneliness in winter. He writes manuscripts for publication and has them rejected. He receives a Dear John letter from a woman he had hoped would join him in his cabin. He wrecks his boat, which is his main way to go for supplies, and also rolls his old truck down a gully. Life looks pretty grim at one point, and I expected him to pack up and leave. Then he is adopted by a stray dog he names Booto. He and Booto bond, and live together happily. They spend the following summer hiking, camping and backpacking through the beautiful Canadian wilderness, encountering bears and other wildlife and scenery beautiful beyond description.

He also learns that several of his manuscripts were accepted for publication, and the money they bring eases his worries about buying food.

At the end of this book I was expecting to read that it was written recently. Instead, I find out that then-40-year-old Tomkies wrote this book in the 1960s. He was a Scot who went on to live in the Scottish wilderness for 20 more years, and wrote many articles on the wildlife found there. It's hard to believe he is now over 70 years old. His book has a timeless feel to it, and deals with the emotions, fears and growth any of us would experience if we were able to take off alone to live in a small hut in the woods.
