A must-read for travellers in Ireland........1999-04-02
I'm ordering an extra copy of this book for my Irish house; it walks away with visitors, I think. It's a wonderful wander through a colorful land which, in a way, persists behind the modern clutter, the wide roads and narrow minds that have replaced the old ways. I'll carry it with me as I drive down to Roundstone, up to Sligo, amethyst mining on Achill ... the stones, plants, birds and other charms of Ireland are merrily visited, and it gives another dimension to one's explorations.

Book Description
Why was it that Francis Bacon, trained for high political office, devoted himself to proposing a celebrated and sweeping reform of the natural sciences? Julian Martinâs investigative study looks at Baconâs family context, his employment in Queen Elizabethâs security service and his radical critique of the relationship between the Common Law and the monarchy, to find the key to this important question. Deeply conservative and elitist in his political views, Bacon adapted Tudor strategies of State management and bureaucracy, the social anxieties and prejudices of the late Elizabethan governing elite, and a principal intellectual resource of the English governing classes - the Common Law - into a novel vision and method for the sciences. Baconâs axiom that â~Knowledge is Powerâ takes on far-reaching implications in Martinâs challenging argument that the reform of natural philosophy was a central part of an audacious plan to strengthen the powers of the Crown in the State.

Book Description
British Isles: A Natural History takes the reader on a journey through time, from the explosive birth of the islands to the rich and varied landscape of today. It chronicles the evolution of this unique land, exploring everything from geology and geography to flora and fauna. The story begins 3 billion years ago, when primeval forces created the foundations of the islands, and ends in the modern era, with the landscape utterly transformed by human activity. Along the way, we encounter gigantic ice sheets, ancient forests, early human settlers, and an astonishing variety of plants and animals. At the start of the 21st century, as we look to the future, the author investigates the many fresh challenges and responsibilities Britons face if they are to live in harmony with nature.
Book Description
In Natural Rights and the New Republicanism, Michael Zuckert proposes a new view of the political philosophy that lay behind the founding of the United States. In a book that will interest political scientists, historians, and philosophers, Zuckert looks at the Whig or opposition tradition as it developed in England. He argues that there were, in fact, three opposition traditions: Protestant, Grotian, and Lockean. Before the English Civil War the opposition was inspired by the effort to find the "one true Protestant politics--an effort that was seen to be a failure by the end of the Interregnum period. The Restoration saw the emergence of the Whigs, who sought a way to ground politics free from the sectarian theological-scriptural conflicts of the previous period.
The Whigs were particularly influenced by the Dutch natural law philosopher Hugo Grotius. However, as Zuckert shows, by the mid-eighteenth century John Locke had replaced Grotius as the philosopher of the Whigs. Zuckert's analysis concludes with a penetrating examination of John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, the English "Cato," who, he argues, brought together Lockean political philosophy and pre-existing Whig political science into a new and powerful synthesis. Although it has been misleadingly presented as a separate "classical republican" tradition in recent scholarly discussions, it is this "new republicanism" that served as the philosophical point of departure for the founders of the American republic.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful, cogent analysis of the founding philosophy.......2002-01-19
Zuckert's book covers three different topics: the philosophical meaning of the Declaration of Independence's paragraphs regarding natural rights; Jefferson's personal views on natural rights; and the interplay between Locke's natural rights philosophy, the Whig political tradition, the Pilgrim/Puritan tradition and classical republican thought in the history and philosophy of America's founders. Zuckert argues cogently that natural rights philosophy was the strongest motivating force in the founders' view. Zuckert's book presumes some knowledge, but sets forth arguments thoroughly enough for the non-expert to understand. He also writes clear prose. All in all, an excellent book for anyone interested in the history or philosophy of the American founding.
undergrad opinion.......2000-04-25
this book was hard to understand. everyone thinks Mr. Zuckert is very good at being smart and at saying smart things. This is probably true, he seems very smart. But he should act less smart in his undergraduate government courses, it alienates his students. thank you
Seminal.......1999-11-27
This is a profound and important work. Zuckert analyzes in depth the history and development of republican ideology, revealing much that is new and refuting much that has been assumed in the past. He identifies three distinct strains of republican thought, Protestant, Grotian, and Lockean. He conducts an in depth examination of John Milton and Hugo Grotius, with special emphasis on their similarities with Locke. In addition, he rebuts a good deal of the inane nonsense that has been passed off as ideological scholarship for the past three decades. In particular, he virtually destroys the theories of J.G.A. Pocock and his band of followes, including Gordon Wood. On a side note, he manages to rescue Bernard Bailyn from his categorization as a "Republican revisionist" by showing how much he really differs from Pocock et al. Following this, he painstakingly examines John Locke's thought. His findings are fresh and challenging. More importantly, he explains just how original he was and subsequently just why he was so important. To top it all off, he takes a look a"Cato's Letters," showing how the authors managed to synthesize Lockean liberalism with republicanism, producing one of the most brilliant works in the history of political philosophy. Despite its general brilliance, I do have some misgivings about certain aspects of the work. Although I certainly acknowledge the importance of Lockean ideas, I have to say that Lockean ideas are not necessarily found in Locke alone. One individual in particular, Algernon Sidney, expressed many Lockean ideas before Locke, and his works were widely influential throughout England and America. Beyond this and a few other quibbles, this book is virtually flawless. If one is interested in the issues at hand, this work is an absolute must.

