Good reference but short on photo's.......2007-07-28
Author Philllip Lowry did a nice job of reserach, and the result is an excellent reference source on big and minor league ballparks of past and present. But there are far too few photos (or illustrations) to give the reader an accurate feel for these wonderful green cathedrals. Also, I have the earlier (1992) edition which lacks much updated information on the many big-league ballparks (and some minor league ones as well) that entered the arena during the 1990's and 2000's.
Baseball fans will love it........2006-12-12
Green Cathedrals: The Ultimate Celebration of Major League and Negro League Ballparks offers up a history of each of the ballparks that have hosted Major League and Negro League baseball, and appears in a revised, updated edition which has seen many changes since its initial appearance a decade ago. Over a hundred new ballparks and hundreds of new photos make for essentially a different presentation, covering each park's location, dimensions, capacity, and history. Baseball fans will love it.

Lowry Missed the Boat to Cuba.......2006-11-15
I have just received from SABR a copy of the new revised edition of Phil Lowry's long-awaited latest version of GREEN CATHEDRALS (Walker & Company). I can't judge the overall quality or accuracy, since I am not a ballparks expert. But if the two entries on Cuban ballparks (pp.96-97) are any measure, than there is much to be judged as most disappointing. It is a shame that Lowry didn't have the Cuba entries checked by someone who knew anything at all about Cuban ballparks.
The first stadium, El Cerro or Gran Stadium is named incorrectly as Estadio Gran (which would be totally inappropriate in Spanish; it should be Gran Estadio del Cerro). It is also indicated that the occupant was the Negro National League Havana Cuban Stars of 1920, an absurdity, of course, because the Negro leagues club of that name played in the States (not Havana) and this park was not built until 1946, long after the team's demise.
The July 25, 1959 Cuban Sugar Kings contest (the one with the shooting incident) that is mentioned in the text was played before a crowd estimated at 25,000 (not 2572, as given by Lowry).
Gran Estadio was built in 1946 and was the first and only park on this site in the Cerro neighborhood. There was no Gran Stadium II which replaced some number one version as Lowry states. (He is apparently confusing the two Almendares ballparks: Almendares Park I (original home of the pro Cuban League) was destroyed by a hurricane in 1926 and promptly replaced by Almendares Park II, which gave way in the early 1930s to La Tropical Stadium. There has only ever been one Gran Stadium (Cerro Stadium), which was renamed Latin American Stadium in 1971 by the Castro government, on the occasion of its refurbishing that year for the Amateur World Series.
The second stadium listed by Lowry is Estadio Cerveza Tropicale, which was technically Gran Stadium Cervecería Tropical (or familiarly La Tropical Stadium). It has no E at the end of the name.
The occupant is listed as the NNL Cubans but again this was not a stadium used by a Negro leagues team (for "neutral cite games" as Lowry has it). It was a stadium which housed Cuban amateur play and also the bulk of Cuban League pro games between 1930 and 1946. It was perhaps most famous for hosting the Amateur World Series games of 1939, 1940 and 1941.
Lowry claims the park was built in 1930 for the Pan American Games. The Pan Am Games didn't start until 1951; the park was built to hold the second Central American and Caribbean Games in the fall of 1930.
Lowry lists current uses for the park (today called Estadio Pepe Marrero, after a minor hero of the 1950s revolution) as lacrosse, soccer, and track and field. I have spent a lot of time in Cuba in the past dozen years and have never heard of a single lacrosse match being played on the island. (Field hockey yes, but that is not lacrosse.)
But worst of all, the photo Lowry uses at the top of page 97 and identifies as Havana's La Tropicale (sic) is not La Tropical at all but rather Gran Stadium in Cerro, taken sometime in the late forties or early fifties. La Tropical is easily identified by the running track that was its main feature (it circled the baseball playing area) and would be clearly visible in any aerial shot. The track and some of the grandstand is still there, but the oval now circles a soccer field. The park was also set in a wooded area (not an urban center like Cerro), had only a small grandstand and no outfield fences.
For good photos of both Cerro (Gran) Stadium and La Tropical, one can look at Roberto González Echevarría's The Pride Havana, which also details the history of these historic venues. RGE's fine book has been a best-seller since 1999 and was readily available to Mr. Lowry.
All this does not bode well for the information on other obscure parks. Is the scholarship better there? Perhaps. I hate to play "I gotcha!" and this is far from my attention here. But I also hate to see Cuba baseball continue to be so shrouded in misinformation and even dis-information. Especially when there are now so many good sources out there on the subject.

My 5-year-old son is fascinated with cathedrals. He loves to look at the book I have on a local cathedral. He tries to draw them and build them with his Lego bricks. It is difficult to find a book on this subject that is geared toward his age level, so when I saw this coloring book, I knew I had to buy it. He absolutely loves it. I might have to buy several more of them. He'll have this one finished in no time.

