Book Description
This edition retains the basic approach and style that has appealed to readers for over fifty years. The first half focuses on fundamental physical and analytical principles. The second half covers applications of those principles to flow in pipes and open channels, lift and drag, fluid machinery, and compressible flow. The final chapter is an introduction to an array of fluid measurements and the instruments for making them.

Probably not the best for an Elementary Fluids course.......2003-05-24
The title of this book is misleading--there is nothing elementary in this book. Flipping through this book one will probably become intimidated by sheer volume of "difficult math". This book might be of great help in a graduate level Fluid Mechanics course, but the definitions, derivations, and concepts in general are too difficult for an undergraduate. If you have a good instructor, he or she will probably be able to simplify things for you, otherwise the book will teach you nothing. Many of the problems/examples, however, seem to be simple enough and can be solved using simple equations, so one wonders why the text goes in to so much detail using esoteric mathematics. If you are an undergraduate, and your instructor makes you buy this book, be sure to get some sort of supplementary outline book, or else you will probably be lost.
generally good.......2000-04-05
this is a generally good book. of course, but as textbooks go, this is worth it. the material is as clear as can be, so that makes it a little easier to deal with an otherwise tough subject.

Book Description
The study of the dynamics of fluids is a central theme of modern applied mathematics. It is used to model a vast range of physical phenomena and plays a vital role in science and engineering. This textbook provides a clear introduction to both the theory and application of fluid dynamics, and will be suitable for all undergraduates coming to the subject for the first time. Prerequisites are few: a basic knowledge of vector calculus, complex analysis, and simple methods for solving differential equations are all that is needed. Throughout, numerous exercises (with hints and answers) illustrate the main ideas and serve to consolidate the reader's understanding of the subject. The book's wide scope (including inviscid and viscous flows, waves in fluids, boundary layer flow, and instability in flow) and frequent references to experiments and the history of the subject, ensures that this book provides a comprehensive and absorbing introduction to the mathematical study of fluid behaviour.
Customer Reviews:
Best Fluid Book Ever.......2001-06-13
This is the clearest book on fluid dynamics that I've seen. It's perfect for physics students who need a quick review of the subject. It does an amazing job of relating the math to the reality. Many of the problems make reference to research as recent as the 1980's. This book isn't the last word on anything (for example the information on instability is only the beginning), but it's an amazing place to start. As for the down sides, the math requirements in my opinion are a little steeper than the back cover implies. It pretty much assumes that you know complex variables and the residue theorem, and although it avoids the more difficult PDEs, it might help to know some things about them. And this isn't really a down side, but a lot of interesting information is tied to the problems, which may bother some readers.
Very pedagogical fluid dynamics book.......2000-09-04
This book is one of the most stimulating books on fluid mechanics that I have come across. It is very carefully written and well organized. The physics behind the phenomena are vividly explained. The subject is, however, mathematically difficult and the book should not be attempted without advanced calculus and vector analysis.
well organized but hard for freshmen.......1998-10-16
This book is well organized and full of examples, but it's will be better to explain more about the math operation and what does it means in the real world.

