In response to mounting environmental concerns, a defining characteristic of the latter part of 20th century American life is the increasing interest in Native American philosophies. Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) was one of the earliest supporters of the political, cultural, and spiritual rights of First Peoples, and as a corrective to the materialistic worldview and environmental abuses of our day, The Gospel of the Redman is a prophetic work. This commemorative edition contains for the first time Seton's drawings of American Indian motifs, a selection of photographs illustrating his life, information about his role as founder of the Boy Scouts of America, and his friendship with prominent American Indian leaders. As one of the earliest authentic books on traditional Native American philosophy, The Gospel of the Redman continues to be a valuable source to understand the perennial wisdom of the American Indians in its essential form, and it speaks in an eloquently simple language to the heart of all who seek to better understand how to conserve and protect the earth.

Of all the stories you will ever know...these are the greatest.......2006-08-01
If any book is one to be read aloud, to be remembered, to be shared, to be passed down, it has to be this one. These are words not heard often enough and too often forgotten. It is marvelously simple and even more wonderful. It's small, the stories are nothing special, but when you read them they are.
A "bible" for the spiritually advanced.......2005-08-14
Alternate title?: "Pocket guide for mystics"
In this little volume, written generations ago by one of the founders of the much-maligned-lately Boy Scouts, we find great wisdom about our relationship with the earth and "God" (whatever you choose to call Him/Her/It.)
Seton was an intense and noted student of American Indians. The very un-PC title's use of Redman reflects his times. Occasionally inside there will be a moment of patronization, but for the most part it is volume that speaks of respect and honor.
In the forward are numerous endorsements by many, many faiths. Not the modern literary business endorsements, but leaders of major faiths way back then. From Quakers, Masons, Unitarians, Greek Orthodox, mainline Christian and Jew, the acclamation is universal. "But this is straight Judaism!" and similar.
Seton acknowledges the difficulty in summarizing the spiritual traditions of many tribes, cultures, and regions. But he does a good job.
If you have reached the stage in your spiritual growth where you find religion constricting, where you see the brotherhood/sisterhood in all of creation, where you embrace mystery instead of dogma, buy this book.
great!... better than pie..........1999-01-09
Despite the annoyingly sterotypical title, this book describes the wonder of Native American life before it was destroyed by Europeans... Order of the Arrow members will especially enjoy it.

Customer Reviews:
Very entertaining and informative guide!.......2007-08-19
We bought this book based on an article we read about Disney guide books. I'm so glad we did! It surpassed my expectations! Maybe I should say up front that I'm hetero, so I can't be a good judge on the information focusing on the best gay friendly clubs and hot spots. But as a Disney park fan, I'm a very good judge on that focus on the book. The writing style is very funny, including the quotes from other people, and I enjoyed how it speaks to the reader as an adult. Plus, even though I have been to Disney World 30 times and read a number of other books, QUEENS still gave me new information. That includes a way to save money on park tickets if you're someone who visits Disney often. Thanks, Jeffrey and Eddie! Like someone said, the maps are very simplistic, but this didn't bother me. I wasn't looking for that kind of thing; after all, I can get interactive ones and ones I can customize for us for free on disney.com, so it didn't affect my review. This is not a book to plan your day, telling you to go here, do this and then that, but an insight into rides, dining, and atmosphere. I've already recommended this book to my family and friends who are both gay and straight.
A lovely guide.......2007-07-25
While this book is aimed largely at the traveller with an 'alternative lifestyle', it also has plenty to offer an elderly couple. The detailed guide of the park's toilet facilities was far more exhaustive than in any other handbook I have read. The special toilet maps saved Doreen from embarassment on at least three occassions. Sadly, there were at least three other occassions when it failed to save her from embarassment, but the staff were understanding about the mess and treated her with dignity. I found it a little odd that the authors devoted more than half of the book to the lavatories, but their consideration is admirable. I was saddened to learn within that they were eventually booted out for trying to ignite a gigantic wicker-phallus to display during Mickey Mouse's parade. Is there no end to the intolerance of society? Anyway, I look forward to the forthcoming guide to Iran, where I hope they will find more acceptance.
PS. The recurring joke about 'taking the Mickey' (Oooh!!!) amused me more and more with every repetition.
A Genuinely Fun Read.......2007-06-26
I found this book to be plenty comprehensive, except where it says it isn't. But most of all, I found it to be funny, well written and a nice way to get the most out of visiting the parks as well as a pleasant reminder of what's so fun (and lame) about the parks, when you're not there... like, say, in Detroit for instance.
great guide for the gay community.......2007-05-21
This book is a joy to read, replete with info I find important as a frequent visitor to Disneyworld. We double income, no kids gays have the money and these guys are telling us how and where to spend it to get the most out of our Disney vacation. There's ratings on each and every resort, rides, restaurants etc. Highly recommended.
Fortunately Helpful.......2007-01-05
I was fortunate enough to be able to meet Jeffrey and his family when he was in Disney World. We were in line with him to see Finding Nemo: The Musical, and he was very kind, and very helpful, and his writing styles are definitely much like his attitude. He's very witty and knows what he's talking about.
So, I went out and got this book when his mother told me about it, and I love it. I think it's very helpful, and I've been to the parks many times before and the book has a lot of details I wouldn't have thought of putting in, and those details make it helpful to the reader.

