Book Description
One of the finest bands of the British New Wave, Squeeze shot to the top of the charts in the 1980s with a string of hits including "Cool for Cats," "Up the Junction," "Another Nail in My Heart," and "Tempted." In this definitive account, Glen Tilbrook and Chris Difford, the band's creative heart, discuss Squeeze's history, their distinctive sound, and the creative process behind their catchy melodies and provocative, emotional lyrics. The book also includes lyric sheets and a detailed discography.

To be perhaps the one who..........2007-05-22
...will forever love you. Yes, I am a diehard Squeeze fan, thus my interest in the book, but I can recommend it to anyone who is interested in the craft of music; to anyone who is interested in what makes a musician tick, and perservere, despite the lack of overarching success. Squeeze definitely perservered, and at times prospered from their genius, but a series of misfortunes and misdirection, from within and without, kept them from achieving the success they truly deserved. After reading this book, my Squeeze discs, tapes, albums etc. have all hit the stereo once again, and to me they sound as wonderful as always, but again, the sight through lens of the diehard fan must be acknowledged. Of all the music I listened to in the 80s and early 90s, Squeeze was one of a small number of bands that I absolutely LOVED beyond all reason.
The insight provided by the duo, at the prompting of Drury, is nothing short of fascinating, though it is a bit disconcerting to hear favorite tunes dismissed as twaddle. However, their perspective, decades after the fact, is honest and interesting. The background provided about the band is more interesting still. I heartily recommend it to all fans of the band, and to anyone who enjoys music. And when you're done, hunt up your Squeeze back catalog and have a good listen. You'll never let those cassettes grow dusty again.
In Quintessence.......2006-07-02
I was quite surprised when I stumbled across this book on Amazon. Being that it is now 2006, eight years after Squeeze released their last proper album, I thought this was something I would never see. Being a self=proclaimed die hard Squeeze fan, I quickly snatched it up. First of all, it is a very easy read, you will not feel encumbered at any point to stick with it.
I loved the accounts of the early days of Squeeze, how they managed to come together and had a great time simply playing their music. Chris is quite forthcoming in the way that he describes the impact that alcohol had on his life and how it lead to a certain amount of alienation between Glenn and himself. Chris and Glenn admit the trouble that they had communicating with each other, which one might not expect since they had spent so much time together in their life. This book covers the highs from "Cool for Cats" to the lows of being ignored in the publicity department on their later albums.
I agree with others who have said it would have been nice to have some insight from other band members- Jools Holland, Paul Carrack, or Gilson Lavis- to get a fuller picture of the band.
This book is a welcome gift for those who have enjoyed Squeeze's wonderful music over the years. A nice portrait for those to reminisce over the music that has brought much joy to our hearts.
Squeeze - the clean and the dirty.......2006-04-17
This book is set up in an interesting way. First there is a concise introduction of the group's early days. Then each album is dissected, with Difford and Tilbrook sharing memories of each song, such as the writing behind them and recordings. There is an introduction of the album and in the end of each chapter a discussion of the album's ramifications, how it fared etc. At the end of the book the conclusion of Squeeze is navigated and finally some texts of most of their best songs are introduced.
This set-up actually works great. The reader gets all the main details without getting bogged down with lengthy discussions about trivial matters left best alone to the hard core fans. The memories of Difford and Tilbrook are interesting to read, I for one did not know half of all the troubles surrounding the group. Having been a huge fan when East Side Story was released, it is interesting noting how things went quickly downhill after that with Sweets From a Stranger. Tilbrook was obviously at fault, being bossy and stubborn. It was also sad for me to realize what a prick he really can be. When re-uniting Squeeze he sacked their long time bassist, John Bentley, being a somewhat perfectionist. By doing so, however, the face of Squeeze changed forever. It is interesting that Paul Carrack leaves the band almost immediately after East Side Story, realizing that the duo would never allow him to become a full term song writer nor singer within the group. Yet he made Tempted their biggest hit, ever, with his soulful singing. He later enjoyed a successful career as a solo artist, one can only wonder what Squeeze would have become had Difford and Tilbrook allowed him more space within the band.
It would have been great fleshing the book a little by getting some other band members' opinions. Also, after having read some of Difford's texts, many of which are a work of genius, one craves to have more within the book.
This is, on the whole, however a great read which I recommend for all Squeeze fans. Would give it 4 and a half stars if I could, but lean more towards 5 stars.
Fascinating, but.......2006-01-19
Drury could have provided a bit more context and perspective, rather than just tossing whiffle balls at Glenn and Chris. Still, it's better than nothing and serves as a powerful reminder of just how great Squeeze was.
Squeeze: Accessible without being ordinary.......2005-09-25
Loved learning more about one of the most criminally underrated bands to come out of the UK. This book is not just for Squeeze fans but for fans of intelligent pop music and for those who are interested in the craft of songwriting. The interviews with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford were fascinating, honest and revealing. This book will inspire you to revisit your Squeeze records and hopefully motivate new fans to check out their work. Glenn's documentary "Glenn Tilbrook: One For The Road" is coming out soon and Glenn and Chris have some fab solo CD's available as well. When will Squeeze be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