Book Description
Groundhog Day is a holiday that is largely ignored in children's books. Children know all about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, but have they ever heard about Andrew McGroundhog? In his new book, Peter J. Welling shares a story about how Groundhog Day came into existence with the help of a little Scottish groundhog and his shady shadow. This entertaining book also teaches children a few Gaelic words in the process. One day, Andrew McGroundhog climbed up Hadrian's Heights to go fishing. As he was climbing, he repeatedly heard someone cry out and found that it was his shadow. His shadow was upset about being dragged up the mountain, dunked in the water, and stepped on by a pony. Andrew's shadow wanted the groundhogs to hibernate because winter was too cold for shadows. Andrew then wondered when he could stop hibernating--his shadow said he would give a thumbs-up if it was springtime or would bonk him on the nose if it was winter. Even now, if the groundhogs don't see the thumbs-up, they sleep for six more weeks.
Customer Reviews:
Andrew McGroundhog and His Shady Shadow.......2007-07-14
Andrew McGroundhog and His Shadow is the fictional, somewhat silly account of the founding of Groundhog Day. Andrew McGroundhog has no idea that he has been so very uncaring and unkind towards his shadow until the day his shadow has finally had enough. Andrew and his shadow must make an interesting arrangement to solve their problem.
The animal characters in this book are absolutely charming and completely hilarious. This is one of those books that your child will want to read over and over again- and for once- you won't mind. Truly, people of all ages will be thoroughly entertained by the clever story while learning a little about traditional Scottish traditions and vocabulary.
A pre-hibernation tale.......2006-01-07
Andrew was a very busy Scottish groundhog, what with his love of hiking and fishing. His Shadow didn't like to tag along for those activities and suggested to Andrew that he take it easy and hibernate instead. The Shadow bonked the groundhog on the nose to make his point. Thus is Andrew afraid of his shadow. From that point on, when he saw it as he emerged from his home in February, he ran back inside.
This is by far the oddest Groundhog Day story available on the children's literature market today. The groundhog wears a kilt, knee-high stockings, a hat and a muffler. Not only is the plot strange, but the text is peppered with so many Scottish words that a glossary is a neccesary supplement at the end of the book. As a result, this is a complex approach to an easy subject; perhaps too complicated for the average young reader.
A great book for kids.......2001-03-19
Rarely has a book so captured the essence of childhood than Andrew McGroundhog and his Shady Shadow. I remember when I was a child and can vividly recall bedtime stories with my parents. The books back then were simplistic and did little to enhance my dreams. But this book, full of vibrant illustrations and a wonderfully woven yarn of a tale, is exactly what a young child needs to read before bedtime. On an educational level, the author introduces Scottish terms and includes a short glossary in the back of the book for easy reference. My granddaughter was enthralled on the first reading of this book (since read to her many more times) and with another grandchild on the way I know the enjoyment will continue. Buy this book for your young loved ones.
Charmingly illustrated and highly recommended.......2001-03-12
One day, Andrew McGroundhog climbed up Hadrian's Heights to go fishing. As he was climbing, he repeatedly heard someone cry out and found that it was his shadow. His shadow was upset about being dragged up the mountain, dunked in the water, and stepped on by a pony. Andrew's shadow wanted the Andrew to hibernate like other groundhogs because winter was too cold for shadows. Andrew then wondered when he could stop hibernating when his shadow said he would gives a "thumbs-up" if it was springtime, or would bonk him on the nose if it was winter. Even now, if the groundhogs don't see the thumbs-up, they sleep for six more weeks. Written and charmingly illustrated by Peter Welling, Andrew Mcgroundhog And His Shady Shadow is a thoroughly entertaining and highly recommended addition to any personal, school, or community library picturebook collection for young readers.
What a fun book!.......2001-02-05
I bought Andrew McGroundhog for my niece of 6 years and she loved it. Not only does the author introduce an intriguing and original story about the origins of Groundhog Day, he also supplies a plethora of artwork on each page that compliments the story. (Many books for children add art as an afterthought but McGroundhog is equally balanced between story and art.)
This is very appropriate for young children who are just beginning to read or enjoy having books read to them. The short glossary at the end of the book is the proverbial cherry on top of this fine accomplishment. Mr. Welling deserves every accolade he receives.

Book Description
Will anyone take on Jake Semple?
Jake Semple is notorious. Rumor has it he burned down his old school and got kicked out of every school in his home state.
Only one place will take him now, and that's a home school run by the Applewhites, a chaotic and hilarious family of artists. The only one who doesn't fit the Applewhite mold is E.D. -- a smart, sensible girl who immediately clashes with the unruly Jake.
Jake thinks surviving this one will be a breeze . . . but is he really as tough or as bad as he seems?

