5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction To Iceland.......2004-12-03

I have been to Iceland several times and find it to be the most unique country imaginable. This book is very thin, but is packed with generally very accurate and always extremely useful information as well as great color photography. This book is wonderful to use as a starting point for planning a trip to Iceland, and it is small enough to carry with you everywhere when you are there.

The book provides an overview, geographic information, hotel, restaurant, and nightlife recommendations, and multiple road trips of varying lengths that see all the common sights and many that are substantially off the beaten path. These road trips are from one to four days endurance, and are very well designed from my experience, although I can't personally attest to the attributes of the ring road between Hvammstangi and Neskaupatadur. I can say that the southern routes, and the routes to Pingvellir and the Snaefellsnes peninsula are very well designed. My favorites of the tours are numbers three and four. The coverage of the Skaftafell National Park, Jokulsarlon glacial lake (a must see: take the boat ride), Hvannadalsshnukur, Kirkjubaejarklaustur (one of my favorite little towns), Porsmork, and Stykkisholmur is particularly good. I was also amused by the coverage of the Vesturfarasafnid a Hofsofi, the only museum in the world that focuses exclusively on herring. (Iceland is known for many similar oddities, and that is one reason I love it so much.)

My only minor critiques of the book would be that the index is rather sparse, and some of the hotel and restaurant information (and a few prices) are out of date (which is to be expected.) One thing the book entirely failed to mention in the money section is that most businesses will take Icelandic kronurs and also US dollars.

This is a great little introductory tour guide to Iceland, with the emphasis on brevity and utility. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars great coffeetable book.......2006-02-07

When I first flipped through the pages of this book I was in awe - the photographs are just amazing, and suddenly I wished I had several weeks to explore this fascinating country, not just a 4 day stopover. The book also gives a great overview of Iceland, it's culture, history, places to visit. If you know nothing of Iceland (like me!) then it is a great starting point for figuring out what you want to see and do. The pictures alone will get you excited!

But when I actually started to try put together an itinerary, it was useless. I tried, and tried, and tried...then reverted back to old faithful Lonely Planet. They just know how to put a guidebook together. I would not recommend the Insight Guide as a book to take with you. It is big, heavy, and pretty useless when it comes to finding your way around. Besides, you wouldn't want to spoil it as it is such a nice souvenir! I couldn't even bring myself to dog-ear the pages.

So I bought the LP, it is already dog-earred and covered in notes and that's the book I will be taking with me. But the Insight Guide is one that will stay on my coffeetable and be passed around among friends to show them just what an amazing place Iceland is.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide.......2005-09-13

I used the guide in Iceland and found it very readable, very informative, and great to have along.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures and thorough information.......2003-12-25

Let me introduce you to this Insight Guide on Iceland, the beautiful aurora borealis-lit island in the North Atlantic. I bought this book because it is adorned with some truly beautiful pictures, only to find out that its contents are of the same quality or better.

        < >

The information is provided in three ways:
YELLOW (pages 15-139): Just for this part, it is worth buying the book. Every little detail of Icelandic history, society and nature is given here. Vikings, whales and the notorious weather are dealt with, but also "the push for independence", the 300-species bird life, and the purifying of the Icelandic language.
BLUE (pages 147-327): Almost all places in Iceland are covered. It kicks off with Icelandic metropolis Reykjavík, and continues counter-clockwise around the whole island, supplying you with information about the attractions you'll encounter.
RED (pages 329-378): The practical side. Climate, cycling, what to buy, media... easy to find info for the quick look-up. Although it isn't the aim of the book to give EVERY tiny restaurant or hotel, and though you can find it elsewhere, quite a bit of those places are listed here. What follows is an emergency-style two-pages course in Icelandic, and after that the index, which could just be slightly better (too few things are covered). ****1/2

        < >

Too many to count: historic drawings, children, nature, towns... they show both the negative and the positive sides of the island: a desolate farm in the snow under an ink-blue sky, but also a young girl on her father's shoulders, with the national flag on Independance Day. *****

        < >

The lay out is very good. The reading pleasure is high, because a lot of different fonts are used, and the keywords in the text are bold. A word that refers to a place on the map is marked with (1), (2), (3), (...). The same sign is used on the map, which I found extremely useful and easy. Another good feature is the use of a mark at the top of the pages, saying: "Map on page xxx", so you don't have to look for the map yourself. *****

        < >

The book and the fat glossy paper feels good to the hands, the weight is perfect (thank God it's a paperback). The top side of the book is printed with the colors as shown above, so you can easily find what you are looking for. And there are two cover foldouts with maps of Iceland and Reykjavik bus routes. ****

        < >

This book is just what you need if you are planning a trip to Iceland, or after it to see where you've been and find more interesting facts and figures. Highly recommended. *****

        5 out of 5 stars A book with a bang!!!.......2002-02-05

I have scrutinized this book read and studied it. Very conscise for anyone who has no clue??? From past to present this book gives an excellent overview about Iceland and its many wonders including its volcanos and geysers. Colorfully illustrated all the way through. If you like short and to the point this book covers all travelling essentials(brief language tips per example)must buy for the wayward traveller backpackers included.