Book Description
Defining Science deals with the major role of the historian and philosopher of science, William Whewell, in early Victorian debates about the nature of science and its moral and cultural value. Richard Yeo also examines the different forms or genres in which science was discussed in the public sphere--most crucially in the Victorian review journals, but also in biographical, historical and educational works. Analysis of the whole corpus of Whewell's work suggests that it be seen not only as an attempt to define science, but to clarify his own vocation as its leading critic.

Book Description
Sir Matthew Hale (1609-76) was the best-known judge of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell, but he nonetheless rose to be Lord Chief Justice under King Charles II. His constitutional ideas are of interest both to lawyers and to historians of political thought; but he also wrote extensively on scientific and religious questions, in ways that illustrate the birth of early Enlightenment attitudes to both. This book surveys all aspects of Hale's work, and supplies fresh perspectives on revolutionary developments in science and religion, as well as politics.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and comprehensive history of bouldering.......2003-12-09
John Sherman has really done it with this excellent book. Though some may find his sense of humor somewhat caustic (I happen to like it), this is an indispensable guide to all the major bouldering areas in the country. Make no mistake--this is not a "guide book"--you will find no route topos or maps of bouldering areas here (though there are maps TO bouldering areas). The text stays within the historical realm, and Sherman's knowledge of these places is revealed on every page. Of particular interest are his (and other's) memories of places like the Buttermilk boulders, which are presented in a light that precedes the mega-popularity that Bishop has attained in the last five years or so. And Sherman is not only a talented writer--he is also one of my favorite climbing photographers. Beautiful and tasteful prints illustrate almost every page. Well worth the money.
Good book, bad binding.......1999-12-22
This book is fantastic. If you like bouldering and John Sherman's humorous tales you will enjoy this book.
The SOFT COVER BINDING FALLS APART after one or two openings. Of three people I know with the soft cover, all three have fallen apart. BUY THE HARD COVER VERSION!
Excellent........1999-08-13
It reads as a guidebook, a history, and as literature. Sherman writes with surprising grace and introspection about the sport. Nice profiles of the locals at different areas, too. And I was relieved to see no reference to the finest, and apparently still secret, problem at Carderock, MD.
This book is a must have classic for any climber........1998-12-13
Stone Crusade is THE book of bouldering and the history of the sport in the USA. John Sherman's witty and irreverent writing style and his artistic photographic skill capture the true feeling of the sport across the entire country. A guide book, history lesson, and entertainment all rolled into one. You will want to hit the road on your own Stone Crusade.
best book on history of bouldering, guide to many U.S areas.......1998-07-18
I have used this book many times to find bouldering areas. I have also found that it gets me to the boulders easier then the published guide. This book has a lot of great history on bouldering in the United States, the people who started it all and which areas they had the most influence on. It is like Rock And Road for bouldering only better.

The book also includes guidance on basic data interpretation - how to carry out and interpret test results. Common difficulties are highlighted and solutions given with the aid of case histories and practical tips. Specially drawn colour illustrations and photographs demonstrate examination techniques and clinical diseases. The writing style is accessible and easy to follow - almost like a tutorial from an experienced doctor at the bedside. As the foundations of clinical skills remain constant this book will remain an invaluable reference throughout the working life of a doctor.
Customer Reviews:
What a book !.......2007-04-13
When I started my internal medicine course, I used " Clinical Examination by Nicholas J. Talley" which was recommended by our professor, it was nicely organized, not very comprehensive but it was Ok for me. After I passed the final exam, I had come across "Clinical Skills (Oxford Core Texts)" in the bookshop & thought to buy it to give internal medicine anther shot since I didn't like the course that much.
The book was AMAZING!!!
It is as it says on the back cover "book in the style of tutor teaching at the patient's bedside"!!
it is so true, it is great for med student who starts physical examination for the 1st time in their life, it gives you difficulty factor ( DF) of each exam, 9/10 means difficult to do and to get result from the 1st time, 2/10 means so easy and you should be able to get it right from the 1st time.. Clever idea, it is really a pressure relief if you failed in performing an exam to know it is normal not to get it at this point as medical student with little experience ...
liked the unique chapters like "the chest X ray" & "Finals" where u find very practical & useful tips in OSCE & the some of the doctor's favorites tricks !
I highly recommend it for medical student; internal medicine will be an amusing course with this book !
I really like the idea of books written by Excellent Med students & Residents who can really tell you what exactly you need to know & get benefit out of their experience.

Book Description
This book examines the role of job proximity on neighborhood employment rates and the propensity of residents to work close to their own neighborhoods. Employment rates in many older and particularly minority neighborhoods rose significantly from 1970 to 1990. The spatial concentration of unemployment and poverty precipitates a number of place-based policies, including residential dispersal, reverse commuting programs, and urban economic development. The author has developed a model to estimate the effects of jobs located within a neighborhood on the local unemployment rate, incorporating measures of skills match between nearby jobs and neighborhood residents, and controling for the number of competing workers in the surrounding area.
Job proximity, however, is not the only cause of urban unemployment problems. Other contributing factors examined include spatial mismatch, employment discrimination, skills mismatch, and the role of social networks. The study finds that although job proximity affects neighborhood unemployment rates, the effects are modest and the skill levels of such jobs are important. African Americans, after controlling for skills match, job proximity, and other factors, are found to suffer from higher unemployment and lower levels of employment at neighborhood jobs than whites and Hispanics.
