As any woodworker knows, working with properly sharpened tools makes even the rank amateur a better woodworker almost instantly. Kirby has taken a step-by-step approach to showing the reader in explicit detail how to keep common workshop tools perfectly sharp: exactly how to hold the tools, where and how to stand, and how to move. Extremely well illustrated and indexed, this is a new workshop classic and should find its way into any serious woodworker's (or even not so serious hobbyist's) library. --Mark Hetts
Book Description
Steps for putting perfect edges on planes, chisels, knives, and carving tools.
Customer Reviews:
Sharpening this way works, it's quick and it's almost fun.......2006-12-14
One of the unfortunate facts about cutting tools is that they need to have a sharp edge to work well but using them takes away that edge. This is a wonderful little book by an expert woodworker explaining how he puts back the edge quickly so he can go back to work right away. It describes every detail including inconvertible facts as well as the author's many opinions. It's a complete system; it doesn't leave out any steps. Even though not every technique is useful to me I wouldn't leave anything out because that would inevitably leave out techniques that were useful.
With the help of this book I learned to hand sharpen chisels and plane irons. (I didn't try setting up a grinder the way he suggests.) Rather than trust my skill completely I used a honing guide from Lee Valley. I spent a very pleasant summer afternoon in the backyard learning how to sharpen with waterstones, a stack of dull chisels and plane irons, a bucket of water and a yapping puppy. I got wet and the yard got messy but I don't think anybody minded. A very rewarding afternoon, except when the puppy ran off with one of the pages. I don't know if the chisels came out sharp enough to shave with but they slice softwood like butter.
This book does an excellent job as a teacher for three reasons: It is written by somebody who knows what he is doing. It explains all the steps clearly and it doesn't leave out any. And I came out of the process fairly skillful at something I didn't know how to do before.
Kirby knows.......2005-12-20
This book will disappoint you if you don't buy it with the right frame of reference. It isn't a chatty book that starts out with pictures of a trip to a Japanese quarry, etc... Nor is it a dithering book that gives you every method know to man to do something. Nor is it a book by a master Japanese woodworker with a real understanding of waterstones. This series of books is designed to give in-depth coverage of one person's way of doing one thing.
So if you have no interest in taking a master's advice, and just want to be entertained, not the best read. But if you want a practical and fast way of getting your tools to the level of a master studio craftsman and teacher, then this is a possible path.
A lot of top craftsmen, at least those who write etc... actually do a lot of tool reviewing, promoting and such. So it is natural to fall into the assumption that expert craftsman have a thousand opinions about tools with no fixed technical adress. Really good workers, find something that works, and then get on with the work.
Kirby mostly wrote for Fine Woodworking when it wasn't a magazine that catered to beginers
60 seconds?.......2002-03-07
Here's the whole book- Buy a grinder. Sharpen your blade. Use a waterstone, and make it sharper. Here's some illustrations.
Not very helpful. It didn't really cover anything for amatuers, but it didn't give much to a pro either. 2/3rds of the book is his view on how to set up a bench grinder.
Not the least bit dull.........2002-02-28
If you want sharp tools and don't give two hoots about all the theory and gab most books offer on the subject, this is a good read. The text is clear and the drawings are very useful. Plain and simple, it guides you toward all it takes to get your chisels and plane blades sharp and keep them that way.
Not bad..........2001-11-26
I purchased this book to learn to get a keen edge on my tools in a minimum amount of time. This book offers a number of good pointers, although much of the advice is also to be taken with a grain of salt (the uselessness of sharpening guides, for example). Overall, a good book. The size and readability make it perfect for the workshop shelf as opposed to the office library.

The small world of the Fisher folk is drying up. The water in their green pond is lower every day, and the stream that feeds it has shrunk to a trickle. Young Tad (short for Tadpole) and his little sister, Birdie, set out with their father, Pondleweed, on a journey upstream to find the cause of this disastrous Drying Time, at the beginning of a quest that will lead them into strange adventures and terrible danger. When Pondleweed is enticed by mysterious music into drowning himself in a sinister black pool, the children take refuge with a wizened dryad, who helps Tad to realize that he has been given a magical gift that will help him save the Fishers and the other two tribes who make up the world, but not without sacrifice and terror.
