1 out of 5 stars Poor Editing.......2007-06-15

It is time for Ted Andrews to take his share of responsibility for the poor quality of book produced by Dragonhawk Publishing (which I suspect is his own label). This book is so poorly edited that information at times becomes incomprehensible and/or inaccurate. His Animal Wise Tarot suffered from the same problem. This is an insult to readers. I respect the author's knowledge but will never buy another copy of any book he publishes under Dragonhawk; readers work hard for their money and deserve more respect than what Mr. Andrews is showing. How spiritually correct is that?

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book!.......2007-05-09

This book has alot of very useful information. I'm sure I will be using it as a reference book for a long while.

4 out of 5 stars A great work.......2007-04-15

I really really liked this book. It was relatively aimed at Wiccans and Pagans, but it had very nice information, both of a spiritual nature, and scientifically so, about all sorts of herbs, flowers, and trees. Some of the exercises seemed a little weird to me, but to each his own- someone might really benefit from these. I see the outdoors as an even more beautiful place after reading this book. Its definately worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Spiritual in Everyday Life.......2007-01-03

After reading this book, you will not look at the world the same. Andrews points out simple ways to find the Divine in the everyday. A simple walk outside in your yard can be an act of worship!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could ask about Nature's symbolism (to you).......2006-02-27

I was on vacation in NW Canada Rockies area and discovered this book in a little shop, and I couldn't leave the country without it (just in case I couldn't find it quick enough in the US). It's beyond "plants" you ID with. There's ceremonies (like making a staff -- or celebrating Solstice etc), a dictionary of landscapes (why are you drawn to oceans), magical rhythms (like seasons, angels, etc) ... even the meaning of numbers in nature (why did you plant two birches?) And of course the expected definition of plants, trees, flowers, etc. (Marigold: "keynote: words have healing power; sacrifice out of love if necessary." "It is a flower of love and sacrifice")

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not what I ecpected.......2006-11-11

Accourding to the reviews this is an excellent book, which I agree with. It is beautifull in illustration and story. But if you are christian this book is not for you. It glorifies the Indian beliefs, which is fine, but not for our family. So I had to make a trip to the postoffice to return it. None of the other reviews mention this, they just note that it is a very thankfull book. If you worship nature this is for you, if you worship Jesus this is not.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2005-11-11

This is a simple book to read through for younger children. Written by native Americans it is a "thanksgiving" book from their point of view, why native americans have always celebrated thanksgiving. It has no mention of pilgrams or not fully proven, overly romanticized stories as most thanksgivings are but simply a beautiful description of the season, the great harvest and respect for the world around them. A book of why the Native Americans Gave thanks during this beautiful season.

5 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful book........2004-07-10

A simple but truly beautiful and wonderful book. To read with your children every morning and express thanks to the world, promoting connectedness and deep respect of all things. Teaching our children these important words will doubtlessly take us through these rough times and make the world as beautiful and peaceful as it was intended to be.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Way to Teach Gratitude.......2001-08-23

Anyone looking to teach the concept of Gratitude to children need look no further. "Giving Thanks" is the answer. The words, culled from the Thanksgiving Address (an ancient Iroquois message of gratitude still used today) simply, directly and eloquently give a roll-call of thanks from the Earth to the Sun and everything in-between. They evoke warm, inviting, even mythic images that I believe will delight most children. A personal, friendly face is put upon the elements that are usually looked at through the cold, impersonal microscope of science. The sun, moon, thunder and lightning, and even dead ancestors are transformed into Brother Sun, Grandmother Moon, Grandfather Thunder Beings and the Spirit Protectors, respectively.

The world is simply and beautifully explained not as a big, scary one, but a warm, familiar one in twenty short pages. Even children too young to read will benefit thanks to the bright, colorful painting-like artwork by Irwin Printup, Jr. Every page brilliantly shines with the face of Grandmother Moon and the haunting reassurance of the Spirit Protectors. Its a great gift for classrooms, birthdays, holidays or just to to teach this valuable virtue. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This book is AWESOME!.......1999-11-10

I was blown away by this book and was proud to add it to my bookshelf. I am glad that publishers are letting REAL Native American writers and artists tell our own stories our own way. The Thanksgiving Address is a central component of Mohawk culture and I was proud to see this in the hands of my children. This and SKYWOMAN by Joanne Shenandoah, Douglas George, John Fadden and Dave Fadden have set a new standard in the publishing of Native American culture and art. Now, if only some publisher would accept the challenge to do the same with Native American history...(hint hint!)

