Fantastic........2006-06-06
The story captures the essence of the Western Highlands and Islands of Scotland. The beauty and the brutality. The second and third books in the trilogy provide an honesty that leaves you with a respect for and a desire to know more about a man who lived this remarkable life. You will of course fall in love with the otters who allowed people to share their lives for better and for worse.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
There aren't too many otter books around, and this one is pretty serious. The story of a man's love for and relationship with the furry little swimmers.
He looks after and befriends them, and the book is an interesting and occasionally moving account of his life as affected by these entertaining animals.
Ring of Bright Water.......2007-03-17
I absolutely fell in love with Mij the Otter but how in the world can the writer say this is entertainment for children when the loveable otter gets killed by being hit over the head with a shovel!! I have never seen this movie until just recently and I sobbed for hours!! I just did not see any point in having him die.
Why Otters Don't Make Good Pets.......2006-10-26
The reason I don't recommend this book, despite the nice writing and decriptions of the Western Highlands, is for one dark fact: a number of wild otters died for Maxwell's selfish pursuit of having a wild animal as a pet. This is not the story of a man who raises abandoned wild otters cubs in the Western Highlands and releases them but the story of a man who takes otters from the wild in Iraq and Africa and tries to raise them in Scotland. What this story also tells us is that, if you are of a privillaged class, you can have any wild animal you want as your pet. Today this is illegal "pet" trading and it is responsible for pushing certain species to the edge of extinction. I know that at the time this practice was not looked down upon as it is today and certain other nature writers (Durrell, Heinrich) engage in the same practice but with a more educated populus it should be clear: wild animals are not pets and they should stay wild!
Otterly fantastic.......2004-11-02
I read this book when I was a child, and I really enjoyed it. I've seen the movie version several times since, and just recently decided to re-read the book. I was not disappointed. It starts off kind of rocky, but once the otters enter Maxwell's life, it's pure magic. He's an incredibly good writer with the ability to make you "see" everything he describes.

A Book that Will Become Part of the Dream of Your Heart.......2004-05-13
Forever after you read A Ring of Bright Water, the beauty, wonder, and humor of this book will gently surface with a ring of bright ripples in the waters of you mind. I am never able to remember this book without simultaneously wanting to laugh and to cry-and always with a sense of awed wonder. This is the true story of Gavin's befriending of otters (or perhaps we should say of the otters' decision to befriend Gavin.) In one scene, on the first night Gavin has one of the otters in his home, the otter carefully watches Gavin get into bed and pull the covers to his chin. The otter then crawls in beside Gavin, lies on its back, and pulls the covers to its own chin. Other scenes describe Gavin's losing efforts to make certain parts of his cottage off limits to otters. Gavin never for the rest of his life produced prose that so translucently coveys the beauty of the waters around his cottage, or the sense of his own evolving life and emotions. Reading this book is giving a gift to yourself. It is one a dozen that I always look for used to give to friends.

The Best Pop-Up Book Ever - I'm Not Kidding!.......2003-06-05
Over the years, I've bought many pop-up books for my 5-year-old. This one is, without doubt, the most entertaining pop-up book I've seen. Many pop-up books suffer from pointless, non-interactive, or non-functioning pop-up animations. Not this one!
You get, in order,
1) A slide mechanism with a dog pulling covers off a firefighter,
2) Another slide mechanism with a firefighter sliding down a firepole,
3) A side view of a fire truck, with flaps showing the inside,
4) More flaps, showing the operation of a fire hydrant, and also acting as a simple animation for the firefighters,
5) Yet another flap, with a firefighter donning a breathing mask,
6) An extremely cool 2-page full pop-up, showing a house engulfed in flames, complete with a fire truck, firefighters climbing a ladder, and other firefighters shooting water in the front door,
7) A slide mechanism showing a firefighter cutting a hole in the floor with an axe,
8) A flap showing a fire being put out with a water hose, and
9) A fold-out pop-up showing the fire engine pulling out of the station for the next call.
As that run-down shows, you get a lot of interaction AND a lot of learning going on with this book. Very highly recommended.

