Book Description
A vivid and faithful chronicle of life in the great Northern Forest and a storehouse of valuable information on woodcraft and nature. Over half a century ago, John Rowlands set out by canoe into the wilds of Maine to survey land for a timber company. After paddling alone for several days--"it was so quiet I could hear the drops from the paddle hitting the water"--he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams." He never left. He named the place Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer--timber for a cabin; fish, game and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without. Cache Lake Country exemplifies the classic American notion that what is most worth finding lies far from the tracks of civilization, and that what is most worth doing demands resourcefulness and wit. Here is folklore and philosophy, but most of all wisdom about the woods and the inventiveness and self-reliance they demand. The author explains how to make moccasins, barrel stoves, lean-to shelters, outdoor bake ovens, sailing canoes, and hundreds of other ingenious and useful gadgets, all illustrated in the margins with 230 enchanting drawings by Henry B. Kane.

Life in a cabin in the North Woods.......2007-07-31
I'm going to be a little less enthusiastic, but only a little, than some of the other reviewers here. I really did like this book, but for some reason it just didn't quite pull me into the time, place, space the way it did some others- although it didn't miss by much.
This is a very unique book-probably reminding me of my old Boy Scout Fieldbook (a little more detailed and survival-oriented than the handbook) more than a typical non-fiction work. The illustrations are great as well as occasionally light-hearted, and if you are at all handy or have an engineering or for that matter, culinary bent, you will find plenty of recipes and blueprints for food, tools, gadgets- even crystal radio sets or birch bark canoes. While some of these you'd probably have to find some supplemental information to make, most come so well described and diagrammed that you could probably build them or bake them directly from the book.
For me the best part is the author's midwest and at times almost cowboy way of describing life. His time around rough loggers in the days when horses and two man saws were still the order of the day especially captured my imagination. Like many readers, I'm a lot hermit, and the thought of life in a cabin in the north woods with nothing but snow, bear, moose, and wind has a certain charm, and I'm grateful to Rowlands for giving enough of a story to enjoy a bit of that charm vicariously. An excellent and unique book, and for some it will probably become a treasured possession.
what a great book!.......2007-06-24
I have read a lot of outdoor books over the last 40 years, and this is one of the best. I am going to research the author, John J. Rowlands, because he was obviously a fascinating man who lead a very interesting life. This book tells about 12 months living in a cabin on a lake in Northern Onatario. At the time Rowlands was working as a timber cruiser, evaluating forests for use as lumber. He happened upon his ideal lake and was lucky enough to get stationed there by his company. He was also very lucky to have two great friends living within miles (within signaling distance via the various drums, horns etc. they engineered), on other little lakes. Together the three lived every outdoor boy's dream life of independence and adventure. This book has stuff about canoes, wild animals, sled dogs, snowshoes, knives, axes, the history of the lumber camps, and many boy-scout like craft projects. I just wish it was a lot longer.
Paul Schmitt.......2007-05-15
A good book but I didn't think it was as easy to read as friends lead me to believe. A tremendous amount of reference material, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Cache Lake Country: Life in the North Woods.......2007-01-11
I found the book enlightening and informative. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy and learn from this book.
Most enjoyable book.......2006-11-03
I first read this book in my senior year in high school. Once I rediscovered it I have read it at least once a year. It paints a picture of a world gone by the way and it brings the experience to life. If you love the outdoors, you will find this a pleasure to read. I would recommend it to anyone from 14 years old to 100.

What a Find!.......2007-01-27
Cache Lake Country stands up to the test of time. Out of print now, it is still as relevant and beautiful a testament to the outdoor experience of Rowlands, Kane, and Chief Tibeash as it was in the 50's. If you love nature and the solitary experiences of the wilderness then you'll love this book.
Rowlands is a marvelous writer, for sure, but I was totally smitten with the outstanding black-and-white illustrations of the highly talented illustrator, Henry B. Kane, who brought, humor, fine draughtsmanship, art, and passion together for this book. It's reminiscent in some ways of Joseph Wood Krutch's "The Voice of the Desert" and Abby's "Desert Solitaire" but it takes place in the North Woods (some say Quebec, others say Ontario). I liked this book even better than the two aforementioned because of the great teamwork of Rowlands and Kane.
