4 out of 5 stars Systematists beware!.......2005-11-28

Plant taxonomists and systematists and other sticklers for keeping up on the most modern plant names (always changing as we learn more about DNA vs. observation alone) might balk at this book. Or even get their posies in a knot!
But for the rest of us mortals, Britton and Brown has some of the best drawings packed into these volumes. The attention to detail is incredible - the USDA PLANTS database uses these very drawings (and descriptions) in it's identification of species. These books simply are a classic guide for identification. It's true, once you've pinned down what it is here, you can go to a more modern guide for more modern information. But you're more likely to get a color photo of just the flower and not the rest of the plant! Very frustrating. My advice - have this book (this series) in addition to new field guides. Remind yourself how much work people used to put into this art and science of taxonomy.

4 out of 5 stars A heck of a deal.......2005-06-27

This book (and its companions) is cheap! It has illustrations of just about every species it covers. Despite the carping from the taxonomist it is a heck of a deal. Once you get the plant identified in B&B it is an easy matter to go to another, more recent book, which has synonyms (alternative botanical names) and find out what it is called these days. Plant names are forever changing in mysterious ways not at all understood by those outside the realm of taxonomists. No other publication has this many illustrations -- and most of them are at least adequate.

Good, inexpensive material for starting out in the study of vegetation.

1 out of 5 stars Reprint of 1913 edition with "wrong names"-- save your money.......1998-01-10

Save your pennies for a copy of the 1952 edition (out of print) from a used book dealer. The 1913 edition uses a set of names known as "American Code" that botanists haven't used since the 1950's; the services of a professional taxonomist is practically required to update the changes, and few people will know what you're talking about if you use an "American Code" name for a plant. The 1952 edition updates all of that, and includes quite a few more species. In my opinion, Dover did a real disservice to botany by reissuing the 1913 edition. Kay Lancaster (plant taxonomist)

5 out of 5 stars Extremely comprehensive botanical tool.......2007-10-08

This monumental classic of botany remains unsurpassed as the most comprehensive and reliable work on the flora of the Northeastern United States and adjacent parts of Canada. An encyclopedic collection of information, it illustrates and describes every species, from the ferns upward, recognized as distinct by botanists and growing wild from Virginia to the Northern reaches of Labrador, and as far West as Kansas and Manitoba. This second edition, materially revised and enlarged, covers 4666 species, identifying each species by its popular plant-names as well as by Latin nomenclature. Each plant is also very well illustrated in great detail! Whether student or professional, this is the bible of Northern U.S. and Canada plant identification!

This intriguing and ground-breaking book is the first in-depth study of the development of philosophy of science in the United States during the Cold War. It documents the political vitality of logical empiricism and Otto Neurath's Unity of Science Movement when these projects emigrated to the US in the 1930s and follows their de-politicization by a convergence of intellectual, cultural and political forces in the 1950s. Students of logical empiricism and the Vienna Circle treat these as strictly intellectual non-political projects. In fact, the refugee philosophers of science were highly active politically and debated questions about values inside and outside science, as a result of which their philosophy of science was scrutinized politically both from within and without the profession, by such institutions as J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. It will prove absorbing reading to philosophers and historians of science, intellectual historians, and scholars of Cold War studies.

Most students of twentieth century philosophy are familiar with the story of the Vienna Circle, that movement of philosophically minded scientists and scientifically minded philosophers that created the philosophy known as logical positivism in central Europe following WW I. Many of its leading figures like Rudolf Carnap, Otto Neurath, Herbert Feigl and so on, are still remembered today and their writings are still read by analytical philosophers. And most students of twentieth century philosophy tend to think of this movement has having been devoted to a highly technical philosophy centering around modern logic and the philosophy of science. What most people don't remember about this movement is that in its origins at least, while its concerns did indeed center around developments in modern logic and the philosophy of science, they were by no means limited to those subjects. This should be evident to anyone who has ever read the manifesto of the Vienna Circle - "The Scientific Conception of the World: The Vienna Circle" which was authored by two of its leading figures - Otto Neurath and Rudolf Carnap. In this manifesto, Neurath and Carnap made it clear that their concerns extended beyond logic and science to encompass all aspects of society and culture including the arts, education, and politics. They made clear their connections with and commitment to socialism, and they even cited Karl Marx as one of the thinkers to which they looked up to. Neurath as an avowed Marxist, even went so far as to declare that in the future, the proletariat would become "the bearer of science without metaphysics."

