The Photographic Guide to Schooling Your Horse.......2007-03-13
I found this book really helpful with it's clear photographs and succinct descriptions of movements. There is nothing too technical here and everything is explained in easy-to-understand text, with accompanying photographs. The photography is quite exemplary. In showing a trot-to-halt transition it clearly shows the 'stages' of the transition and in shoulder-in, there is a great picture taken from above the rider and the movement is clearly seen. The contents covers Schooling, flatwork, lateral work, polework, jumping and western riding and all with great photographs of 'explanation'.
Book Description

It explains the benefits of working horses on the bit, why horses often don't, and how to help them do it. It teaches you how to introduce your horse to jumping and includes useful solutions to most jumping problems.
An important feature of the book is the section on exercises, designed to help your horse become stronger, better balanced, and more flexible. RIDING AND SCHOOLING YOUR HORSE will help you achieve success in whatever sphere of the horse world you may wish to enter.

Book Description
*A proven title with more than 15,000 copies sold in hardcover
*Features the training advice all riders need to work better with their horses
*Includes the expertise of top Olympic and Western riding experts
Riders never stop the quest to improve their technical skills, and this highly visual book shows them exactly how to push their own abilities--and those of their horses. There's advice on everything from flat work, polework and jumping to lateral work and Western riding. Readers will also find guidance for improving the suppleness, obedience and athleticism of horses. This is a one-stop resource for more rewarding time in the saddle!
Book Description
This audio lesson begins by exploring the concept of opening up the body with simple exercises on the ground. These exercises free tension and help the rider to appreciate the upward (core) support of the back and abdomen in order to achieve a balanced position. Once accomplished, the rider's weight may flow freely and centrally downward via gravity, uniting the rider with the horse.
The feeling is encouraged furing the warm-up so the rider remains in good balance to free the horse's back. The main portion of the lessons deals with the school figures, to emphasize the importance of stretching, suppling, and bending; transferring weight to the haunches; lightening the trot; and promoting overall engagement of the horse in all gaits. The tape provides a very good workout against a supportive musical program for any horse and rider working at any level. A refreshing way of introducing a more thinking approach to general schooling.

A Must for starting your youngster.......2007-01-16
This is such an easy book to read and follow. It is extremely useful, no-nonsense training for a horse just starting off. Tom wrote an inscription in my copy of this book " may this book be helpful with any horse - donkey or mule - that might come your way" I think this sums it up in his own words. A Great Book.
I loved it.......2000-10-22
This book covers the handling, breaking and schooling of young horses. In a very easy to understand layout. This book contains some very good concepts and different approaches in the scholing of young horses. (It really helped me)

Book Description
Peter E. Vaillancourt presents a collection of popular and emerging methodologies that take advantage of E. coli's ability to quickly and inexpensively express recombinant proteins. The authors focus on two areas of interest: the use of E. coli vectors and strains for production of pure, functional protein, and the use of E. coli as host for the functional screening of large collections of proteins and peptides. Among the cutting-edge techniques demonstrated are those for rapid high-level expression and purification of soluble and functional recombinant protein and those essential to functional genomics, proteomics, and protein engineering.

A "Prequel" of Epic Proportions.......1999-06-04
First there was the engaging saga of "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria" that hit the bookshelves and captivated readers worldwide. Now, this TWO VOLUME epic shows us where it all began. It reveals the origins and transformation of an innocent coliform, Ecoli, who just wanted to gain sustenance from its gutter lifestyle and be left alone. I personally found it sorrowful how it became ripped from its sewer home and was probed, analyzed, and mutated into the monster of research literature that it became. It becomes obvious that it was BECAUSE of the dominance of Ecoli, and its more virulent cousin, Styphi, that Bacillus became the rebel hero of bacteria that would wrench the eyes and hearts of scientists away from the Gram-Negative Empire and would bring balance to bacteriology. Particularly intriguing were the chapters related to segregation. While this grand novel is NOT for children, it remains an educational tour-de-force that should be read again - many times over.

