5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous AZ!.......2006-05-25

My wife and I have lived in Arizona for over 20 years (we're native New Englanders). This book perfectly captures the beauty of our wonderful adopted state. I'll have to buy another copy soon as my son keeps borrowing it!

5 out of 5 stars Jack Dykinga's Arizona.......2006-03-28

I bought the book to learn more about Jack's photo sytle and techniques (because I plan to do a workshop with him this Spring), but the book hasn't left our coffee table. Everyone loves it. Big, beautiful photos. If only I could....

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars are not enough........2005-05-06

This is easily one of the finest books of landscape photography that I have ever seen. Dykinga has a brilliant eye and fantastic technique, but what really makes this book stand out is the quality of the printing (done in China, by the way). I would be pleased to get photographic prints of my own work that are as good as the prints contained herein. Dykinga's previous book, "Desert," is extraordinary, and I heartily recommend it, but "Arizona" somehow manages to top it.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive photographic tribute to Arizona's landscapes.......2005-01-25

Jack Dykinga is, in all likelihood, the only photographer to have already won a Pulitzer Prize before finding his photographic calling. That was in Chicago, before his 1976 "leave of absence" to Tucson. Before the "leave" became a "move." Before his switch from B&W film to color transparencies, and from 35mm to 4x5 view cameras. Before the desert got under his skin, along with the writings of Ed Abbey and Everett Ruess. Before Arizona was, as it is now, home.

25 years later, Jack has, in his eighth book, finally produced a large format photographic tribute devoted exclusively to his adopted home state. To Arizona's incredible rock formations, and the incredibly delicate flowers that border them. To the cacti, agave and octillo that abound. To the water, and the areas that are beautiful precisely because they lack water. And, most of all, to light. Most people would count themselves fortunate indeed to witness such moments of ephemeral light on even a handful of occasions. Frozen on these pages, there are dozens.

The 4x5 Arca Swiss and Wista view cameras and Schneider lenses with which Jack works produce tack-sharp images. They also produce very large images, more than 1300% greater than a 35mm chrome or negative. Thus, Jack's photos have been enlarged only minimally in this book, and the effect is stunning. As you initially turn each page while progressing through the book, it will probably be a rainbow with lightning, or a foreground saguaro framing a twin on a distant hill, or a juxtaposition of light and shadow that initially quickens your breath and pauses your hands on any given page. But after pausing, you will linger to marvel at the visible spines on a cactus, the sand grains on a dune, or the individual trees visible in a distant forest. The vistas are sweeping, but the details are not neglected.

I own hundreds of large format nature photography books and have read hundreds more, but take the time to review very few. "Arizona," however, is special, even in a state with an exceptional history of producing talented artists and stirring photographic monographs. Among Jack's books (all of which I own), this is my favorite save only "Desert: The Mojave and Death Valley," and I suspect it would surpass even that work in my mind if I were not a native Californian. The book was plainly not rushed, whether in conception, production, or presentation. It shows a clarity of vision beyond coincidental pairings of serendipitous or "pretty" photos. This is the work of a man that knew exactly what he wanted, set out to find it, and kept at it until not just an image or two, but the breadth of his intent, was "in the can." Characteristically erudite observations on the Grand Canyon State by Jack's longtime collaborator and essayist Chuck Bowden serve as the unifying, and finishing, touch.

I have had the pleasure of photographing in the field with Jack, and of conversing with him about a wide range of subjects both photographic and non-. He is an extraordinarily talented and generous photographer, and a passionately outspoken advocate for the natural world (particularly his beloved southwestern deserts). We are all fortunate to have him laboring on our behalf. The purchasers and recipients of this book are, in turn, fortunate to have such a marvelous testament to that labor. You will not find a book with a finer display of Arizona's natural beauty. Because, quite simply, there isn't one.

Book Description

The Photographs of Ansel Adams with the Writings of John Muir

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Ansel Adams whose landmark early photographs of wild America, originally taken for the Works Progress Administration, fill the pages of this splendid volume. Adams' breathtaking images are accompanied by excerpts from the writings of Sierra Club founder John Muir, the renowned conservationist who devoted his life to celebrating and preserving the American wilderness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American Photography at its Best.......2007-06-15

Breathtaking photos. Especially in light of the rudimentary equipment available at the time they were taken. Proves that Ansel Adams is still unsurpassed in American photography. Captures the majesty and beauty of the vanishing American wilderness. Members of Congress should view this work before voting to open refuge or wild lands to drilling and logging.

