    Book Description

Environmental conflict resolution (ECR) is a process of negotiation that allows stakeholders in a dispute to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on their own terms. The tools of ECR, such as facilitation, mediation, and conflict assessment, suggest that it fits well with other ideas for reforming environmental policy. First used in 1974, ECR has been an official part of policymaking since the mid 1990s. The Promise and Performance of Environmental Conflict Resolution is the first book to systematically evaluate the results of these efforts.

The Promise and Performance of Environmental Conflict Resolution presents empirical research along with insights from some of ECR's most experienced practitioners. Beginning with a primer about concepts and methods, the book describes the kinds of disputes where ECR has been applied, making it clear that "despite the faith of proponents in the power and usefulness of ECR, it is not applicable to all environmental conflicts."The contributions that follow critically investigate the record and potential of ECR, drawing on perspectives from political science, public administration, regional planning, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and law.

ECR is being extended to almost every area of environmental policy. Rosemary O'Leary and Lisa Bingham argue that truly effective use of ECR requires something more than advocacy. The Promise and Performance of Environmental Conflict Resolution provides scholars, policymakers, students, and practitioners with critical assessments, so that ECR can be used to its best advantage.

              Book Description

              * A fresh examination of the causes of environmental conflicts and key tools for conflict resolution through consensus building
              * Explores case study material from the UK, the US and the Netherlands and draws conclusions relevant to conflicts and policies in all jurisdictions
              * Essential, practical reading for stakeholders on all sides of environmental conflicts charged with creating constructive outcomes

Clashes over environmental issues often leave government agencies, industry and activists locked in unproductive political or legal combat. Increasingly, players from all sides are conceding that there must be some other way of resolving environmental conflicts. This book examines that proposition by examining how and why conflicts occur and whether approaches to conflict resolution based on consensus building could be more widely applied. It differs from existing books by covering both environmental mediation and public participation and by analysing detailed case studies from the UK, the US and the Netherlands.

In addition, the book explores official resistance to the wider use of consensus building, arguing that government agencies that have resisted participation and mediation cannot be dismissed as the problem but have to be part of the solution. The concluding chapter suggests general principles for effective partnership working concerning the remits, resources and the timescales within which agencies operate.

                  Book Description

The Jordan River waters are essential for the development and well being of the people of its basin. Plans for the development of its water resources were considered since the beginning of the twentieth century, and have long been central to dispute between riparian nations. This volume reviews the roots of conflict over the Jordan between Arabs and Jews and the development of that conflict over the past 150 years. It analyzes the positions of Arabs and Israelis and the role of the United States in promoting a settlement. The work then presents the development of a negotiated resolution of that part of the conflict related to Jordan and Israel through the Middle East Peace Process. This book approaches the Jordanian-Israeli water affairs in the Jordan River Basin with a wide interdisciplinary perspective. It unfolds the full history of the dispute and negotiation process, beginning in the 1950s and ending with the water accord in 1974.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Intriguing Read.......2000-06-05

As a person who takes an interest in the country of Haiti and its political figures, I was very excited upon discovering Aristide's "In the Parish of the Poor". This book, which includes a wonderful foreword by Amy Wilentz, contains all the intellect and emotional fervor that makes Aristide the highly-respected individual that he is. The book is well-written and even contains some of Aristide's sermons. I am in no means a supporter of Aristide; however, I must highly recommend this book to anyone. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless and Touching.......2000-04-23

Haiti- 600 miles from Florida, but it may as well be 600 light years! Jean Bertrand Aristide captures that magnificently in "In The Parish of the Poor". As an educator I have used passages from this book in class to provoke discussions on social justice and morality. And as someone who is drawn to Haiti as often as funds allow,I cherish it for its truth. A lot has happened to Haiti since Titid wrote this, but it has a spirit that is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars An inside to the thoughts of liberation-theology.......1998-08-23

This book is excellent! Having met Aristide- in Haiti, I know the absolute power of love that Aristide holds in his heart for the people of Haiti - and this book does just that. It gives the reader a look at the problems in Haiti, those that Aristide has experienced, and why he believes he can change the situation there. He gives the reader fact and feeling- true, honest feelings without the flowery-detail. The feelings in this book are human. Aristide calls out to his readers to take heed and see Haiti as a land of people with pride, love, and faith. He lets you see - from his point of view - the atrocities of standing against the powerful government....of what his vision is for Haiti's future and how faith and liberation theology will bring Haiti to a new level. An excellent read- a powerful book- with actual sermons given by Aristide at the end- that might change the reader's view of the society we live in and his/her place in it.

