Salton Sea.......2007-04-02
A beautiful, informative and spectacular oversized book on the Salton Sea. A place that needs to be saved and understood. This book will start your journey.
Excellent.......2003-10-01
--Just wanted to second the comments of the other reviewers regarding the quality and presentation of this book. It's a scientific work undertaken by the Salton Sea Database Program of the Redlands Institute of the University of Redlands, but it's enclosed within a lovely and large glossy coffee table book. It also includes much information about the cultural history of the Salton Sea and its region in a remote part of the southern California desert. I especially enjoyed the beautiful wildlife illustrations and biological information, though most of the book covers the physical science of the Salton Sea. I gave a copy to someone at a Christmas party held many miles away at the Orange County coast, and people literally were waiting and nagging for their turn to look through this beautiful book about this mysterious and controversial inland subtropical sea.
A Special Publication.......2002-11-15
This book is wonderful! I highly recommend it.
The Salton Sea Atlas covers the complex issues facing this very special body of water in a clear, yet comprehensive, fashion (use of graphics and illustrations over exhaustive use of text). It's a beautiful book, and the most wide-ranging piece about the Salton Sea that I've been able to find. You will not be disappointed with it.

An important guide about an invaluable resource.......2002-10-17
The Salton Sea Atlas explores issues and information regarding California's largest lake and most valuable environmental resource -- the Salton Sea.
This book is a must for those interested in the Salton Sea, environmental change, water issues in the American Southwest, history, or geography. Its graphical synthesis of complex social, scientific, and geographic information is superb and can be appreciated by all audiences. This is a wonderful publication.
I recommend it wholeheartedly

Walking and Eating in Tuscany and Umbria: Revised Edition (Walking and Eating in Tuscany and Umbria)
ASIN: 1860111009 |
Book Description
Vacationers have traveled to Tuscany and Umbria for centuries, and visitor figures continue to rise. In this newly revised edition of a Cadogan bestseller, Italy experts Facaros and Pauls uncover Tuscany's lavish natural beauty and some of the most enchanting landscapes in Europe. The three regions' combination of sheer beauty, wealth, and dastardly doings fired some of the greatest art and literature in the West, by the likes of Dante, Leonardo, Botticelli, and a hundred more. The guide discovers Tuscany, delving into the dense concentration of art that spills out of Florence into Pisa, Lucca, and Arezzo; absorbing the energy of Siena's frenzied Palio; and taking in the sumptuous vineyards of Chianti. It explores the medieval hill towns of green Umbria--historic Perugia over the Tiber Valley, the newly restored monuments and architecture of Assisi, and the famous cathedral of Orvieto. Finally, the unspoiled landscape of the civilized Marches is covered. The region is fast gaining popularity as an alternative to Tuscany and Umbria; unlike other guides, Cadogan explores its bustling, sparkly seaside resort of Rimini.
Cadogan not only brings this well-known and popular part of Italy to life, but also puts a new slant on the Leaning Tower and digs up some surprising secret gardens along the way.
This guide includes:
*Handpicked itineraries for the discerning nature-lover, art enthusiast, and wine-taster
*Special chapter on Florence, capital of Tuscany, with extensive listings and expert guidance through its many museums, churches, and galleries
*Menu reader, useful vocabulary, and comprehensive travel and practical advice to help visitors enjoy la dolce vita to the full
Customer Reviews:
this team is simply superb.......2004-05-08
We have used this book to explore the area just south of us for 4 solid years. Every time I open it, I am surprised and delighted at its depth, the authors' erudition, and the daring way in which they are often judgemental about what they observe. Of course, it has all the practical stuff as well, but it is the culture and history that makes this so great. Their eloquence surpasses the medium by several orders of magnitude.
Warmly recommended. These are the best travel writers in the business if you are looking for just that unusual perspective to add to your explorations. And you can read it again and again and see more.
thorough and beautifully written.......1999-03-02
I've been to Tuscany ten times over the past decade and have always used Cadogan, to my mind still the best out of the scores of other guides that have sprung up since, including the Rough Guide. They may not always get the phone numbers right, but the authors' make each corner of this beautiful region come alive with their knowledge and witty writing. The new 6th edition has a greatly expanded section on the Marches-a lovely region that no other book in English covers very well at all.
often outdated.......1999-02-04
When some years ago I was given by an American friend of mine a copy of this guide, I soon noticed that many information (e. g. telephone numbers of museums, names of bus companies) on the area in Tuscany where I live were outdated. So I wrote the authors a short letter with new numbers, names etc. Two weeks ago I saw the 6th ed. of the guide in a Florentine bookshop, but the wrong numbers, names etc. were always the same! They were not corrected!!! I wonder why!