Timeless Toys: Classic Toys and the Playmakers Who Created Them
ASIN: 081181162X |
Book Description
Ever wondered if Barbie had a last name? (It's Roberts.) Who invented Lincoln Logs? (John L. Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright.) Why a Wiffle Ball has holes? (So you can throw a curve without throwing out your arm.) Filled with a host of curious facts and little-known anecdotes about the creation and evolution of these and dozens of other timeless toys and games, Kid Stuff is a celebration of classic playthings, mostly from the 1940s through the 1960s, that are still popular today. Pairing colorful and evocative new photographs with reproductions of original ads and publicity shots, this delightful book reminds us why these toys live on -- both in our memories and on store shelves.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Book.......2006-01-24
One way in which the thinking processes of successful inventors and entrepreneurs differs from the average person is that they often see a potential masker that others fail to see. Many demonstrations of this ability may be found when reading this delightful little book, Kid Stuff. David Hoffman has assembled the histories of the most familiar toys of our childhood. From the Ant Farm to the Whiffle Ball, he details how they were conceived, perfected, and promoted.
Consider the Slinky. If Richard James, in 1945, had not been intrigued by how a spring he accidentally dropped "walked" across the floor, the story could have ended right there. But be did see a potential. He perfected it, named it, and packaged it. It then died on the vine at the local retail outlet. Again, the story could have ended right there. However, he realized this was a new item and that it had to be demonstrated. When he demonstrated it at Gimbels, he sold 400 in minutes. In the 50 years since, 250 million have been sold!
Three basics in the Slinky story form a common thread that runs through many of these classic toy histories. First, someone sees a potential market; secondly, a dynamite trade name is created; thirdly, clever marketing is utilized.
Often the opportunity is in plain sight and, in fact, may have been for some time. Hoffman points out that it is said that the Yo-Yo is actually the second-oldest known toy (after dolls). Yet it remained for Donald Duncan, in 1927, to see the possibilities. Further confirmation that some people do look at the world differently may be had by noting that Duncan also invented the parking meter and introduced the Good Humor "ice cream on a stick."
An example of a mental process utilizing analogical thinking may be seen in the history of the Erector Set. Back in 1911, A. C. Gilbert observed girders being assembled for an electric system along the railroad line he frequently traveled. Realizing kids love to assemble things (wood blocks, etc.), he put together a toy kit consisting of girders, gears, pulleys, etc.
This power of observing the obvious and seeing the not so obvious is again shown in the history of Mr. Potato Head. George Lerner noticed how children love to play with their food. Who has not? He utilized the observation to create Mr. Potato Head. Incidentally, "Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to ever be advertised on television." The story recites how the toy has been adapted to the times. His pipe was eliminated and the last pipe given to the Surgeon General at the Great American Smokeout. Responding to safety regulation they increased the size of its pasts and made them less sharp. As Hoffman notes, the current Mr. Potato Head may surprise nostalgic parents, but he is still loved by the kids.
Another example of how a toy was adapted to the times is Antonio Pasin's original wagon, "Liberty Coaster," of 1923. It was made of wood and it was followed by the classic little red wagon, "Radio Flyer," made of steel. It was called "Flyer" to emphasize motion and "Radio" to honor the Italian inventor of radio.
If for no other reason, read this book to satisfy your curiosity as to how the classic toys came to be. How Paul Guillow created the balsa wood airplane industry. How a toy store owner and a marketing consultant created Silly Putty---it floundered until a mention in the New Yorker magazine resulted in orders for a quarter-million and it's sales has since reached the 200-million mark!
This book is jammed packed with toy trivia. Largest-selling football in the world? Nerf football. Barbie Doll's last name? Roberts.
Viktor Budnik's photographs for this book are terrific. They make this little book look good enough for your coffee table. But best of all, even your kids will enjoy this book and, perhaps, pick up on the idea that behind each toy there was a real person who took an idea from the dream world and brought it into the real world.
Not Just For Kids.......2005-05-03
From the infamous ant farm to Wooly Willy, this book covers all the hokey and cool toys you probably had if you grew up in the 60s, 70s or even later. The author does a nice job of providing an interesting synopsis of each toy, including its invention, popularity, and success (or lack thereof). There are dozens of obscure facts and stories behind the creation and evolution of these toys, and this book culls them all for us, making it a fun and enjoyable read.
The great thing about this book is that the toys featured include those that most of us had as kids (or at least had a friend who had them): Magic 8 Ball, Slinky (my personal favorite), Mr. Potato Head, Tinkertoys....and the list goes on. This book is great for the kid who never grew up.
Every babyboomer should own this book!.......2001-01-15
These guys have put together a tremendous walk down memory lane. If you want to know the secrets behind your favorite childhood toys (as well as be reminded about how much fun they were)...buy this book. Set it out on a coffee table at your next party, and you are guaranteed an evening of fun reminiscing.
This book is more than fun reading...it is childhood joy recaptured.
thanks for the memories.......2000-01-09
This book brings back wonderful memories. As a child it was wonderful playing and experiencing these wonderful toys. As an adult it is wonderful to find out why and how these classic toys came to be. This book is sure to bring a smile to all who read it.

