The Wandering Bass.......2001-10-23
In my humble opinion, Rick Bass is one of the finest writers working today - period. At his best his work shines with insight and speaks so clearly that it's almost painful to hear the truth articulated so accurately. That said, I confess to being a bit disappointed by this book. There are moments of beauty as always. The story of the mountain lion encountered while out hunting with Colter, for example, is classic Bass. Not only does he capture the intensity and danger of the moment, and manage to bring the personality of the lion alive, but he is able to make us laugh at his own thoughts as he struggles to overcome his fear. Really remarkable.
However, Bass is obsessed by the loss of his dog and what that loss has meant to him. He has already written a lovely book on the subject, but apparently it wasn't enough to ease his pain. In trying to tie the animal's death to his work as a writer and activist in this book, you can tell he's stretching it. It's almost as if the offer to write a book about activism was seen as another opportunity to voice his sorrow. Somehow it just doesn't work.
This is not to say that you shouldn't read this book. If nothing else it offers insight into the inner workings of one of our most gifted writers, but expect to struggle with Bass a bit. For once you get the feeling he hasn't gotten it all worked out, that the words he's chosen aren't quite what he meant to say in some places. To me, this is as valuable, and in some ways more meaningful, than reading the fine tuned stuff. It just isn't as satisfying.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about reading this book for me was the reaction I had when I finished. Ordinarily I have a strong feeling of satisfaction when I come to the end of a Bass book. I put it down and mentally tip my hat to a fellow writer. "Well done!" I say. This time however, I had a completely different response. At the end of Brown Dog of the Yak, I felt unsettled and slightly down. Even more unusual was the urge I had to look Bass up, take him by the hand, look him in the eye, and say, "It'll be all right, you'll see."
On the love of wilderness and activism.......2000-03-19
There is nowadays shortage of true love stories. This is a book about a love. Love of nature and wilderness and a fine dog. As in good love story, there is ecstasy in living with nature and in descriptions of beauty of his country, but there is also suffering and struggle and rage. In the unique blend of keen observations of naturalist and hunter, of ruminations on literary pursuits, and of environmental activism, Bass paints most intricate tapestry on narrative. One of best nature writings. One of the best appeal for preservation of our vanishing wilderness. Let us all hope that somewhere in our government there is a reader who will be touched by grace of this book and be compelled to act.

All the Diver needs from a Guide Book.......2001-11-16
There are those Publishers who know how to produce Guide Books for Divers and those Divers who are able to provide the goods. Aqua Quest and Cancelmo are an excellent combination.
"Diving Cayman Islands" measures 10" x 7" and is another guide in the medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest. These particular publishers set high standards in terms of quality of information and standard of photography and this book is a worthy addition to the series.
The book is clearly laid out with chapters on the islands, accommodations, shopping, nightlife, an overview of the diving, specific dive sites and marine life. The first chapter begins with a précis of the country's history followed by details of the present day. This is followed by a map and all that essential information such as climate currency, dress, electricity, entry/exit requirements, getting, there, medical, language, time, water, postal - and, if I have forgotten something, this book did not.
The overview of Diving includes all the relevant information the diver needs to know including; boat diving, conservation, dive operators on the 3 Cayman islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman), regulations, equipment, safety, shore diving and more.
As one might expect, the specific dive sites are then divided into those 3 islands with a chapter dedicated to each. These commence with a map of each island with all the relevant sites numbered and displayed on that map before each site is finally described with an adequate narrative and relevant depth. It was nice to see the Russian Frigate off Cayman Brac being featured in a guide book - without this outstanding dive site being allowed to take over and dominate the entire work. The book then concludes with a chapter on Marine Life and an Appendix containing Emergency Information.
This is a well-rounded book with everything supported by some pretty stunning and imaginative photography. For anyone considering a trip to this corner of the Caribbean - this is the only book you will require.

Outstanding photos and an excellent overview of the diving........1999-06-04
I aquired this book just prior to a trip to the Caymans. The general information about the islands was thorough and very helpful. The details about each island - people, geography, accomadations, dive sites, etc. assisted me in making a decision on which island to visit. I ended up in Little Cayman where the diving was spectacular! We also enjoyed a day of diving on Cayman Brac. I had the book on our dive boat and I have to say it was thoroughly enjoyed by many divers. Some would reference the dive site before we reached it and others enjoyed reading the reviews after taking the plunge. All the dive site info was thorough and accurate. The photographs are excellent. I would highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to the Caymans or anyone who enjoys beautiful underwater photos.

Not good for snorkeling sites.......2007-01-21
I bought this book with the hopes of learning about good snorkeling sites at Grand Cayman. I wanted information so that I could decide what places would be worth our time and would be okay to take our 9 year to (as well as a map of the location). I was quite disappointed. It describes numererous dive sites and gives a "star rating" for snorkeling of these sites. However, it does not really address snorkeling individually. There are several well known snorkel sites that are not even mentioned in this book. Thankfully, I learned about these sites over the internet so that we can enjoy them during our stay. This book did not help me prepare at all. I imagine it is good for those who dive though.
One of the most definitive books on dives sites for Cayman!.......2003-04-16
Lawson has continued with the attention to detail that he began in the 1st Edition with the best guide to dives sites for the Caymans.
Very logical layout... format is easy to read and particularly interesting to follow...
There are books that might do a good job of describing a particular site or two, but this book is the most comprehensive I've found.