Customer Reviews:
A well-rounded history!.......2006-07-06
Produced in association with The Jewish Museum, this book is an
overview of Jewish life in America from the earliest Colonial days to the present. Eighteen chapters follow Jewish-American history chronologically, with a few chapters zeroing in on topics of particular interest such as the life of Rebecca Gratz or Irving Berlin's army experiences. The large, square volume with its many color photographs has the feel of a coffee-table book, and its short tid-bits of information suit it to browsing more than to research purposes.
Photographs and art objects from The Jewish Museum are large, well-reproduced, and clearly captioned, and the pages are made attractive with color accents (there is hardly a white page in the whole book!).
This book was named a 2004 Notable Children's Book of Jewish Content by the Association of Jewish Libraries.
An audio interview with the author is available on The Book of Life podcast's July episode at www.jewishbooks.blogspot.com.
The young person's book for the 350th anniversary.......2004-12-20
Finally, there is a work for young people on the 350th anniversary of Jewish settlement in America that meets the high standards of adult books created for the 350th. Noted young adult book author Susan Goldman Rubin has written the junior version of American Judaism by Jonathan Sarna--the young person's book of the year for the 350th. L'Chaim achieves its purpose by focusing on individuals and families who have helped shape the American Jewish experience. Rubin is an award-winning writer who has written many biographies of creative people, so she is ideal to tell this story. The book is accompanied by extraordinary photographs of objects and images from the collection of the unsurpassed Jewish Museum in New York City.
What a wonderful book to read, to use as a reference, and to pass down to younger children and grandchildren in the future!

Conscice with Good Pictures.......2000-02-09
Although this book has extremely good photos and charts, its actual content is limited. Coverage of specific events and battles is conscice. This shortcoming is slightly made up for in the book's appendicies which include a nice atlas, portfolio projects, histrical documents, and glossary. However, I recomend this book only for a general review of world history. It is useful as a suplement to other world history texts.

Customer Reviews:
I actually enjoyed reading from a textbook!.......2004-12-03
As I sat in my Honors American History Class I pondered the assignment that was handed to me. Read a book that has to deal with American History in the 1990's. I tried to think of a book other than the Goosebumps or Babysitter's Club series since those were the only titles I had known that dealt with the 90's pop culture. I went to my teacher, Amy Person, and asked her about a book that she knew of concerning my assigned topic. She rummaged through her shelves and pulled a tiny, yet thick, textbook entitled The World Today: Current Problems and Their Origins. I had found my book, however in my head I thought to my self, "wow... this is a textbook... a three hundred and eight page text book." Well let's just say I didn't run home and start reading intensely. I read this book in sections. I would go to the back index and find topics that sparked my interest and read up on it. Surprisingly I learned a lot about the present day world and what had caused them (it's funny how textbooks teach you something... who would have thought.)
Like I said I skipped around from topic to topic. The first and most interesting topic (personally) dealt with Japan and it's Economy. I had gone to Japan on the student-exchange program at our school and saw how much Japan was booming. Flashing neon lights and humongous high-tech television screens lined the busy streets of Tokyo. I stayed in Tokyo with my grandfather, (after the other exchange students had left) who hadn't been to Japan in fifty years since he was stationed there after the war. He wanted to see how the Japanese cities looked to the ruins the war had left it in. So as I read the section on the Japanese economy I was in awe to think that Japan grew that much from a war-grieving and shambled country to a world dominating economic power. Japan exports a lot more goods than it imports. The two main exports are automobiles and electronics. However they import a lot more agricultural goods due to the lack of land area (which is a little over the size of California). In the 90's Japan's economy faltered a little bit which caused a shock wave in the political government. The dominating LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) lost the majority in the lower house in 1993 for the first time in thirty-eight years. It gained the house back in 1996 however, but the economy still struggled and is still having a few problems even today.
I learned a lot on an array of different topics. From Osama Bin Laden to illegal aliens entering the United States this book almost forced me to learn about the current topics of today. I wouldn't suggest this book to a student younger than a freshman in high school but anyone older than that would definitely benefit from the knowledge it provides. Not many Americans know why the issues of today came about or what fueled and sparked them. Even my parents learned something new after their forty-three years of being born an American citizen. I think that if people were to learn more about their history, even a little bit, people would understand issues more clearly and not make ignorant statements concerning them. This book can help with that. The illustrations create a fun message that lets your mind have a quick break from learning. Even the language Henry Brun uses is very easy to read and doesn't sound too intellectual. That's why people could benefit from reading this. It is easy to read and it enriches your mind.
However if you are looking for something with multiple characters and a plot line this book isn't for you. Yes it is true you would benefit from reading it. It is a textbook... that is its job. This isn't the kind of book you can sit down and read chapter to chapter nonstop. You have to read it a little bit at a time not cramming too much information in all at one time. It just wouldn't benefit you that way. My history teacher would disagree, but I think the rest of the non-history buff world would just have a learning overload.
Overall The World Today: Current Problems and Their Origins taught me a ton. It took me a while to figure out the right approach the book from a strict fiction reader's mind, but once I got the hang of it I ate it up. Finding out what fueled and ignited major issues today really sparked my interest (no pun intended). Call me crazy but I actually enjoyed reading a textbook.