3 out of 5 stars Poor quality.......2007-05-03

Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. As educational book, to study composition or something like that, perhaps the book serves.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth Looking At.......2006-04-05

Poor reproduction quality. Actually no quality. Not approved by the Ansel Adams Publishing Rights Trust.

1 out of 5 stars Adams wouldn't have approved.......2005-07-18

While some photos are reasonable, most are seriously flawed. Some are flat, some are excessively contrasty, others seem murky and indistinct. Some of the photos need cleaning to remove dust spots, etc. Even the title is wrong , as the book includes photos of dams and sheep. There are many other excellent books, which have been prepared from Adams prints and produced with much more care. Buy one of those.

2 out of 5 stars Are we looking at the same book?.......2005-01-02

Many of Ansel Adams' exquisite photographs call out for large reproductions, and this book displays them in a decent size format. But what a waste. The reproductions are nearly all flat and murky, with little detail in the shadow. If I had read far enough down into the customer reviews, I would have been warned; but the reviews at the top of the stack were quite favorable. Which leads me to wonder: Are we looking at the same book? I advise readers to purchase Adams books published by Little, Brown, and Company (aka "Bulfinch"). Even at smaller sizes their books display much more detail and clarity than does this disappointing edition.

Book Description

In 1851, a war began in what would become Yosemite National Park, a war against the indigenous inhabitants that has yet to come to a real conclusion. A century later--1951--and about a hundred and fifty miles away, another war began when the U. S. government started setting off nuclear bombs at the Nevada Test Site, in what was called a nuclear testing program but functioned as a war against the land and people of the Great Basin. Savage Dreams is an exploration of these two landscapes. Together they serve as our national Eden and Armageddon and offer up a lot of the history of the west, not only in terms of Indian and environmental wars, but in terms of the relationship between culture--the generation of beliefs and views--and its implementation as politics.

5 out of 5 stars The Other Reviews Are Not About The Book.......2007-03-02

Wow, take a moment to read the other reviews of this book.

I picked this book up off a bargain table, and months later happened to take it with me when I was visiting Yosemite without knowing 1/2 the book was about Yosemite. That was kind of a thrill.

Solnit's historical and writing skills, her ability to build a world stage of activity and its interconnectedness with her narrative are extraordinary.

As a landscape artist and photographer, I find this book to be a great resource. Understanding the history of Yosemite is frankly consciousness shifting.

As the other reviewer says, nuclear weapons are our oyster.

Indians, big bangs, Central Park, Fremont and the Heart of Darkness. How about that.

4 out of 5 stars People should really learn Yosemite Native American history.......2007-01-10

If people would really read the TRUE history of Yosemite Indians they would find something interesting. First the Miwoks in the area were friends and workers for James Savage and Charles Webber, the founder of Stockton. The Miwoks had a working relationship with both white men and they dug gold for them. The real Indians of Yosemite were Mono Paiutes who tried to fight off the invasion, and not Miwoks. They were allied with the white invaders and they called James Savage "White father". I am a descendent of the original Indians of Yosemite and there is a problem. The defintion "Some of them are killers" for Yosemite was fabricated in 1978 and is not the original meaning of Yosemite. The real meaning was "The Killers" or "The Grizzlies" because the Miwoks were afraid of the Ahwahnees. It was Chief Bautista and Russio, who were helping the Mariposa Battalion, who coined that term "Yosemite" for the Indians in Yosemite Valley which they were afraid to enter. It is because the Miwoks were once enemies of Chief Tenaya and the Ahwahnees. 30 years Yosemite National Park Service hired a person named Craig Bates who was married to a Miwok woman and had a 1/2 Miwok son who created that new defintion. So it is increble that ONE person changed the meaning and defintion of one of the most important and well known parks in the whold world...and no one noticed. The Miwoks were actually the scouts and guides for James Savage and the Mariposa Battalion, but you would not know it because the information was controlled by the "Indian expert" at Yosemite, which causes wrong information to be written...like the actual defintion of Yosemite. For the real story read Lafayette H. Bunnell's Discovery of the Yosemite to find out the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A thrilling excursion into the heart of the West.......2004-05-19

If you have an open and inquisitive mind, no matter what your political outlook, you will enjoy this exploration of western America and our relationship with this unique landscape. Solnit weaves discussions about the settlement of the west by Euro-Americans, native American rights, nuclear testing, and other critical issues, with ruminations about H.D. Thoreau, John Muir, country music, landscape painters, and other intriguing topics. This is an excellent book about an important subject that will delight you if you let it.

