Customer Reviews:
Enjoy a 37-trip canoe anthology, without the mosquitoes........1998-10-26
How I spent my summer vacation: Unable to get away on a canoe trip this past summer, I joined in spirit the women featured in Rivers Running Free. The book is a collection of 37 first person narratives by and about women examining their relationships with the wilderness, their companions and themselves. The trips date back as far as 1905 and range all over North America, including urban adventures along the Hudson and Mississippi, and the daunting, almost heartbreaking, journeys through Labrador or down the Saskatchewan. The strikingly common threads in all these journeys are the importance of working with nature (as opposed to trying to conquer it) and the value of developing co-operative relationships with long-time friends and total strangers. There are a number of useful and enlightening maps (canoists love maps!) showing the course of each trip (with points of interest along the way) and one of North America showing where each trip occurred. The prevailing spirit that seems to drive most of the women in this book, in spite of the portages and the mosquitoes, is the realization that "We're getting too old not to be doing what we want to do."

Many similarities, going downriver at a peaceful pace..but watch those hydralics! Water journeys lead one further than hike in woods

Book Description
Set in the 1960's, The Night Travelers, portrays America under the shadow of the Vietnam War and the counterculture that developed in opposition to the war. The characters reflect a time when often violent pressures affected the American community and family life. Kate Harbison is a socially ambitious scientist whose life revolves around her work, which includes testing chemical weapons on animals for the military. Kate's daughter, Mary, who cares little for social distinction, falls in love with Jeff, an antiwar activist. Mary and Jeff's life involves traveling at night on the run to escape the draft by crossing the border into Canada. Ultimately, the story reveals that only death can destroy the ties that bind.

Book Description
The summer Hattie turns 12, her predictable smalltown life is turned on end when her uncle Adam returns home for the first time in over ten years. Hattie has never met him, never known about him. He's been institutionalized; his condition invovles schizophrenia and autism.Hattie, a shy girl who prefers the company of adults, takes immediately to her excitable uncle, even when the rest of the family -- her parents and grandparents -- have trouble dealing with his intense way of seeing the world. And Adam, too, sees that Hattie is special, that her quiet, shy ways are not a disability,
Customer Reviews:
What happened to Adam?.......2007-04-08
Hattie is a twelve year old girl who lives in Millerton with her mom and dad. Her mom and dad run a boarding house. Her grandparents live nearby. Hattie learns that she has an uncle she never knew about. Her uncle is mentally ill and has been away at a special school. The school is closing so he is coming back home to live with Hattie's grandma and grandpa. Hattie has never really had many friends and she enjoys spending time with her uncle, Adam.
The carnival is coming to town and Hattie goes to it with her family. She keeps seeing the same the girl, Leila, in the ticket booth, running rides and helping with other things. Hattie learns that Leila's mom is a side show, she is the pretzel women. Leila's family travels around with the carnival. Hattie becomes good friends with Leila, and Leila lets her ride the rides for free and have free food. Hattie finally gets Adam to go to the carnival with her.
One night Hattie's grandparents are having a party and Hattie doesn't want Adam sitting in his room alone. She decides she is going to sneak him out and take him to the carnival with her. They go on the Ferris wheel and it gets stuck. Adam gets very nervous and breaks the bar and tries to climb down. They call the police and take him to the hospital. Hattie gets in big trouble for sneaking him out of the house.
Hattie is not allowed to leave the house or see Adam. Adam is also not allowed to leave. When his curfew is over he goes to Hattie's parents' house to visit one of the boarders he likes. Her name is Miss Valentine and she works at a bank. When he shows up at the house, he has flowers for Miss Valentine. He takes the flowers to her room and finds her in bed with her friend, Henry. He runs out of the house.
When Hattie is able to leave the house, she goes to the carnival to see Leila. She finds out the carnival has left town and so has Leila. Hattie decides she will write a letter to Leila. When she gets back home, her parents and grandparents wonder if she has seen Adam. They can not find Adam anywhere.
