Book Description
This book provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts, techniques, and methods used for electron microscopy at high resolution in space, energy, and even in time. It delineates the theory of elastic scattering, which is most useful for spectroscopic and chemical analyses. There are also discussions of the theory and practice of image calculations, and applications of HRTEM to the study of solid surfaces, highly disordered materials, solid state chemistry, mineralogy, semiconductors and metals. Contributors include J. Cowley, J. Spence, P. Buseck, P. Self, and M.A. O'Keefe. Compiled by experts in the fields of geology, physics and chemistry, this comprehensive text will be the standard reference for years to come.
Book Description
The discovery of the Nanotube in 1991 by electron microscopy has ushered in the era of Nanoscience. The atomic-resolution electron microscope has been a crucial tool in this effort. This book gives the basic theoretical background needed to understand how electron microscopes allow us to see atoms, together with highly practical advice for electron microscope operators. The book covers the usefulness of seeing atoms in the semiconductor industry, in materials science (where scientists strive to make new lighter, stronger, cheaper materials), and condensed matter physics (for example in the study of the new superconductors). Biologists have recently used the atomic-resolution electron microscope to obtain three-dimensional images of the Ribosome, work which is covered in this book. The book also shows how the ability to see atomic arrangements has helped us understand the properties of matter. This new third edition of the standard text retains the early sections on the fundamentals of electron optics, linear imaging theory with partial coherence and multiple-scattering theory. Also preserved are updated earlier sections on practical methods, with detailed step-by-step accounts of the procedures needed to obtain the highest quality images of the arrangement of atoms in thin crystals using a modern electron microscope. The sections on applications of atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) have been extensively updated, including descriptions of HREM in the semiconductor industry, superconductor research, solid state chemistry and nanoscience, as well as metallurgy, mineralogy, condensed matter physics, materials science and biology. Entirely new sections have been added on electron holography, aberration correctors, field-emission guns, imaging filters, HREM in biology and on organic crystals, super-resolution methods, Ptychography, CCD cameras and Image plates. New chapters are devoted entirely to scanning transmission electron microscopy and Z-contrast, and also to associated techniques, such as energy-loss spectrocospy, Alchemi, nanodiffraction and cathodoluminescence. Sources of software for image interpretation and electron-optical design are also given.

Book Description
High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) has become a most powerful method for investigating the internal structure of materials on an atomic scale of around 0.1 nm. The authors clearly explain both the theory and practice of HREM for materials science. In addition to a fundamental formulation of the imaging process of HREM, there is detailed explanation of image simulationindispensable for interpretation of high-resolution images. Essential information on appropriate imaging conditions for observing lattice images and structure images is presented, and methods for extracting structural information from these observations are clearly shown, including examples in advanced materials. Dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces are dealt with, and materials such as composite ceramics, high-Tc superconductors, and quasicrystals are also considered. Included are sections on the latest instruments and techniques, such as the imaging plate and quantitative HREM.

older book yet still a valuable guide.......2001-02-24
the only reason this book does not get 5 stars is because it is not written this year. though written a few years ago it still holds much value as an incrediable guide book. allowing the traveller to look beyond the regular, average-joe, tourist things-to-do and really experience the country with a budget in mind.
i was completely impressed with the lack of attitude this book was written with. this book does not dictact like most other travel books. instead, you get the views of a group of university students, many thoughts, many opinions, which allows you to create your own opinion rather than being told.
it leaves you open to see all parts of the many countries listed in this book, not just the pricy hotels and tourist areas. i felt this book showed me a part of guatemala that i would not have seen if travelling with any other book. completely original in its way of travelling, and ideas about what to see and do. i would not doubt to reccomend this book to any of my friends, even though it is slightly dated.
i, once again, set my travelling sights toward central america and would not dream of being there without this book.
what more needs to be said??!@?!! it rules.
this book allows you to travel with value in mind. money does not dictate good times. the possibilities are endless with this book, regardless of the amount of money spent. definately ideal for the student or younger minded traveller with adventure in mind.
just wish they would continue to publish more of these perfect travel companions. last year i checked out the new york edition too. it was just as great. hope to see other similar publications in the future!!