What have we learned since 1951, when Rachel Carson's charming The Sea Around Us was published, winning so many hearts and the National Book Award? The sea below us, as pioneering marine biologist Sylvia Earle and others have demonstrated, churns with far more life than Carson ever dreamed. Sea Change is an enthusiastic celebration of that diversity and abundance. It's also a profoundly sobering account of the shortsighted human assault on ocean life. The "silent tide," as one reviewer wrote, may lie just offshore. Only a sea change in human habits and economies will save the oceans.

Like Carson, Earle carved a place for herself in the public imagination despite resistance from those in her male-dominated field. Her tales of underwater adventure--including many record-breaking dives among the 6,000 hours she has spent underwater--are punctuated by stories about her increasing prominence as an advocate for the oceans. She's seen it all, it seems: a year diving with whales in Hawaii, visits to Prince William Sound and the Persian Gulf in the aftermath of colossal oil spills, etc. Her breezy prose won't win her the National Book Award, but few others wear Rachel Carson's mantle as gracefully. That is reason enough to read Sea Change. --Pete Holloran

    Book Description

Internationally renowned as the ambassador-at-large to the world's oceans, Sylvia Earle is an extraordinary woman--the former chief scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a distinguished marine biologist, a veteran of more than 6,000 hours underwater, the founder of an ocean engineering firm, and an eloquent advocate for marine conservation. Sea Change is at once the gripping adventure story of Earle's three decades of undersea exploration, an insider's introduction to the dynamic field of marine biology, and an urgent plea for the preservation of the world's fragile and rapidly deteriorating ocean ecosystems.

Earle takes us along on journeys to places of unimaginable beauty and unutterable destruction. She conjures up the exhilaration of swimming with humpback whales off the coast of Maui; she makes us comprehend the true environmental tragedy of the massive oil spills in Prince William Sound and the Persian Gulf; and she leads us out into Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the epitome of ocean wilderness but also the final resting place for tons of waste that drift in from thousands of miles away. This brilliant, thought-provoking, superbly readable book will inspire a new reverence for the majesty of the world's oceans even as it opens our eyes to the intricate interdependence of all life-forms.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The history and science of oceanography.......2003-01-25

Much of this book is written in the first person, which in places makes it very appealing, but in other places is distracting. My other gripe is that she jumps around a bit in her life time - so one chapter she talks about being the only woman on an expedition, and then she is the 1990's leader of NOAA and then we are back to her childhood haunts and back again.

That being said, it is a good read, full of facts and history. She worked in the sciences back when women were uncommon in the field. Back when there was no scuba gear and Jacques Cousteau was in to spear fishing, not conservation. Interesting stories, indeed! So, if you want an account of oceanography, past and present, its extreme limits and cool equipment from a personal point of view, pick this one up.

4 out of 5 stars A message of The Oceans.......2002-12-10

This book was full of information and facts that I didnt know and found interesting as well as a list of Marine Sanctuaries etc. Sylvia Earle has paved the way for many I really found some of her passages to be inspiring. I will now think everytime I eat shrimp! I would suggest this book to anyone interested in Marine Biology or the Ocean and its conservation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story about the Oceans and the environment.......2001-02-07

Sylvia really opened my eyes to the fragile nature of our environment and to the beauty and vastness of the oceans. I highly recommend this book for anyone with the slightest interest in our environment and nature. This book will make you interested in learning and doing more for the environment.