A MUST FOR ANY MILITARY FIREARMS ENTHUSIAST........1999-03-22
COMBAT GUNS BY CHRIS BISHOP AND IAN DRURY IS AN ABSOLUTELY MARVELLOUS BOOK MAINLY AIMED AT THE YOUNGER PERSON WITH AN INTEREST IN MODERN MILITARY FIREARMS,DATING FROM THE EARLY PART OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY UP TO THE LATE NINETEEN EIGHTIES. THE BOOK COVERS MOST OF THE MORE COMMON FIREARMS IN USE,WITH PHOTOGRAPHS TO ACCOMPANY EACH AND EVERY REVIEW.THE BOOK IS SPLIT INTO SECTIONS COVERING DIFFERENT TYPES OF SMALLARMS ie HANGUNS WW1 AND 2,RIFLES,SUB MACHINE GUNS,ASSAULT RILES,COMBAT SHOTGUNS AND RIOT CONTROL WEAPONS WITH EACH SECTION SPLIT AGAIN INTO DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OF ORIGIN. IN EACH SECTION THERE IS ALSO AN EXTRA REVIEW ON FIREARMS THAT THE AUTHORS FEEL NEED EXTRA ATTENTION WITH LARGE TWO PAGE CUT AWAY DRAWINGS ON GUNS LIKE THE M16 AND M60.THIS ALL ADDS TOWARDS MAKING A VERY INFORMATIVE,COLOURFUL,EASY TO READ AND EASY TO RESEARCH REFERENCE BOOK. I HAVE HAD "COMBAT GUNS" FOR NEARLY ELEVEN YEARS AND STILL QUITE FREQUENTLY FIND MYSELF RESOURSING IT FOR INFORMATION PARTICULARY ON COMBAT SHOTGUNS AS MATERIAL IN THIS AREA IS HARDER TO FIND.JUST GOING TO SHOW THAT IT ALSO HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER THE MORE LEARNED ENTHUSIAST.

Unfair comparison.......1999-12-09
After discovering Andy Goldworthy I wanted to go deeper into his kind of soulful art, his unique way of uncovering beauty where others don't see anything else but what's there. I really felt touched by his book and his communion with nature. Looking to explore further into this new vision, I came across Chris Drury. In your book reviews you compare him to Andy Goldworthy and somebody even calls him more soulful. When I got Chris Drury's book, I was disappointed, almost cheated. No doubt Chris Drury is a capable craftsman, but it's unfair to compare the two artists. Chris Drury's art doesn't even come close to reaching the depths Andy Goldworthy's does. Chris Drury utilizes nature for his art, whereas Andy Goldworthy blends with nature and together they do art.
Beautiful, mystical, natural, quietly profound art........1999-08-20
This book is an inspriation. Drury has a strong and quiet way of finding the primative symbols of early art and revealing them to the modern eye. He is a breath of fresh air. Much like Andy Goldsworthy but with a depth of spirit that reaches deeper.