You will need to read this book to find out what happened to Adam. It was an excellent book that I would recommend to any junior high girl.
Crazy Kid.......2007-03-28
I encourage everyone to read this superb book. A Corner of the Universe was one of the few books I enjoyed. The book left me on my tiptoes to know what happened next, I could not put it down. This book has a very big surprise that I was shocked about. I didn't think that Adam would hang himself. I can relate this book to my life because I have been to a carnival and been scared to go on a Ferris wheel just like Adam. I loved this book and hope to read more books by Ann M. Martin.
tash says... this book rocks!.......2007-03-13
A CORNER OF MY OWN
The name of my book is A Corner of the Universe by Ann M. Martin. The fantastic 189 page book takes place at Hattie Owen's house and the fairgrouds.
A RETARDED UNCLE, AN AWESOME BOOK!
Hattie Owen`s uncle Adam is retarded. Not physically, but mentally. Adam can be feeling great, then burst into tears. Adam has perfectly normal characteristics such as his massive crush on Hattie's families' boarder, Angel Valentine. Meanwhile, Hattie finds a friend at Fred's Fun time Carnival that has just come to town, so Hattie takes her Uncle Adam. After they had gone a lot, Adam decides to do something with Hattie on her birthday... ride the Ferris wheel. Once they get to the top, something drastic happens. Where did Adam go?
I'M FEELING IT!
In this book, Ann M. Martin really makes you feel like you are there seeing everything. She gave me the perfect image. I can feel Hattie's happiness, and I can also feel Adam's anger at being called a freak.
A SPECIAL PIECE OF THE UNIVERSE
My favorite part in this book is when Hattie describes the buzzer that her nana pushes on with her foot to get her maid. Ann M. Martin described it like the temptation was killing her! books I have ever read. I loved it, because it seemed so real. This is great for everyone!
A Surprise Tragedy.......2007-02-17
When Hattie's mentally challenged uncle Adam, who she never knew existed, comes back from his closed down school, she sees so much more in the world than ever before. Hattie now realizes that her nana and papa aren't the most perfect happiest rich people. She sees people living in her own boarding house lying to her parents. Most importantly she finds those you truly think are happy always hide something inside. This is how it is with Adam and when no one but Hattie starts to realize this something major may happen that Hattie doesn't know about until it happens.
I feel bad for Adam because no one can comprehend how he feels and what its like. When Hattie starts to understand a little she can feel some of his pain. I believe Hattie appreciates the summer she spent with her uncle Adam. I feel this way because it opened her eyes and let her see the world in a new way. Adam made Hattie appreciate and love the world far more than she ever did before.

If you want to major in Carolina basketball, this is certainly the primary text. Breezily written, well researched, and rich with anecdotes, Four Corners solidly surveys a remarkable sporting phenomenon: the concentrated quartet of hoop dreamers--UNC, NC State, Duke, and Wake Forest--that dominates the ACC, and, for that matter, the NCAA tournament. Menzer, a sportswriter for the Winston-Salem Journal, tips off in the pre-ACC era of Coach Everett Case at State, and then looks at the teams and programs molded over time by such outsized presences as Frank McGuire, Dean Smith, Jim Valvano, Bones McKinney, and Mike Krzyzewski. "People can talk all they want about the Big Ten," says Duke's charismatic Coach K. "About Michigan and Ohio State and Indiana and Kentucky or whatever, but there's no way that compares. They're in different states. Here, we share the same dry cleaners." Four Corners carefully examines what comes out in the wash and, in the process, airs some pretty good dirty laundry. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
For sheer intensity and excitement, few contests can match a college basketball game—unless it's one played between two in-state, longtime conference foes separated by only a few miles of the hoops highway known as"Tobacco Road." The four major Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) schools in North Carolina have won eight NCAA titles and continue to dominate the modern college game like no other area in the country.