I'm pleased to find this book again.......2002-12-28
I reviewed this book several years ago, and after accidently stumbling upon my review, the same images, smells, and excitement still come to mind. I just purchased an old copy at many times the original price, and I can't wait to read it again after more than thirty years. It still amazes me to thnk that a simple diary of life in a bygone distant frontier could elicit such a Technicolor panorama in the mind of the reader. Everyone should read this book. It's good for the soul.
Northern woodlife (first person perspective).......2000-04-21
Back in the prehistoric days of the 1970's, I found this small book in my school library. Despite it's small size, it became, and has always been a bible of life in the northwoods. No politics, no social agenda, just a detailed blueprint of the pleasures and perils of living far from the city. The book covers the basics of shelter and winter warmth. It instructs the reader in a variety of skills ( from keeping oatmeal warm until breakfast, to making snowshoes to get along in mid-winter). All in all, I recall it as the first docu-drama that I ever had the pleasure to read. Though it can be labeled as non fiction (of the instructive kind), it has the ability to build endles dreams of pioneer life in the mind of most any reader.
I learned so much and laughed a great deal, too........1999-11-02
Don't we all wish we knew someone like J.J. Rowlands. What a life! He should have been a father; what a wealth of information he might have imparted... ...and what delivery! Couldn't put it down. Thank goodness he left us his book.
Life: a year packed into the pages of a book........1999-03-24
I can only echo the other reviewers to date: this is simply the finest and most memorable book from my youth. The painstaking black and white line drawings embellish a story of life in the Canadian backwoods. The author was well aware that his was a disappearing way of life, when he spent time as a timber overseer on a remote Canadian lake, and his obvious care in crafting his recollections shows his love for that life. I was fortunate enough in my youth to have a chance to canoe 200 miles of Canada not all that far from Cache Lake country - and can only say that Rowland's account rings true. I have made some of the recipies, perched on rock shores above sparkling Canadian waters. I can only add that in a world of quick fixes and patent falsehoods, Cache Lake Country is a collection of truths. If books can truly be friends, this is a best friend.

Ann Marie Brown describes in loving detail 100 trails that span Northern California's beauteous countryside, from the redwoods of Humboldt County to the wetlands, Tahoe, and Yosemite of Central Valley. The trails are lovely, but Brown makes them accessible as well with directions, terrain factors, and the hours your average couch potato will need to walk it. She details each turn and tree stump of interest, where the wild flowers bloom, and the best knoll to climb for a supreme ocean view. She takes the anxiety out of hiking, so there's nothing left for you but to pack a water bottle and go.

Scenic Highlights in Northern California.......2005-12-03
Have you ever wanted to explore an isolated beach, or walk among towering redwoods, or experience a close encounter with wild tule elk? These things are within the realm of just about any fit person, and with far less effort than one might imagine. Ann Marie Brown's 'Easy Hiking in Northern California' is just that; a guide to fabulous wilderness experiences with minimal effort.
This book has a lot to recommend it. Ms. Brown divides Northern California into 8 separate sections and describes numerous hikes in each area. In addition to local history and natural features, Brown also provides careful directions to each trailhead and a detailed description of the route. Lots of black and white photographs accentuate the text and give the reader an idea of what to expect. An "options" heading describes how readers can further explore the trailhead area.
I just love this approach to hiking. The vast majority of trails in this guide are one to three miles long. If you want more of a workout, you can usually combine two or more of the 111 trips listed in a day. On a recent visit to Point Reyes National Seashore, I planned my day around this book. I have no regrets. My vacation was wonderful and this book will be my first resource on other trips to Northern California.
