Customer Reviews:
Great Info. on the Endless Mountains.......2005-08-11
The book is well written and provides good information for the hiker enthusiast. However, better maps, possibly topographic type from quads. and photographs, that would entice the hiker, would make this a five star book. It's good to see a book written about this area of Pennsylvania, which is truley a hidden treasure!
A great hiking book for PA.......2003-06-24
This is a great book. It tells about some great hikes in central and northeast PA and gives all the great features about each hike.

Book Description
Children's Books in Children's Hands offers a comprehensive approach to teaching children's literature by providing appropriate depth, and using full-color illustrations from outstanding children's books. Unlike books that simply describe a great many children's books, this book takes the reader inside the workings of children's literature, focusing on ways literature elicits responses from young readers, genre by genre and book by book. The book also provides a full range of thoughtful and practical suggestions for sharing and exploring literature with children. Thus, there is a natural connection between the presentation and exploration of good books for children (including more than 2,000 annotations), and the rich repertoire of reader-response- based techniques. This connection prepares the reader not only to choose good literary works for children, but to understand their dynamics and be able to engage young readers in them. Elementary educators, and parents.
Customer Reviews:
Children's Literature for Adults.......2001-05-02
This book offers indepth information about a variety of topics concerning childrens literature. In the first chapters it focuses on the development of children and their perceptions of literature at different ages. It then informs the reader about the historical development of children's literature. The biggest part of the book, however, is about the different genres of literature available. What I liked about this book was that it offered many examples and reading samples. It also included several essays from children book authors who wrote about their profession. The teaching aids and the recommended reading at the end of each chapter proved helpful. However, some areas of this book, such as this one, are only helpful to people interested in child education as a profession.

The first day of ninth grade is looming, and Alice is anxious. "When I think of all the embarrassing things I'll probably do, all the humiliating stuff just waiting to happen..." she laments to her big brother Lester. Luckily, Alice has the undying love of her perfect boyfriend, Patrick--or does she? There's a perky new girl in town, and Patrick doesn't seem to mind her attentions at all. Plus, with all the activities of high school, such as reporting on the newspaper, homework, friends--not to mention Alice's weekend job, her concerns over her father's love life, and her friend Elizabeth's shocking revelation--Alice may not be spending as much time as she'd like with her beau.
In the thirteenth title of her popular Alice series (The Grooming of Alice, Alice on the Outside, and Alice in April, etc.), Phyllis Reynolds Naylor deals sensitively and humorously with the painful blow just about every teenager receives sooner or later: the first heartbreak. Multiple side stories thicken the plot, as when kindhearted but misguided Alice invites three female ex-cons to Thanksgiving dinner... and neglects to tell her dad and brother. Alice is, as always, funny, strong, and yet vulnerable; adolescent readers will definitely relate to her as her self-confidence rises and falls with every passing day. (Ages 12 to 15) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Breaking up is hard to do
Alice is starting high school, and everything is new. But it's the new girl, Penny, who's making ninth grade a real challenge for Alice. Penny is tiny and perky and a real flirt, and she seems to be focusing her attention Patrick. Even worse, Patrick seems to be enjoying it.
Alice and Patrick have been a couple so long Alice can't imagine life without him. Suddenly she feels lost and unattractive and scared -- not quite whole. How can Alice get back her confidence in herself, when she's not even sure who she is?
Customer Reviews:
Who can't relate to Alice?.......2006-12-12
Having had her adoring boyfriend Patrick in her life since sixth grade, 14-year-old Alice isn't quite sure how she might function without him. But after he meets cute, perky Penny the summer before ninth grade, Patrick seems smitten by the idea of a girl that isn't Alice.
Still, Alice is nothing but a girl who won't grasp life's challenges and move on...outwardly, at least. On Thanksgiving, she decides to take her mind off Patrick by extending the family home to three female "refugees," who turn out to be anything but.
No matter what happens, Alice knows she's got her dad Ben and her older brother Lester -- they've been there for her ever since her mom died when she was four. And with her best friends, Elizabeth and Pamela, Alice knows she can tackle whatever life throws at her...
Naylor does it again........2006-05-31
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has mastered the art of speaking in the utterly believable voice of a teenage girl. Thirteenth in the ever-popular Alice series, Alice Alone finds our heroine, Alice McKinley, beginning high school as a ninth grader, and on the verge of a break-up with her boyfriend Patrick. Although she wins tremendous cool points with her class by persuading her dad to let her host a co-ed sleepover, hosted by her long-suffering brother Lester, it won't carry enough weight to keep her from self-doubt in the wake of the break-up.
Alice Alone will strike a note with anyone who remembers the never-ending drama of the teenage years and the disintegration of their first encounter with love. For the true teens among the readership, it may feel even closer to home. Alice puts on a good example for her loyal followers behind the fourth wall by putting on a resolute face and busying herself with school activities.
In the background, other characters of the series get some action. Lester's ex-girlfriend reappears as a new hire of his father's shop. Dad is crossed in love by the reappearance of another ex--that of his fiancée, Sylvia. For Thanksgiving dinner, Alice invites some veterans of the local county correctional facility, and hi-jinks ensue. On a sadder note, one of Alice's long-time friends admits that she was molested as a child.
As always, Naylor's voice is refreshing, honest, and true. One would not be surprised to learn that Alice was alive, well, and attending a typically angst-ridden high school somewhere in Maryland. There is enough mildly racy detail here to make the young reader feel saucy for the content, but the tone is kept lightly serious and nothing is inserted gratuitously. However, this may be enough to torque off some controversy among those who would prefer to whitewash a library. It is more appropriately housed in the young adult section, based on the subject matter, but there is nothing within that is immoral or trashy. The young adults at which the series is aimed will relate, empathize, and perhaps even learn a lesson or two along the way.
A teenage favorite.......2006-05-21
Reading this book reminded me of how much I LOVED reading Nancy Drew books as a kid. I could not read them fast enough. When I tried to read one recently as an adult I found I could not make my eyes advance from one word to the next.
Similarly, the adult in me finds Alice's self-absorption a little hard to take but that is what makes it a perfect read for those young readers who are experiencing the daily ups and downs of teenagerhood. They identify with her happy moments and the tragedies in her life.
As the Alice books are continual targets of censors I confess I read the book partially as a defense attorney getting ready to defend a client.
Alice Alone begins as Alice's starts her 9th grade year, her first yeaer in high school.
As a grown-up, my heart went out to her father when he agrees to a co-ed sleepover at their home. He is trying to be a supportive but responsible single parent as Alice's mother is no longer living. The kids are well behaved and things go very well.
Alice is a conscientious student. She struggles in algebra but forgoes a trip to the movies so she can complete her homework and studying. She is compassionate and cares about her family and her friends. She reaches out to people in need at Thanksgiving and ends up inviting 3 ex-cons to dinner.
Naylor addresses the subject of child abuse when Alice's good friend Elizabeth shares a secret she has carried since she was eight years old. With her friends encouragement, Elizabeth tells her parents and she gets help. Naylor handles the subject honestly and demonstrates that help is available. The novel offers the hope and promise of recovery.
A parent's review.......2005-07-17
This is the third Alice book I've read, and so far, it's the one I enjoyed the most. Even though it's been a long time since I was fourteen, I really felt Alice's emotions and confusion over the problems with her boyfriend Patrick.
As with the other Alice books, there is always some content that parents might want to review before they allow their child to read it. Particularly if their child is younger than 14. However, I thought that this book handled that kind of content well and gave good advice, advice that might indeed be significant to some readers.
Alice is becoming more thoughtful in this book and I liked that. It's not only age-appropriate, but also thought-provoking for the readers.
ok.......2005-05-20
this book was ok, the first half was good, but the second half was boring, overall it was an OK book. :D

