You Don't Know me : Or do you?.......2007-09-21
John, a troubled teenager, believes that no one can ever understand him and everything that he has to go through. Though John is shy and quiet, he lives a life at home that no one could even imagine. Every day in John's life is another obstacle and another day that he hopes to get through without any problems. The novelist, David Klass, makes you experience John's pain too. This compelling story of a boy and his troubles, successes, and obstacles make the story addicting to read.
This book, You Don't Know Me, has so many amazing details I loved. John's descriptions of the different moments that occur sound so creative and unique, it makes everything seem so real. He made me feel some of the feelings and hardships that he goes through.
Just like everyone else, John has the typical teen issues. He has a terrible date with the girl of his dreams, his "friend who is not a friend," Billy Beezer, is arrested for shoplifting, and John is given a tuba solo in the school band even though he can't play. When his mother has to leave town to deal with one of her dying relatives, John is left alone with his step dad, who abuses him. The "father who is not his father" expects John to do everything for him, like a dictator. He also hits and kicks John when no one else is around. John cannot yell for help to get the "step dad" arrested.
John is all alone with no outlet to talk to since Billy is in trouble. His band mate, Violent Hayes, keeps an eye on John (a closer eye than some think). "You don't know me at all. You don't know the first thing about me," is John's motto throughout the book. To cope with all of his pain and anger, he creates amusing alternate realities in his head. Does his stepdad really hate John, or is he just protecting him? Is "Glory Hallelujah" the perfect girl for John or is she just "using" him? Why does Billy Beezer get mad at John? Does John ever find happiness?
In John's world, many things don't come easy and some things never seem to be good enough. The story is written in a unique point of view that makes you want to cry and laugh through all the adventures. Overall, this book gets an A because it was laugh-out-loud, but so powerful at the same time. It was like nothing I have ever read before. But to find out what really happens, you should read You Don't Know Me.
The Most Entertaining Book I Ever Read.......2007-03-05
This book is about a kid who's life dose not have a happy ending. His mom married a drunk who beats him for stupid stuff when she is not looking. When she died he took over the house and the boy's life. Now he dosn't know what to do or who to tell. The only people that can help him is his friends. Too bad he dosn't want help he just wants to live his life with n problems. But theres only 1 person eho is causing probems in his life and it's not his mom's husband. I rated this book a 5 because it caught my attention as soon as i picked it up. I will recomend this book to anyone because even if u read it before u can read it again and still enjoy it.
Teen Angst.......2007-02-18
The narrator of this story, John, is convinced that no one knows him. He is living what he thinks is a pretty awful life as an adolescent. He hates his school, where he moves through his days among groups of people who don't know him at all. He doesn't like his teachers, and he especially hates algebra class and band class, where he feels he has no talent at all. His home life is even worse. His father has been gone forever, and his mother has let another man move in, a horrible man who hits John when his mother isn't around and may be doing something illegal to earn money.
We follow John around for a few weeks as he narrates his life and gives his commentary on life. He talks about how bad his life is, but the way he describes it makes it almost amusing to read. This is an interesting story of a kid trying to survive the trials of adolescence.
I liked John's voice, and especially his use of dry sarcasm. I also like the ridiculous things that happen with John's friends and what happens when he goes out with Gloria. However, this book does get a little repetative, and I thought the end was a bit intense.

Book Description
'The two worst times in a woman's life is when she is 13 and when her daughter is 13,' or so goes a popular maxim in psychology circles. During these adolescent years, mothers are constantly struggling with how to handle their daughters-and themselves around their daughters. WHEN WE'RE IN PUBLIC.... is a survival handbook that discusses such important issues as beauty and body image, public behavior (both hers and moms), privileges and punishment, and sex. Written by the mother of a teenage daughter and featuring expert advice from a noted child psychologist, the book also offers simple steps to avoid disaster (i.e. before you think of dressing like your daughter, remember one word: Cher) and practical wisdom culled from numerous interviews with mothers of teenage daughters.

