Book Description
Hungry Hollow is simply an ordinary creek winding through about a mile of ordinary forest and meadow somewhere east of the Rocky Mountains. But like all such places, it is also a vast and intricate web of life with extensions that reach around the planet, back into prehistoric time, and within to a teeming, bizarre microscopic world. In dozens of short, wonderfully imaginative chapters, A.K. Dewdney introduces us to the denizens of this world. We encounter a hackberry tree whose branches perfectly reproduce the taxonomic Tree of Life, learn how it would look and feel to shrink by stages to the size of an amoeba while swimming in a river, watch a toad win the lottery, and see the world of Hungry Hollow from the viewpoint of bears, earthworms, and even stones. This is an excursion into natural history like no other.
Customer Reviews:
Really stuck with me........2003-07-09
I read this wonderful book about a year ago, and I've thought back on it regularly since then. It's as beautiful and sad as it is educational. Even those of us who love nature often have trouble letting go of our human perspective on everything we see. This book helps to bring other perspectives into view: what might your world look like (and feel like) if you were a raccoon? A tree? A blade of grass? A microorganism? As you read, each living thing begins to seem more real, more substantial, and you realize that there is a universe of life even in a small plot of land. "Hungry Hollow" is also a rare combination of science fact and fictional narrative, so that the things you learn stick with you at an emotional level. The book deepened my understanding of the world, and I'm grateful.

Tear.......2007-03-15
The book is great but slow paced. The ending has a real tear jerking moment. All together a very good book.
Clearly On The Mark!.......2006-08-28
This is my third novel by Mark Roeder. All three of the novels I have read are a part of the Gay Youth Chronicles. Additionally, I read "The Soccer Field Is Empty" and "A Better Place" (see my reviews). Ideally you should read the Chronicles in the order they were written. This story tells us of the struggle to deal with ones sexuality. As a man who dealt with these issues many years ago I can testify to the fact that Mr. Roeder is clearly on the mark in his writing about the experience. Throughout the novel there is a sub-plot whereas someone is leaving threatening notes to the main character, Ethan. This makes for a real page turner as the reader is anxious to see from where these threats originate. I am anxious to get a hold of the next novel in the series "The Summer of My Discontent". I highly recommend "Someone Is Watching" you most absolutely will not be disappointed!
Repetitive.......2005-06-10
While I accept it does portrait quite well the anguish of a boy discovering he is gay and of unrequited love, the prose is absolutely inmature, simplistic in a way that could be acceptable in dialogue(which arent any better) but not in a character that age that is writting. It cannot be excused as the flow of the boy`s conscience either.
The repetitions of ideas, specially inconsequential ideas with the EXACTLY same words makes it tiresome. Also, there arent any hints for the reader to discover the "someone" before the main character does, which is un unforgivable flaw in a mistery novel. Especially considering all the rest of it is quite easy to predict.
The descriptions are, for lack of a better word, corny. The main character starts acting all manly but later suddenly changes his attitude in rather unbeliable way for a boy that age.
I would be way more forgiving if I hadnt payed for it.
An improvement over his first book.......2005-03-26
If nothing else, the slimmer page-count in this volume made it a much quicker read than his previous book "The Soccer Field Is Empty." The dialogue was still more than a little stilted, and some of the amazing deus ex machinas lead me to roll my eyes.
As with his pervious novel, Mr. Roeder clearly has a great deal of affection for his characters and the idealized world they inhabit. But with any author attempting to publish his own work, the affection can be a bit of detriment.
With that said, I do admire Mr. Roeder's chutzpah evidence in creating this world and sticking with it.
Decent book for the beach or an airplane, but not high art.
a great read.......2003-04-05
Mr. Roeder has once again given us a view into the mind of a teen-ager who is coming to grips with the reality of who he is. One of Mark's gifts is his ability to write his novels in the style that teen-agers think. You can really believe that you've picked up the journal of a 16 year old boy who has confided his innermost thoughts and feelings to you.
An essential part of Mark's great series, "Gay Youth Chronicles", be sure to add this one to your reading list.

