Book Description
This book, the second in the series on the avifauna of Indonesia, introduces the reader to the most typical and colourful birds of the large islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, whose dipterocarp forests of the lowlands and wetland forest of the coastal plains are particularly rich habitats. The main descriptions covering 148 species from nearly every bird family on the two islands, provide information on the plumage, behaviour, habitat, and distribution to enable the general naturalist to identify most of the birds found readily in the different habitats of the islands. Reference is also made in the text to a further 129 species to illustrate the range and variety of birds in each family. It is hoped that this book will encourage a greater interest in birds in particular, and wildlife in general, and foster an increased awareness of the need to protect an adequate area of some of the richest habitats in the world while there is still time.
Book Description
This book addresses the politics of environmental change in one of the richest areas of tropical rainforest in Indonesia. Based on field studies conducted in three agricultural communities in rural Aceh, this work considers a number of questions: How do customary (adat) village and state institutions work? What roles do they play in managing local resources? How have they evolved over time? Are villagers, state policies, or corrupt local networks responsible for the loss of tropical rainforest? Will better outcomes emerge from revitalizing customary management, from changing state policies, or from transforming the way the state works? And why do projects designed by outsiders so often fail?
The book describes how, as key actors interact, they create arrangements that effectively manage local resources, eclipsing adat and formal state management structures. While outside interventions try to work with adat and the state, they fail to engage fully with the main problem—that is, that district webs of power and interest, coalescing around local resources and reaching into the wider society, lead inexorably to environmental decline.

Great mammal guide for the tourist........2001-04-02
Similar in layout to the other New Holland guides. Thereby making it obvious that it is not intended for the scientist. Small and handy, perfect for a pocket. However, do not think it only covers a small number of the best known mammals. Several newly discovered mammals are included (e.g. a strange ungulate called the Saola, and a beautifully striped rabbit only discovered in the late 1990's). Most of these are interesting but would never be encountered by the "normal backpacker". Several rarities are also included for example the Lesser One-horned Rhino, of which it is believed that only approx. 60 individuals survives. Almost all of the larger mammals known to occur in this region are described individually with at least one (usually very good) colour photo. The small number of large species not described are almost always mentioned in the description of a relative. The smaller mammals (bats, insectivores etc.) are described in groups (also with at least one photo) usually comprising a genus. The text is strait forward and easy to read for everybody with average English skills. However do not forget your glasses, the text is very small! The text itself is good and actually quite long with the books size in mind. It usually comprises of id, range (no maps!), behaviour, habitat etc. Each species description (incl. photo) comprises 2-1/2 page. A great thing for the novice is the use of easily recognisable thumbnails (an example being deer). Thereby it shouldn't be a problem finding the species your looking for. In the intro of the book a chapter speaks about finding and observing mammals, and 31 national parks or reserves are also mentioned briefly. The thing I find most annoying is the very small number of dark or unclear photos. Another thing to remember is that the book doesn't included whales or dolphins other than the one species which regularly enters fresh water. With the prise and size in mind everybody travelling to this area should bring a copy.

Book Description
The position of Sumatra as a link between continental South East Asia and the other main Sunda islands has attracted the attention of naturalists and explorers for many centuries, but the biological richness of the island has been somewhat neglected. This volume gives a critical appraisal of the methods used in vegetation survey in the tropics, and in the utilization of geomorphology, pedology, climatology in preparing sampling procedures for the vegetation.
The proposed small-scale eco-floristic physiographical classification forms the basis for future monitoring of deforestation. A study of relationships between biophysical gradients and forest types, floristic mosaics and vegetation dynamics has enabled Laumonier to identify future study sites using phyto-ecological criteria. A great deal of information is incorporated on the structure, flora and ecological characteristics of a surprising diversity of vegetation types. The nature and diversity of Sumatran tropical forests turns out to have been insufficiently understood, leading the author to surmise that the actual modelling of forest function is premature in most cases, and that future research programmes are needed in Sumatra, if a proper balance is to be found between agricultural development and nature conservation.
Audience: An extremely important, landmark study of Malaysian vegetation, of interest to students and professionals in plant science, tropical botany, ecology, biogeography, climatology, physical geography, and remote sensing as applied to vegetation science.
Customer Reviews:
modeling a future.......2001-07-06
Perhaps this work needs not just a review, but a following. This volume is a landmark in Laumonier's career as one of the top botanists now working in Indonesian rainforests, but much of this will come to naught if government-sponsored development in these areas wins out. Those of us who buy this book should seriously consider the costs of losing not only the subject of two decades of this scholar's research, but also one of the most diverse ecological landscapes on the planet.
A detailed, relevant work in Geobotany........1999-02-23
I found Laumonier's book on tropical rainforest ecology, tropical botany, vegetation science and mapping extremely and beautifully compiled. A must for any individual involved or even interested in the subject area.
Wonderful book, and insightful towards tropical rain forests.......1999-02-05
Laumonier has done an excellent job depicting the complex and beautiful intricacies of tropical rain forests. After over twenty years in Indonesia, and working intimately with Sumatran forests, Laumonier has produced a very instightful book. Looking at Sumatran vegetation from various perspectives, I highly recommend this book to teachers, researchers, and students who have an interestest in tropical ecology.

