Customer Reviews:
AN IMPORTANT GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR CANINE COMPANION.......1999-02-02
I'm surprised noone has commented on this wonderful book yet! This was one of my first dog books (and believe me, I have alot) and it's still one of the best. Michael Fox gives excellent in depth information on the intellegence and abilities of canines. Nearly half the book covers ways to understand the dog's thought process & habits and how to decode the dog's language. I have found all this information to be quite accurate. In addition to these guides, Fox provides important chapters on how to correctly raise a puppy. These completely cover the socialization process and include a chapter on dogs and kids, among other things. Fox also touches on the subjects of the dog's sixth sense and animal rights. The last two chapters provide IQ and Temperment Tests you can use in choosing a new dog or evaluating your own. There is also a helpful appendix of FAQs including bad habits, neutering, and overcoming car fear. Although Fox doesn't provide extensive information on ways to train your dog, the obedience chapter is thorough (and humane) and simple to read & understand. -Great for quick reference! There is a good amount of advice included on types of training methods and theories.
This is a MUST read book for any dog lover!

For sophomores John and Lorraine, the world feels meaningless; nothing is important. They certainly can never please their parents, and school is a chore. To pass the time, they play pranks on unsuspecting people. It's during one of these pranks that they meet the "Pigman"--a fat, balding old man with a zany smile plastered on his face. In spite of themselves, John and Lorraine soon find that they're caught up in Mr. Pignati's zest for life. In fact, they become so involved that they begin to destroy the only corner of the world that's ever mattered to them. Originally published in 1968, this novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Zindel still sings with sharp emotion as John and Lorraine come to realize that "Our life would be what we made of it--nothing more, nothing less."
Book Description
A Most Unusual Friendship
When sophomores John and Lorraine played a practical joke a few months ago on a stranger named Angelo Pignati, they had no idea what they were starting. Virtually overnight, almost against their will, the two befriended the lonely old man; it wasn't long before they were more comfortable in his house than their own. But now Mr. Pignati is dead. And for John and Lorraine, the only way to find peace is to write down their friend's story -- the story of the Pigman.
Customer Reviews:
Jeremy's rating.......2007-10-06
I really enjoyed this book. It was very fun to read, and unique. I liked how Paul Zindel told the story from the two kids sides. It kept me guessing the whole time. It was set in a town, where many high school kids lived and hung out. Most of the time, the kids enjoyed setting bombs in the bathroom, disrupting class, and prank phone calls. But their rank calls were put to an end when they called Mr.Pignati. or the Pigman. Two sophmores, John and Lorraine, called him as a fake charity, looking for donations. They went there, and the three soon became friends. The Pigman was very lonely. His wife "went on vacation to California," as he said. He collects glass pigs, and spends time at the zoo with the monkeys. Then, one day, while John and Lorraine were roller-skating with the Pigman, he had a heart attack.
Mr.Pignati was fine, but he had to spend a few days in the hospital. So, Lorraine and John try to throw a party for Mr.Pignati's return. But things get way out of hand. The girls mess up the Pigman's wife's clothes (who turns out to be deceased). The guys make the place into a dump, and break his pigs. The Pigman returns, and falls into a deep depression.
John and Lorraine want to make the Pigman feel better. So, they take him to the zoo. They go straight to the monkey house, and Mr. Pignati starts calling for Bobo, his favorite monkey friend at the zoo. A man tells them that Bobo died, and Mr. Pignati gets even sadder. As John and Lorraine turn to leave, Mr. Pignati collapses, and dies.
The book was very sad, i thought, but it was a good book.
Not Very Realistic.......2007-09-03
Two bored and lonely high school sophomores from dysfunctional, apathetic families are searching for acceptance, attention, and contentment. They find that for which they yearn in each other and in Angelo Pignati, a lonely, unusual, gentle man who collects ceramic pigs. Upon encountering the pigman, as they referred to him, by randomly calling people in the phone book, John and Lorraine are bewildered by his kindheartedness, candidness and attentiveness to them. The three atypical friends share simple pleasures, including visits to the zoo to feed Bobo, the vicious baboon that the pigman had previously been visiting and feeding on a daily basis. Sadly, in an effort to maintain the approval of their peers, John and Lorraine violate the pigman's trust. The pigman does forgive them, but the disappointment he feels lingers until it is exacerbated by the additional devastation of Bobo's death.
