            Book Description

Contributions to the workshop on Ordination Methods in Entomological Systematics, along with ordination-based research presented at the congress symposium on The Structural Basis and Analysis of Allometric Growth in Insects, formed the initial basis for this volume. Taking those sessions even further, this book portrays many current, distinct aspects of ordination analyses that have never been covered, as well as conveying a wealth of possibilities for the biological and evolutionary interpretations that these techniques allow. Several of the aspects here are still evolving in theory and implementation, hence the text incorporates disagreement and varied usage to enable the reader to see and understand the philosophies and arguments involved.

The aim of this volume is to provide insights and inspirations for those already experienced in morphometric research, and also to provide examples for inexperienced workers. Examples and arguments for r

                  Description:
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) have been a major environmental issue, drawing much scientific and public attention due to their bioaccumulation potential, persistence and toxicity. Soil samples from three villages around the Guanting Reservoir, one of Beijing's five major water systems located to the northwest of the city, were collected in 2003 and analyzed to determine DDT and HCH-concentrations. The samples were also analyzed for soil texture, pH, and concentrations of total carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus to investigate their possible relationship to current OCP-concentrations. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) were used to study the distribution and contamination levels of OCPs within the study area. Classification splits were made to divide the 30 samples into three groups. The first group contained samples in soils from village C; the second group contained all of the samples in village B and most of the samples in village A; and the third group contained just three samples from village A, and the three samples had a relatively high concentration of OCPs. Ordination plots of the first two axes from PCA (cumulative percentage 80.91%) were constructed to explore the HCH and DDT-distribution patterns as well as the degradation ratios between the parent substances and their isomers.

                    Description:
Local communities use an indigenous classification of environmental land units for natural resource management in central north Namibia. These indigenous land units (ILUs) were compared with a conventional vegetation analysis to improve understanding by scientists. The indigenous classification is based on many criteria. Detrended correspondence analysis was carried out on 388 vegetation samples, collected in a participatory way. The ordination diagrams of species and samples were a good reflection of ecological variation in the area. The data were used to draw sample standard deviation ellipses around the average ILU score. Classes with highly ranked vegetation criteria had little overlap with each other, while classes with no vegetation criteria often had large overlaps with other land classes. Advantages and disadvantages of working with indigenous environmental knowledge are discussed.

                      Description:
Vertical structure in plant communities is well recognized, but questions remain about the response of different stratal layers in a plant community to resource use. This study provides a quantitative approach to compare the relationships of nine edaphic factors and species distributions in shrub and herb layers, respectively, in an arid valley of the upper Minjiang River, Sichuan Province, China. Classification (TWINSPAN) determined three groups of shrubs and four groups of herbs. Ordination (both DCA and DCCA) found a correlation among species and edaphic variables. Borcard's method [Borcard, D., Legendre, P., Drapeau, P., 1992. Partialling out the spatial component of ecological variation. Ecology 73, 1045-1055.] was employed to partition the variation of species abundance data into independent components: pure spatial, pure environmental, spatial component of environmental influence, and undetermined. Based on those four components, a quantitative comparison of ecological variation between shrubs and herbs further eluidated their different response to the environment. Although soil moisture (SM) content, pH, soil organic matter (OC) and available potassium (AK) were the most important factors to both, the explained ecological variation of herbs was lower than that of shrubs. Understanding differences between stratal layers in resource use can shed light on plant-environment relationships.

                        Description:
The objective of this research was to study the relationships between environmental factors and vegetation in order to find the most effective factors in the separation of the vegetation types in Poshtkou rangelands of Yazd province. Sampling of soil and vegetation were performed with randomized-systematic method. Vegetation data including density and cover percentage were estimated quantitatively within each quadrat, and using the two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), and vegetation was classified into different groups. The topographic conditions were recorded in quadrat locations. Soil samples were taken in 0-30 and 30-60cm depths in each quadrat. The measured soil variables included texture, lime, saturation moisture, gypsum, acidity (pH), electrical conductivity, sodium absorption ratio, and soluble ions (Na^+, K^+, Mg^2^+, Cl^-, CO"3^2^-, HCO"3^- and SO"4^2^-). Multivariate techniques including principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to analyse the collected data. The results showed that the vegetation distribution pattern was mainly related to soil characteristics such as salinity, texture, soluble potassium, gypsum, and lime. Totally, considering the habitat conditions, ecological needs and tolerance range each plant species has a significant relation with soil properties.