Old woman's travel book.......2003-10-09
I purchased this book before traveling to Europe alone. Although I didn't "backpack" across Europe - I am not old enough to find the suggestions in this book useful. If you are under 50 years old - don't bother.
Author/Publisher--Please hire a professional copy editor!.......2003-02-12
I guess I don't need tips dressing, packing, nor do I need makeup tips. I can't eat chocolate. There is nothing in this travel book that is new or different. I would recommend a more professionally published book by Fodor's or Rick Steves.
I have to admit, I only made it to Section 4 because this book is in terrible need of a professional copy edit. I got too frustrated.
Travel Tips.......2002-05-07
"Travel Tips for the Sophisticated Woman" lives up to its title. As an experienced traveler who has been all over the world--both for pleasure and business, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is set apart from other guides by information that goes beyond the usual travel tips. Suggestions and advice for social situations, etiquette, art, clothes, and shopping are just some of the things included. The folding and packing techniques outlined are truly unique and I will definitely try out the author's suggestions on my next adventure. This is also the only travel book I have read that reviews chocolate--a must for the true chocoholic!
Practical advice offered in Travel Tips.......2002-04-14
Vestanen has done a great job of providing practical, useful advice for women travelers. From luggage tags to museums in New Orleans to fabrics that are out of style, this travel book has something for everyone. Easy to read, concise, and well organized.
It's like traveling with a Pro!.......2002-04-12
"Travel Tips for the Sophistocated Woman" is a really great resource book for anyone who travels....women and men alike. While Laura's focus is on international travel, you don't need to be a globtrotter to find value in this guide. I travel a great deal domestically for my job and have had a multitude of occasions to apply her travel saavy tips.
I usually travel alone so I have been particularly appreciative of the safety tips she shares. The easy-to-follow, common sense tips for packing and even chosing what to wear have saved me a lot of time and effort at my hotel when I'm unpacking and preparing my clothes for the next day. Her packing tips are really valuable for people traveling with kids as they tend to require so many items to make them feel at home on the road.
I have recommended this book to a few of my co-workers who are now applying Laura's recommendations on their business trips. I continue to hear many compliments for the golden tidbits she provides.
I look forward to being able to apply my newly acquired travel skills to a trip overseas...alas, that will have to wait for a later date. I will soon be using all that I've learned from Laura when I travel to Guatemala in July to bring home my children. You can be sure I'll spend an hour or so reviewing all of the efficiency tips and the advise she provides on settling into foreign cultures with that adventure.
If you're new to travel, I think this book is a must have. It will make you feel more confident and relaxed about your trip and allow you to enjoy the experience more fully. If you're a travel veteran, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you will glean from this little gem.
If you haven't already, check out Laura's website. She continues to collect and share travel tips with anyone who wants to improve their travel experience.
Book Description
Lisa Shilling is 16, smart, attractive--and she is losing her mind. Some days are "light," and everything is normal; during her "dark" days, she hides deep within herself, and nothing can reach her. Her teachers ignore what is happening. Her parents deny it. Lisa's friends are the only ones who are listening--and they walk with her where adults fear to tread. This classic novel of a teenager's descent into madness, in the tradition of Go Ask Alice and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, has remained a best seller for close to thirty years.
"Compassionate and tragic, an indictment of adults who refuse to get involved."--The New York Times
Customer Reviews:
Weak Adults.......2007-06-11
Lisa, a high school student, knows something is seriously wrong with her. She is incredibly moody, sometimes happy and cheerful but other times she gets so dark and unhappy that it seems the entire world is against her and there is nowhere she can turn for help. She has tried to talk to her parents, rich people who are very concerned about their public image, but it hasn't been any help at all. Her parents seem to think that she only wants to talk to a psychiatrist because it is what all of the other cool kids are doing. They tell her that she is imagining her problems.