Although long-winded and slow-moving at times, Zindel adds realism to his characterizations by writing this story in the first person. He begins his story with a signed pact between John and Lorraine and continues the story in the first person, alternating between chapters narrated by John and others by Lorraine. The use of typical teen dialect makes the characters very appealing to young adults, although the subject may not be of much interest. Zindel effectively uses the repetition of the theme of pigs throughout his plot, a strong archetypal symbol of the selfishness that is the demise of the teens. The integral settings, from the exotic atmosphere of the zoo to the eccentric home of the pigman, fill the reader with intense images that reinforce the impact of the story. Although the style, characters, and settings are intriguing, the weak denouement lacks the impact that would make for a more memorable impression.
The Pigman.......2007-02-28
For two adolescents, the world seemed unimportant, worthless, due to theire type of life. These two adolescents, John and Lorraine, are different; John would over-age himself and drink beer and pull pranks on people; school was useless/ meaningless on his point of view. While Lorraine would think of school like something neutral, and she is always kind (in a way). During there normal live's, they meet a man that totally changed their life7 gave it a twist, this was Mr. Pignati (A.K.A Pigman). Both of them become so involved with him, that they almost forget about their way of living before meeting him; life would never be the same for John and Lorraine after meeting "The Pigman."
Wonderful book though it is now almost entering the realm of historical fiction!.......2007-01-19
This is a wonderful book to use with late middle school or early high school classes. The book is a bit dated and might need a little bit of teacher explanation about the "old days" of the 1960's but John, Lorraine and their friends are timeless and so is Mr. Pignati. I love the way Zindel alternates the chapters between John and Lorraine's voices. It supplies a great way to teach kids about point of view and characterization. And I'll never forget the story Mr. Pignati teaches John and Lorraine about the woman, her husband, her lover, a boatman and an assassin. That little fable makes for great discussions (and a personality test of sorts) that kids often take home to their families and share with friends.
Not what I expected.......2006-12-30
I thought the pigman is a great book to read. I like it because they talk about a lot of topics like on teens for example. I thought when John, Lorraine and the others did the telephone marathon it was cute yet mischeivious in a way. I also thought it was sort of cheesy.
The saddest part of the book was when the pigman died. He didn't deserve to. And Bobo too. I thought that was sad too. Anyway pigman is the best!

Book Description
The Pigman's return ...
Four months after the Pigman died, John and Lorraine are passing by their old friend's empty house when they receive the shock of their lives: An elderly man has taken up residence in the abandoned home. Convinced this down-and-out recluse is a sign from beyond the grave, John and Lorraine decide they've been given a chance to make up for what happened to the Pigman -- a chance to make things right, once and for all.
Customer Reviews:
What happened after The Pigman died?.......2005-01-28
How did John and Lorraine's life change after this experience? It started out pretty good. John gave up drinking and started smoking spinach (spinach?) cigarettes at Lorraine's urging. John and Lorraine yell at anyone who's mean to the lunch lady. But their lives are still going nowhere. They meet another old man and try to do it over the right way this time but it's just not the same. The new old man is cranky and rude, the kids aren't really needed in this story as the lunch lady befriends the old man and takes care of everything. The Game of Life was interesting but that's about it.
It definately did not feel like you were stepping into a teen's world. It just seemed like a grown up who had fond memories of drinking, smoking, swearing, cutting class, driving crazy and has major gambling problems (He also has fantasies that he could meet a nice girl who would be fine with all this). This sequel to The Pigman was totally unbelievable and I would reccommend that you skip this book and write your own sequel, I know it would be better than this one.
John and Lorraine's relationship stays respectable. The word sex is mentioned a lot but not as it relates to John and Lorraine. I would agree that the book would be rated PG-13.
The pIGMAN.......2003-03-21
I find this book to be very well written. I also think The Pigman is a very sad book that could bring out strong emotion from any reader. This is not one of the books I would normally read but it did impress me. Even though I liked the book, I would not consider The Pigman to be one of my all time favorite books. This book started out slowly, and I had to keep my eyes from drifting off the page, but by the time the major conflicts had been revealed, I could not put the book down.
(4-1/2 stars) Even better than the first.......2002-05-30
The Pigman is one of my favorite books, so of course I was ecstatic when I discovered that Paul Zindel wrote a followup. And it turns out that The Pigman's Legacy is even better. John and Lorraine have now turned sixteen and continue on zany adventures, as well as discussing the pros and cons of their own life.