        4 out of 5 stars Stunning pictures!.......2001-12-22

There are some truly beautiful pictures in this book.
I certainly enjoyed Iceland during the winter, but these
pictures make it clear that summer is a real awesome time
there. The book also seems to do a pretty darn good job of
describing the society/culture of modern iceland.
I would certainly carry this one with me on my return
        trip...

4 out of 5 stars Great for Insight, OK for Travel.......2007-03-20

This book is something you'd want to read before going to Sweden, rather than lugging it along with you. However, it did have the best map of Stockholm in it of all of our travel books. You can usually pick up a decent map for free, though, when you get there in the back of the booklet that comes with a Stockholm Card.

The information in the book is great for getting more familiar with Sweden and Swedes, but not being a native-born Swede, I can vouch for its accuracy. It seemed pretty good to me, though.

4 out of 5 stars Insight Guide is usu great, this one is almost great!.......2001-06-21

This book is great for a good overview of the entire country--the history, the people, the food, the main attractions. It explains about the different parts of the country. Some of the pictures are just sterotypical Sweden--Sweden is much more diverse then people realize. They have immigrants from many countries. Scandinavia is a beautiful place. The museum details are not up to date, but this is hard because they change often and can be closed for various reasons. Be sure to do research before you go there if you have specific places you want to see. Otherwise just head over and wander the streets and you will find great stuff. This is more of a book to read before you go rather then to carry around with you while you are there. The Iceland Insight Guide is great. As a side note: I lived in Stockholm, Sweden for one year working. I visited all of the Scandinavian countries and Finland while I was there.

5 out of 5 stars Insight Guide Sweden.......2000-06-26

Being Swedish, it is always fun to read how other see Sweden and Swedes'. It is a great book that is more in depth on real life and how people are. You will feel that you know the people more after you have read the book. This whole series of Insight guide are great books for anyone travelling for real or if you want to travel by reading a book. You will not be disappointed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Pirate reality check.......2007-01-12

After my 3 year old got through the romantic and child presentations of pirates he really liked this book because he's in the "why" phase. This book explains a lot of practicalities of being a pirate in a way young kids can understand.

I bought this book for a homeschool unit study on Pirates and it is wonderful. The pictures are beautiful and the book itself is very informative. It does contain a lot of "new" vocabulary words, but the book also includes a glossary.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Pirate's Life for Me!: A Day Aboard a Pirate Ship.......2003-09-10

This book is so popular on the Seacoast of New Hampshire because, the real-life pirate of Brownie Macintoch, performer and songwriter, comes along with this book. He and Julie are a fixture of children's summer entertainment. (Check out www.juliebrownie.com)This book is a realistic portrait of a pirate without the details that are not necessary for young children. If this book interests a child, more books are available that have "those kinds" of details and others that are more gentle.

4 out of 5 stars It Could Be Better!!!.......2003-08-09

First off I want to say I loved the sea chanty tape. The book would have been better if it had a story line or gave more explanations. I've been reading about pirates for a few years, and I know some of the statements were wrong according to the books I've read. However the pictures are colorful and bright. And most young children would enjoy this simple book about pirates even though it's not quite cohesive or accurate. I will recommend this book for the younger children who are interested in piracy and need an introduction to history. A few months ago I read an excellent novel to my 5th grade granddaughter that was based on documentation and included photos. It was titled THE DIARY OF A SLAVE GIRL, RUBY JO and was about the week Blackbeard and his men on 4 ships held Charlestonians hostage to obtain medicine for his crews. That book had a good story, wonderful slave children characters, was funny, and entertaining! I recommend that one to anyone 10 and up.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pirate Book!.......2003-08-07

My 9 year old son (who loves pirate stories) and I enjoy this book so much. It offers a true depiction of pirate life with some graphic details that have made my son want to read other books containing pirate history and lore. I think the best children's books are the ones that make kids want to keep on reading and learning. I highly recommend this book.

                    Book Description

Nneka’s little brother Chidi is always saying that his favorite color is blue. When Nneka asks him why, he replies, “because the sky is blue and my best shirt is blue.” So Nneka decides to teach him about other colors seen in their village — red for the chiefs' caps, yellow for the gari they eat, brown for the okwe game board — and to tell him why she likes them. Ifeoma Onyefulu here introduces young readers to a rainbow palette, African style, with warm words and photographs offering a colorful glimpse of Nigerian village life.

My seven year old nephew and I read this book one rainy day and we both thought that it was great. The colors and the story were well thought out and we would like to find other books like it.