Memory lane via toys of years gone by..........2007-01-20
As an avid collector of toys, I found this small wonder of a book a truly enjoyable read. The pages were chockful of wonderful pictures of toys from eras gone by. It brought back memories long forgotten but easily restored browsing through the pages. I recommend this highly for those who remember and for those who want to know what it was like to have these terrific toys available to the "older generation." You can't miss!
Book Description
What can our new baby do? Roller skate? Learn kung fu? Fly a plane? Play peekaboo!
Older children ask lots of questions about a new baby -- what will baby eat? Where will baby live? Lift the flap on every spread to find the answer underneath. This interactive, light-hearted book is perfect for curious older brothers-and sisters-to-be.
Customer Reviews:
Cute, but silly........2007-02-04
This is a very cute but silly book. I was looking for something a little more serious to get my 2 1/2 year old ready for his new brother. However, after reading it to him several times, he memorized it and it has become quite fun to read with him. If you are looking for something to actually prepare an older sibling for a new baby, I wouldn't recommend this book. But, if you want something cute to read that your little one will probably have memorized and like to repeat after the first few times, then this is a very cute book.
Great Sibling Book.......2005-08-25
My boys, 5 & 3, have recently become big brothers and they LOVE this book. It has flaps, which my 3-yr-old likes and goofy humor for my 5-yr-old. We all have the whole book memorized now and we are buying it whenever we need a new big brother or big sister gift!

Book Description
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Queen of Heaven and beloved by her people, is presented in this lavish and extraordinary pop-up book that tells the story of how she appeared to Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac so many years ago.
Customer Reviews:
A Keepsake for Generations of Family Members.......2001-05-10
Francisco Serrano's La Virgen de Guadalupe is not just a well-written historical piece for children, but a beautiful keepsake to be passed down through the generations. The book chronicles the age-old legend of how the Virgin Mary appeared to a poor indigineous boy hundreds of years ago -- an encounter that would forever alter how Catholicism was practiced in Mexico and by Latinos worldwide today. The significance of the Virgin Mary appearing to Diego was momentous. The Virgin Mary was brought to Mexico via the Spanish conquest's Catholicism. The fact that a dark-skinned Virgin Mary would appear to an indio demonstrated Catholicism's accessibility to the masses in Mexico. Mexico was able to claim a part of the conquerer's religion as their own. La Virgen de Guadalupe became Mexico's patron saint.
Serrano's book breaks down the story in a straightforward manner that children of all ages can understand and appreciate. The pictures and pop-up images are beautifully illustrated and are a whimsical touch to a magical story. The reader looks forward to every page's clever pop and pull items. The book is certainly a treasure for older family members who want to share an important piece of spiritualism of the Latino culture with their children.