Customer Reviews:
very informative.......2005-11-24
Most people don't fully understand how damaging ID theft can be. This book has lots of great examples and stories about ID theft that teaches us the different ways it can disrupt our lives. Until reading this book I, like most people, only thought of ID theft as credit card theft. I now know its much more. I have been selling ID theft protection for the past year, and I purchased this book to get a better understanding of the crime. I have to say it was a real eye opener about this crime and gave me a better appreciation for the ID protection service I sell.
Comprehensive Analysis of ID Theft.......2003-12-13
Wow! What a comprehensive collection of the many chilling ways a person can have their ID stolen. Lots of real life stories. Until I read this book, I was unaware of the vast number of ways my family or I could be victimized. It is now very clear to me that I not only need to watch what I do with my credit card receipts, shredding of my confidential paperwork, and not using my mail box to send/receive bills/payments, but I need to continually monitor (or have monitored) my credit and financial records. My ID can be so easily stolen (or bought) that I might not know it until the police show up to arrest me.

In one fleeting, sickening moment, the Bartons' precious 3-year-old girl, Molly, disappears, and judging from the coloring book floating down by the dock, she is lost forever to the river. One evening, about three months after "the Incident," 13-year-old Chris Barton watches the family-vacation video he made in the last hours of Molly's life. Clues in the background--including the appearance of a white ice-cream truck--don't add up, and Chris becomes convinced his sister is still alive. With the help of his best friend, Pat, he sets out to track her down, despite his parents' grief-weary refusal to even consider the possibility that little Molly is anywhere but in the river. What follows is a riveting journey, where the boys are on their own in a heroic, terrifying, nail-biting adventure. The events that unfold in this suspenseful mystery will have kids reading under the covers with a flashlight well into the night. Fans of David Patneaude's Someone Was Watching won't want to miss his other books, The Last Man's Reward and Dark Starry Morning. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson
Customer Reviews:
Great mystery.......2007-02-13
I read this book when I was in college...my mother had brought it home from the elementary school she worked in. I stayed up ALL NIGHT reading just so I could finish...it even brought tears to my eyes. I loved it so much that I finally asked for my own copy after grad school just so I could read it againa and again and again. A great mystery for children and families.
Someone Was Watching By David Patneaude.......2007-01-22
The story starts off when the main character Chris and his Parents return to their summerhouse where Molly, Chris' sister had disappeared three months before. Everybody thought she was dead, but Chris believed she was still alive. Chris and his best friend, Pat, went on an adventure to find her. They bought plane tickets and flew to Florida because they thought kidnappers took her there.
The book was very exciting because I couldn't wait until they found Molly. I felt like I was in the book because the author used a lot of detail and described how the characters felt and acted. The main conflict interested me because I love mysteries and the mystery in this book is when they are trying to find Molly, and that was my favorite part of the book. The characters seemed realistic because they had the same personalities as my friends and me. The book's ending was very satisfying because they ended up finding Molly, proved to their parents that she was still alive, and became a family again
The author has a third person voice in this book. I didn't think that the book had interesting vocabulary because I didn't have to look up any unfamiliar words in the dictionary. I thought there were a lot of unique characteristics. For example, I was able to picture the story in my head because the author used his adjectives well, and I also couldn't put the book down because I was so exited to find out what was going to happen next. The author used good dialogue because it was believable. For example the words that the boys said sounded like the words real thirteen year-olds would say. I personally think that the author has a good skill in making ideas for a mystery book.
I would rate this book a nine out of ten with ten being the highest and zero being the lowest. I think this book is the best book I have ever read. I love this book because it's a mystery and as I said before mysteries are my favorite kind of books to read. They're my favorite books to read because you never know what's going to happen next. I would highly recommend this book because you'll learn a useful lesson to never give up.
The book was interesting because it has a criminal type subject. This made the book exciting because there were lots of things to worry about. You didn't know what was going to happen to Molly. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope to find another mystery as good as this one for the next book report!
I love this book.......2006-08-15
I was always a big reader and picked this book up at the library when I was in elementary or middle school. Now I am 23, and I liked this book so much back then that every once in a while I look it up and read it again. As I get older I recognize some problems with it, but I still love it for how it totally captured me as a kid. It's a great book. Get it for your kids or for you!
Someone was watching.......2005-10-28
Genre:Mystery
Three sentence summary:The family went to the beach during their school break. The problem is that not everyone came back home, but luckly Chris had his video camera tape from the day of the accident and found out what happened to molly.
What I liked most about this book:I like how it left you in suspence while reading.
What I didn't like about this book: How at first the family wouldn't talk to eachother after the accident occured and were planning to sell the beach house thinking that everything about Molly would go away.
My Favorite character and why: Chris is my favorite character. He is my favorite character because he is a very loving and caring older brother.
The scene, Line, or passage that meant something to me and why(page #):"Dad! Mom!" He shouted, straggering toward them. They were awake , sitting up, looking at him with bewildered eyes. " Where's Molly?" He yelled at them.(pg.12). This passage to me showed how much Molly meant to Chris.
What I would say about this book to someone else: The book Someone was Watching is a great book because it has tons of emotion while it being a mystery.
One Question I have after reading this book: What was the Secret Clover Whispering in Molly's ear?
My strongest reason for recommending this book: For all of the love that comes after three months, and how a death can bring the family together.
Plotholes.......2005-08-25
I read this book in 6th grade. It's pretty well written, but I remember there being a lack of motive behind the culprit's actions. That's what ruined the book for me.