5 out of 5 stars Learn from one of the best.......1999-05-26

Sea Change is a marine science book written by a master marine scientists. There are very few people around these days who seem to be in full command (or nearly so) of their subject. Sylvia Earle appears to be one of these rare specimens. I think that young scientists also can learn quite a bit through the experiences and personal insights of great scholars like Dr. Earle, insights that usually are not shared with all students, insights, that are normally learned by often painfull experience. Sea Change shows us the development of a science, of an important part of our world, our society and it shows us the personal development of a fascinating woman. If you want to know scientific details about marine science, go and buy a textbook. If you want to know how one of the greatest marine scientists thinks, buy Sea Change.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of marine science, too autobiographical........1999-02-23

This book provides an interesting overview of the development of oceanographic and marine biological sciences. It does a fine job of detailing the envirobnmental issues effecting the ocean in a pretty objective maner. The book focusses too much on the author's (sometimes unrelated) experience, however. I wasn't looking for an autobiography, I wanted to understand the subject matter better. Some background about the author is useful, but it's overdone here in my opinion.

    Book Description

When zoologist Max Terman came to the rescue of a great horned owlet in a Kansas town park, he embarked on an adventure that would test his scientific ingenuity and lead to unprecedented observations of an owl's hidden life in the wild. In Messages from an Owl, Terman not only relates his experiences nursing the starving owlet, "Stripey," back to health and teaching it survival skills in his barn, but also describes the anxiety and elation of letting a companion loose into an uncertain world. Once Terman felt that Stripey knew how to dive after prey, he set the owl free. At this point his story could have ended, with no clue as to what the young bird's fate would be--had it not been for Terman's experimentation with radio tags. By strapping the tags to Stripey, he actually managed to follow the owl into the wild and observe for himself the behavior of a hand-reared individual reunited with its natural environment.

Through this unique use of telemetry, Terman tracked Stripey for over six years after the bird left the scientist's barn and took up residence in the surrounding countryside on the Kansas prairie. The radio beacon provided Terman with information on the owl's regular patterns of playing, hunting, exploring, and protecting. It enabled him to witness the moments when Stripey was bantered and mobbed by crows, when other owls launched fierce attacks, and when a prospective mate caught Stripey's eye. On occasional returns to the barn, the owl would follow Terman around as he performed chores, usually waiting for a handout.

Until now, scientists have generally believed that an owl nurtured by humans becomes ill-adapted for meeting the challenges of life in the wild. Terman's research proves otherwise. Stripey surpassed all expectations by becoming a totally independent wild creature. With Terman, however, Stripey remained tame, allowing the author to explore something one rarely sees in owls: a warm interest in humanity. Terman engagingly re-creates this dimension of Stripey as he describes with humor and compassion the daily challenges of probing the life of a "phantom winged tiger."

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Well balanced.......2002-02-04

This book follows the life of a Great Horned Owl "Stripey", who was abandoned as a 4 week old chick, and raised and subsequently released and observed by Author and Zoologist Max Terman for a study in Animal behaviour. This thoroughly enjoyable book successfully combines scientific observation, reasoning and speculation with the joys and rewards that relationships between humans and animals can bring. Although a factual account, "Messages from an Owl" reads much like a novel, complete with twists in the plot and happy and sad moments. I highly recommend this book, not only for people interested in biology but for anyone who would enjoy following the life and times of two companions, and Owl and a Man.

    5 out of 5 stars Owl Speak!.......2000-04-07

Max Terman has given us a most delightful read. I love the typography and layout. The quotes at the head of each chapter lead us on a challenging "Owl Prowl". What a privilege it would be to go in person and check out Stripey and the other owls with Max. But next best thing is pulling his book off of the shelf and reading it again and again. Each new read brings a new insight into the lives of great horned owls and the life of humans who care about them. The book is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Good read for nature fans.......1999-05-03

I really love this book. Terman writes with an engaging style and he through him I can feel the triumphs and failures of the owl Stripey. It's not often I get attached to an animal I've never met, but this book brings Stripey to life in ways I wouldn't have imagined.