                          Description:
The aim of this study was to provide an analysis of vegetation and environment relationships in the Alxa Plateau of Inner Mongolia, China. Seventy species representing 46 genera and 16 families were collected. The largest families were Leguminosae, Polygonaceae, Gramineae and Compositae, representing 20.0%, 15.7%, 14.3% and 14.3% of the total flora, respectively. Phanerophytes and hemicryptophytes were the most abundant life-form. Classification of the vegetation was analysed using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) techniques. This resulted in the recognition of six vegetation groups, each of definite vegetation and soil characteristics, which could be linked to a specific geomorphologic unit. Ordination techniques as detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used to examine the relationship between the vegetation and environmental parameters. Analysis with DCA gave results similar to CCA, suggesting that there is a relatively strong correspondence between vegetation and environmental factors. CCA axis 1 was highly associated with organic matter, total nitrogen, silt and clay content, elevation, Kira moisture index and relative humidity, while CCA axis 2 showed significant correlation with chlorine, calcium ion, magnesium ion and electrolytic conductivity. These gradients were related closely to the first two canonical axes, and accounted for 60% of the species-environment relationship in the study sites. Understanding relationships between environmental variables and vegetation distribution in this area helps us to apply these findings in management, reclamation, and development of arid and semi-arid grassland ecosystems.

This book killed all of our excitement about coming home and offers no usefool tools or resources. The author states the obvious and basically drones on on an about how horrible it is to come home. If you want to be depressed then buy this book. Poor writting, no content, and not as exciting and essential as it claims to be. It's a big NO NO!

                          4 out of 5 stars much appreciated.......2006-07-26

Craig Storti has made an important contribution to both people going to work in another culture and those returning to their home culture.

                          4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2003-03-06

If you spent months in Paraguay or Latvia longing for modern supermarkets, octo-plex movie theaters and mega-malls, coming home will surprise you. All that consumerism, all those different breakfast cereals, all that plenty and pizzazz may not play as well with you as you had remembered. Never mind. Eventually youýll again expect to be offered 15 different kinds of herbal tea with your $18 lunch, but when you first return and the deprivations of your overseas station are still fresh, reentry can include a big shot of culture shock. Companies pay plenty of attention to executives and workers who need help and advice when theyýre given an overseas assignment. But Craig Storti thought it was time to address the needs of those same expats when they return and face the challenge of readjustment. He does so expertly in this practical guide, which includes hard logistics and some soft psychology. We from getAbstract highly recommend this book to homecoming expats and to those who play crucial roles in managing their reentries.

                          3 out of 5 stars A decent resource..........2000-08-06

Of no surprise to anyone who has lived overseas and then attempted a successful 're-entry', coming home is tremendously more stressful and difficult than leaving home. Storti directs a company that designs and delivers seminars in cross-cultural adjustment, repatriation and multicultural diversity. Most striking about this book was how complex the issues are surrounding the re-entry of a family or person into a society and culture that no longer feels like his/her own. One of the most remarkable results of living overseas is that you come to understand your own culture much better and more clearly then those at home who are 'in' it. We experience this when we come home even for brief periods - the US is so enveloped in its high-consumerism that an outsider has difficulty finding value in the every day. While Americans have learned to absorb the 1000 cable channels, and 800 varieties of dog foods in the supermarket aisles, expatriates find it highly stressful to come back to a country where abundance, waste, and intense material comforts are the norm (after they've lived in places where all of these things are harder to find and they've adjusted thusly). Storti is also careful to speak to the frustrations that the homebound friends and family experience when their loved ones decend upon them after what they see as tremendous opportunities for cultural and personal growth. I found this book a very good resource and will likely pick it up again every time I am heading home - for a new series of stresses - to help remember why these stresses exist and how to soften them.

5 out of 5 stars Rings true to my repatriation experience.......2000-06-20

This book captured and helped make sense of the unsettling experiences my wife and I had in returning to the US after four years living and working in England. I think the best time to read it might be before you leave, but I only found it after returning (and hearing the author speak to a group of repatriates).

The book includes good practical insights and suggestions for employees, employers and co-workers, spouses, families, and teens/kids experiencing what the book calls "reverse culture shock."

                            Book Description

The no-holds-barred memoir from the beloved music superstar.

