Book Description
Until recently, the production of fruits by plant, their consumption by animals (frugivory) and the relevance of these to seed dispersal have attracted less attention than pollination biology. However, since the 1970s they have started to gain more prominence and now give rise to more research funding, seminal papers and international symposiums. This book contains chapters adapted from the Third International Symposium-Workshop on Frugivores and Seed Dispersal held in August 2000 in Rio Quente, Brazil.
Customer Reviews:
Frugivory, a refreshing review.......2003-01-06
This is an excellent book. A thorough summary of an interesting field in ecological research, plentiful of new approaches and creative research. The chapters are well assembled despite their obvious internal heterogeneity- they are the contributed papers to an international symposium. They summarize the state of the art of the seed dispersal and frugivory field and set the path for future developments. It's an important reference for those interested not only on this specific field, but also on general ecology and conservation biology. It's an ideal text for courses due to the braod scope of the subjects and the many examples it has. Highly recommended.

Ingestion and dispersal: direct and indirect effects of frugivores on seed viability and germination of Corema album (Empetraceae) [An article from: Acta Oecologica]
M. Calvino-Cancela
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Digital
ASIN: B000RR1CXU |
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Acta Oecologica, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The effect of gulls, blackbirds and rabbits on the viability and germination of Corema album seeds are compared. Frugivores can affect seed viability and germination (1) directly, through the effect of ingestion and (2) indirectly, dispersing seeds to different sites with different conditions. These two major factors in the quality of a seed disperser are not necessarily concordant in direction and magnitude. Gulls and blackbirds have similar direct effects, being much better than those of rabbits, due to the low probability of germination of seeds within rabbit pellets. Seed germination occurs mainly in the open ground, particularly in the sparse scrub, and is very low under vegetation cover. This pattern becomes crucial determining the indirect effects of seed dispersers that will depend on their capacity to carry seeds to the most suitable sites for germination. Gulls and rabbits disperse most of seeds to open ground, exerting a positive indirect effect on germination, whereas blackbirds disperse seeds mainly under shrubs, thus exerting a negative indirect effect. Direct and indirect effects on seed germination are concordant for gulls but discordant for blackbirds and rabbits. Gulls were the best dispersers; the overall probability of germination for a seed dispersed by gulls was 17.59%. The quality of blackbirds and rabbits was relatively low (3.49% and 1.17%, respectively). Frugivores seem to be essential for germination of C. album seeds, not as much for their direct effects but for their ability to carry seeds to suitable sites.

Best, Most Street-Wise guide to London.......2003-08-06
I've picked up the weekly Time-Out magazine for years and used it as a hip-pocket guide whenever I was in London. Time Out's comprehensive guidebook has now become my 'bible' for slumming around my favorite foreign city. If you are brand-new -- or have only the faintest idea how to navigate around London -- this guide will have you roaming the city like a native in no time. All the pub/nightclub/hotel/sightseeing attractions are keyed to the nearest Underground station, with detailed maps in the back of inner London streets and the different Metro routes. Their pub recommendations are a little slanted to the slick and trendy (I'm a buff of the ancient ones where folks like Ben Jonson might have drunk). Still, it's indispensible to enjoying London. Cheers!
Easily the best London guide, with a few caveats.......2001-08-18
Having read most of the guidebooks on London, I'm inclined to say Time Out's is the best. Reader-friendliness is much improved over previous editions now that they have full-color photos and graphics. With typical British candor, they reveal the truth behind tourist junk like Madame Tussaud's and the Rock Circus (i.e. they should be avoided), and they offer some excellent primers for checking out sights beyond the standard tourist realm. On the other hand, they seem to forget that this is primarily a guide for travelers visiting the city for perhaps a week or two, not a throw-in-the-kitchen-sink book for locals. The guide is perhaps a bit *too* comprehensive, going into levels of minutia that are far too detailed for the average tourist. It also may be a bit too "British" for some American tourists, focusing too much on things of interest to Brits that Americans don't particularly care about. Finally, I intensely dislike two things about this guide: that they employ the same tiny font used in their weekly Time Out magazines, which is difficult even for strong-sighted people to read without squinting, and that (like a number of other guides) they accept ads from businesses listed in the guide, which to me seriously undermines their journalistic objectivity.
Handy, up-to-date guide has multitude of URLs..........2001-06-19
When you arrive in London, your first step should be to buy the weekly "what's on" magazine Time Out. Now you can go one better, and before you leave home buy the Time Out London guide.
Updated annually, it covers all the usual topics -- where to stay, where to eat, what to see -- but it is particularly well-written, includes clear directions, and has the wonderful bonus of URLs to an astonishing number of the places it reviews. Want to see the menu of that charming pub in Soho? There's the URL. How about checking on the availability of tickets for a Football match?
An absolutely invaluable guide, to read and research ahead, and to take with you when you go.

