Book Description

This is the first comprehensive illustrated guide to the trees, ferns, and flowering plants of the Tahoe Basin. Covering more than 600 species, many of them rare, and with over 300 color photographs, here is the most complete and up-to-date wildflower guide available for this floristically rich region.
Michael Graf discusses native higher vascular plants: flowering plants, ferns and their allies, and conifers. He covers the Tahoe region from Desolation Wilderness in the west to the Carson Range in the east and includes Donner Lake and Pass, Sagehen Meadows, Castle Peak, Pole Creek, Shirley Canyon, Granite Chief, and Alpine Meadows in the north; and Hope Valley and Carson and Luther Passes in the south. Each of these areas represents extensions of Tahoe Basin plant communities, and the entire region offers spectacular wildflower viewing.
The book is arranged taxonomically, thereby helping readers to develop a basic understanding of plant families, genera, and species. Each species account includes size, bloom period, and preferred habitat, and a full description follows, including clues for identification, notes on where to view the plant, use by humans, and additional ecological information. An introductory section discusses the evolutionary principles of plant taxonomy and the geologic and climatic history of the Tahoe Basin, its vegetative ecology, and its environmental history from the time of the Washoe Indians to the present.
An appendix provides a family key, a glossary, and drawings of plant anatomy. Throughout the book, taxonomic information is based on the 1993 edition of the Jepson Manual. With its clear descriptions, beautiful photographs, and information on everything from pollination to conservation, this book should be in the backpack of anyone who loves wildflowers, from amateur to professional field biologist.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars very useful and beautiful.......2001-12-21

WHile there are a number of flower books for the Sierra available, I found this one particularly useful because the plants are arranged by family so you can learn how to identify plants that are not in the range covered by the book. THe introductory section was also really informative and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book full of wonder.......2001-05-05

Weekends in Tahoe are tons better with this book in tow. It is way cool to know the names of the gorgy plants and flowers with whom you are sharing your away-from-work time. I especially like being able to answer my two-year-old's question, "What's dat one momma," as he begins to take an interest in the names of the plant life surrounding him. A great gift for parents of children who go to Tahoe from time to time...or for anyone still young at heart/inquisitive enough to want to know more about Tahoe vegetation.

5 out of 5 stars Plants of the Tahoe Basin: flowering plants, trees and ferns.......2000-04-24

Without a doubt, this is the best plant or flower book I have ever read. The author clearly knows Tahoe Basin vegetation and natural history like nobody else. The key is masterful in its simplicity, the pictures spectacular and the text brilliantly concise (and sometimes witty!). You can leave your tent, cell phone and coffee mug behind, but you must not forget Mr. Graf's book when going to Tahoe.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Very useful........1999-08-10

I just took this book with me on a trip in the Sierra and found it very useful, informative, easy to use, and complete. The 60 page introductory section, which covers the natural history of the area and plant taxonomy, was very interesting and informative. The photographs are beautiful as well.

4 out of 5 stars A compact guidebook for the "walking tour" crowd.......1997-05-19

Excellent maps, a compact format, and a reasonable price make this book handy for the tourist without a lot of time or money to spend in Venice. It's organized as a series of walking tours, with detailed descriptions of sights and landmarks along the way. (If you dislike having itineraries laid out for you, Michelin's Green Guide to Venice, ISBN 2061587011, may be a better choice.)

It is simply amazing and just fantastic! I definitely did not expect it to be this great but it was!! Buy with confidence- you are going to love this book!!I've read it at least eight times! The sequel to All-American Girl; you will not be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as the first one.......2007-03-25

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said plenty by other people, but I'll contribute:

The last book had a plot about how Samantha Madison saved the life of the president of the Unites States.
This book is has a plot about how the same(?) Samantha Madison may or may not be ready to play "Parcheesi" with her boyfriend.

What with the Princess Diaries series lately, I'm beginning to think that Meg Cabot might have a problem. It's one thing to include it in her books--it is, after all, a normal issue teens face growing up--it's another thing to create whole plots about nothing but this subject. And what really killed me was that, just when you thought she'd stay true to herself by sticking with her desicion to say "no" she goes ahead and does it.

The thing is, in this book, Sam is no longer somebody you can really identify with. She's like a whole 'nother person in this book. Stick with the first one, and decide for yourself what happens in Sam's junior year.