Lisa's friends are concerned, though. Mary Nell and Betsy decide that if Lisa's parents won't help her, then it is up to them to do something. They decide to offer Lisa the counseling she needs, and to give her a place where she can let out her feelings and hopefully help her friends to help her be cured. Lisa agrees to the idea, and asks that another girl, Elizabeth, be included in the therapy. Mary Nell and Betsy don't know Elizabeth very well but because her presence is important to Lisa, they agree.
Together Mary Nell, Betsy and Elizabeth try to help Lisa to navigate the often terrifying world of mental illness as they desperately hope one of the adults in their lives will step in to help them all out.
I liked that the kids in this book stood up for each other and didn't give up when the adults at their school and Lisa's parents refused to help. I also liked that Lisa wasn't miraculously cured. Even though her friends were doing their best, they still weren't able to fix her mental illness by themselves.
I thought that the adults in this book were really weak. I'd hope that in real life there would have been at least one adult who cared enough to step in and try to help Lisa. I didn't like that people didn't pick up on Elizabeth's story. It seemed obvious to me, and I thought Mary Nell should have been able to figure it out and Betsy should have figured it out much earlier than she did.
Dated, but one could abstract the plot lessons to modern times.......2006-09-13
This novella is told from the point of view of teenaged Lisa's quiet, unassuming friend Betsy. Lisa believes she is going crazy with visions, nightmares, and wild mood swings. Her parents diagnose their daughter as a drama queen and no teachers want to get involved, so a trio of Lisa's friends set out to provide talk therapy and ensure that she is never alone.
Reading this today, in 2006, the plot seems rather aimless and dated--we now give Prozac to dogs, watch psychology talk shows, hear about the physciatric health of our celebrities, and send therapists to high schools en masse after traumatic events. The plot can certainly be abtstracted to today's world, because psychological problems continue to go undiagnosed, but many details would have to be changed to make this story relevant to modern teens.
Perhaps modern popular culture has desensitized me as a reader, leading me to label this novel aimless. The events of Lisa's unraveling don't hold much shock value any more, or work as devices to drive the plot of a short novel.
Dated, but still wonderful..........2005-11-09
I read this book several times as a teenager, and recently acquired a new copy at a yard sale. Thought I'd give it another go.
It was copyrighted 1969, which is obvious by the many references to how "groovy" Paul Newman is , but it's a pretty great book. 16 year old Lisa is losing her mind, and her parents refuse to see that, so three friends decide to give her 'therapy' and help her as much as they can. Very moving story.
a realistic look into mental illness.......2005-09-24
I read this book as a pre-teen, as I was beginning to deal with severe juvenile depression. The dark feelings and fear described in the book are real and impossibly unbearable, especially for a child. Some may believe that the material is dated (the terminology is less than PC), however, adults are still reluctant to acknowledge that children/teens experience mental illness. The book helped me to realize that I was neither "crazy" nor alone at a time when my teachers and parents labeled me as shy and typically moody. This book has stayed with me all these years, and I would recommend it to anyone who is dealing with childhood emotional issues or a child with emotional issues. As a current mental health professional, I keep several copies on hand for at-risk children and families.
Possibly outdated.......2005-03-26
This novel was great in its time, when mental illness was a forbidden subject and troubled young people were usually dismissed as stubborn discipline cases.
It didn't teach much about mental illness, as such. It did, however, address a fact that wasn't acknowledged much at the time: children and young adults aren't exempt from mental illness. It could happen to you, it could happen to a friend, and if it does, you're going to have a hard time getting help for it.
Now, in the age of Dr. Phil and Oprah, kids probably have the opposite problem. Parents and teachers often suspect mental illness no matter what a young person does, so it's quite a different world.
The book also addressed the fact that parents don't always do the right thing. For a kid in the 70's, it was still something of a novelty to read about parents and teachers being so aggressively clueless.
So, it's not so much about teenagers being crazy, as it is about the crazy things that people will say and do when they want to avoid dealing with a serious problem. In that sense, I think the book still resonates.