                          Book Description

In the years of expanding state authority following the Black Death, English common law permitted the leasing of parishes by their rectors and vicars, who then pursued interests elsewhere and left the parish in the control of lay lessees. But a series of statutes enacted by Henry VIII between 1529 and 1540 effectively reduced such clerical absenteeism. Robert Palmer examines this transformation of the English parish and argues that it was an important part of the English Reformation.

Palmer analyzes an extensive set of data drawn from common law records to reveal a vigorous and effective effort by the laity to enforce the new statutes. Motivated by both economic and traditional ideals, the litigants made the commercial activities of leaseholding and buying for resale and profit the exclusive domain of the laity and acquired the power to regulate the clergy. According to Palmer, these parish-level reformations presaged and complemented other initiatives of the crown that have long been considered central to the reign of Henry VIII.

                            Book Description

The parish, the lowest level of hierarchy in the medieval church, was the shared responsibility of the laity and the clergy. Most Christians were baptized, went to confession, were married, and were buried in the parish church or churchyard; in addition, business, legal settlements, sociability, and entertainment brought people to the church, uniting secular and sacred concerns. In The People of the Parish, Katherine L. French contends that late medieval religion was participatory and flexible, promoting different kinds of spiritual and material involvement.

The rich parish records of the small diocese of Bath and Wells include wills, court records, and detailed accounts by lay churchwardens of everyday parish activities. They reveal the differences between parishes within a single diocese that cannot be attributed to regional variation. By using these records show to the range and diversity of late medieval parish life, and a Christianity vibrant enough to accommodate differences in status, wealth, gender, and local priorities, French refines our understanding of lay attitudes toward Christianity in the two centuries before the Reformation.

Popular novel writer Andrew Greeley returns to the voice of memoirist in this update of his feisty original autobiography, Confessions of a Parish Priest. Greeley is the first to admit how controversial he is. Religious purists attack his fiction as slanderous and racy. Even more divisive is Greeley's open criticism of the Catholic Church, including his denouncing of other priests for failing to handle the rampant pedophilia problem. Although Greeley is not flip or defensive when confronting his critics, he does make it clear that he is a man with a mission, and he will not be stopped from writing fiction or speaking his truth. In his chapter titled "Pedophile Problems," he brazenly writes, "Nothing has made me feel more contemptuous of my fellow priests--both as individuals and as collectives--than their response to the pedophile crisis.... The bishops in a way are worse.... After blaming the media for the problem, they set up a committee to study the problem, to make a report, and issue vague and feeble guidelines." This is the kind of strong writing one can expect from this highly opinionated (and highly admired) man of words and cloth. Arranged as a collection of essays, fans will find plenty of fresh material in this memoir, including chapters about "Prayers," "Catholic Schools," "The End of the Confident Church," and "Why They Stay--It's the Stories!" --Gail Hudson

                              Book Description

Those who know his novels, Father Greeley asserts, may be the ones who know him best, because he puts all of himself into the novelshe cant help it. And all of a man like Father Greeley, who for more than half a century has been a successful journalist, novelist, sociologist, and priest, results in something truly extraordinary. Picking up where his acclaimed Confessions of Parish Priest left off, this memoir has something for everyone: whether youre already a fan of his fiction, and want to know more about how he writes his books, or you are interested in an extremely sharp and insightful firsthand look into the Churchs turbulent and controversial times in the latter half of this century. His keen journalistic eye has been closely observing the world around him and his native charm, wit, and insight makes it a pleasure to join this remarkable man as he reflects on some of the major issues that have led him into the volatile world of church politics and the glaring light of media attention. Always on the side of compassion, understanding, and honesty, Father Greeley admits that sometimes he finds himself unable to keep quiet. Introspective, jovial, somber, playful, Father Greeleys charismatic personality shines through in all of its many facets as he examines his life and times. And running through all his observations is the positive undercurrent, familiar to his millions of readers, that God is Love, Understanding, and Forgiveness.