Customer Reviews:
The Night Is For Hunting.......2006-12-21
The book The Night is for Hunting is a sequel and an excellent, well-written book
by John Marshen. It is about a group of teenagers who are caught up in a war. The group
comes upon a Circle of friends that are starving, dirty kids who mug them. When enemy
soldiers envied the bombed city, they head for there hideout, hell. The kids that journey
to hell only to find it have been overrun with enemy soldiers. After the solders are
supposedly gone, the kids disappear. With one of them dead and the rest with gashes and
broken bones, there is no hope for them. Whale the teenagers are gun fighting with
Themselves and the remaining, growing treat of the enemy soldiers. With another kid
dead, they decide to find there back to hell. When they get back, they find bodies
in addition, one teenager dead. Together the teenagers and the kids team up and fight off
the enemy. Only ending in disaster for them. With little ammunition and even less hope,
they attempt to rob a food truck for food, but only getting them arrested. Now they
decided they have to break out. Will they survive? After all life is like a car chase, fast
and unpredictable.
I strongly recommend this book to those who thirsts for adventure. The Night is
For hunting is a truly awesome book.
Book 6 of 7 in Tomorrow Series.......2005-11-11
This may be the weakest volume in the Tomorrow series. It is still a non-stop page turner, but it didn't have the action you'd expect after reading the first 5 volumes. The story is mostly about dealing with a band of feral orphans of the war. They cause constant trouble and frustration for Ellie, and the others. This is the only book in the series that leaves a cliffhanger at the end to get you crying for the finale...which I will start to read as soon as I finish this review.
The greatest war story/ comming of age tail ever told.......2002-06-30
I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book
Very good, as always.......2002-04-20
The Tomorrow series may be the best seven books I've ever read. John Marsden is an excellent writer, and he almost make me think that this war is real.
But this book probably is the worst of the seven. It wasn't such a thrill reading it as the others, as this book's just made to build up the tension for the grand finale in "The Other Side of Dawn". The only thing that really happens is that they run a daycare center for some feral kids, and that they get aware of soldiers lurking outside Hell.
Luckily, Marsden can with his spell-binding writing still capture the reader in this book.
The best read in the world.......2002-01-23
This is the story of the century. This is a definite must read. This is part of one of the most phenominal series of this century. This gripping story will have you guessing. The details will set a scene all its own. With a cliffhanger, it will leave you begging for the next book.

Book Description
The tough, caring, and distinctive John Marquez is back. Booklist lauded him as "far and away the most inventive new detective hero." The San Francisco Chronicle raved "readers may find themselves wanting to buy this guy Marquez a drink just to keep him talking." And The Chicago Tribune gave high praise to the way author Kirk Russell "makes us quickly believe in Marquez and his cause." In this gripping new crime novel, former federal drug agent Marquez again pushes the boundaries of safety and politics when he takes his team of Fish and Game officers on a dangerous operation in pursuit of bear poachers. Night Game hits hard and moves fast toward a finish that ricochets through wilderness, backwoods towns, and the darker recesses of love and greed. A second novel that delivers -- and firmly establishes a great series.
Customer Reviews:
Playing For Keeps in "Night Game" by Kirk Russell.......2006-10-03
In this sequel to "Shell Games" John Marquez returns and this time he is on the hunt for bear poachers. Marquez runs a Special Operations Unit within the California Department of Fish and Game. Trafficking in bear parts and products of bears, such as bear bile, is very illegal and as such, can be very lucrative. To stop such actions, undercover operations are needed and take considerable time to build cases under intense risk to personnel.
Marquez along with his team have been undercover working a case built from a tip Marquez does not entirely trust. Clearly, somebody is trafficking in bear parts and could be connected to a bear farm and Marquez has managed to gradually work his way into a shadowy network of paranoid sellers. At the same time, he doesn't trust the snitch who gave him the tip as some of the pieces of information he passed on simply don't add up.
Along with bear trafficking, El Dorado County California seems to be having a bit of a murder problem. A couple of years ago a murder occurred and Detective Jack Kendall was unable to solve it. Now, another murder has happened and there are links between the two cases. This time a geology student, known for involving himself with pro bear support groups against bear farming, bear poaching and the like while working on his thesis was killed and his body was found in the area known as the Crystal Basin, behind Barrett Lake. Kendall wants to know everything Marquez has in case there is overlap with his case.
What follows is a strong and increasingly complex mystery much in the mode of the books written by C. J. Box. While the locations are different, the issues confronting the game wardens involved are the same. Politics also soon becomes an issue as the heard headed Kendall is much more concerned with his murder case than what Marquez and his team are doing.
As the cases lead back and forth through the high country of California, around Lake Tahoe and through Western Nevada, Marquez and his team quickly become more than characters in a book. They take on a flesh and blood substance as they work to solve a case with far reaching implications while juggling the demands of their personal off the job lives.
While occasionally a little slow in spots, the overall read is good with strong character development, multiple storylines and plenty of action moving the work forward. Readers new to this series should definitely start with the first book "Shell Games." Not only does it set up the characters, several events including how that case was resolved, are explained in detail in this novel.

