Customer Reviews:
Good with the bad.......2007-10-08
Good: textbook engages form AND context. Attempts to combine multiplicity of legitimate approaches to music, reflecting postmod. emphasis on culture and function rather than just form, theory and "greats" from Western tradition. Appropriate length for course of likely nonmajors and 100 level.
Bad: sloppy transitions - very choppy, unbalanced shifts between formal components and the situating of those components into a cultural setting. Basically, it is a poorly written attempt at getting away from the dated music appreciation model. Maybe it could work with supplemental materials?
Good Scope, Bad Definition.......2005-10-02
The professor for my general education music appreciation course picked this book because she likes its emphasis on world music and the way that it is organized around the five elements of music. I really like this structure as well. What I don't like so much is when she has to say, "Oksy, this is what the book says, but that's a horrible definition of phrase," for example. "This is the definition we will use." Now, obviously any college course isn't built around a book, but goodness, that doesn't excuse bad information, or lack of information! My professor also remarked, sarcastically, "I like how there are so few musical terms discussed in Chapters 7 and 8. Oh, go off and read them, you'll see."
No soundscape!.......2001-04-21
Anticipating a lecture on Gregorian chant by Randel, the new president of the University of Chicago, I approached our newly acquired copy of MUSIC IN OUR WORLD through its index. Turning to the indicated pages I saw how Gregorian was discussed in the set of pages overlapping with Hildegard of Bingen. Of course I wanted to hear the contrast between the two musics. Alas! the CD meant to accompany the text was, according to the what we learned from Amazon, NOT YET AVAILABLE. Yet we knew from other sources that the disc had already been produced. Our searches by other routes led always to dead ends. Thus, when attending our president's lecture, I had only the words without any sound in my ears. Curiously, he also offered no samples of the music. Apparently words rather than notes are sufficient for the musical cognoscenti. Would Amazon or the book's publisher please make it EASY for the would-be-customer --who is neither professor nor student of music-- to find the CD meant to accompany the text? Renate Fernandez P.S. I've just learned that what I'm hoping to hear is catalogued as COMPACT DISC SET FOR USE WITH MUSIC IN OUR WORLD by Stuart-White. Again, another curiosity, its authorship is reversed. No matter, I shall soon be able to hear it. I very much like the book's combination of text, illustrations and caption, and boxes. The illustration of textures and melodies on page 113 has me puzzled, however. The absence of words or syllables under the line illustrating Monophonic texture fails to clarify how the line accords or fails to accord with the word. You can see by my comments that there is a potential readership/listenership outside of the circle of pros that is eager to accede simultaneously to MUSIC IN OUR WORLD.

My favorite of Bonta's.......2003-06-16
This is my favorite work of Bonta's. Living in the Appalachian's myself, I rely heavily on her work to let me know when it is time to start looking for those migrating raptors or be on the lookout for those fresh, delicate mountain wildflowers.

Book Description
Appalachian Spring is an extraordinary novel of merriment, passion and conflict. S.L. Baer tells the gripping story of hikers and backpackers from diverse backgrounds who spend a week in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They start into the woods, admiring the beauty of early spring unfolding all around them, but this wonderland swiftly changes to a place where tragedy becomes their stalker. The crisis, against which they are powerless, develops internal struggles as they confront conflicting values, find their strengths and weaknesses, and face their personal fears. Appalachian Spring courses through the world of human emotion, from love and jealousy, to fear and terror, plunging even deeper to the core questions of the human experience.
Customer Reviews:
Suspenseful and Thought-provoking.......2006-06-28
Appalachian Spring throws a number of very believable characters into a challenging life-or-death scenario - the nightmare for which every experienced hiker prepares but never desires to face. As the story switches between the various hiking parties, I continually anticipated the pending fate of each of the characters. In the end, I was treated to fascinating insights into human nature as well as thoughtful examples regarding the spiritual side of all human beings. An entertaining romp into the great outdoors - and no boots required!
Great study in relationships.................2005-03-03
Appalachian Spring is a novel that causes you to search your soul and consider relationships in your life........it portrays adventure challenging both to body and to soul.
A Great New Novel About Life.......2005-02-26
Appalachian Spring: A Novel uses the backcountry of the Smoky Mountains as a backdrop for bringing together a host of unforgettable characters-friends, couples, families and strangers-to see how they react to nature, to each other, and to a crisis. I could identify in some way with each one of them. This was the first book by S.L. Baer that I have read, but if this is any indication, I can't wait for the next one to meet more of his characters.
The story starts off a little slow, but the characterization builds, before the plot starts to sweep you away. Then you can't wait to see what happens. It is begging to be made into a movie. I have read a lot of books, but there is really nothing else like this one.
This book teaches that what we take for granted is often the most important thing in life. For some of us it takes a crisis to learn that. It also teaches us to question the things we think are important. I was right there with each character. I laughed. I cried. I got angry. I got introspective. A very entertaining novel, but don't read it if you don't want to be shaken up a bit.