On reading this book -- as part of my exploration of modern Catholicism -- I was thankful that it was chock FULL of the "nonsense" I have come to expect from the good Father. Chock full of his insight into the "why" of modern Catholicism. Chock full of his refusal to pander to the status quo just because "we've always done things that way." Chock full of his obvious and joyful love for God, Jesus, and his fellow Catholics around the world...these are the things he has stood for throughout his long and colourful career. I'd have been disappointed if they were absent from this, his exciting and moving memoir.

After finishing this book, my only wish is that this isn't the end of Father Greeley's long career of theological troublemaking. In the traditional Jewish expression, "biz a hundert und tzvantzig yohrn" -- [may he live to] "a hundred and twenty years!"

4 out of 5 stars Fr. Greeley's best book to date........2000-02-09

Very pleasant reading. This autobiography is devoid of the nonsense usually associated with Fr. Greeley. It presents his academic prowess and lively Irish intellect in their natural perspective. I'm at odds with some of his liberal theology, but have to say that he's a very honest man who obviously loves his priestly vocation. More power to him in his hazardous fight against pedophile priests and religious and the hierarchy that conceals them. Fr. Greeley's courageous efforts to eradicate these vile predators are what turned diocesan authorities and the institutional Church against him.

Hey folks. To whatever else good you can say about this book needs to be added that Smith was a card-carrying great photographer. Look at the ways he understands the effects of natural light on his subjects.

Fortunately, his prints and negatives are now cared for in the RIBA library in London.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Good Process.......2003-08-15

This is a good introduction to parish church architecture. The format presented in the book does require quite a bit of page turning but the format does produce an effective learning process.

As I read the text I turned to the photos and studied them as they were referenced in the text. At the conclusion of the text there are notes on the photos and then the photos follow. This format occurs throughout the book. After reading the text I then read the photo notes and studied the photos for a second time. This format and study method links the visual study of the photos with the textual study causing each to develop the other. As a result, the second photo exam reveals far more to the reader than the first.

This book has been very beneficial to me and I recommend it and the study method it creates.

4 out of 5 stars The classic guide.......2003-05-09

It seems hard to overstate the importance of the work of photographer Edwin Smith to the preservation and cataloguing of English ecclesiastical architecture. This book, first published in 1952 and substantially updated and enlarged after Smith's death in 1971, is, if not the definitive guide to the subject, probably one of the most important.

Smith's photography is enhanced by informative chapters, written by Graham Hutton, that trace the evolution of English parish church design and construction from well before the Conquest up to and through the Victorian era. Of course, the story of parish churches is also the story of the parish, and therefore the reader also will find here a fine capsule summary of changing sociological patterns over many centuries.

If I have one complaint, it's in the way the text, explanatory notes, and photos are arranged. Hutton's chapters are annotated with references to the photographic plates, which are all generally in one section following the relevant text. The explanatory notes on the photos, in turn, are in a section following the plates. So a reader who wants to look at a photo to which Hutton refers must turn ahead several pages to find the photo, and then several more pages to read, essentially, the caption to the photo. In all, it makes for a lot of flipping pages back and forth and a less than entirely efficient reading experience.

Apart from that, though, this title should have a lot of appeal, not just to architecture and art historians, but also to the not-insubstantial number of people who have affection for historic churches, the English countryside, and the preservation of both. There is much here to learn from, and enjoy.

Anecdotal evidence of the personal experience of Xers shows that they do not find it easy to fit into the culture and structures of much of the contemporary Western church especially in its organizational forms such as mission agencies.
