Beautiful and Informative Photographic Journal.......2002-12-10
In this first volume of "Glaciers Secrets", George Ostrum delights readers with humor, excellent photography, and some very intriguing insight into one of the most beautiful places in the world; Glacier National Park- which he has hiked and explored his entire life. One becomes aware upon reading this book, that there is an emotional connection between the author and his special place. It produces some fun reading, and the adventurous will be prompted to explore the trails of the "Crown of the Continent" for themselves.
A unique and wonderful look at Glacier.......2000-07-19
This book is thoroughly enjoyable from the first page. Local hero George Ostrom and his trailblazing geezer friends "the Over-the-hill gang", hike to incredibly beautiful places that most of us will never see.

Book Description
Alexander Cold and Nadia Santos reunite for their final adventure in Isabel Allende's celebrated trilogy. This time they are heading to the blazing plains of Kenya, where Alex's grandmother Kate is writing an article about the first elephant-led safaris in Africa. Days into the tour, a Catholic missionary approaches the camp in search of companions who have mysteriously disappeared.
As the group investigates, they discover a clan of Pygmies and a harsh world of corruption, slavery, and poaching. Alexander and Nadia must trust in the strength of their totemic animal spirits as they launch a spectacular struggle to restore freedom to the Pygmies and return leadership to its rightful hands.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-02-20
I really enjoyed this book. It is written for adolescents but I am 24 and reading it for grad school for a literature for adolescents class. There are two that come before that I am going to read also.
Oh decepcion!!.......2006-02-25
Blend of magic and fantasy with realism.......2006-01-13
The finale of the acclaimed trilogy, that began with Kingdom of the Golden Dragon, has had a lot to live up to. Alex, now 18, along with his grandmother and friend, Nadia, travel to Kenya on an elephant safari. Like the previous two books, things do not exactly happen simply, and the trio encounter a whole host of problems such as after a plane crash, they end up trying to help save primitive Pygmies from slavery. A mixture of magic, adventure, and a sensous surrounding gives this book an edge that many children's books do not have.
Having read a few of Isabel Allende's books I was certainly looking forward to this one, as I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first two. However, by the time I got around to reading this one, I realized something was missing; it may have been that I was older and a more experienced reader, for it has been a while since I have read the first two. The character's still amused me, and the magic they possesed created something far more interesting than the trilogy would have been had they not had it. However, I found myself bored with a long drawn out plotline that, although had twists, followed the same basic outline as the first two. Despite my problems with it, and my need for a change, I feel that many people will enjoy it, and I am certainly going to reread the first two books. The blend of magic and fantasy with realism, and an amazing setting, certainly gives this book a head start to many children's books.

a really great book, though maybe not as good as the ones before it.......2005-07-18
I really liked this book, although it was a bit slow at the start, and i didn't think it was quite as good as the two books before it.
I love the Alex and Nadia trilogy, there's a twist at the end of each excellent book and i always finish each book wanting to hear more from Alex and Nadia. Isabel Allende is, i think, a fantastic children's author.
I think in this book Alex and Nadia didn't really seem to use their totemic powers, and i wish they had, because for me, that was what separated this trilogy from the other children's books.
I guess i was a little bit disapointed, as i was expecting more from isabelle allende, but this book is still one of the best i have ever read.
Excellent trilogy.......2005-07-11
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the rest of the trilogy by Allende. The entire story of Alexander was my first introduction to Allende's writing and has made me want more young adult fiction by this author.

Book Description
Efe Pygmies is a portrait of an endangered people and place. This volume presents a visual portrayal of the Efe pygmies of the Congo, the world's oldest pure-blooded ethnic group and one of its most remote.
Through this book's photography and text, the world can now discover a way of life that has remained intact for thousands of years deep within the reaches of the Ituri rain forest. This volume reflects the seasonally based life of the Efe: boys and men at hunt, family life in the camps, dancing and music making, and bark and body painting. Providing a unique perspective on a people who have been virtually inaccessible until now and capturing the mysterious, sensual quality of the rain forest itself, this special edition is a unique treasure that sheds unprecedented light on an endangered people and environment.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful and Moving Book........2001-01-03
Efe pygmies: Archers of the African Rain Forest is a sumptuously illustrated tome that will long grace my coffee table. The main part of the book - a subtle photographic study depicting the Efe subsisting precariously but harmoniously in the depths of the Ituri forest - is preceded by a brief but fascinating scene-setting section of white-on-black text.
The author presents vivid visual and verbal images of his subjects making baskets, carrying hunting nets, filing their teeth, smoking tobacco, playing music, dispatching a net-caught antelope, touchingly expressing grief at the death of a newborn, and fleeing from their leaf huts into the night beneath a cracking and crashing, lightning-weakened tree.
Skillful, intimate photography makes us yearn for the easy laughter and simplicity of these gentle, peaceful people, yet we are simultaneously made aware of the dangers and discomforts they must constantly face.
It is a fitting tribute to a people as "primitive" and untouched by global culture as any on earth, and the precariousness of their independence. Moreover, it is a compelling and persuasive insight into our own hunting and gathering origins, and the thoughts, feelings, and reactions we all share as part of the human family.
While William Wheeler's book may not lead us to put on treebark loin cloths and chase wildlife through the forest, it is an evocative portrayal of another culture, one that can teach us something about how to live surrounded by danger and dark forces and yet keep on reverentially singing, laughing, and living for the moment.
Although the Efe are clearly too humble and happy a people to bother sending missionaries to us for our edification, this beautiful and moving book affords a glimpse of what such a mission might convey.
Book Description
This intimate study portrays the hunter-gatherer Mbuti pygmies of Zaire. Kevin Duffy describes how these forest nomads, who are as adapted to the forest as its wildlife, gratefully acknowledge their beloved home as the source of everything they need: food, clothing, shelter, and affection. Looking on the forest in deified terms, they sing and pray to it and call themselves its children. With his patience and knowledge of their ways, Duffy was accepted by these, the world's smallest people, and invited to participate in the cycle of their lives from birth to death. This book is an excellent companion piece to Duffy's 50-minute film, Pygmies of the Rainforest, which was shown on PBS's science series, NOVA, as "BaMiki BaNdula". A 28-minute version (Children of the Forest) is also available.

