AT LAST - A HOW TO BOOK FOR US ALL!.......2004-11-10
The title of this book my be a bit misleading. While it does indeed cover almost every aspect of raising African Violets for show, it is much, much more. If you buy only one book addressing the raising of these wonderful plants, buy this one. The book is written in a straight forward manner, presenting many details, without being over whelming. Technical terms (jargon) are kept to a minimum. You do not need a degree in horticulture to understand the points the author is making. The book is quite suitable for both beginner and advanced grower alike. Illustrations are simple but very adequate and understandable as is the author's style. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the raising of African Violets! I wish there were more books on the market like this one.

An excellent book for all growers, for show or not........1999-08-03
As a grower of African Violets for many years, I find this book to be perhaps the most informative, particularly for the actual growing of the plants, in print. Virtually every aspect of growing perfect plants is discussed in a straight-forward format. Opinionated only by factual insight, no words are wasted. Technical necessities are discussed at a level for most everyone to easily comprehend and put to use. Considered THE BOOK in many grower circles, and deservedly so by virtue of the success that can be achieved by following the authors advice.

If you own only ONE book on the subject of growing African Violets buy this one, right away. I've grow African Violets for YEARS, and still refer to this book at times. It's a MUST HAVE!!
Book Description
Seagrasses are unique plants; the only group of flowering plants to recolonise the sea. They occur on every continental margin, except Antarctica, and form ecosystems which have important roles in fisheries, fish nursery grounds, prawn fisheries, habitat diversity and sediment stabilisation. Over the last two decades there has been an explosion of research and information on all aspects of seagrass biology. However the compilation of all this work into one book has not been attempted previously. In this book experts in 26 areas of seagrass biology present their work in chapters which are state-ofâthe-art and designed to be useful to students and researchers alike. The book not only focuses on what has been discovered but what exciting areas are left to discover. The book is divided into sections on taxonomy, anatomy, reproduction, ecology, physiology, fisheries, management, conservation and landscape ecology. It is destined to become the chosen text on seagrasses for any marine biology course.

Book Description
A bout with alcoholism has just cost Dr. Kate Anderson her medical practice, her comfortable lifestyle, and her confidence. After a year in recovery she accepts a job for the Public Health Service in rural Immokalee, Florida as the only physician to Seminole Indians, migrant farm workers, and drug addicts. Haunted by dreams of a long repressed childhood incident, coupled with the raw pain of the loss that sent her spiraling out of control, it would be easy to curl up into the bottom of a vodka bottle and drown. The temptation is always there. But her patients need her, depend on her. And being a doctor is more than just a job, it is her life's calling. As Kate fights her demons, both old and new, she knows failure will cost her everything. Like stepping through seagrass in the Everglades, one misstep will send her sinking into the ooze. There won't be a second chance.

Don't Miss This One!.......2006-12-23
A starchy New England doctor finds herself working in a backwater government health clinic in Immokalee, FL, where the climate is steamy in more ways than one. Behind her reserved façade, Kate Anderson hides the turmoil of a recovering alcoholic struggling to face her own issues as she regains her confidence as a doctor. Kate befriends Seminole tribal leader, Tommy Tiger, as overbearing and bellicose as he is tender and ingratiating. The sparks begin to fly. Kate's forays into Seminole culture offer a fascinating glimpse of Native American life today. The seething subplot, a tangled tale of drug smuggling, money laundering, spiritual decay, betrayal and revenge, drives this story to a harrowing conclusion.