This delightful miniature heroic fantasy is beautifully realized, from the details of the Fisher's tiny domestic arrangements to the eerie echoes of classical mythology. Rebecca Rupp has created a satisfyingly complete world, with its water-oriented Fishers, gypsy Hunters, and furry Diggers, overseen by the tree spirit Dryads, the earth spirit Kobolds, and the water spirit Nixies, all subject to the majestic Great Rune and the death-owl Obd. Despite his heroic role, Tad is a real boy, and that and the antics of his comical watchfrog, Pippit, keep this charming tale from becoming too solemn. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
"The well-crafted tale and careful attention to detail will have young readers forgetting that the characters are only a few inches tall. . . . An amazing journey of surprising proportions." —KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred review)
The world is drying. Twelve-year-old Tad — who is only a few inches tall — doesn’t even notice it at first. Busy practicing with his new spear, arguing with his sister, Birdie, and living the normal life of a youngling of the Fisher Tribe, he thinks little of a stream slowed to a trickle here, a pond suddenly dwindling there. But Tad begins to have strange flashbacks — glimpses of the past that he knows can't possibly be his own. With these "rememberings" haunting him, he and Birdie begin an adventure marked by great sorrows, fierce battles, and unbreakable friendships. In this remarkable rite of passage, Tad grows to know who he really is and what his destiny holds. For only he can restore the water and save the forests and animals and Tribes.
Only he can retrieve the Waterstone.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and remarkable.......2007-06-27
When I read this book several years ago, I remember it being the first book in a long, long time to keep me up past midnight. It was the first book in a very long time to perfectly capture in a few words all the emotions that I was feeling and put it into the main character. It was the first book I read in a while that could do what all great books do -- make your heart swell and break and heal -- all in a few pages. Some of the scenes and dialogue ring in your mind long after you put the book away, and finally you just have to read it again, to re-experience it all.
When Tad's spear flies to the bottom of a pond and Tad goes after it, the last thing he expects is to meet a water-spirit there, Azabel. But this meeting is but the first of strange things, because slowly but surely the water supply of the Fisher tribe is drying up. When Tad, his father Pondleweed and his sister Birdie go to investigate the cause, they find something terrible has happened to the lake that was once their water-source: it is black and dammed up. Pondleweed is drawn into the water by a strange song, and doesn't return. Tad and Birdie are left alone.
Fighting back the memories-that-aren't that are growing ever stranger and more disturbing, Tad has to discover what has happened to the water. He must make allies with everyone from weasels (Not slaves!) to the different Tribes of Diggers and Hunters, and unite them all for the dangers to come. Tad must discover his own identity and destiny as the Sagamore of legend. Most importantly, they must retrieve the Waterstone in order to save the tribes -- and the world -- from certain destruction.
But nothing ever comes without a price...and sometimes the price is too painful to imagine.

this is the best book ive ever read. If you like fiction you should really read this book. this book is really great try reading it and youl love it trust me i loved it so you probobly will to.
The Best of the Best.......2005-12-31
This delightful book was - and yet is - the best piece of children's fantasy I have ever read. And I have read A LOT of children's fantasy (Cooper, McKillip, McKinley, Hunter, Jacques, Lewis, Rowling, White, Banks, O'Brien, Weis and Hickman, Pullamn, Paolini, etc., and many of these authors I would NOT recommend.) But I cannot say enough to recommend this outstanding author and her work.
First, unlike others who could not put this book down, I was so captivated by Rebecca Rupp's colorful, miniature world and its sensitive, hilarious characters that I read the story as sloooooowwwwly as possible, often relishing favorite passages multiple times before moving on.
