      Book Description

This unique dictionary is an authoritative and up-to-date reference book on all aspects of the study of plants. While many of the over 5,000 entries in The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Botany have been taken from the highly acclaimed Oxford Dictionary of Natural History, a substantial number
have been written especially for this volume. Completely comprehensive, this dictionary offers concise and accessible explanations of terms from biogeology, evolution, earth history, and all the earth sciences, as well as up-to-date entries on more current fields of interest such as ecology,
genetics, plant physiology, biochemistry, and cytology. In addition, the book offers world-wide coverage of taxonomic groups and takes full account of recent taxonomical revisions. One-third of the entries are devoted to taxa, from bacteria and fungi to the main groups of flowering and
non-flowering plants. Brief biographical sketches of important botanists are also included.
With almost twice the number of entries as any similar dictionary, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Botany is perfect for amateur botanists, and anyone interested in the world around us.

      Book Description

The study of plant development using molecular and genetic techniques is rapidly becoming one of the most active areas of research on flowering plants. The aim of this book is to present a sense of the accomplishments of the past and of the outstanding problems of the future in the study of plant development. An important feature of this book is the integration of results from molecular and genetic studies on various aspects of plant development in a cellular and physiological context. Of particular interest to readers will be the clear treatment of each landmark stage in the life cycle of plants such as seed germination, seedling growth, flowering, gametogenesis, pollen-pistil interactions, embryogenesis, fruit ripening, and seed and bud dormancy. The book also considers the development of individual plant organs such as the shoot, leaf, root and flowers as well as alternate developmental strategies of plants.

          Book Description

During the last two decades the modern techniques of histochemistry, electron microscopy, plant physiology, biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, immunology, and genetics have been applied to investigate the intricacies of the processes involved in embryo formation, and considerable new information has been generated. A better understanding of these processes has enhanced our capacity to manipulate fertilization and embryo development. This has changed the face of the embryology of angiosperms from a descriptive science to an experimental and applied science. The revolutionary progress made in this fascinating field of sexual reproduction was the motivation to prepare this volume. It includes 21 chapters written by experts who have made substantial contributions to their respective fields. It covers all aspects of the embryology of angiosperms, ranging from development, isolation, and structure of male and female gametes, their fusion in vivo and in vitro, and structure, physiology, and genetics of zygotic embryogenesis, to endosperm and seed development. Advances in somatic embryogenesis, synthetic seed technology and regeneration of haploid plants from male and female gametophytes are discussed. Other important topics covered in this volume are sexual incompatibility, parthenocarpy, and apomixis. The last chapter deals with the embryological perspective of inheritance of extra-nuclear genes. All the chapters contain up-to-date information and are profusely illustrated. Graduate and postgraduate students, teachers, and scientists of botany and other areas of plant sciences will find this book extremely useful.

            Book Description

"Double Fertilization" provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of this central event in the reproduction and development of flowering plants. Written by Val Raghavan, The Ohio State University, an acknowledged expert in plant developmental biology, the book vividly describes the molecular and cellular steps of the unique and complex fertilization process that culminates in the formation of embryo and endosperm, focusing on the latest results from the model plant Arabidopsis. The text is complemented by excellent illustrations, including 16 color plates.

Since embryo and endosperm constitute the edible parts of many seeds and grains widely used in human and animal nutrition, an understanding of the fertilization process has great relevance for genetic engineering aimed at improving the nutritional quality of crop plants. This book is ideally suited to researchers and graduate students seeking a coherent view of current perspectives on embryogenesis and endosperm development in flowering plants.

              Book Description

For the first time in synoptic form, this book presents a clear account of the most recent knowledge of embryogenesis in flowering plants. A multidisciplinary approach is adopted bringing together the foundations of tissue culture, biochemistry, and cell and molecular biology which have supported the rapid progress of research in angiosperm development. In the first part of the book, the author draws a broad picture of the processes involved in embryogenesis. A brief introduction to procedures is followed by chapters on developmental, cellular, biochemical and experimental aspects of embryogenesis, and on somatic and pollen embryogenesis. Later sections on the regulation of gene expression and mechanisms of programming developmental information precede a treatment of some practical applications resulting from the study of embryos. Two techniques discussed which are aimed towards the goal of enhancing crop productivity in a dynamic and expanding field are embryo rescue from inviable crosses and preservation of germ plasm.

                  Book Description

Drawing from a lifetime of teaching botany, Dr. Nels Lersten presents the study of the structures and processes involved in the reproduction of plants in his text Flowering Plant Embryology. This richly illustrated reference text, with more than 350 figures and illustrations, presents general angiosperm embryology as it applies to economically important plants. The unique focus on economically important species increases the relevance of this book to today 's students and researchers in the plant sciences.Lersten emphasizes the plant species that affect human livelihood, including weeds and other cultivated plants that are used for commercial products. Selected from the thousands of economically important plants, the examples chosen for illustration and discussion are familiar, especially to students from North America, Northern Europe, and Japan. Although the emphasis of this book is economically important plants, the information within applies to almost all flowering plants.Extremely readable and well-written, this book is neither dense nor academic in tone. Lersten treats topics with a uniformity of style and organization that enhances comprehension. Terms are well-defined and the derivation of each is explained to further facilitate student learning. The book presents research results, hypotheses, and speculations about why things are as they are, with supporting facts and specific examples that provide a firm foundation for students ' understanding of embryological diversity among economic plants.

                    Book Description

This book presents a general picture of our current understanding of plant embryology from the formation of floral organs concerned with embryological processes to the genetic manipulation of embryos. Against the background of classical embryological studies, chapters in this book highlight, from a molecular-genetic perspective, investigations on the development of the male and female reproductive units, male sterility, incompatibility, fertilization, embryo and endosperm development, storage protein synthesis and adventive embryogenesis in flowering plants. Dramatic new developments in molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques have opened up new frontiers in our commercial exploitation of flowering plants. Manipulation of embryological processes to improve the quantity and quality of plant food products is one of the cherished goals of plant biologists and the work described in this book provides the up-to-date fundamental information necessary to achieve this goal.