Book Description
The only thing you need to know about Las Vegas is that everything you've heard about it is true. Everything. Sure, you might not choose to believe all of it, and you may not have time to find it all during your stay, but it really is all there: glamour, glory, excess, decadence, style, delusion . . . and maybe, if you play your cards right, fortune. With the help of a team of local writers who live in Sin City year-round, Time Out Las Vegas offers an unparalleled guide to this most absurd, fascinating, and magnificent of cities. Exhaustive casino reviews cover guest rooms, on-site restaurants, shops, floorshows, and gambling, from the cheapest tables to the richest jackpots. A separate chapter covers visceral pleasures like showgirls, strip joints, and swingers' clubs. And when it's time to get away from it all, Time Out Las Vegas also offers mini-guides to the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Death Valley and even Los Angeles.
Customer Reviews:
THE most helpful travel guides around :-).......2007-09-03
To me, Time Out guides are the best you can buy. They are better than Lonely Planet and Frommers and anything else on the market. They are very in-depth, colorful, heaps of photos, so informative and often go the extra mile by adding bonus pages on either the history of the city, or the culture or anything of even minimal interest.
This 2007 edition is choc-full of anything you wanted to know for your vacation to Vegas and day trips to other places like Arizona, California and Utah. It even has a mini segment about gambling and lessons on how to play some of the more popular games in the casino. There are listings in the back for hospitals, websites for where to find dentists, list of radio stations, post offices and almost anything you could want to find. It covers where to stay from budget to grand opulence, what to do with or without kids, maps of the Strip and surrounding areas and of course my absolute favourite topics - food and shopping.
By the time you read this guide, you will be a novice of Vegas whether you've already been before or going for the first time. I'm about to go to Vegas for my 12th time and I still find this book of use. I highly highly recommend it and recommed their other guides for other great cities around the world.
Best All-In One Las Vegas Book I Have Found!.......2000-06-19
Great Book! nice size, easy to carry with you when in Las Vegas. The best overview of Las Vegas I have found (I have them all). Lots of detail in this book that are not in the others, even includes a section on outside the Vegas area for day trips (Hover Dam, Area 51, Lake Mead, & many more). Great sections on Accommodations, Restaurants & Buffets, Night Life, Adult Entertainment, Art Culture, Gambling, History, Comps, Weddings, Casinos, & much more. Reads easy like a good magazine, lots of nice color pictures. Detailed maps also included. The only book you will need. I reccomend highly.
Las Vegas - looking beyond the rose-tinted spectacles.......2000-06-12
This book will help the average person planning a Las Vegas experience avoid many of the usual overhype and embrace the real city. It covers the subjects that are usually taboo and is not scared to say if something is third rate. Get the new version June 2000 and go there and be a high roller. But keep the taxi fare home :-)))
Best Las Vegas Guide that I have found..........2000-04-01
This small (easily-packable) guide gives you a good overview of the Las Vegas experience. There is also enough detail to help you plan an exciting trip. Look for the sections on Coffee Shops and supplies for exotic dancers. The authors/editors have done a super job of awakening your curiosity about a place that may seem one-dimensional and ho-hum at first glance. I also enjoyed the information on side trips at the back of the book. Las Vegas is a great destination on its own, but "Time Out" clarifies some happy opportunities for exploring the West in conjuction with a Vegas trip. Maps are also noteworthy for their relevance and easy-to-understand format. I must have looked at and rejected twenty guide books before I found this gem.

Book Description
Simone’s starting her junior year in high school. Her mom’s a lawyer for the ACLU, her dad’s a political cartoonist, so she’s grown up standing outside the organic food coop asking people to sign petitions for worthy causes. She’s got a terrific younger brother and amazing friends. And she’s got a secret crush on a really smart and funny guy–who spends all of his time with another girl.
Then her birth mother contacts her. Simone’s always known she was adopted, but she never wanted to know anything about it. She’s happy with her family just as it is, thank you.
She learns who her birth mother was–a 16-year-old girl named Rivka. Who is Rivka? Why has she contacted Simone? Why now? The answers lead Simone to deeper feelings of anguish and love than she has ever known, and to question everything she once took for granted about faith, life, the afterlife, and what it means to be a daughter.
Customer Reviews:
A 2007 Association of Jewish Libraries Honor Award Winner for Teens.......2007-01-28
Sixteen-year-old Simone has always known that she is adopted and that her birth mother is a woman named Rivka. But, when Simone learns that Rivka is the daughter of a Hasidic Rabbi who accidentally got pregnant as a teenager, Simone's whole life and identity is turned up-side down. As Simone gets to know Rivka, who is dying from ovarian cancer, she also learns about Judaism, celebrating Shabbat, Hanukkah, and Passover, experiences her first relationship with a boy, and comes to terms with her own spiritual identity. Reinhardt's characters are smart, sassy, realistic American teenagers and her portrayal of a warm, loving, functional adoptive family is refreshing. Highly readable, fast-paced, and thought-provoking, A Brief Chapter in My Impossible Life will be enjoyed by YA readers of all faiths.
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-01-08
Sixteen-year-old Simone has always known she was adopted but has never questioned it. She's aware of her dark features in her family of blond hair and fair skin. Her "parents" have talked to her about her birth mother, a woman named Rivka, but Simone has never wanted to learn more simply because she's happy with the family she has.
Then, one day, Rivka calls and wants to get in contact with Simone. With her parents urging her along, Simone is going to face her past--her real mother, her real family, and her true cultural background.
This book was a real treat to read. I enjoyed the different scenes and elements it contained: Simone meeting Rivka and learning the story of her adoption; Simone speaking up for her beliefs (she's an atheist who supports abortion); and Simone dealing with her high school crush.
All in all, this is a book definitely worth reading.