Inspired by an imaginary nature God (named Pondleweed) that the author's son created as a child, this is the tale of a young Fisher boy (a pixie-ish and frog-like tribe of tiny people) who discovers a wonderful gift, and embraces the responsibility that gift entails to recover the Waterstone from the evil Nixies (water sprites.) The nature of the hopes, dreams, fears, frustrations, and challenges of Tad, Birdie and the others they meet and journey with will prove entirely recognizable to any child, as well as any adult who remembers struggling through childhood. Especially wonderful are Rupp's detailed portraits of the Fisher/Hunter/Digger Tribes and their cultures. Her interpretations of various forest animals, in particular the hawk with his hunting song and the weasels with their "earth-soft minds" provide some of the best moments in the story, effectively counteracting the otherwise heart-wrenching features.
With its rich language and vivid imgery, the text is intelligent enough to capture any adult reader's imagination without threatening a young reader's confidence. The plot is easy to follow, yet complex enough to keep the reader guessing until the end, and the climax is enough to touch any but the most hardened souls (yes, I cried and cried and cried, but how noble the sacrifice. That is all I can say.)
Though I did not want this story to end, it left me with a tidy conclusion and a necessary (although bittersweet) sense of security, which is essential to any child's world. Alas, all will be well with the Fishers, Hunters, and Diggers from now on (unless there is a sequal....) But, for now, how privileged we are to have such upstanding, quality writing at our fingertips. With originality and style so perfectly complete, Rupp's work is completely perfect.
What Can I Say?.......2005-12-28
There are a few books and serieses -- Harry Potter; Narnia; The Dark Is Rising; Inheritance Trilogy; Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher; Beyond the Valley of Thorns; Lord of the Rings -- that really touch me and keep me on the edge of my seat. The Waterstone has now been added to that list of greats.
I stayed up all night to finish this book. I loved the end, it was so dramatic and heartwrenching -- both when Pondleweed dies and Tad is calling all the creatures, I don't know why. It was practically flawless, I thought, and I'm almost afraid to look for the author's other book, because this one was just so GOOD.
The Book.......2004-05-05
The WaterStone
Tad, a boy of a fisher tribe is really worried about his village and his family. After he had almost drowned in the lake he has been hearing strange voices. And if that's not enough to keep him worried the lake is drying up any way. So his father, Pondleweed and his sister Birdie (RedBird) go out into the world to see why the lake drying up when it shouldn't. When the 3 of them go out into then world they meet some troubles but they can get through it. One of the troubles was, they met another tribe and they wanted to capture Tad as a prisoner they put him in a dungeon, but later he escaped. I would recommend this book for people that like adventure and for people who like to fit clues together.

Colorful, picturesque and wholesome approach to teamwork........1997-12-08
This book is geared toward the 4-8 year old set and accomplishes its task nicely through realistic, colorful pictures and concise text. While reading the book, I found the progression of the story lends itself beautifully to sequence. In addition, as soon as the students realize one animal is following the next, it's easy to ask them to make predictions as to what animal they think will appear next. As the story reaches its ending, you realize that there is a moral to this story as well---working together as a team can solve problems faster than working alone. The story and the match of the illustrations to the story make it an excellent picture book to use when teaching sequence, prediction, social skills or values. It would make a nice contribution to the literature in a unit about farm animals, grandchildren or cooperation.
I have a new game to play with my son........1997-10-24
I read the story to my 6 year old son, and now when I try to tuck him in at night, he "hides" under his blanket and makes me guess where he is. It gives us one more game to play in the evenings, and is creating some good memories for the both of us. He can't wait to pull this on his own Grandma when we visit her this Thanksgiving.
A great find for a preschooler.......1997-09-17
Who's Under Grandma's Quilt? Is full of fun and subtleteaching. We don't know who is under there until the end, but a littlechild will wonder right away as a helpful chick wants to lift it and see, an anxious pig says " You better not" and other animals express a range of reactions for a child to ponder. "Whom are you talking to under grandmother's quilt?" says a goose. Rachel Waterstone has toughtfully written a wonderful book for children from two to five. It is original at the same time that it uses a traditional Chicken Little, or Braemer town Musicians line of animals to move the story forward. First Story Press has chosen illustrator Virginia Esquinaldo with the same good taste as they chose this first time author. Congratulations and thank you to all of them. This book is a great choice for young children.