Sea Turtles: A Complete Guide to Their Biology, Behavior, and Conservation
ASIN: 0520240472 |
Book Description
Seagrasses, a group of about sixty species of underwater marine flowering plants, grow in the shallow marine and estuary environments of all the world's continents except Antarctica. The primary food of animals such as manatees, dugongs, green sea turtles, and critical habitat for thousands of other animal and plant species, seagrasses are also considered one of the most important shallow-marine ecosystems for humans since they play an important role in fishery production. Though they are highly valuable ecologically and economically, many seagrass habitats around the world have been completely destroyed or are now in rapid decline. The World Atlas of Seagrasses is the first authoritative and comprehensive global synthesis of the distribution and status of this critical marine habitat--which, along with mangroves and coral reefs, has been singled out for particular attention by the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity.
Illustrated throughout with color maps, photographs, tables, and more, and written by a large team of international collaborators, this unique volume covers seagrass ecology, scientific studies to date, current status, changing distributions, threatened areas, and conservation and management efforts for twenty-four regions of the world. As human populations expand and continue to live disproportionately in coastal areas, bringing new threats to seagrass habitat, a comprehensive overview of coastal resources and critical habitats is more important than ever. The World Atlas of Seagrasses will stimulate new research, conservation, and management efforts, and will help better focus priorities at the international level for these vitally important coastal ecosystems.
Customer Reviews:
Useful reference tool.......2007-08-10
I bought this for the maps. I originally borrowed it from the library to aid me with my research...recent and comprehensive world maps of seagrass distribution are not that easy to come by and this book includes one for every imaginable species. It was so useful that I decided I wanted to always have it on hand. In the text it gives nice descriptions of seagrass composition for different areas of the world and in the back has drawings, distribution maps, and estimated coverage of each species. The only thing I wished it included is standard characteristics of each species in the back. This book pulls together information from a remarkable number of sources into one place and ended up saving me a lot of time and headaches.

Book Description
Seagrasses occur in coastal zones throughout the world in the areas of marine habitats that are most heavily influenced by humans. Despite a growing awareness of the importance of these plants, a full appreciation of their role in coastal ecosystems has yet to be reached. This book provides an entry point for those wishing to learn about seagrass ecology and provides a broad overview of the present state of knowledge. The volume discusses the recent progress in research and current research foci, complemented by extensive literature references to guide the reader to more detailed studies. This book will be valuable to students of marine biology wishing to specialize in this area and to established researchers wanting to enter the field. In addition, it will provide an excellent reference for those involved in the management and conservation of coastal areas that harbor seagrasses.

Seagrasses: Biology, Ecology and Conservation
ASIN: 0849320453 |
Book Description
Seagrasses are becoming widely used as in situ indicators of the relative health and condition of subtropical and tropical estuarine ecosystems. To permit meaningful management of our estuaries, there is clearly a need to develop and refine ways of effectively monitoring and assessing seagrasses. Seagrasses: Monitoring, Ecology, Physiology, and Management includes the peer-reviewed, written results of presentations made at a recent workshop that addressed this very issue. A total of 28 original research and review chapters are organized around four major themes: Ecology and Physiology, Monitoring and Trends, Management, and Restoration. Additional research study results, not completed at the time of the workshop, are also included as they are directly related to the topic of seagrass management ecology. Overall, Seagrasses: Monitoring, Ecology, Physiology, and Management encompasses the latest research in seagrass management ecology to assist in the promotion of a dialogue between the research and environmental management communities. Not only will this work serve as a cornerstone for continued improvement in effectively monitoring the health and condition of near coastal waters, but also as a reference central to the premise that effective and efficient assessment of seagrasses will aid in estuarine ecosystem management.

Book Description
Mangroves and seagrasses form extensive and highly productive ecosystems that are biologically diverse and economically valuable. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of the biology and ecology of mangroves and seagrasses, using a global range of examples. It deals with the adaptations of these plants to their exacting environment, the rich and diverse communities of organisms that depend on mangrove forests and seagrass meadows (including tree-climbing shrimps, synchronously flashing fireflies and 'gardening' seacows), the links between mangrove, seagrass, and other habitats, the evolution, biodiversity and biogeography of mangroves and seagrasses, and the likely effects of global climate change. The economic value of mangroves and seagrasses is also discussed, including approaches to rational management of these vital resources, and techniques for the restoration of degraded habitats. As with other titles in the Biology of Habitats Series, particular emphasis is placed on the organisms that dominate these aquatic environments although pollution, conservation and experimental aspects are also considered. The book is intended for students, naturalists and professionals and assumes no previous knowledge of mangrove or seagrass ecology.