From the heart of one of the most beloved performers in music comes a candid memoir of professional triumph, private heartbreak, and personal victory-a coming-of-age account of a very private search for harmony and a very public rise to fame.

Coming Home to Myself is the result of that emotional journey-a song of personal discovery that taught Wynonna Judd to love not just what she does, but who she is. From a truly exceptional woman comes an unexpected memoir of survival, strength, hope, and forgiveness, filled with an exultant and empowering message certain to resonate with those who have dreamed of finding themselves, and who only needed the courage and inspiration to begin their own journey.

I haven been following most of Wynonna's carrer. I was VERY Thrilled to find out she wrote her book, on Coming Home To Myself! I bought it and know that it hasn't been a easy road to get where she is. There is many paralls to her life and mine. Many ways the path I chosen to have creative life and help others hsn't been easy--too many barriers but I'm a fighter like these JUDD women!

I like learning the lessons and challenges she has managed to overcome so far in her life. I can relate to her in many ways, because i know what it like to have a disabitity and diffuly realating to her mom sometimes. My mother is differnt than me in many ways and sometimes i forget now and then.

I also can relate to her from my Disabity Hearing promblem and cerbal plasy and i know people who have ADD. I find them intersting. She is one of many ladies I look up to for moviation and insperation throught tough times! I have created a character based on her.

I LOVE her vioce and songs that sings on life-- tough times and uplifing times. I am a Creative Spirit who like to do many creative projects and sometimes I don't know where to begin!!!! I can't wait to read her next book!!!! 4 out of 5 stars Coming Home to Myself (Wynonna Judd) Book on CD.......2007-02-07

I listened to this book that is on several CDs. I listened in my car and enjoyed it very much. (We envy so many people before we know what is actually going on in their lives... Wynonna has been through so much. I hope it will be smooth sailing for her from here on out. I sure would never want to trade places with her). I enjoyed this book on CD and I learned a LOT from it as well. However it does get a tad slow in places so be prepared.

4 out of 5 stars Came home to myself too!.......2007-02-01

We have alot in common when it comes to our mothers and it was an easy read, refreshing story. I've watched Wynonna grow up and always wondering "there's something not quite right there." When you learn about that her life was not all sunshine and roses growing up or after her fame it will make you love her and the voice even more! It made me look at my own relationship with my mother and realize I'm not the only one which felt pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars A gripping saga any Judd fan must have........2007-01-07

Any fan of country music is already familiar with the name of star Wynonna Judd, so her memoir of professional and private life holds a ready-made audience from the start. Such an audience will find COMING HOME TO MYSELF: A MEMOIR holds plenty of personal reflection as well as autobiographical history: Judd is committed to tracing the emotional journey which accompanied her rise to stardom, and here follows a stormy relationship with her performer mother, her decade of being a superstar, and her mother's dangerous illness. A gripping saga any Judd fan must have.

I was given this book by someone who knows of the struggles I have had in my own life. Both of us thought this would be a great read for me. I know little about the Judds, their music or their lives. I appreciated the insight into how her career got started. I truly enjoyed those first chapters. At the halfway mark I was bored to tears. Shortly after, I could not find any reason to go on reading. I still don't know what she was so pained over. That being said, I hope whatever her struggles are, that they have passed. I saw her perform on TV at the end of 2006 and she and her song were beautiful. Buy the music, not the book.

                            Book Description

In the works of many famous self-taught artists, such as Howard Finster and Sister Gertrude Morgan, Biblical themes and imagery abound. How has the Bible inspired these Southern creators?

Examining 125 works of art by more than seventy contemporary folk artists, Coming Home! Self-Taught Artists, the Bible, and the American South accompanies a traveling exhibition organized by the Art Museum of the University of Memphis. The exhibition features painters and sculptors of wide acclaim, including Finster, Sister Morgan, William Edmondson, Clementine Hunter, Joe Minter Elijah Pierce, Robert Roberg, William Thomas Thompson, and Myrtice West.

In the South, Evangelical Christianity is predominant. Essays in this catalog explore this particular religious influence on the work of Southern self-taught artists. The artwork is considered within the context of contemporary American art and history, literature, and music. Also included are brief essays on thirty-two of the artists along with biographical sketches of each, identifying denominational ties and providing relevant religious information.