Yet most people who are familiar with the logical empiricists think of their movement as having been highly apolitical or they may embrace the image of them that has been handed down to us by the Frankfurt School (i.e. Max Horkheimer, Herbert Marcuse) who portrayed the logical empiricists as having been rather bloodless technocrats who were at least tacitly conservative. How did a philosophical movement which had emerged within the social democratic culture of "red" Vienna, come to develop such an image? Well, George Reisch in his lucidly written, *How the Cold War Transformed Philosophy of Science*, gives us at least a part of the answer. In this book, Reisch explores the reception of logical empiricism in the United States, with a special concentration on the fate of the Unity of Science movement which was founded by Neurath and which was continued, after his death, by the philosopher and physicist, Philipp Frank. As Reisch describes it, the Unity of Science movement was committed to demonstrating the fundamental unity of the sciences including the natural sciences, the behavioral sciences and the social sciences, and the Unity of Science movement was interested in using social science to explore how economic, political and cultural factors have shaped the development of science. As Reisch points out, the Unity of Science movement drew upon Marxist ideas while eschewing the dogmatism of dialectical materialism, which it dismissed as metaphysics. Its leading figures like Neurath and Frank were democratic socialists who were committed to using the methods of science to help create a fairer, more just society. But in the end, it seems that instead of transforming American society, the Unity of Science movement withered and died, and logical empiricism, itself, became shriveled in its concerns, abandoning its former political commitments in the name of scientific neutrality. George Reisch believes that the witchhunting climate of the McCarthy period of the 1950s had more than a little to do with this transformation, and he documents the extent to which people like Carnap and Frank were subjected to FBI surveillence and harassment while becoming isolated within the academy as it embraced the dogmas of cold war anticommunism.

All readers who are interested in the history of logical positivism, in twentieth century philosophy, or in the history of the American academy during the McCarthy period should find this well written book to be of great interest.

Perez' novel is a young adult novel in a similar genre to _Johnny Tremain_: historical fiction with a considerable amount of gore. The scenes of violence in this story, which centers on the Battle of Gettysburg, are well-written and appropriate for the subject but I would think they would be too graphic for some young readers. Perez presents a Shaara-esque Gettysburg with a befuddled Lee and a Longstreet in the right. Her research fails her at one point as she places the Stonewall Brigade in the night assault on Culp's Hill (they were not engaged there until the next day) and the Second Virginia with the rest of the brigade (they were detailed as skirmishers on the far left throughout the battle, which is why they had only one man, Wesley Culp, killed in action). Most readers, of course, won't even notice this error. They may, on the other hand, find her presentation of young people involved on opposite sides of the war a little shallow, and her conclusion with the Gettysburg Address a little routine. Moments of interesting, original language do, however, lift this book somewhat above the general swamp.

I thought that this book started out boring and almost as soon as the war started, it picked up into a fast paced "horror" novel of what it would be like to live in this time period. I had to read this book for a college course and i thouht it was a great read for us and I expect that even kids will enjoy history in the form of a story!

If you love battles, battle strategies, and battle grit, this is the Gettysburg book for you. There are some "human interest" portions, but mostly, detailed battle. I teach this book in Jr. High. The kids loathe it, except for the battle-lovers. We joke at the end that we all want t-shirts sporting the phrase "I survived the Slopes of War". But if you like battle scenes, hey, go for it.

Hwang Sun-won (1915-2000) is one of modern Korea's masters of narrative prose. Trees on a Slope (1960) is his most accomplished novel—one of the few Korean novels to describe in detail the physical and psychological horrors of the Korean War. It is an assured, forceful depiction of three young soldiers in the South Korean army during the latter stages of the war: Hyon-t'ae, the arrogant and overconfident squad leader; the stolid and dependable Yun-gu; and "the Poet" Tong-ho. The war affects the men in different ways. Before he can return home, Tong-ho takes his own life after shooting an officer and a prostitute. Hyon-t'ae, finding himself removed from situations of mortal danger, spends most of his time drinking; in the end he is arrested for abetting in the suicide of a young girl. Only Yun-gu is able to make the successful transition to postwar life. His ability to survive the encroachments of others, exploit limited resources, and capitalize on the lessons of harsh experience make him emblematic of Korea over the centuries.

Trees on a Slope will introduce an English-reading audience to an important voice in modern Asian literature.

I liked the book becuase I'm studying Korean now and as far as Korean literature translated into English is concerned this book is very good. I think that some parts of the book are akward to read becuase it's hard to convey and idea along with understood culture while translating. But the content of the book is impactful and slightly mysterious.

This book has a good promise but ultimately falls short of covering what the title proclaims. First of all, the version I got didnt have the games attached to the book. This was sad, since the author spends some precious pages describing the rules of the games I did not get. There are only 64 pages in this book. I actually found the text very interesting, but the illustrations kill this book. Its simly a collection of bad quality black and white engravings and sketches from the period, plus some heraldic designs IN BLACK AND WHITE. Some original illustrations, ala Osprey would have been much nicer. Oh, and by the way, not a single word on medieval wargames. Terence Wise has a much cheaper book about medieval warfare, that has a nice section on wargames. And it was much cheaper.