e Intimacy of Inspiration.......2007-02-12
I first saw a picture or two on some program to download desktop photos. I followed some info cuz I was captivated by the Alice pictures. I discovered Robyn's journey, story and this story book. I considered buying a used one, but decided to get a new one. I just love the whole of it and so appreciate the author not only taking the journey but sharing it with the rest of us. Even if some of the sharing was against her original plans. Thanks Robyn. Your journey touches deeply in inexplicable ways.
Inspirational and Engaging Account.......2006-07-09
Although large in size, and filled with breathtaking photographs, this book includes so much more than the regular "picture book". Robyn's thoughtful words make you feel as if you are traveling right along with her and her famous camels. The story is engaging and heart-wrenching; and the reader runs through the same emotions that Robyn feels at each leg of the journey, from the tragedy of loss to the jubilation of completion.
Beautiful and introspective - and very highly recommended.
Lovely, lovely book.......2004-11-25
The combination is a winner because of:
* the stunning page and a half photo spreads of Australian desert and scenes showing Robyn's trek with the camels
* engaging narration by Robyn that shows you the beauty, fear, boredom, and other feelings that accompany her on the months of solitude crossing 1700 miles of outback Australia
The photographer represented National Geographic, and the photos have that look the magazine readers expect. Interesting panoramas, the light playing on the spinifex, the wrinkled face of an Aboriginal tracker, the otherworldly red dirt, the camels silhouetted against the skyline.
Robyn represented only herself and undertook the trek for reasons even she did not understand. Seeing her develop and expand her thinking during the days and weeks and months on the track makes this a fascinating book.
Incredibly beautiful.......2003-07-10
This book breaks all the boundaries - combining Photography, digital media and narrative to capture the wild spirit in us all. Makes me want to buy and camel and set off!
Alice to Ocean.......2000-03-07
I bought this book while on a visit to Australia in 1990 and read it on the flight home! I was completely entranced by this woman's tenacity and determination to complete her often difficult but life expanding trek ALL ALONE! I had lost this book in a fire in 1993 and felt like I had lost a friend - I am soooo happy to see it is back in print! The incredible photos that accompany the journey are worth every penny!

From Library Journal
Life becomes empty for Alice when her youngest child leaves home. After years of selfless devotion to her children, she suddenly finds herself alone with a husband she no longer loves or wishes to wait on. Typical of many housewives in their fifties, she finds she must take her life in a new direction. Her road to self-fulfillment, which begins with a one-night stand, provides humorous and entertaining reading. Despite an ending that will make feminists cringe, the book presents a realistic and sensitive look at the empty-nest problem without the heavy self-consciousness so prevalent in current women's novels. Although not profound, this book does offer insight into a common phenomenon. For general readers.