Book Description
An unforgettable narrative collage told in poems
Keesha has found a safe place to live, and other kids gravitate to her house when they just can’t make it on their own. They are Stephie – pregnant, trying to make the right decisions for herself and those she cares about; Jason – Stephie’s boyfriend, torn between his responsibility to Stephie and the baby and the promise of a college basketball career; Dontay – in foster care while his parents are in prison, feeling unwanted both inside and outside the system; Carmen – arrested on a DUI charge, waiting in a juvenile detention center for a judge to hear her case; Harris – disowned by his father after disclosing that he’s gay, living in his car, and taking care of himself; Katie – angry at her mother’s loyalty to an abusive stepfather, losing herself in long hours of work and school.
Stretching the boundaries of traditional poetic forms – sestinas and sonnets – Helen Frost’s extraordinary debut novel for young adults weaves together the stories of these seven teenagers as they courageously struggle to hold their lives together and overcome their difficulties.
Customer Reviews:
How Teenagers REALLY Feel!.......2006-05-09
How is it that a middle aged woman can capture so well what we all go through as teenagers? Frost's charecters are absolutely spell-binding, particularly the titular Keesha, who has so much depth and so many layers, she could easily just walk off the page. When I read the book for the first time, I didn't realize that it was actually poetry. Well, obviously it's printed in verse, but Frost finds a unique and passionate voice for each charecter, each of whom speak through the sestina verses, and into our hearts. Each poem also translates very well into dramatic monolouges, which can leave an audience spellbound. I should know, I saw a version of this book as a play, and audiences left captivated by Frost's words. They weave a magical spell that not many other authors can write. Younger readers should check out Frost's "Spinning Through The Universe", which is similar, but focuses on the entire class of an elementary school teacher. As one who has been so deeply touched by Frost's understanding of the human condition (especially the teen's point of view), I applaud her!
An interesting read........2006-05-01
Keesha's House" by Helen Frost is a book that tells of the hardships that many teenagers are faced with. Each character faces a very different dilemma. Stephie is pregnant, Jason is Stephie's boyfriend who must decide what is important to him, Dontay is a foster child, Carmen was arrested on a DUI, Harris is gay, and Katie has and abusive stepfather. All share one quality. They need a place to get away from it all. That is where Keesha, a teenager herself, comes into play. She helps the other teens to get away from their problems.
The book is written entirely in free verse poetry. This choice of writing shows off Helen Frost's exceptional skill for molding poetry into a plot. Sentence structures flow and there are very few places where the poetic style interferes with the reading. With short chapter and not many pages, readers fly through the book in a day or two, but because of the lack of dialog, readers often don't know when characters are talking to each other or if conversations are talking place.
Frost creates character's readers car root for, but not everyone will be able to relate. Even though Frost's characters face various different hardships, they are problems that many don't have to go through. With no true narrator, readers don't' have anyone to cling to. Frost skips from character to character with ease, but often doesn't reveal their fate until later, which is sometimes maddening. It also seems as if each character is just telling their problem over and over only in small doses due to chapter length. Also, because of the shortness of the book, Frost is unable to include the actual conclusion of the book, leaving off at a point of bliss yet a point that leaves the reader questioning the fait of the characters.
"Kasha's House" is very interesting because of its poetic style and diverse group of main characters. Although it is sometimes repetitive and choppy, it is worth the very little time it takes to read. With a strong plot and thought provoking characters, "Keesha's House" would be decent required reading material due to the diversity of its style, characters, and poetic verse. Also, because of its length, students would find it easy to read. I would recommend "Keesha's House" to anyone who is having problems dealing with a dilemma or to anyone who likes to read about real characters who face real problems.
An enjoyable suprise.......2006-04-25
Now, I am not one who traditionally likes to read poetry, but I checked this book out from the library and finished it by the end of the day, and not only that but I found it to be quite a delight. The only problem is that it seemed the book went too fast and didn't focus enough on each character and their lives at the house, or afterwards for that matter. However, I would still reccomend this book to all my friends
Great Book for Young Adults.......2006-01-12
Helen Frost does a terrific job of writing characters that all young people can relate to. Each character brings a different set of problems to a house where all are accepted and all are welcome. Tender moments prevail as a group of unwanted misfits manage to create a safe haven and family-like home.
My only concern would be the man who owns the home. Perhaps we don't learn enough about him to be able to ward off uncomfortable feelings. An older man who allows unwanted teenagers to live in his house without paying rent? Let's hope that our young people know enough not to replicate this scenerio, as we know that this picture-perfect setting is realistically not as innocent.
Keshia's Point.......2005-11-01
Keesha's House is a great inspirational novel for teens who might be reaching the peak of their young adult life. Many of the problems presented in this novel are things teens go through everyday. I felt that I could connect and that made every page more exciting to read. I know there are times in life when we wish there was a place we could escape to and reading this book made me see it really is possible. I give this book two thumbs and toes up.