My Review.......2007-06-14
Surviving The Applewhites is a awesome book and I think a lot of people would like it. Jake is my favorite character in the book because he dresses wierd. I think I'm like Jake because we both dress cool to get attention. This book makes me feel happy for Winston the dog because since Jake came the dog started being take care of and being loved. I think the kind of people hat the book would be good for is ages 6-12. I would like to read another like this book but not read it again.
My favorite part was when Destiny starts cussing. My least favorite part was the beginning of the story.
This Year's Delinquent is..........2007-03-16
Surviving the Applewhites is an awesome book! It's about a delinquent kid named Jake. Who goes through a lot of hard stuff in his life. His parents went to jail for selling wine. Jake smokes, cusses and has bright red hair in spikes. Also there is a rumor that Jake burned down his last school. So he now goes to a school named Creative Academy held by a crazy family called the Applewhites. They are the only people who believe there is any good in Jake. The book is about Jake going through changes. Jake has a little admirer named Destiny Applewhite! Destiny is trying everyway possible to be just like Jake. Jake also has a little admirer the Applewhites' dog named Winston. He looooooooooves Jake!!! He always barks when Jake leaves the house. E.D. one of the Applewhite girls doesn't care for Jake at all. She thinks he is absolutely disgusting in everyway. Read the Book to find out what changes Jake makes and what choices he decides to make. And to find out what weird things Destiny does to try to be like Jake.

For my son.......2007-01-15
My son was required to read this book for class. Instead of going to the library and checking it out I figured I would buy it here and donate it to the class when he was done. He read it and said it was a really good book.
I want to be an Applewhite!.......2007-01-08
I bought this book for my children, but I have to admit that I have read it several times over myself! Stephanie Tolan captures the essence of a whacky homeschooling family just perfectly. I love the way the parents encourage the children to follow their own dreams. I'd absolutely love to see a sequel, as the Applewhite family is too amazing to limit to just one book! I recommend this for kids at a grade 5 or higher reading level. There is reference to smoking, arson, and bad language, but in the end, even the "bad" kid turns out to be a winner. This might be just the thing to help a smart kid in poor circumstances to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The novel you wished you read!!.......2006-12-01
Jake Semple, a boy of destruction, started living with the Applewhite family about a year ago. His adjusment to his new home was awkward. The Applewhites were an artistic family. E.D., a nonartistic Applewhite, was the only one who actually helped Jake get settled in. Although they didn't get along very well, it was her duty to welcome him with open arms. With Randolph, the Applewhite father, constructing his play and Sybil, the Applewhite mother, building her novel, the Applewhite clan was very busy all the time. When things start to go wrong with Randolph's play, everyone's life is turned upside down! There whole life starts to revovle around the play. With teamwork and responsibility, the family manages to pull it together. I definitely feel like this book was absolutely amazing! You kids should definitely read this book.

Surviving the Applewhites is a pretty cool book.
Jake is my favorite character. I like his hair and his necklace and his eyebrow ring.
When Jake went to get the butterfly for E.D that is like me because I would do that for a nice person too.
It makes me sad for Jake because he isn't with his parents. It makes me think about when I am bad in school.
Teenage boys would like this book better than girls.
I like the beginning when he first got to the farm and starts to know people.
When it's E.D's turn it gets boring.
I would read this book again but I want to read another very good book like the first one.

Surviving The Applewhites.......2004-05-26
Stephanie Tolan has produced perhaps one of the greatest books I have ever read. It shows young children that just because something is bad doesnt mean it can't become good. Jake Semple is the bad boy, he has been expelled from numerous schools, even burning one down. He is then sent to Whits End, a school ran by the Applewhites. They are a crazy family running a school for the arts. E.D., the only sane one, does not like Jake. He makes here feel weird. Jake feels the same about E.D. Jake though is befriended by the littlest Applewhite, Destiny. He shows Jake that being a good kid isnt so bad. Jake becomes friendly to all and even lands the lead roll in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. Jake becomes a great kid and learns a lesson about life. This is a great book to teach values to young children around the world.
APPLEWHITE REVIEW.......2004-05-12
SURVIVING THE APPLEWHITES, BY STEPHANIE TOLAN, IS ONE OF THE BEST AND MOST INTESTING BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ. THIS BOOK IS UNIQUE AND FUNNY AT THE SAME TIME. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR 6TH GRADE AND UP. THE VOCABULARY IS NOT VERY STRONG BUT THE BOOK IS EASILY UNDERSTOOD. I WAS INTERESTED IN THE BOOK THE WHOLE TIME I WAS READING IT AND IT FELT AS IF I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN.THIS WAS A TREMENDOUS BOOK.