Coming Home! offers new ways of understanding the rich meaning, theology, and history of this art and its stylistic approaches and various purposes. Essayists also forward a fresh appreciation of the cultural influence of Evangelical Christianity. They include Carol Crown, Erika Doss, Hal Fulmer, Norman Girardot, Paul Harvey, Babatunde Lawal, Leslie Luebbers, Cheryl Rivers, and Charles Reagan Wilson.

The only thing better than reading the essays and seeing the full-color plates was to have been to the exhibit in person. The art is fascinating. The exploration of these artist's intentions and influences is inspiring. This is a first-rate publication that accompanied a first-rate exhibition.

D Foster showed up a few months before Tupac got shot that first time and left us the summer before he died.

The day D Foster enters Neeka and her best friendÂ's lives, the world opens up for them. D comes from a world vastly different from their safe Queens neighborhood, and through her, the girls see another side of life that includes loss, foster families and an amount of freedom that makes the girls envious. Although all of them are crazy about Tupac ShakurÂ's rap music, D is the one who truly understands the place where heÂ's coming from, and through knowing D, TupacÂ's lyrics become more personal for all of them.

The girls are thirteen when DÂ's mom swoops in to reclaim D—and as magically as she appeared, she now disappears from their lives. Tupac is gone, too, after another shooting; this time fatal. As the narrator looks back, she sees lives suspended in time, and realizes that even all-too-brief connections can touch deeply.

David Cope's fourth collection, Coming Home, binds together the two major strands of his life and art. In poem after poem, Cope is by turn the clear-eyed strider of our broken cities, or the profoundly lyrical explorer of nature, of redemptive human intimacy in all its silence and nakedness. And often there is an extraordinary synthesis, as in:
                                  The Abandoned City
if we sit long enough, will our love grow wise?
the roman mottos tumble from facades & crash.
where statesmen argued the language of law,
cedars split paving stones & broken pillars crumble.
atop the giant boulder, a maple's single thick root
grips granite all the way to soil below, where
we stand amazed. lovers go to sing their love
hand in hand, passing a drunken cursing hulk
who pitches headlong toward a red-faced hooker-
she shrieks, pushing trash cans in his path,
her mouth a red circle of moaning terror.
O air pregnant with mouths opening like new petals,
O silence humming with coos & shrieks,
O rays revving cells in a single juniper needle!

This is a beautiful, large-ish, soft-cover book. I ordered it online and was surpised at it's oversize (sorry...no ruler handy for that info). It's an acceptable size for display and browse, even though I bought it thinking it would be more in-depth and textbook sized.

The choice of realist artists was diverse yet kept to a very American mid-century view. I particularly found the African-American imagery compelling. These are the children of the Ashcan school artists, and some of the works (and accompanying short-page, but concise explanations)are generally unknown. Many are of stiking social commentary.

If you are ready to go beyond Edward Hopper for mid-century American Realism you will greatly enjoy this book. It's really lovely and has drawn some comment and interest even with some teens who paged through it.

                                      Book Description

The story resumes at a high pace in the third and final volume of Alastair Campbell's acclaimed account of the Campbell clan. Successive incidents include the ninth Earl's part in the 1685 Rebellion and his eventual execution; the tenth earl's rise to dukedom; the massacre of Glencoe; the second duke's quashing of the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion at Sheriffmuir; the notable part played by the clan in the 1745 rebellion and the Appin Murder in its aftermath.

The old clan system came to an end following the defeat of the Jacobite armies at Culloden in 1746. Succeeding chapters describe the break-up of the old order and the diaspora. From its founding to the war in Iraq, Campbell elucidates the details of the chiefly family and an account of the position of the clan in the British Army. It is extraordinary to see how firmly, widely and in what a variety of ways the Campbells have left their imprint.

Appendices cover the heraldic history of Clan Campbell and the titles it has gained.

The book is illustrated with maps expertly drawn by Kenneth Campbell and twenty pages of plates, four of them in colour. It includes appendices covering the Clan's heraldic history and the titles it has gained over the centuries, and ends with a full bibliography and comprehensive index.

Alistair Campbell's trilogy ranges over the histories of the west highlands, Scotland, and the Scots overseas, in which Clan Campbell played a notable and decisive part. In a well-paced narrative, his writing has combined depth and readability. He has made a significant contribution to the history of Scotland by recording the history of a remarkable family.