It boggles my mind that the author actually did all that research to find out the dimensions, important events, descriptions, and in many cases photos of every major league ballpark ever to host a game. The result is a feeling like I imagine it would be to see a game at Fenway Park: a visit to a temple of baseball. The title could not be more perfectly chosen.
Lowry has also promoted a bit of healing. Having recognized what any aficionado of baseball history knows--that the Negro Leagues of old were surely major leagues on a par with the AL and NL, except in recordkeeping--he spurs interest in a too-often forgotten part of baseball's past.
This book is absolutely essential to the library of any true lover of baseball history.

This book was long overdue. Philip J. Lowry certainly did his research to find all these ballparks--even including some that were used briefly at the turn of the century! Listed are parks used by both the American and National Leagues, the Federal, Union, and Players Leagues of early baseball history, and the Negroe Leagues. Now I'm waiting for the minor league edition to come out.

A *must have* for any baseball fan.......1999-06-12
This book is incredible in so many different ways. Every major league ballpark (including the Negro leagues) is reviewed down to the smallest detail. Also included is an excellent foreword about ballpark construction and the future thereof by Mr. Dale Swearingen. Mr. Lowry is to be commended for the incredible research base. Everything from distance measurements, fence heights, and the quirkier aspects of each park is examined.

Too bad the essence of Rome can't be bottled and exported to a corner store near you. If it could, you could pick up a weekend's worth of Rome along with your pint of milk and Snickers bar, and you'd probably never get to repainting the stairs, doing the laundry, or watching that new video release. If you are traveling to a city and spending only a short time (3 or less days) you need nothing more than an Eyewitness Top 10 Guide. I will never go anywhere without one. It categorizes and boils things down, but the print is large enough to read. If you will be spending longer in your destination (for instance you are studying abroad) you will want a more comprehensive guide. Don't hesitate to buy any of the Eyewitness Top 10 Guides -- I have 3 of them.

Lavishly illustrated and easy to follow. Presents a logical division of the city and groups attractions accordingly. Information is accurate and up-to-date. Clearly it's a popular guidebook, as evidenced by the number of Americans visibly carrying it in the city. Pair it with Frommer's Italy and you're covered.
Gave great advice.......2007-07-23
This little book was our bible on a recent trip to Rome. I will always be grateful that DK included San Clemente in their top 10. This amazing little church is like a layer cake of fascinating things to see. The street level is a lovely 12th century church with beautiful floors, columns, and frescoes. Underneath is an excavated 4th century church that includes a frescoe with the first sentence ever written in Italian: "Fili de le pute traite", or "Pull, you sons of whores!" I kid you not. This level also includes the tomb of Saint Cyril, creator of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a wonderful tombstone with a pagan inscription on one side, and on the other, an early Christian inscription -- it was recycled! They have it set up so you can flip it over to see both sides. Finally, the bottom level has ancient ruins, including a Mithraic (pagan) shrine.
The only time the book let us down was its recommendation of Da Augusto, a restaurant in Trastevere. This was their #1 listing under "Cheap Eats" for Trastevere but it was the only unappetizing food we were served in our whole trip.

We will be going to Rome soon, but we will not carry this item in our luggage. Why? It looks like good data but we could not read the tiny print. We had to pull out a magnifying glass to read anything. I am dissappointed.