Book Description
Five-year-old James Merritt lies in a hospital bed--the sixth victim in a series of accidents plaguing a peaceful Connecticut community. 'Maybe if he pretends to be asleep, the shadow man will go away. He sees the glint of the needle. The pain does not alarm him. In his wildest imagining, he has never dreamed death would come in such a tiny, innocent way.' Cinnie Merritt holds her son's limp and weightless hand, trying to explain away the injuries that don't add up, the strange medical reactions, the nonsense words he keeps repeating, the shattering sense of foreboding. Something is wrong. Something is very, very wrong. 'Please let my baby be all right. Please let him wake up and be fine.' At night, a stalking figure makes its silent way into the hospital room.
'You belong to me now, child of my salvation. Wellspring of health and healing. Sweet servant of the dark moon. From the dark corner of a mother's world nightmare . . .Someone's Watching.

How bad can it get?.......2003-06-20
I've read several other Judith Kelman books. They aren't the best written books I've read, but I enjoyed the stories. This one, however, is BAD!!! The story line is stupid beyond belief. I finished reading it because I kept thinking that it had to get better, but it never did. It will be some time before I have the nerve to take a chance on another Kelman book.
I totally disagree.......2001-07-02
I'm amazed at the other reviews! This is the first book I have read by this author - and it doesn't inspire me to dip into other works. Ridiculous story line, full of unbelievable events with unconvincing "hero". 342 pages of silly drivel. A waste of time and money
PULL UP A CHAIR AND READ A WHILE.......2000-08-25
James Merritt, the protagonist of this story is a very bright, appealling child. At 5, he is well versed in musical terminology as his father was a musician. James' parents are divorced and James copes with that issue alongside of starting school "as a big kid." He has his share of obstacles, one of them in the form a very strange peer called "Odd Todd" by other kids. "Odd Todd" comes from a weird household and one quickly learns where the boy's eccentricities originated.
James is struck by a reckless driver. However, this was no accident and as James fights for his life in the hospital, the shady issues surrounding his near miss are brought to light.
This was truly a good book. I certainly hope James makes another appearance in a Judith Kelman book.
VERY GOOD STORY.......1998-03-01
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS ONE, AND I WOULD GIVE IT A 10, BUT IT HAS A CERTAIN RESEMBLANCE TO MARY HIGGINS CLARK'S BOOK, A STRANGER IS WATCHING. THEY ARE BOTH WELL WORTH READING ON THEIR OWN MERITS AND I RECOMMEND YOU TRY BOTH TITLES.