Takes a surprisingly bitter tone..........2007-02-14
In "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", Mrs. Taylor wrote matter-of-factly, without bitterness, and left the story 'innocent' yet revealing. Now, in this sequel, bitterness is evident in many chapters. It isn't about hating whites, but it does harangue the reader about the past, as if somehow they are responsible and as if it were still being done. The point of the story is made rather ineffectively, then, and the reader is left reading without emotion.

Let the Circle Be Unbroken .......2006-11-30
In Let the Circle Be Unbroken, Cassie (the main character) changes from a child that knows little about segregation to a person that understands what life really is. Cassie goes through many conflicts that involve her or her family friends. Her first conflict was T.J. T.J. was a close friend but he has been accused of killing and stealing so the town wants him hanged. Second, Cassie meets her cousin, Suzella. Suzella thinks that she is white when she is both black and white. Then last of all Cassie's friend, Mrs. Lee Annie wants to vote. Her decision cost her greatly. Among all of this, Stacey (Cassie's brother) runs away to find more money because the family had limited money. Mildred D. Taylor used interesting and powerful words and strong dialect to capture my attention. This is a great novel for any one that understands segregation.

11/28/06 Let The Circle Be Unbroken
This book was very exciting because it had big events in each chapter, like when the kid see their uncle for the first time. Most of the chapters end with a cliffhanger. For example at the end of chapter six, the Logan family kids find out that their uncle is married to a white woman. One of the surprises that held my interest was when Mr. Morrison came and stayed wit the Logans to help them on the farm. I liked the style of writing because they used the language used in the book sounds like it would have at that time. When the characters talk, they use like yes'm, ain't, walkin and reckon. The plot of this story was believable. I would recommend this book to any one who likes to read about history.
Review of Let The Circle Be Unbroken.......2006-11-05
We needed this book ASAP for a High School English class and Amazon and this seller came through with flying colors. I received the book within three days and did not order it to be quick shipped. As far as the book itself, it is an excellent read for the 5th-10th grade level and really hits home how there is discrimination within a community. There are many levels to this novel so I would reccomend that younger students have a guide when reading. Perferrably a parent or mentor.