99% of this book is GREAT!.......2006-08-15
I have a 13 year old daughter, and this book really resonated with me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I already fit in the "Uncool Mom" category, but I still learned a lot from the common sense tips. I also really enjoyed the way that this book is written, with humor and anecdotes that keep you in stitches while helping you understand your daughter just a little better.
My one problem with the book was when the author recommended not teaching abstinance. I do think that it's naive to ONLY teach abstinance, but I think teaching kids that abstinance is an option is very important. By not teaching abstinance at all, but teaching kids about safe sex, what they will hear is that they are expected to have pre-marital sex. When you teach abstinance AND safe sex in conjunction, you are telling them that if they don't want to, it's a valid choice and they should feel confident in it, and if they do choose to have sex, here's how to stay safe.
Easy read with a few laughs.......2005-08-18
I am preparing for a teenage daughter (in about 3 years) and am trying to open myself up to a variety of tactics to handle those bouts of emotions. This book was an easy read and came with a few laughs, to prepare for the onslaught of teenage cruelty. The author shares her experiences with the rest of us, but it is up to us to decide what is best for our children. As an Uncool mom in training, I recommend this book to glean different perspectives in adolescent separation.
excellent with one big BUT...........2005-06-03
I really liked this book except for one thing which echoes what a previous reviewer said. teens can and do abstain. I know quite a few of them. people in the media saying that kids cant abstain so teaching abstinance leads to a downward spiral: who wants to try and do the impossible.
this aside though, this is an excellent book. I read some of the parts to my husband and we wondered if this woman has been in our home eavesdropping.
Laughing all the way to adulthood.......2004-07-24
I am the mother of a 14 year-old girl. She's a great kid, but when she went away to camp for a month and people asked me if I missed her, I said, "NO."
I'm a pretty good mom; I used to teach teenagers, and I have some clue about what this age is about. Still, Borowitz's book had me laughing out loud, and while I was laughing, some new ideas slipped in. Life post-camp is looking a little brighter.
Hilarious and helpful.......2003-12-03
Okay, I'm not a parent, let alone parent of a teenager...but I will be someday, and I'm interested, so I'm thinking about it and reading up. Here's what I'm thinking about this book:
I love it. It's wryly funny -- even occasionally hysterical -- and much of it rings true from watching my relatives bring up teenagers, being one not too long ago myself (though I didn't have some of the more extreme issues I notice in others), watching my own mom cope with me, and seeing the daily struggles between my peers and their moms when we were teens. There's a lot of "common sense" here, but don't let that statement fool you into thinking the book's useless; the best of us sometimes forget to exercise our "common" sense.
I particularly appreciate the ("common sense?") idea that moms should not fall into the trap of being "clueless" or the opposite trap of being your daughter's "cool" best friend. The best way to be both parent and friend is to be what Mrs. Borowitz calls "the uncool mom:" setting good boundaries, remaining in control, being yourself, picking your battles, and butting out when your daughter needs to manage on her own (which is more often than you think.) My own mother did a generally great job of this, and we are now what one might call "best friends" as adults -- still very much mother-daughter, but with mutual respect, friendship, and tolerance built out of (usually, and usually this was Mom's doing) handling our conflicts in a healthy way when I was a minor. This book is written by a mom who sounds a lot like mine...but even my mom could have learned something from her.

What do teenage girls really want from their mothers? British Psychologist Terri Apter offers uncommon wisdom about the "tricky equation" between a daughter's identity and that of her mother. Challenging the idea that girls want to reject dear old mom, Apter suggests that most battles between mothers and daughters are fought to transform the relationship rather than trash it. Arguments become a daughter's way of asking two essential questions: "How can I get my mother to see me the way I am or the way I want to be?" and "How can I keep this important relationship up-to-date and useful to me?" By focusing on how daughters can remain attached to their mothers as they grow, each chapter underlines conflict as means for a daughter to define herself. Apter avoids generalities and targets smart specifics with examples, strategies and sample conversations. She offers an anatomy of a mother-daughter meltdown, nails four patterns of teen lying, and offers guidelines for dialogue about rules and risk assessment. She explains how to navigate food fights, discouraging words, harsh hyperbole ("you are ruining my life!") and the "I know that already" sex talk. Battle fatigued mothers--and the daughters who want to love them without leaving them--will welcome Apter's hopeful, insightful approach. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Understand what your teenage daughter really meansand learn to use your arguments to strengthen your bond with her.
Mothers and teenage daughters argue more than any other child-parent pairon average every two-and-a-half days. These quarrels, Terri Apter shows, are attempts to negotiate changes in a relationship that is valued by both mothers and daughters. A daughter often feels her mother doesn't know or understand her, and by fighting hopes to force her mother into a new awareness of who she really is, how she has changed, and what she is now capable of doing and understanding. But mothers often misinterpret their daughter's outbursts as signs of rejection, and they may pull back feeling hurt and confused. Through case studies and conversations between mothers and daughters, Apter shows mothers how to interpret the meanings behind a daughter's angry words and how to emerge from arguments with a new closeness.

useful, but not necessarily helpful.......2004-12-22
I'm a mother of 3 daughters - the eldest a teenager. I was excited about a book to help me throught these very difficult years.
I found the book to be very well researched and an easy read. The author was amazingly detached though she is the mother of 2 daughters. The author offered her sympathy to mothers - that's certainly appreciated.
The dialogs were interesting; specifically repeating the horrible things that other girls say to their mothers. The dissections of various conversations were wothwhile.
However, while I understand that including other family members make any analysis more difficult, the fact that these pairs seemed to exist in a vacuum (very little mention of other parents and especially siblings) made the situations appear unreal and therefore difficult to apply to normal families.
The book was useful in interpretting the hidden meanings of some accusations that a teenage girl uses. The strategies and advise on how to improve one life with a teenage girl as part of a familty were scant. Only in those extreme cases of eating disorders were several approaches discussed. In essence, the message I took away was, "we should just get thru this knowing that it can't last forever." I could accept this about the pain associated with childbirth, but not the behavior of a nasty teenage daughter - it can go on for years and affects not only the long suffering mother but everyone in the house right down to the dog.
I found it painful to finish this book since I had some pretty high hopes when I began it and the author clearly understands her subject well. I think fathers could benefit from reading this book as they don't typically understand what might be going on. I would recommend it to other parents.

Reader Friendly.......1998-02-23
"Ernst's book is reader-friendly because of the way it's laid out and the over the counter language it uses. The book also disdains tactfulness for straightforwardness." "...tabbed 'the Ralph Nader of the profession'." Phil Jackman, Baltimore Sun, Baltimore, MD