The winners of three national titles, the North Carolina Tar Heels have been a basketball powerhouse since the 1950s. Longtime coach Dean Smith and his famous "Four Corners" offense changed how the game wasplayed and ultimately forced the introduction of the shot clock. Down the road, the N.C. State Wolfpack won two national championships, and their coach Jimmy Valvano brought an extroverted enthusiasm to coaching stillrecalled with fondness and admiration. A powerhouse of big-time college basketball for five decades, the Duke Blue Devils, coached by Vic Bubas and later Mike Krzyzewski, have been to twelve Final Fours and have won three NCAA titles since 1991. In Winston-Salem the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have produced eleven All-Americans, ten ACC Players of the Year, and scores of successful NBA players.
Collectively the Big Four have made North Carolina the center of the basketball universe. This is their story.
Customer Reviews:
Welcome to North Carolina.......2002-04-23
To many fans of college basketball, the ACC can be defined most seasons by what happens within the confines of the state of North Carolina. With four teams growing up within 50 miles of each other, and each one featuring a host of truly unique and competitive individuals as their coaches, the North Carolina teams have continually dominated the scene in college basketball for the past 50 years.
The book follows the story of Duke, North Carolina, NC State, and Wake Forest from their days in the Southern Conference to the formation of the ACC, right up until today. Each era is defined by the men who coached and played for each of these teams throughout the years. The book provides an excellent history lesson on what has become the center of power in the most competitive conference in college basketball.
I have been a fan of ACC basketball for the last ten years and this book helped me to learn the history of the most storied teams within the league. If you are a fan of NCAA basketball, this is an excellent book and should be highly recommended.
An Apt Title.......2002-03-03
Four Corners is a thorough history of basketball in North Carolina--a very interesting subject for basketball fans everywhere (it is home to more dominant programs than any other state in the country)--but unfortunately Menzer's book is like the four corners defense in that it really slows things down. He is not a particularly good writer and his anecdotes often fall flat because he does a poor job of explaining the story. Another problem is that he relies on very few sources, so his book is terribly biased and its stories are limited. For instance, Menzer relies on Billy Packer to essentially tell Wake Forest's story. While Packer is amusing, he is arrogant and is only one person so Wake's history is not three dimensional at all and really doesn't seem particularly interesting. Despite these flaws, which would prevent me from recommending this book to anyone who doesn't love college basketball and particularly the Carolina schools, this book is a good companion for a fan and will give them some interesting historical context that will allow them to appreciate their team that much more. Also, it will provide some nice trivia for those who like to bring up obscure facts during arguments about who is the best player, team, coach, etc. in the history of these programs.
Great Book!!.......2001-06-01
Borrowed this from the library and brought it back late because I read it twice. I am planning to get it again and read it again. I have grown up with ACC basketball, but I never had the whole historical context laid out for me. This book does that. It is well written (thank you, but I understand "Duke continued their run" just fine) informative, chatty, and obviously written by someone who loves, lives, and breathes his subject matter.
Four Corners = Five Stars.......2000-03-03
Four Corners by Joe Menzer is an outstanding review of the modern era of college basketball in North Carolina. It is a must-read for the Carolina hoops fan and a good selection for any college basketball aficionado.
The wit and insight of Four Corners puts Menzer on a path trod by the likes of Frank DeFord and other greats of sports journalism. His style is well-structured and clean, without dips into slang and minutia that too often mar sports writing.
Four Corners is definitely Five Stars. Joe Menzer wins this year's "Sixth Man Award" for North Carolina college basketball.
You don't have to be from North Carolina to enjoy this book!.......1999-06-07
I have started my summer reading and so thoroughly enjoyed Menzer's Four Corners. I played womens's basketball and have always enjoyed the game. I never really understood the ACC rivalry. Thanks to Menzer's book, I do now. I so enjoyed this. A must read!