Step into another world.......2006-09-15
Anyone with a big heart, spirit and a mind eager to adventure into another world will find this book a real gem. Also recommended is Walking the Trail, One Man's Journey Along the Cherokee Trail of Tears by Jerry Ellis.
A well-written, easy to follow guide through another world.......2000-09-13
Kevin Duffy takes us to places we can only imagine in this book. He rarely skips any details as he describes his time with the Mbuti pygnies of the Congo, yet you never feel like your being hit over the head with the facts. I found myself there, experiencing with him the sights, smells, sounds of the forest, and mingling with a people I may never meet, but for whom I've developed a new-found respect. Read this book if you want to visit such a beautiful, and sometimes dangerous, land, and perhaps come to understand a group of people who have for so long remained elusive to most of the outside world. Excellent book.
A deep look into the forest at the lives of Mbuti Pygmies.......1999-03-09
Had to read this for an anthropology class, was really dreading the whole thing. But I found myself more and more captivated by the objective yet personal insight into the lives of possibly the most unchanged known culture still in existence. I've gained a new respect both for the diversity of human life and for anthropology. I highly recommend this book to anyone curious enough to take the time and seek the insight of a gifted story-teller. You'll find yourself longing to be right there along with the author, and feeling as though you were.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and unsentimental.......2005-04-10
I've only just discovered this book, and I loved every moment of it. It was surprising to find Louis Sarno criticised for his writing by the previous reviewer. I thought his style was exactly uninflected enough to fit like a glove - being honest about both the Ba-Benjelle and himself. This honesty made the book far better both as an anthropological document, and as an autobiographical one as well.
Interesting too that reviewer could have done without the last 40 pages. The loss of purpose & damage caused to original civilisations by the outside world is unpleasant reading every time we come across it, I know - Norman Lewis' "The Missionaries" for instance (Fundamentalism vs. the Amazon Indians), will give you a lifetime dose - but frankly I prefer it to the Disney versions of the New-Age. It gives strength also to the transformation of the tribe when they move to the forest.
The companion volume to this book is Colin M. Turnbull's equally astonishing "The Forest People", written 30 years earlier about Turnbull's life with the Pygmies, consequently describing their life 30 years less affected by "civilisation".
The honesty of this book makes its musical and magical revelations unquestionable, and it breathes life into the cast of characters of Louis Sarno's extended family. This book ends on an upbeat, as the tribe moves to a new camp closer to the forest, which leaves me waiting for the next instalment ... Louis ? Ah,Africa is the home of soap-opera !
Haven't heard the music yet, but I will soon. Louis Sarno's descriptions have had me running round the net with my credit card in my hand. Buy a dozen for your friends, it's an extraordinary book.
Song from the Forest: My Life Among the Ba-Benjelle Pygmies.......2003-06-05
As a source of information on this group pygmies and their music this book is worth plowing through to almost the end.
While Louis Sarno does not have a captivating style of writing, the book does provide a unique perspective of one man's journey in Central Africa to find the Ba-benjelle pygmies and their music.
The sections on the dances, hunting, bees and duikers, etc. are interesting enough to keep one reading. The section on his love/obsession for Ngbali alternatly leaves you wishing he would succeed, scream exploitation and wondering if he really thought he wasn't being used. It is at this point, one wants to skip the last 40 or so pages.
The bottom line is make the effort to discover his journey and then go buy the music. You will be glad you did.

Book Description
The final installment of Isabel Allende's celebrated trilogy continues the journeys of Jaguar and Eagle –– and the transformation of an extraordinary friendship.
Alexander Cold knows all too well his grandmother Kate is never far from an adventure. When International Geographic commissions her to write an article about the first elephant–led safaris in Africa, they head –– with Nadia Santos and the magazine's photography crew –– to the blazing red plains of Kenya. Days into the tour, a Catholic missionary approaches their camp in search of his companions who have mysteriously disappeared. Kate, Alexander, Nadia, and their team, agreeing to aid the rescue, enlist the help of a local pilot to lead them to the swampy forest of Ngoubé. There they discover a clan of Pygmies who unveil a harsh and surprising world of corruption, slavery, and poaching.
Alexander and Nadia, entrusting the magical strengths of Jaguar and Eagle, their totemic animal spirits, launch a spectacular and precarious struggle to restore freedom and return leadership to its rightful hands.

Absolutely great characters who achieve hero status.......2007-01-12
Isabel Allende CAN WRITE. This series of three tales in the lives of two young heroes who travel to three exotic lands. Should keep most teenagers reading for the pure enjoyment of watching the young American boy and the young South American girl come of age through challenges that test their hearts and minds. Always there
is one foot in the physical world, and the other in the metaphysical world. Allende presents these two states
of being as one in the same in the world of these three stories. Not hokey, not Magic-on-demand, but a widening of awareness for the reader.