1 out of 5 stars Why Meg Cabot Isn't Ready... (contains spoilers, guys!).......2007-03-24

I am so glad I borrowed this book from the library instead of shelling out my precious dollars for it. What was wrong? Glad you asked.
Reasons Cabot was NOT ready (and should have spent a LOT more time writing):
                        10) Sam thinks her life stinks again. Really. I thought we had fixed that in the last book.
                        9) No character development. We get nifty new characters, or they could be nifty. We don't know. She didn't tell us!
                        8) 250 pages of: Should I have sex or not? Gets really boring really fast.
                        7) View of sex is one-sided. Sex changes nothing. As long as you use birth control it's okay. All for readers who haven't hit the legal age of consent (remember, it's aimed at 14/15 year olds, too).
                        6) The faucet discussion. (Those of you who've read it know what I'm talking about; those of you who haven't: be grateful!)
                        5) A cafeteria full of teens screaming "I'm a slut!" Not real. Wouldn't happen. In any high school. Ever.
                        4) A girl who wasn't ready for sex decides she's ready. On a whim. Spur of the moment. Without any explanation why. Yep.
                        3) Completely slams our current administration. Again- yep. Are high schoolers even that political?
                        2) Sam stresses over what people think about her. For pages. Not even the same girl from the last book.
And the number one reason why Meg Cabot isn't ready:
                        1) Three words: Sex and Naked Men. That's the heart of this novel.

Do yourself a favor and don't ruin your love for Sam. Stick to the first book. If you must read about sexuality among teens, check out the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It's handled MUCH better there and it's not the WHOLE PLOT!

1 out of 5 stars Appalling American Girl.......2007-02-25

Reader beware! In spite of what the front flap indicates, this book is primarily about a teenage girl obsessing about having sex with her boyfriend. How irresponsible of the author and publisher to call this All American Girl! I picked up a copy of this as an audio book, thinking that it would be a fun book to listen to with my early teenage kids. I figured that if she wrote the books used as the inspiration for the movie Princess Diaries, it would probably be OK. The audiobook back cover even recommended it for ages 12 to something. I'm glad I listened to it first! The impression the front flap of the book gives is that having sex with her boyfriend is only one of a list of 10 things she is not ready for(and not even #1), but this is quite misleading. By the end of the book, she decides she's ready for a whole lot more than she thought she was at the beginning. Apparently the author and publisher think masturbation and teenage sex (though not graphic) and how much fun those activities are is acceptable reading for young teenagers. A word I would not be allowed to use in this review is printed over and over in this book and used as sort of a rallying cry toward the end. The author appears to be trying to make a political and amoral point with this story. There seem to be no lasting consequences for the main character as a result of her decisions, either. In fact, she ends up as rather a hero. The only redeeming feature I could find in the whole book was a developing relationship between two other characters, who learn not to judge each other based on appearances. I will not be buying any other books from this author!

In my opinion, Meg Cabot is a good author.
No, NOT because they teach you something important. (Not that there is no moral behind any of her books, it's just mainly stuff YOU already know. But maybe you need a reminder?)
No, NOT because they raise mind-boggling questions and make you look at your life and the people around you from a different perspective.

                        No-sir-ee.

I think Meg Cabot is a good author because although she's an adult, her books truly sound like they're coming from the average teenager's perspective.
I've seen the Princess Diaries, I've read All-American Girl & Teen Idol, and it's almost hard to believe that it's fiction.
The plotlines themselves aren't exactly beliveable (Girl saves president. Girl becomes popular, thought she doesn't really care about that. All she cares about it guy. She forgets guy. She gets with another guy. Everyone lives happily ever-after.), the characters certainly are. Really.
Even if you're not in high school (I'm certainly not), you either know the character, or you are the character. Ironic, no?

Yes. I could just go on and on about All-American Girl & Teen Idol and how honest the story is, how perfectly it captures teenagers, and how clever it is.

...but, sadly, I can't do that. Or at least, I shouldn't.

Why? Cuz'. This is "Ready or Not."

                        NOT Teen Idol.

And NOT All-American Girl. No. This certainly is no All-American Girl.

Like I said, what amazes me about Meg Cabot's books is how 'real' everything is; She captures teeangers perfectly.

I really liked Samantha in All-American Girl, and I was looking forward to getting to travel inside her head again in Ready Or Not.

Sadly, the Samantha in Ready or Not is not the type of character whose head you'd want to be in, considering the fact she is suddenly faced with an alarming amount of sexual situations at once, and that irks me.

No, NOT because I am a prudish little kid who can't handle the mention of sex, but because All-American Girl was, in a word, clean.

Was All-American girl the most squeaky-clean book in the history of books? No. There was snubbing, teen partying (achohol, kissing, the works), and just plain teenagers.

But the thing is, in Ready or Not everything is suddenly all about sex, when the last novel didn't really go into sex at all. Samantha seemed to have no interest in sex whatsoever last time, and now, taking place only a year after All-American Girl, Samantha spends the ENTIRE novel talking about sex, or thinking about sex, or feeling embarassed about sex, or wondering what it would be like to have sex, or wheather she should have sex, or...well...you get the point. She's a real sex-maniac.