Mount Rainier, North America's biggest volcano, looms over Seattle like an invitation to... adventure? Disaster? Discovery? It's all of the above for Bruce Barcott, a Seattle writer who captures the mountain from multiple angles in this luminous biography that defines Rainier's landscape to be like none other on the continent. By turns witty and introspective, Barcott's trip to the top of the glacier-clad peak is filled with history, scientific observation, and a divided personal attachment that struggles to make sense of the mountain and its effect on the surrounding land and people. The Measure of a Mountain is a literate, entertaining view of a totemic Northwest landmark.
Book Description
What happens when the most potent icon of the Pacific Northwest--Mount Rainier--is explored, explained, and observed by one of the region's most promising literary talents? A mythic mountainis uncovered that is both beautiful and terrifying.

Just another "environmental " "journalist".......2007-03-28
The one star is for having the nerve to call Michael Crichton's State of Fear "a horrible anti-science potboiler, which was easily the worst book I read all year".
No desire to vist Ranier after this.......2004-12-31
After slogging through this overwritten and overwrought account of the author's obsession with Mr. Rainier, I lost what little interest I had in ever visiting the place. The mountain is painted as dreary and gray, with grimy little spots of human encroachment. The only moderately interesting part of the book are the chapters on the Himalayas and high altitude climbing, which, if Barcott stayed on point, would not even be in the book. No wonder his girlfriend got fed up with him; he is not just a bore, he is a bore with an ill-defined and pointless obsession.
My Favorite Book Ever.......2003-07-24
I think if I were stranded on a deserted island, I would want a copy of this book as well as all those Dostoevsky's I've always promised myself I would read one day. Being an avid climber, this is probably my favorite book of all times, and the book I am always sure to purchase as a gift for others to enjoy. This is NOT a climbing guide or a book just for the climbing community (although we love it). This is a book for anyone who loves the Pacific Northwest, mountains, mountain weather, great stories of adventure and tragedy, geology, hight altitude bugs, plants, animals, and good humor. Each chapter unfolds an entire diverse topic. You'll find yourself going back and reading your favorite chapters.
You'll Be Looking for People to Read This Book To!.......2002-12-12
I bought this book a couple of years ago and have reread it twice already. The first time I read it I found myself hunting down my husband over and over saying "you've got to listen to this"... Parts of the book are laugh-out-loud funny. But in addition to the humor, the book is a well-written and imformative glimpse into all facets of Mt. Rainier. I've been in love with this mountain since I was a child, and I highly recommend this interesting book by a talented author.
Trying to Measure up to Ranier.......2002-07-29
If you are interested in the outdoors, American history, geology, glaciology, entomology or ecology, then this book is worth your time. Barcott has assembled a witty, introspective book on all things Rainier.
I had never heard of Barcott until a friend sent me this book in preparation for a trip to Rainier. By the time I finished the book, I was equally more drawn to and fearful of the mountain than before. And Barcott is in good company. Jon Krakauer, who had the same effect on Everest in the minds of many several years ago with Into Thin Air, has some impressive things to say about Barcott's work on the back cover.
At one point, while discussing the natural sciences as Rainier relates to them, Barcott mentions that "science isn't truth, it's merely our best stab at it." In describing this book, I'd characterize it not as an authoritative work on Rainier, but Barcott's personal best stab at it. This is a fun, non-scholarly book that offers insight into virtually every aspect of Rainier, including the history of how it got its name, the bugs that inhabit the mountain, the annual dance of glacial shift, the wild flowers that keep the mountains delicate ecology in balance and the people who are drawn to the mountain, each for their own reasons.
Rainier is an intriguing mountain, and Measure of a Mountain is equally intriguing. Barcott's no nonsense, balanced style makes you feel like you are talking to a friend about their own obsession with Rainier, and his descriptions of hikes around the perimeter of the mountain make you feel like you are suffering the bug bites and soaking in the sublime surroundings right there with him. Most of all, Measure of a Mountain is a vivid portrait of one man's attempt to find balance and to understand himself in light of his surroundings and Barcott's style set against the backdrop of Rainier delivers an account free of the indulgence and self-obsession that so typically taints writers.
This is a good book, and worth a few hours of your time.