The only problem with this book is the same problem that came with the first book, and that is a very important outcome that is given away in the introduction (they call it "The Promise"). My suggestion is to skip the promise and go on with the rest of the book. You'll enjoy it.
outstanding.......2001-12-25
This book was so good that i could never put it down. I read this book for a test in school and i got every question right! Paul Zidel is a great author and one of my favorites. This story basically ends what the first Pigman story didnt. It can teach children lots of important morals in life by John and Lorraines experiances. The way that this story is written is almost like watching a movie in the theaters. Believe me it takes alot to have sit and read a book. I would of never found reading interesting if it wasnt for this book!
koolie.......2001-08-26
This book was a great sequel to The Pigman, the ending was great.. i would read the first one before this one

Book Description
Eight hundred and fifty-three horrifying things had happened to me by the time I was a teenager. That was when I met my Pigman, whose real name was Nonno Frankie.
The year Paul Zindel, his sister, Betty, and their mother lived in the town of Travis, Staten Island, New York, was the most important time of his teenage life. It was the year he and Jennifer Wolupopski were best friends. It was the year of the apple tree, the water-head baby, and Cemetery Hill. And it was the year he met Nonno Frankie Vivona, who became his Pigman.
Every word of his story is true. And The Pigman & Me has an added bonus--one crucial piece of information: the secret of life, according to the Pigman.
Customer Reviews:
The Pigman and Me By Paul Zindel.......2006-03-11
The Pigman and Me is an autobiography of the life of Paul Zindel. This book consists of the many experiences of his teenage years living in Travis, Staten Island, New York. My personal favorite part of this book is the relationship between Paul and his Pigman, Nonno Frankie. Paul ends up learning a countless number of things from Nonno Frankie including the secret to life. I usually don't like to read non-fiction books, but this was really amazing. The truth in this book is much more interesting than what you would find in a fiction book because you know that it's true. Although Paul experiences many difficulties fitting in in his new school and neighborhood, he gains so much making new friends and learning so much about life. Many of his hardships also include his mother's emotional and financial problems. He is also without a father, which is a spot in his life that actually seems to be filled by the Pigman. One of the greatest friends he makes is one of his neighbors, Jennifer Wolupopski. Overall, this book has a very strong middle but the ending isn't quite as good as I hoped it would have been. I would still recommend it to any teenager or preteen between the ages of 11-16.
nonfiction for fiction lovers.......2005-07-09
My 12 year old daughter loves Harry Potter and Sammy Keyes. She moaned when I insisted that she read a biography this summer. Lucky for her, The Pigman and Me was with the biographies in the "young adult" section of our library. It was not what I'd had in mind, but she absolutely loved it.
The pigman and me.......2004-11-13
I read the book The Pigman and Me By paul zindel. This is the second book in the series that I have read, I enjoyed both very much. Each book in the series has its own separate caracters, story, and its own losson.
In this particular book the caracters are interesting. There are there are Betty and Paul who are the children, there is a mother who is a huge part of the story. The mother has a friend named Connie Vivona Who has twins named nicky and joey. The other caracters are nono Frankie and nono Mamie, who is the daughter of Connie Vivona. All the caracters are Italian.
The story is being told in retrospect by paul. Most of the story is taking place in Travis, Staten Island when they were living there.
The story tells of them when they were teenagers and didnt have any money. They would move from house to house when the rent was due. They had many finantial and emotional strugles. They learn about friendships, confidence and the importance of helping each other.
You will enjoy finding out the meaning of the pigman and who he is in the story.
Starts out great, but..........2004-08-29
If you want to feel good at the end of a story, this is not the book for you. It's a fascinating glimpse into the real life of an author, and it's a neat exploration into a time and region that no longer exists. But the end of the book, in it's honesty, makes you feel kind of sad and cynical. Hmm bummer.
The Pigman & Me by: paul zindel.......2004-02-23

Book Description
For most of the sixteenth century, English poets were clearly anxious about the grief expressed in their funeral poems and often rebuked themselves for indulging in it, but towards the end of the century this defensiveness about mourning became less pressing and persistent. The shift is part of a wider cultural change which has escaped recognition: the emergence of a more compassionate attitude towards the process of mourning. In charting the development of elegy this book analyses poems by Surrey, Spenser, Jonson, Henry King and Milton, and also surveys a wide range of forgotten verse, both English and neo-Latin, as well as letter-writing handbooks and moral-theological tracts. The book culminates in a detailed study of the most famous elegy in the language, Milton’s Lycidas.