But wait! It isn't HER falt she's becoming some creepy cross between a worried pervert and a whiny slut! If you want to be techincal about it, it's all Meg Cabots falt for introducing so much sex into the book when Samantha clearly has no expierience with it at all.

The art teacher wants her to stare at naked men, then draw them. The boyfriend hints at sex, which makes her go crazy, the friend has suddenly become interested in sex (And, once again, this is the SAME friend from All-American Girl, who showed no interest in sex in that one), the president wants to discuss sex, her eleven-year-old sister aparently watches TV shows that have to do with sex...sex, sex, sex and more sex.

This book is, after all, Young Adult. If the author wants to delve into more mature topics, then fine. That's one thing. But to make every single frickin' character interested in sex and have the just about the entire novel based on that is quite another. Even diehard fans of All-American Girl might want to stay away.

The teenage perspective? Fine. Samantha's perspective? Not so fine. It's been a year since the last novel, which had almost no sexual content, and this entire book centers around weather or not she's ready to have sex OMG! THE TITLE HAS A MEANING!) with some boy who hardly appears in the book, even though he was something of a main character last time. How old is she? Around seventeen.

Moral of the story: Seventeen is a scary age, where you will suddenly cross a magical bridge into sex-land.

Boy am I glad I won't be seventeen for a while!

                        10. Spending Thanksgiving at Camp David

                        9. With her boyfriend, the president's son

                        8. Who wants to take things to the Next Level

                        6. While discussing the president's dubious policies on families, morals, and, yes, sex

                        5. Juggling her new after-school job at Potomac Video

                        4. Even though she's already the (unpaid) teen ambassador for the UN

                        3. Getting accosted because she's "the redheaded girl who saved the president's life," despite her new ebony tresses

                        2. Dealing with her popular sister Lucy, who for once can't get the guy she wants

and the number-one thing Sam isn't ready for?

                        1. Finding out the hard way that in art class, "life drawing" means "naked people."

Is this book controversial? You bet! Is it funny? No doubt about it. Is it appropriate reading material for all ages? Depends on what you deem appropriate.

I've read with interest other reviews for READY OR NOT, Meg Cabot's sequel to All-American Girl. I even agree with a lot of them. But before I start my review, let me remind you of one salient point--this book is a work of FICTION. It was written by a HUMAN who has her OWN views of life.

Just as everyone isn't going to agree on whether or not abortion is right, or the war in Iraq is necessary, or whether religion should be allowed in public schools, no two people are going to agree on whether or not Sam should have sex with her boyfriend at the age of almost seventeen.

That said, I loved the book. I'm a thirty-year-old happily married mother of two, and I still enjoyed Ms. Cabot's individual brand of humor, the trials of being a teenager, and the ability of one person to make a difference in the world.

The Samantha Madison of All-American Girl has grown up. She's older, she's dyed her hair because she "needed a change," and she's wondering what to do now that her boyfriend, David, who just happens to be the son of the US President, has invited her to Camp David over Thanksgiving weekend to play "parcheesi."

Sam is all ready reeling--from the realization that she either looks like a cute Ashlee Simpson (her older sister Lucy's comment on the dye job, which is not good) or a dead Joan of Arc (her younger sister Rebecca's comment on the hair, which could be good depending on how you look at it); the fact that "life studies" in art class obviously means "naked people" (really not good that the first naked man you see is a complete stranger); and the knowledge that the President seems to think providing the teens of America birth-control should not be done without their parents approval.

I truly enjoyed READY OR NOT. The message is a powerful one--the sexuality of a person should be based on their maturity, not their age, and that birth-control is a personal decision of the person engaging in sexual activities. That said, however, never once does the book become preachy about teen sexuality. I can understand where some parents might not like having their teenage daughters reading about a sixteen-year old who decides to have sex with her boyfriend, but I personally would rather have my daughter read a book about a girl who knows what a big decision it is, comes to peace with it in her mind, and seeks out ways to avoid the dangers that are associated with sex no matter what your age--pregnancy and disease--then have her feel ashamed to research her decision.

I think the subject matter was wonderfully handled, and by no means is the entire book about Sam trying to decide whether or not to have sex with David. A lot of reviewers will attempt to make it be so, just because the subject matter is a touchy one. But it's also about Sam wanting to be her own person, not just "the girl who saved the President." It's about learning to love yourself as you are, and understanding the intricacies of your family, and taking important steps in your life to make the world a better place.

Samantha Madison grew up in this book, and that's how it should be. Any parent who thinks their teenager isn't thinking about sex is sadly mistaken--it's just a fact of life. And Meg Cabot presents a wonderful story about the highs and lows of falling in love, of making life-altering decisions, and being the best person you can be.