Wow--Fantastic eco-thriller.......2005-12-20
I really enjoyed Shell Games, Russell's first book in this trilogy, but I like Night Game at least twice as much. His development of hero John Marquez is the main reason, especially the psychology that compels him to place himself at risk again and again. The author uses point-of-view narration to excellent effect. There are lots of other compelling characters here, too, perhaps most notably Sophie, an almost a feral woman in tune with violence and sex and able to use them to her advantage to gain power over a life that has left her powerless.
The plot deals with a ring that captures wild bears and holds them in cages to milk their bile, which is worth a fortune on the black market because of its uses in traditional Asian medicine. Russell slowly (and without preaching) builds the case for why this activity is unnatural and should be prosecuted. I also like the noir element that few people seem to care besides Marquez and his team; his undercover unit's budget is continually being cut, and poaching charges are often bargained away to get to something "more serious." I also find it fascinating that these illicit animal products tie into brutal, global crime rings because the products bring such a high price.
As an avid hiker/mountain guy, I loved spending a book's worth of time in the backcountry around Placerville, Calif., through Russell's beautiful description and narration.
The book's just fantastic. I bought this one for my father-in-law for Christmas.
fabulous thriller.......2005-01-08
California Department of Fish & Game Special Operations Chief Lieutenant John Marquez and his undercover team investigate poachers using torturous devices to capture, and slaughter bears to sell body parts to healers. The violators are organized, professional, and one step ahead of the game wardens because they hacked into the law enforcement computers. No one interferes with this shadowy group's lucrative business and if threatening the wardens and their families fails, murder will follow and may have already occurred.
Meanwhile as he struggles to do his job without endangering his loved ones, John investigates disgraced game warden, Bill Petroni at the same time that homicide detective Jack Kendal suspects Bill for murder of a camper last year. The link is Bill's live in lover Sophie Broussard, who has ties to bear poaching and other illegal activities. Could Bill have provided insider information to a deadly group intent on keeping their profits the envy of the Fortune 500 firms?
The atmosphere is incredible as the picturesque Northern California Mountains come across as sinister and dangerous as any urban noir scene. John is terrific with his ethics pulled in several directions due to concern for his family, his team and their family, the bears he is supposed to protect, and doing his job. The enemy is the key as they are shadowy yet successful, which leads to intrigue balanced against cruelty and cynicism from government officials whose vision is a paraphrase from the Eisenhower administration that what is good for business is good for the USA. This is a fabulous tale in which justice and morality struggles against making a buck at any cost (as long as someone else pays the tab).
Harriet Klausner
A Compelling, Fast-Paced Read.......2004-12-09
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the second installment in the John Marquez crime fiction series. Intelligent characters, well-paced plot, an insight into a world I knew nothing about, the illegal trafficking in bear bile (just as the first Marquez explored the world of abalone smuggling, another world previously unknown to me) - plus, to top it all off, good writing. One could hardly ask for anything more, except a third installment. As to that, I understand one is on the way, one focusing on caviar and sturgeon trafficking, with a special appearance by Russian mobsters. I'm looking forward to it already. In the meantime, though, check out Night Games. You won't be disappointed.
highly inventive and intriguing crime fiction.......2004-11-29
Night Game combines action and mystery, is excitingly paced, the crisp prose is strong and augmented by great turns of phrases and well evoked scenes. You'll see what I mean when you find yourself in John Marquez's domain of natural settings populated by the ambiguously motivated and sublimely remorseless. Who to trust remains a big question. Most importantly, the characters and story feel real, and I didn't guess the end.

The size of time and space.......2001-11-29
I first was introduced to Loren Eisley by a roommate in graduate school who read aloud to me the final essay in this book. It is entitled, "The Brown Wasps," and if you've never read anything by Eisley, you might want to start there. Among many things, this particular essay is about memory, home, and the place of death in life - themes that run throughout the book whose essays are intimate narratives that intermingle meditations on science and personal history. Having now written these words I feel they miss the mark in recommending this book becuase the themes of Eisley's work seem more experiential than concrete to me, which is the case for many truths about life - truths that can be captured more by the feelings evoked by a time and a place than by mere words alone. And yet, his words do a remarkable job of evoking past times and places, locating them in your present life and providing a context for understanding their meaning. If you read this book, perhaps you'll want to share it with a friend, as my friend did with me, and I have with many good friends since. Eisley communicates the happy/sad, excited/melancholic, naive/wise tensions of nostalgia like no one else I've read.
You cannot miss with Loren Eiseley.......1999-04-12
Theodosius Dobzhansky described Eiseley as "...a Proust miraculously turned into an evolutionary anthropologist," and his works are greatly admired by Ray Bradbury. This was the second book I read of his after "The Immense Journey" and it was no let down at all! It too is haunting, beautiful, disturbing, hopeful, fearful, and immensely imaginative.
Here's a taste, from the chapter The Places Below: "If you cannot bear the silence and the darkness, do not go there; if you dislike black night and yawning chasms, never make them your profession. If you fear the sound of water hurrying through crevices toward unknown and mysterious destinations, do not consider it. Seek out the sunshine. It is a simpler prescription. Avoid the darkness."