1 out of 5 stars Savage Dreams.......2004-01-15

This book is classic eco paganistic 1/2 truths and full tripe. Solnit carries on a dreamy and irresponsible massive 'feel good' opinion piece about the handfull of people harmed by our successfull development of our deffensive nuclear weapons. The author fails to note that our development and limited use of our weapons saved millions of lives.
If you are currently a eco pagan, here is more for your religion. If you want a full account of the history of our deffensive development of nuecs, don't waste your time reading this novel. However, if you want further insight into the basis that drives our planet's new pagan eco religion, then this book will help you to understanding their factualy fictionist journey into politics.

5 out of 5 stars No romanticism here.......2000-02-06

Solnit's juxtaposition of the insidious nuclear poisoning of Nevada to the making of Yosemite National Park (that she shows has been "loved to death" since it was first discovered by whites more than 150 years ago)makes this book a must for all environmentalists. Solnit deals directly with themes of conquest and redemption in historic efforts to both tame and use these lands. Readers gain specific understanding about two places that are, after all, national icons. However, the deeper themes so well-developed in this book are being played out no less dramtically all across the country.

5 out of 5 stars Fielder.......2007-01-16

He's number one when it comes to capturing the beauty of Colorado. Awesome pics and some decent commentary.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain Masterpiece !.......2004-12-26

We have some nice mountain scenery here in New Zealand but never has it been showcased in a book of such class and quality as this one from Westcliffe. I do have two other books of Colorado from Fielder, "Colorado's CDT" and "To Walk In Wilderness" and I think about 4 of the photos look familiar out of the 200 or so in this book.
This is a large, heavy and classy book. The photos are generally full page, some double page, and are crystal clear with superb colouring and lighting. A page of text introduces each mountain range featured followed by the photos with interesting captions under each one but the emphasis is on the photos. The photos make you feel like you want to be in the scene enjoying what Fielder was obviously enjoying at the time too. The book retails at $75 but I consider it a bargain at Amazon's discounted price for what you are getting.
If you are a mountain lover like I am then this book is a must have. There has been and will be very few books like this ever published - thoroughly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A New Colorado Must-Have.......2004-12-16

Over the years, Fielder has taken many a spectacular photo. In John Fielder's new book, Mountain Ranges of Colorado, all of his greatest images over 15 years form a complete and comprehensive view of the reason for Colorado's trademark beauty: the Southern Rockies. The book not only goes range by range through the entire state, but presents some of the best images Fielder has ever done. A granite-feel cover, along with the photos, guarantees that there isn't a book like this out there, and there won't be unless Fielder does a sequel.

3 out of 5 stars Mountain Ranges of Colorado vs. Colorado: Moments in Time.......2004-11-02

A few years ago I wrote a review of "Colorado: 1870-2000" by John Fielder and "Colorado: Yesterday & Today" by Grant Collier. These two photographers both have new coffee table books out: Fielder published "Mountain Ranges of Colorado" and Collier published "Colorado: Moments in Time." These are two of the nicest color photography books published on Colorado in quite a while, so I thought I'd write another reviewing comparing the books of two of Colorado's best photographers. For the reasons listed below, I've concluded that Collier's new book is a little better than Fielder's.