great.......2007-09-19
This book is great. It is and orphan girl who has flashbacks that rremind her of her life. It is a good book to read if you like exciting books!!!
Moving and beautiful - like Hollis' pictures.......2007-08-29
I'm rediscovering my love for juvenile fiction and this book has definitely found a place in my heart. "Pictures of Hollis Woods" has two stories interwoven throughout: the past (as seen through the sketches of the talented but troubled 12-year-old Hollis) and the present (her current foster home with a beautiful yet needy artist). This is a girl who has run away from too many foster homes, described by one as a "mountain of trouble". The poor thing is just misunderstood. Throughout the entire book, I found myself silently rooting for her to find what she has always wished for: to belong in a family. I love when an author is so skillful in creating a character who will remain forever in my mind. Patricia Reilly Giff has certainly accomplished that through the unforgettable Hollis Woods.
Pictures of Hollis Woods.......2007-08-21
Pictures of Hollis Woods is by far my favorite book. It tells the story of a girl named Hollis who has been through such a hard life, that she shuts everyone out of it. She trys to hide how sad she is inside by being angry and mean. " I read in a book once that if a person looks into your eyes they can see into your soal. I didn't want anyone looking into my soal." Hollis is an artist that was left on the road to die as a baby, and since that travels from foster home to foster home. Hollis dreams of a family, and wants nothing more then to belong. Each chapter of the book switches settings (from the preasent to the past). The chapters that are set in the past time tell us about a foster home Hollis lived in, how it was everything she ever wanted. Each past chapter leads up to the middle of the book where we find out one of the main reasons that Hollis is so sad, and then the rest of the chapters continue in preasent time. Pictures of Hollis Woods is an inspiring story that will have you looking for the things in life that matter. I truly feel sorry for the people who rated this book one star because oviously they don't have a brain big enuff to understand the story. That or they're too shallow to understand the story.
Hollis Woods has one Wish - to have a family of her own..........2007-07-15
Hollis Woods was abandoned in a place called Holliswood when she was one month old. The note left with her asked them to name her Hollis Woods. Since then, Hollis has moved from foster home to foster home. Through it all, she drew pictures of her life. Hollis was good at drawing but had trouble with the rest of her life. When one foster parent told her that she was a mountain of trouble, Hollis believed it.
We are introduced to Hollis as she is being placed with a woman named Josie Cahill. Josie is an older, beautiful woman. She is known to be good with her foster kids. Hollis likes her from the start. Josie is an artist who carves characters from tree branches. Josie is also becoming more and more forgetful. This works in Hollis' favor for a while because she can skip school and Josie doesn't seem to mind. The problem is that eventually the school will mind and so will the foster care agents. What will they do if they find out that Josie doesn't remember as well as she used to? Hollis might not get to stay.
And that is not the only problem Hollis faces. Through flashbacks which are really descriptions of pictures that Hollis has drawn, we learn that Hollis recently ran away from a family called the Regans. I appreciate that the flashback descriptions and Hollis' thoughts about the Regans were italicized. Through these italicized pictures/descriptions, we learn about the time Hollis spent with the Regans. We learn that even though she loved the family and they loved her in return, Hollis felt that she had to leave.
The two worlds eventually come together beautifully in this wonderful book. The writing is tight. Not a word is wasted. The descriptions are crystal clear. The characters are tender-hearted and so likable.
I enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it highly.

Book Review on Pictures of Hollis Woods
By Konrad Altvater
Hollis Woods is a great artist but she runs away from foster homes too many times. But because she is an artist she draws pictures of moments in her life at other houses, to keep the memories with her. When Hollis Woods was a baby she was abandoned at a place called Hollis Woods. There was a note on her that said "Name her Hollis Woods." Ever since that day she has been going from foster home to foster home and now she is twelve years old. The Newberry Honor book Pictures of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff, displays that if you are patient for long enough, good things will come to you in time. This story takes place in Long Island, New York and Upstate New York. It is in a modern time period like the 1900's. Josie is Hollis's most recent foster mom whom Hollis is very fond of. The problem is that Hollis Woods does not want to leave Josie alone because she is old and forgets things too many times.
When the placement agency comes by and finds out that Josie isn't taking Hollis to school, the agency tells Hollis she has to leave and another family is waiting for her. But Hollis Woods has an idea. Hollis takes Josie to one of her favorite places on earth. This book was very intriguing because it is all about how you can follow your dreams no matter what you have to go through to get there.