A brief chapter worth reading.......2006-11-11
Simone Turner-Bloom is your average above-average teenager. She has a mother, a father and a younger brother. She lives in an upper middle class home and is an excellent student with a gift for math. But, Simone is different from most of her peers in one significant way. She's adopted and doesn't look like her parents or her brother. This doesn't bother her much, because she's happy in her family and really feels an integral part of the Turner-Bloom home.
One day, however, Simone's parents tell her that her birth mother, Rivka, wants to meet her. Simone struggles with this decision for months until, finally, she agrees to invite Rivka to Thanksgiving dinner. And, guess what? Simone finds herself drawn to her young birth mother and they begin a close relationship as Simone finds out about her past from her birth mother. Part of Rivka's past is Judaism, and atheist Simone is drawn to Rivka's practice of Judaism and its culture.
There's a hitch, however, in this happy new relationship and it is the reason Rivka sought Simone out before adulthood. Rivka's sick with ovarian cancer and only has months to live. And, in the background of these momentous changes in Simone's life are everyday teenage challenges--first kisses, boyfriends, a friend's family troubles, etc.
"a brief chapter in my impossible life" is different from most YA fiction in one, very unique way. Everyone involved--from Simone, to her friends and family, past and present--is essentially good. There's no abuse, alcoholism, or cutting in this book. It's a gorgeous examination of what happens when an extraordinary, but perfectly understandable, event challenges an essentially good, well-meaning teen.
Reviewers write a lot about how YA fiction offers much to teens who are struggling with issues, but books like "a brief chapter in my impossible life" are important too. Simone and her story, minus the adoption and math genius issues, are easily recognizable to me and I suspect will be to many teen readers.
"a brief chapter in my impossible life" is a beautifully written story. Simone's voice is strong and sympathetic. "a brief chapter in my impossible life" reminded me most of Justina Chen Headley's "Nothing But the Truth (and a few white lies)." Both are highly recommended.
Impossible to Resist.......2006-10-23
Simone is a fairly well-adjusted teenager who is about to have her life turned upside down. She has known since she was a little girl that she was adopted, but she has never met her biological parents. She has never considered her adoptive parents anything less than Mom and Dad, and she loves them as much as and as well as her younger brother.
Then the phone rings. Simone's biological mother, Rivka has called in hopes that she can finally meet her sixteen-year-old daughter. Simone is understandably anxious about their first meeting, and becomes even more troubled after Rivka gives her some undeniably sad news.
A Brief Chapter in My Impossible Life by Dana Reinhardt is a double delight: a fantastic debut novel and a fantastic novel, PERIOD. It deals with family, friends, and fears - high school, home, and hope - love, laughter, and loss. This book's wit and wisdom will stay with readers for a long time. Highly recommended.
A BRIEF CHAPTER IN MY IMPOSSIBLE LIFE.......2006-10-04
Simone has always known she was adopted, but has suppressed any curiosity about her past. However, when her birth mother Rivka develops cancer, she invites Simone to get in touch, to learn about her heritage before it is too late. Simone and Rivka develop a strong relationship even as Rivka is dying. An interesting twist to the story is that Simone has been raised as a gentile atheist while Rivka is a liberal Jew with a Hasidic background. While Simone makes an effort to learn about the rituals that enrich Rivka's life, the question of her own religious identity remains open-ended. Rivka's Hasidic family remains distant and unreceptive to Simone.
The "Jewish angle" of the story is interesting, but the main focus is on Simone's relationships and growing maturity. The author has even made it easy on her protagonist by giving her a neutral non-believing family rather than one whose beliefs would present conflicts with Judaism. Because the Jewish aspect of the story is not essential to the plot, the book may be considered an additional purchase for Jewish libraries. However, this is a well-written and emotionally charged novel that would make an excellent book for discussion groups, and would be appropriate for Jewish collections serving teens. Communities must consider whether the accepting attitudes towards premarital sex and homosexuality among Simone's friends make the book right for their libraries. Appropriate for high school readers.