1) Quality of photos: The photos in both of these books are very nice and really show how spectacular Colorado is. I think Collier does a better job compositionally, while Fielder's shots have a little better lighting and colors. My own complaint with Fielder's shots is that many of them have been published in previous books and calendars, so if you own any previous work by
Fielder, you may be disappointed to see the same photos published here. EDGE: Colorado: Moments in Time

2) Design & Appearance of Book: Fielder's book has a cool backdrop of granite and Collier's book has a nice backdrop of wavy sand. The interior of both books is also very well designed and the photos are nice and big. Fielder's book seems to be printed on somewhat cheaper paper, but the overall design is very comparable. EDGE: Even

3) Reputation of Photographers: John Fielder has published many books and is very well known, while Collier is a newer photographer, who is not yet as well known. EDGE: Mountain Ranges of Colorado

4) Written Text: In addition to taking the photos, both photographers wrote the text for their books. Collier is nearly as good a writer as he is a photographer. He wrote concise and very information essays on various aspects of the history of Colorado that really complemented the images in the book. Fielder text was not as well written, although it was an improvement on his previous attempts at writing. The text tends to ramble on and the writing style could use some improvement. But there is some good information in there if you look hard enough. EDGE: Colorado: Moments in Time.

Overall Vallue: Fielder's book has a retail value of $75, while Collier's book has a retail value of $45. Both books are very large. Fielder's is just a little bigger, but not much. So, even with the large discount that Amazon.com currently provides on Fielder's book, Colorado: Moments in Time is still priced lower. I therefore believe that it is, by a small margain, the best book and the best overall value.

      Book Description

Each time the waters of the mighty Mississippi River overflow their banks, questions arise anew about the battle between "man" and "river." How can we prevent floods and the damage they inflict while maintaining navigational potential and protecting the river's ecology?

The design of the Mississippi and how it should proceed has long been a subject of controversy. What is missing from the discussion, say the authors of this extraordinary book, is an understanding of the representations of the Mississippi River. Landscape architect Anuradha Mathur and architect/planner Dilip da Cunha draw together an array of perspectives on the river and show how these different images have played a role in the process of designing and containing the river landscape. Analyzing maps, hydrographs, working models, drawings, photographs, government and media reports, paintings, and even folklore, Mathur and da Cunha consider what these representations of the river portray, what they leave out, and why that might be. With gorgeous original silk screen prints and a fine selection of maps, the book joins historic, scientific, engineering, and natural views of the river to create an entirely new portrait of the great Mississippi.

Judith Larner Lowry, winner of the prestigious John Burroughs award, here builds on themes from her best-selling Gardening with a Wild Heart, which introduced restoration gardening as a new way of thinking about land and people. Drawing on her experiences in her own garden, Lowry offers guidance on how to plan a garden with birds, plants, and insects in mind; how to shape it with trees and shrubs, paths and trails, ponds, and other features; and how to cultivate, maintain, and harvest seeds and food from a diverse array of native annuals and perennials. Working in passionate collaboration with the scrub jays, quail, ants, and deer who visit her garden, and inspired by other gardeners, including some of the women pioneers of native plant horticulture, Lowry shares the delights of creating site-specific, ever-changing gardens that can help us better understand our place in the natural world.

Photography has always been an outlet to certain visionaries in our society. Giving them a way to express to others the way they interpret somewhat ordinary and sometimes not so ordinary sights. This collection of images inspires all those who look at them. And then combining these with words of inspiratin and thought provoking prose makes it a treat to the soul as well as the eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for nature and environmental photography collections.......2005-12-10

Great Sand Dunes National Park: Between Light And Shadow is a collection of essays and photographs by Boulder, Colorado-based nature photographer John B. Weller and showcases the landscapes of the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The truly breathtaking, full-color images of sand dunes, tracks, and wildlife are perfectly complemented by the brief reflective pieces describing the author's journey and experiences. Great Sand Dunes National Park reveals captivating beauty amid shifting sands and seasons; it is exceptionally easy to lose oneself in the panoramic interplays of light, shadow, sand, and natural life. A "must-have" for nature and environmental photography collections.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photography - Remarkable Journey.......2004-10-21

The first thing that struck me about this book was the depth of Weller's exploration of Great Sand Dunes National Park. His images feature all seasons, a wide variety of subjects, and capture the many moods and emotions of this national treasure. As you delve into the book and read Weller's essays, he takes you on a virtual journey through the wilderness of the park - you can practically feel the sand in your fingernails and eyes; feel the rain of a summer storm; and step out of your home into an entirely different world. I highly recommend this book, both for its photography, and for Weller's writing.