Snorkeling guide? What Snorkeling Guide?.......2002-04-25
I bought this book sight unseen because most of Lonely Planets guides are very good. However there are almost no references to snorkeling in the book. The info is all about diving and even that is not very in depth. Adding snorkeling to the title seems to be a blatent attempt to sell more books.
Better Choices Elsewhere........2000-09-28
After using Lonely Planet books exclusively to tour Europe, I expected the same thoroughness in this book. I was surprised how incomplete this book is. My friend did pick a better book while in Grand Cayman, unfortunately the title eludes me at this time. Lonely Planet only touches the surface on the available dive sites but if you want quick easy reading without high expectations then this is the book for you.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful psychological thriller........2006-04-29
I'd like to start my review by saying that I am currently twenty-five years old and I still have a copy of this book on my shelf.
The reason for this is when I was 13 years old, there was a series of horror books out called Point Horror. I was an avid reader at that age and I saved up some money to buy myself some books from this series. This was the very first book I bought, so it will always be special to me.
I must admit that when I read this book, I didn't quite understand it, but this was because I did not know at the time that this book was actually the last book in a trilogy (the other two are called The Fog and The Snow) and that it was picking up where the other two books left off.
So, I got the other two and read them, then re-read this book.
It was absolutely brilliant. The story revolves around thirteen-year old Christina who gets involved in a terrifying psychological mind game with the two malicious Shevvingtons.
She watches two friends - Anya, a beautiful, brilliant senior collapse mentally and Dolly, an innocent sicth-grader become a trembling nervous wreck.
In this book, the Shevvingtons turn their attention to her and attempt to destroy her ...with fire.
I loved this series back then, and I still love it now.
A surprising read.......2006-01-26
I'll admit it. I'm actually not a fan of Cooney's. I find her stories to be trite and two-dimensional for the most part (not to mention that - speaking as someone with bipolar disorder - I find her portrayals of the mental health community in many of her books to be rather questionable at best in their accuracy) and yet I am a huge fan of this series and have been since its release. To me this series was where she started to show the maturity you find in her more recent writings instead of the R.L.Stine-esque saw-it-coming-a-mile-away pulp horror books that kept me entertained in like the fourth grade. I'm twenty-five and I still reread this series time and again.
The outward plot is fairly straightforward: Christina Romney is a thirteen-year old girl who has come from a small rural island and a very sheltered life to live on mainland Maine for her first year at middle school (seventh grade). The couple who are boarding her and a handful of other students from the island are Arnold and Candy Shevvington, the school principal and the seventh-grade English teacher. While she likes them at first, Christina quickly catches on that there's something very off about the Shevvingtons, and is convinced after watching her friend Anya slowly collapse in front of her own eyes (Book 1: The Fog). She very nearly lost her friend Dolly in the second book, The Snow - managing not only to save her but also to help Anya recover some of the damage done in the first book's timeline.
In this final installment, the Shevvingtons have turned all their resources to silencing Christina, perhaps determined that they will have at least one successful victim this year, perhaps deciding that the irony of destroying the one person who has been trying to bring them down all year would be too good to pass up. Either way, the Shevvingtons expound on the rumor they started in the previous installment - that Christina likes to play with fire a little too much. In this book she faces the challenge now not only of ultimately discrediting the Shevvingtons and aiding her friends... but of saving herself.
To me this series does a good job of juxtaposing the very ordinary struggles of a student in her first year of middle school (difficult assignments, unfair teachers, noticing boys) against the very dark and chilling theme of a psychological thriller. She isn't just facing a mean or unfair teacher, she is facing two sadists who delight in destroying people just because they can. It's a very frightening idea, having no one believe you when all you can do to fight back is tell the truth.
The first book in this series nearly lost me with the first few chapters - the man in the wet suit, the changing poster - it seemed silly, but as the books progressed and Cooney seemed to settle more into her world and the scenario she had written out, things began to tie together and become cohesive, an interesting read that made me actually go out and buy the series instead of rolling my eyes at the various improbabilities of the situation Christina has found herself in.
In short - they are a fun read, I like them a lot. Now go buy them. :)
It's okay..........2005-09-25
It was all right of a book... well, I'd say more exciting than the first two, but some parts still dragged a bit.
Great Serries!.......2005-07-22
This is a great series (Fire, Fog, Snow)! It is my favorite Caroline B. Cooney series.
The greatest evil.......2005-06-15
In the world, the greatest evil is the one in people you think you can trust. That is the Sevingtons. They are evil on two legs. They also embody the greatest fear. The fear of when you are right, and in danger, but nobody belives you. Book three of three.