I started reading this series a few years ago and they are the laugh out loud kind of funny. I've found myself sitting there by myself reading and laughing.
Let's Go Down the Disco... Again!.......2007-03-14
In the seventh installment of the Georgia Nicolson series, she's back again, and her list of potential boyfriends is growing. Georgia is stuck between a rock and a hard place when her latest crush, Masimo says he'll get back to her in a week's time, telling her if he wants them to be "boyfriend" and "girlfriend". The book gets off to a slower start than Rennison's 6 other Georgia books, because it mostly involves Georgia waiting restlessly for Masimo's response. However, soon it picks up again as Georgia's relationship with Dave the Laugh moves into new territory, and her home life becomes more and more ridiculously hilarious. Part of what makes these books so great is the over exaggeration of everyday life. No teacher's could be possibly be as clueless or cruel as those at Stalag 14, and no little sister could be as crazy or clever as Libby, but somehow Rennison makes it seem like everything in Georgia's like is full blown-from her ever changing crushes, to her crazy friend Jas, to her 3 hour makeup application.
The book stays true to the other 6 novels of the same series by combining humor with actual things that teenage girls do and think about. At points Rennison gets carried away with the sillyness, (ie, the Viking Wedding),but all in all it keeps the reader interested.
The reader feels for Georgia as she struggles with unreturned love towards goregous and/or funny boys; and jealousy towards friends,
but at the same time the reader can't help but laugh at her because of the way Rennison has of making any situation she's in humourous.
This book in particulary, being the last in the series, has the unfortunate job of tying up any loose ends. Georgia's first love Robby, AKA the Sex God returns at the end from "Kiwi-a-Gogo", and leaves the reader hanging. The reader is also left hanging by the way things end with Dave the Laugh, who is undoubtadly the favorite of the "boys" Georgia has, and is involved with.
If you want a serious read, then this book, or the other 6, are NOT for you. But, if you're looking for an easy, hilarious and captivating beach read, then it definetly is; you have to however be, or have recently been, a teenage girl. Startled by his Furry Shorts is not THE best of the series, but it's still really enjoyable.
Laughing Out Loud.......2006-11-26
Georgia is once again in the oven of luurve, the bakery of pain, the cakeshop of agony...you get the picture...due to her spontaneous ultimatum to Masimo. As Georgia waits with impatientocity for Masimo's answer she continues through her tortuous lessons at Stalag Fourteen, rehearsals of MacUseless, the forehead staring campaign against Wet Lindsey who is sporting new octopus tentacles in the form of hair extensions, hopping firsters and sneak attacks by Angus and Gordy.
This most recent entry in the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson does not fail to be var, var amusant. The conflagration on the final night of MacUseless was particularly laughable. A couple other mentions is that one cannot help but feel bad for Dave the Laugh as it appears he is trying quite hard to just be "mates" with Georgia who just doesn't seem to get what's going on with him and the fact that if I were Georgia I would NEVER forgive Spazzy Jazzy for neglecting her status as Radio Jas and keeping the secret that she did at the end of the story. All in all this book has left me on the rack of curiosity as to what will happen in the upcoming book. Oh, and I can't wait to read about the Viking nuptuals and how furry shorts fit in to it.

Georgia Nicholson is at it again in the newest installment of Louise Rennison's hilarious series about the trials and tribulations of a lovelorn British high school girl. STARTLED BY HIS FURRY SHORTS does not disappoint readers who have grown to love the quirky Georgia, her eccentric family, and her Ace Gang of best buddies.
As STARTLED opens, our poor heroine finds herself, "On the rack of romance. And also in the oven of luurve." (That's 'love' for those of you who are new to Georgia-speak.) She is waiting to hear from her Italian Stallion almost-boyfriend, to whom she had given an ultimatum. He must either be exclusive to her, or they may never share another romantic evening under the stars together. Needless to say, she's not entirely sure she did the right thing with Masimo. After all, what if he comes back with the wrong answer?
But while Georgia wants the hunky Italian-American to be faithful to her, she's having a little trouble in that department herself. She's not completely over her first love, Robbie, who left her to "snog with marsupials" in New Zealand. And her friend, Dave the Laugh, appears to have a crush on Georgia, but she has no idea how to handle it.
As with the other Georgia Nicholson novels, I found myself laughing out loud as I turned the pages. Everyone in this series is interesting and well crafted. Sure, Georgia herself is shallow, but she's also funny and (usually) kind and easy to relate to. There are even some villains (i.e. Wet Lindsay and Astonishingly Dim Monica) who readers can love to hate.
The glossary at the end of the book was helpful as always in deciphering unfamiliar British terms, although it was often unclear whether these terms were really unique to Britain or if they were just unique to author Louise Rennison's fertile imagination.
Pick up a copy of STARTLED BY HIS FURRY SHORTS and laugh yourself silly.

Let's go down the disco!.......2006-07-29
In this, the seventh book of the Georgia Nicholson series, Georgia finds herself in "the oven of luuurve" once again. At the end of the last book, Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers, Georgia had given the Italian Stallion, a.k.a. Masimo, an ultimatum: to be an exclusive couple.
Throughout this book, Georgia awaits her answer and has to deal with the devastating idea of only being "mates" with Masimo. Will she be able to live if he picks Wet Lindsay over her? And what exactly did Dave the Laugh mean when he said that they were meant for each other?
Along the way, Georgia has to put up with her little sister, Libby, who is constantly hiding things in her bed, and her psycho cats, Angus and Gordy, who attack at random. That doesn't even begin to explain the horrors of dealing with school at Stalag 14. Jas, Georgia's "bestest pally", doesn't seem to be very understanding and the rest of the Ace Gang are helping to plan a Viking Wedding for RoRo and Sven, being sure to perfect their new Viking "Let's go down the disco" dance, complete with bison horns. Will Masimo and Georgia end up together? Will she ever snog anyone again?
A must-read for fans of the series, this book is laugh out loud funny and, as Georgia would say, "full of hilariosity".