A Very Enjoyable Read.......1997-09-05
The "quilt with a bump and a lump that thumped" phrase is very catchy and something I'm sure kids of all ages will remember. The author has a unique writing style that flows naturally and suggests the personality of the characters nicely. I could almost hear the different voices saying the lines as I read it

Book Description
Kimberly Kirberger, co-author of the best-selling CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE TEENAGE SOUL books and a renowned expert on teen issues, addresses the topic of body image in LOVING YOUR BODY / LOVING YOURSELF. Many problems in girls' lives stem from a lack of self-esteem and self-love: eating disorders, depression, drug use, and more. Through powerful stories and poems from real teens, as well as personal tales and advice from the author, this book strives to help girls learn to accept, love, and appreciate their bodies--and, in turn, to love themselves.
Customer Reviews:
No Body's Perfect.......2006-01-11
I read the book No Body's Perfect. It was written by Kimberly Kirberger. It's written about teens and struggles with their everyday life, including eating disorders, boys, and learning who to hang-out with and who not to hang-out with.
This book gets points across to you, for example, "Accepting yourself just the way you are may seem like a pretty big challenge. It may even seem impossible. But it's not." This is one of the great quotes in this book.
This book would be very helpful and influential to teenagers struggling with these problems. I recommend this book to 12- 18 year- old girls. You will love this book!
Insightful and very helpful.......2005-03-27
I will admit; I have been struggling with body image and "looks" for about as long as I can remember. This book by Kimberly Kirberger helps me to realize that no body is perfect, and that you need to embrace what you look like and have. If you can totally accept yourself the way you are, then you are on your way to success.
After reading this book, I came to realize, and "saw the light" so to speak, about body image, self acceptance, and the search for my identity. I definently think that this book was very helpful in helping me to overcome the "stereotype" that you have to be 105 pounds to be considered beautiful. Now I know that I am perfect in every aspect of my life, and I now love and accept who I am inside...and who I am inside is all that really matters.
I definently strongly encourage those girls who are currently struggling with self acceptance, body image, and the search of who they are, to read this book, and also fill out the Nobody's Perfect Journal as well. This book is very helpful, and insightful, and it will get you back on the right track in life, and make you realize that life isn't all about looks and popularity...rather, it is a journey to love and acccept yourself for who you are!
This is an awsome book!.......2004-04-01
This book tought me everything a girl sturgels with and how to fix the problems! Every one should buy this book. It shows you how to handle your problems without exploding over every little thing. There are so many stories about girls who have had problems that i face in life and i learn from them mistakes instead of making them again. This book is the best book i have ever read. It talks about everything... including the serch for you intersoul and inner bueaty... ( seeing whats on the inside that counts) this book it tottaly worth your money!
Awesome!.......2003-09-23
This book is my bible! i love it to death. It shows you simple things you forget back into the light and can truly change the way you think about yourself. It makes you realise that you're not alone out there with either eating disorders, abusive relationships, heart aches, suicides, or any situations that are hard to held with emotionally and physically. I've never really got into the chicken books myself, but this book took only a second to love it! i recommand this book to everyone!
A disapointment.......2003-08-07
Well, I love the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books, which are coathured by Kimberly Kirberger, and so when I saw this book I lept at the chance to buy it. But I felt a bit let down; I think the Chicken Soup books were MUCH better. This book is filled with input and advice from Kirberger that at times seem too fake to actually appreciate. Yes, some advice is actually helpful, but I found myself gritting my teeth at the near cheesiness of Kirberger's words... I want to read OTHER people's stories, not Kirberger's souped up advice that isn't very original in the first place--most stuff I've heard time and time again.
AND... This book is pretty narrow-minded. Basically all of it is about weight problems. Either, the person was insecure because they couldn't stop eating, or they were fat and stopped eating all together. I can't really relate, because I'm UNDERweight and always hoping and wishing that I will gain some pounds. All these girls are blah blah crying about how fat they are... but not everyone is fat, what about them? They still have insecurities that need looking at.
Some of the stories were interesting, all by someone other than Kirberger. This book focuses on too much of the same thing though and I skipped a lot of Kirberger's blah pages. If you're an OVERweight teen and need comforting, go ahead and read this. If not, skip this book and try a chicken soup one.