The Usual and Unusual London Walks.......2000-06-20
I have used and read many self-walking tour books and have taken walking tours in London. I found this book to be one of the best as usual with any Time Out Guide Book. The information in their books is not as detailed as some others, but they give a great overall view. The walks, on the other hand, go into very good detail. The maps are excellant and the information on how to get to the start of the walk is the best I've ever seen. I plan to use this book when I go to London next February (2001).

Book Description
It's not about the drugs. It's not about the girls or the fights or the fading streetlights. It's about two nights that weren't going to be different from the rest, but then took a turn. It's about trying to find out who you are and who your real friends are. It's about everything being the same, the same, the same. It's about nothing being the same again. It's about Brendon, WIll, and Kevin -- three friends on different paths -- and the weekend that put them to the test.

Waste.......2007-05-17
Most of this book contains the rambling thoughts and dreams of a teenager on an acid trip. There is no plot and even when something manages to actually happen (like an argument with a friend) the author misses every opportunity to make something of it. There are plenty of books that involve drug use that at least give the reader something. The book ends with the main character feeling somehow different about life (or not) and wanting to change things (or not) but there's really no motivation for this and no follow-up at all. It's a wonder to me that, with all the aspiring authors out there, PUSH saw fit to publish this one (and totally without merit).
And one thing that bothered me was that every once in a while the main character thinks a sentence with incorrect grammar (like the wrong verb tense), which totally doesn't fit with the rest of the book and stands out sorely making it seem unnatural and ill-fitting.
I'm actually surprised at myself for finishing this book and if it were any longer, I wouldn't have.
The Euphoria and the Pain .......2006-09-18
"I was flushing the evil out....It was a good feeling knowing even though I might not be able to sleep, at least I'd feel clean."
17 year old Brendan and his friends Will and Kevin are the dregs of school society, the outcast, the fringe. Now they're in for a night of memories. After throwning back some Acid, they've hit the streets of Philly to enjoy themselves when the Pure Sunshine kicks in. The best and worst part about Sunshine is it makes everything else boring. It takes Brendan past all the normal experiences to where he can't enjoy anything anymore because of his desire for the next hit.
That's where Sunshine leaves him---at a place where the real and surreal mix together and separate in a way that leaves real life not worth as much as induced life. In the middle of a midnight trip, Brendan and the guys visit Sally, the downtown girl, so they can relax safely and enjoy their high. With so many girls that Brendan wishes he could take things deeper with, their night with Sally awakens a spark in him for something more. Not necessarily with Sally. Or any specific girl. But with something. For once, he feels his void.
Brian James' PURE SUNSHINE delves into the euphoria and pain people experience when addicted to LSD. While the details of the high can be intriguing at times, a sense of arc and story are strangely missing all the way through. The story is more a realization that drugs may not be everything Brendan's made them out to be. Thatâ(tm)s the only thing that can bring him back to the point he can enjoy reality again, give him a chance with the girl he's always wanted, and get him to a place he can feel clean for the first time in a long time.

Boring.......2006-06-01
Brendan and his friends are so shallow I was bored reading it. Is that all he's about, tripping? I guess so.
good if you like drugs...........2005-12-28
i think it takes a certain type of person to like this book. i have never done drugs, but i loved it because it was funny and made no sense and reminded me of a day in my own life. i let my friend borrow it and she never finished, because it wasn't really about anything or so she told me. but somebody borrowed it from her and read it in a day or two and then we had conversations about how we wanted to do acid so we could do the stupid things the characters did. needless to say, i bought no acid, but i did enjoy the book and will probably have to buy it again since i never got it back......
question.......2005-07-06
i recently read this book and loved it! but i had to give it back to my friend...and i remembered some part where it said something like live life like its suicide..does anyone that own the book remember that? i wanted to know what came after that...