It takes near impossible determination and courage for a family to remain together in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal. But in the Deep South of the 1930s and '40s, Cassie Logan and her family manage not only to stay together, but to draw strength from their adversity. Mildred D. Taylor's classic trio about the Logan family has been the recipient of many distinguished awards, including the Newbery Medal (for Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry) and two Coretta Scott King Awards (for Let the Circle Be Unbroken and The Road to Memphis). Starting at age 9, Cassie begins learning about things no one should ever have to encounter: humiliation, prejudice, brutal violence, and profound injustice. At the same time, though, her family teaches Cassie and her three brothers about dignity, pride, and respect for humanity. The trilogy follows the Logan family through the Depression and into World War II, as they confront tragic loss and joyful triumphs. By the age of 17, Cassie is dreaming of college and law school, but still battling horrific racism. This is a tremendously powerful, dramatic, and beautifully written series. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
Customer Reviews:
What's true, what's not?.......2006-08-15
The problem with a historical fiction book based on first-hand accounts is that the reader never knows what's true and what isn't. The general depiction of segregation in the Depression era South is accurate, but some specifics are questionable: for instance, Mr. Morrison's parents being from "bred stock." The author, a member of the Black Power movement, clearly had an agenda, and we can't be sure that she wasn't about to let the facts stand in the way of a good story. Thus we are reluctant to recommend the book when there are others, written as non-fiction, which don't require the reader to guess which parts are true and which are totally made up. Books like Black Boy and Black Like Me come to mind. Or I might mention the Jean Fritz books, with a section in the back carefully giving the historical basis for claims made in the text.
There are also some weaknesses in the plot. First of all, Cassie never accounts for how her grandfather, a former slave, was able to buy 200 acres on credit, nor how he was able to get credit to buy another 200 acres a few years later. Also, it's a bit hard to believe that a smart girl like Cassie could reach the age of nine without realizing what segregation was all about. It may be for the benefit of the reader to have it spelled out for her, but Cassie would have long since known.
Very Cool.......2004-05-04
I think this book was great. I read this book for my book report. I enjoyed the whole plot of it all. I enjoyed it being told from a 9-year-olds point of view. I like that Ms. Taylor didn't let everything just pop out. Like Cassie's parents just didn't tell her everything. She found out most of the stuff either by sneaking around or by asking Stacey her older brother. Some of the parts were confusing. And others were a little boring, well I shouldn't say that I guess slow going is the word. Overall I think this book was very exciting and you should buy it why you can. I promise you YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
Roll of Thunder Hear My Thoughts.......2003-03-07
I gave this book a 4. I thought it was a great book. I enjoyed reading it.The reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is beause there were some parts of the story that I got confused and didnt understand what was going on.It took me a while to understand some of the stuff they were talking about. Some parts I thought were slow and kind of boring.I would have liked it if they showed T.J. having the conversation with the Wallaces about Mrs.Logan.
The Characters in this story were very realistic. The book was very well written with detail and as I was reading it I could picture what was going on.I liked how the book was written through the eyes of a young girl whose name was Cassey.Cassey was very brave and willing to do anything for her family.I think she takes after her Uncle Hammer. This book reminds me of the book Watsons Go To Birmingham. When I was in seventh grade I read the prequil to roll of Thunder called"the Land" and now that I have read Roll of Thunder I understand better what is going on with the family.
I thought this book was excellent and it helped me understand what black families went through.I liked the overall purpose of the book and the subject of it.The Logans are trying to get all their bills payed so that their land doesn't get taken away from them.It is uniquely written because the kids dont't know what is going on and how the white families treat black people out side of their town. You can deffinately tell that the don't know what prejudice people act like to them when they take the trip to Strawberry.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent complement to Yurugu.......2006-11-28
Dr. Ani is most known for her detailed critique of European culture, "Yurugu". Unfortunately, that book is out of print. There is a hardcover of it selling for 591 bucks here, and a paperback for 98, which gives you some idea of just how valuable this brilliant sister's words are, even if mainstream America (White Folks) have completely and totally shunned her work. But, who cares? She writes for and to us, not them.
What fools we would be if we allowed the children of our parents' slavemasters to dictate to us what ideas we should believe.
"Let the Circle be Unbroken" is just as brilliant a work as "Yurugu", but this time our sister warrior speaks on African culture, in particular the spiritual implications of it. She ends with some insightful solutions to surviving the inhumane challenges of New Europe.
A plus with "Let the Circle be Unbroken" is that Dr. Ani has held back more so than with "Yurugu". What I mean is that "Yurugu" is very much a scholarly work and can be difficult for laypeople to get through, even though we must! But, "Let the Circle be Unbroken" is a considerably easier read. Also, she has taken a page from Na'im Akbar's writings and has kept the number of pages to well below 100.