I have loved this book ever since I heard it read aloud on a Christian radio station in 1989. I had to have it. Ms. Gustafson brings you into the story. You see the town, you know the people. An right along with Jennifer you find out about Tikki, and can't help feeling the same way.

It's the Crutchfields v. the Malones in this lush Romeo and Juliet story about two related California families that have hated each other for generations, even though (or perhaps because) they own adjacent tracks of ocean-view land. Like the rest of her family, 17-year-old Kait Malone blames the Crutchfields for everything, particularly now that her father's in jail for killing Robert Crutchfield in what the Malones claim was an accident. Money is short, because the Malones refuse to sell any of their land, so Kait and her sister must transfer to the public high school under assumed names. And then the unthinkable happens: Kait falls head over heels in love with a beautiful boy named Bram--who turns out to be a Crutchfield. As their romance deepens, Kait's lies about her identity grow ever more complicated. She clings to her conviction that the Crutchfields are monsters--except for Bram--although this belief grows harder and harder to sustain as she meets his family. When Bram's mother loans her the crumbling journals of one of the two sisters who began the feud, Kait finds the truth is a source of compassion. Yet she still postpones her revelation to Bram, as tension builds and the situation finally escalates out of her control. But all ends well, and teen romantics will heave a satisfied sigh at the happily-ever-after ending. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Kaitlin Malone hates the Crutchfields. Her family has feuded with that family for generations, and now her dad is in jail for killing one of them. This legacy of hatred has never been questioned--until Kaitlin falls for a Crutchfield boy. As if that's not bad enough, that boy is the son of the man her father murdered.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, don't read if you enjoy surprises........2007-06-22
I like this book. I like Romeo and Juliet-esque books though... and that's what this is. Very sweet and the emotions Kait felt were shown very clearly in the book. Her journal entries were beautifully written.
Unfortunately, you could tell very easily when things were going to happen, only because it followed the very typical plot of where everything goes down at the big party... and the book ended to suddenly. I definately would read a sequel since many plot lines were left loosely tied or up to the reader to decided.
Reccommended for a fast read.
Scribbler of Dreams.......2007-04-24
Wow... that's all I can say. Less than a day it took me to finish this book, and it kind of got me thinking. I don't really relate to Kait Malone, but I FEEL for her. I can imagine what she's going through, and we kind of have a lot in common when it comes to the whole thing she goes on about, which is her regret.
Let's just say this is a teen romance with meaning, and no sex scenes. Yet it's still beautiful and easy to understand, even though I doubt many of us have gone through what Kait has. But I can feel for her and I can see her pain through glimpses into her private journal, and then I fell in love with the book. It's books like this that make me want to be a wonderful writer, because this is just doing it for me...
Romeo and Juliet Written Again... sort of..........2007-02-06
The Malones and Crutchfeilds despise eachother. Murders between fathers , fights , and court trials fill these two familys relationships.
Now the Malones have to suffer for something their father did. Things get twisted when the Malones are forced to move and go to a new school... did i mention the school is owned by the Crutchfields?
Kait Malone , a talented writer and a loner, meets Bram Crutchfield , a talented artist specializng in sketching and very popular at school , meet eachother. And as if things may not get worse they accidently fall in love. The catch is , Bram doesn't know Kait is a Malone. How long can Kait keep her seceret from Bram?
This book was alright. the plot was good but not original. The writing was wonderful. The only thing is that it was just not interesting enough. I read it in a couple hours and enjoyed it ,but not as much as I could have. It is just something spare and relaxing to do in free time. Not one of my favourites ,but deffinetly not the worst. Buy this book if you are into slightly romantic and well-written easy reading books ,but if you are into something with action and hardcore reading its probably not for you. Ages 12-17
I LOVE IT!.......2006-11-05
I true Romeo and Juliet story in recent time! Two families destined to hate eachother and two teens meant to be together. I loved this book. It made by laugh and cry. I must read for the whole family!
Romeo & Juliet all over again!.......2006-11-02
A great book everybody should read. It's a nowaday Romeo and Juliet. A book about family and true love. Also traditions broken by 2 people. A great story, but a little confusing at first.