Very useful with precise directions.......2002-04-20
I bought this book after our daughter was born, to serve as a guide to the great outdoors. The book delivered on its promise, we went on two or three hikes in Yosemite valley with our 3 year old daughter. The descriptions in the book helped us pick the hikes and the directions to the trailhead were very helpful. I have also tried several hikes in the San Franciso bay area and always found the directions to reach the trailhead very helpful.
This is a great, easy book to read!.......2000-10-09
We love to hike and found this book to be fun and easy to read. The directions to the hikes are very precise and clear. We just bought the book and have already gone on three of the hikes.
Extremely Helpful.......2000-06-27
Me and my family love to hike and evey weekend we are always trying out new places. When trying out new trails we had no idea what to expect. Sweet, Sad Amazing and wonderful .......2007-01-01
I just finished this amazing book. This story is about a little boy and girl who become best friends in first grade. They stay best friends throughout the rest of the book. Eventually it turns into love and Jessi and Melinda realize that they cant live without eachother. Melinda gets cancer and everything changes. This is my new favorite book my Lurlene McDaniel. All of her books are amazing, but this one has a special something. I love reading the notes, letters, and e-mails that are throughout the story. I cant wait to read more books by this author.
A Rose For Melinda.......2006-07-16
I thought that this book is alright, it was deffinatly a touching and moving book. I didn't like the fact that there is no real dialouge in the whole book. All of the story is told in notes, e-mails, IM's, and diary entries. I thought that in some parts it would be nice to acually see the conversation between Jesse and Melinda. I thought that this was a book worth reading, although not the best one on Lurlene's.
One of Lurlene McDaniel's BEST!.......2006-06-11
My all time favorite book of LM is Telling Christina Goodbye, it was one of the best! Now A Rose For Melinda is my all time favorite book! The book is about true friends, and living life to the fullest. It shows you that even though you may be dyeing, that you should have the best time of your life. This books makes you cry so much. The last few pages are the best, every so often i will find the book and just reread the last pages. If you are looking for a great Lurlene McDaniel book I reccomend this 100 percent!
A Rose for Melinda.......2006-04-10
"Rose for Melinda"
By:Amanda Heyse
Do you enjoy reading books about love and friendship? If you do, "A Rose for Melinda" is a "must read" for you. So, grab a blanket, make your self some hot chocolate, snuggle up on the couch, and enjoy!
"A Rose for Melinda" is a story about friendship and eternal love. Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose have been best friends since kindergarten. But when Jesse's mother and father get divorced Jesse has to leave Melinda and move to California. However, Jesse and Melinda stay in touch for many years. When Melinda becomes diagnosed with leukemia her dreams of becoming a famous ballerina may not work out. During this time everyone in Melinda's family supports her, even Jesse and her friend Bailey.
I would recommend this book to all teenage girls. It is a story about friendship and courage. The importance of true friendship is shown throughout the book. The main character shows her courage by continuing to follow her dream of being a dancer despite her illness.
Together Forever?.......2006-02-10
Lurlene McDaniel writes her books about teens faced with life threatening illnesses. A Rose for Melinda has to do with Melinda Skye and Jesse Rose's relationship with each other. The two of them have been best friends since kindergarten. But when Jesse's parents split, he is forced to move to California with his mom. Melinda is devastated, though she knows that that will not tear their relationship apart. They continue to e-mail, write, and call each other in order to keep in touch. Melinda's biggest dream is to become a famous ballet, and when she gets accepted to the Atlantis Dance Team, she is thrilled. Everything is great for her until one day when she falls. At the hospital, Melinda discovers she has leukemia. While she is battling this disease, everyone is right there beside her, including Jesse and her friend Bailey.
I like that this book could relate to your life, and the things that happened could actually happen. A Rose for Melinda, to me, was a real story. The book focused on a lot of characters, it just wasn't all about one person. What I didn't like about the book, was that it didn't give great details about things, and sometimes you could predict what was going to happen next.
A Rose for Melinda is one of my favorite books, and I would highly recommend it for every girl to read. Some of the parts were sad at times, and that's what made the book good and interesting. Most guys probably wouldn't enjoy this book as much as females would. It's a fast read for any teenage girl.