The Hidden Messages in Water 2008 calendar presents the revolutionary work of renowned scientist Masaru Emoto, who discovered that molecules of water are affected by our thoughts, words and feelings. Using high-speed photography, Dr. Emoto shows that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete patterns with dull colors. The implications of this research create a new awareness of how we can positively impact the world around us. Since humans and the earth are composed mostly of water, Emoto's message is one of personal health, global environmental renewal, and a practical plan for peace that starts with each one of us. Sample Caption: "Crystals emerge for only twenty or thirty seconds as the temperature rises and the ice starts to melt. The truths of the cosmos take shape and become visible, if only for a few moments. This short window of time gives us a glimpse into a world that is indeed magical..."

I am a water efficiency consultant. I am fascinated and amazed by the magical beauty of water. But I also recognize that there are many scientific principles that govern the behavior of water. That science does not detract from the beauty and mystery of water for me. I do not need to throw science out the window to appreciate that beauty but apparently many others do. I once watched a 2 hour slide show and talk by Mr. Emoto, hoping to ask questions. He refused to take any questions afterwards, even though I had plenty. Where are the side by side comparisons of the ice structure of the same water that did not have the word or picture influences? Until similar photos are created with a control group and with the involvement of neutral 3rd party scientists, I can not believe any of the claims. But I will always have a childlike amazement at the endless beauty and mystery of water.

    5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2007-09-03

An amazing wake up call. There is a StarTrek episode where an alien calls humans "ugly bags of mostly water"... We are all mostly water and we can create huge changes if we simply focus. Read this book to understand how you can make a huge difference in yourself and the world.

5 out of 5 stars How of the emotions are important for the better world!.......2007-07-20

This book show us how is important for the people to have good feelings and good thoughts. Perhaps, for the sceptic person this kind of experiment doesn't means anything. But I thing it's time to open our minds for the new experiments. The scientists who desagree, they must propose new experiments to refuse.
It's time to people learn that our feelings and thoughts influence matter. All of the atoms and subparticles are vibrating all the time and our thoughts and emotions are vibration too. Hence, the waves are emitted by us influence the atoms and subparticles. So I can't understand the people refuse this kind of experiment without reflection!

    5 out of 5 stars Important analysis.......2002-04-22

There is an apparent contradiction between two verses in Psalms: "The earth is the Lord's" (Ps. 24:1) and "The heavens are the heavens of God, but the earth has given by God to human beings" (Ps. 115:16). According to the Talmud, the apparent discrepancy is cleared up in the following way: Before a person says a b'racha (a blessing), before he/she acknowledges God's ownership of the land and its products, then "the earth is the Lord's"; after a person has said a b'racha, acknowledging God's ownership and that we are stewards to see that God's works are properly used and shared, then "the earth has been given by God to human beings."
Unfortunately, few people have heeded this important lesson. The prevalent view today seems to be not that "the earth is the Lord`s" and that people have an important stewardship role, but rather that people have complete freedom to use and exploit the world for maximum profit. Largely because of this attitude, our world is currently facing many environmental threats related to acid rain, the greenhouse effect, ozone layer depletion, erosion of topsoil, destruction of forests and other habitats, pollution of air, water, and soil, and toxic wastes. It is significant that in its first issue of 1989 Time magazine, instead of choosing its usual person of the year, selected our endangered earth as "planet of the year".
In view of the above, one might wonder where organized religion has been while the earth has been so ravaged. In this context, Lewis Regenstein`s Replenish the Earth provides some extremely good news. It carefully documents that there are very powerful messages in all the world`s major religions and many minor religions on stewardship, conservation, and compassion for animals. Also, it discusses many examples of the recent surge of interest and activity on environmental issues in many religious communities, including Jewish communities.
While the book has material of value to people of all religions, and even to people who profess no religion, there are several sections that are of particular interest to concerned Jews:
    1. The opening chapter discusses the message in the Torah (although that word isn`t used) and other traditional Jewish sources on conservation and kindness to animals;
    2. The views of the prophets on sacrifices is considered;
    3. There is a 38 page chapter on "Judaism: The Jewish Tradition of Kindness" that considers Jewish teachings on vegetarianism, hunting, caring for domestic animals, blood sports, nature and animals in worship, and wildlife conservation. The chapter includes Talmudic and current Jewish writings as well as several stories about Jewish heroes and their relationships with animals.
    4. The book points to vegetarianism as being the diet most compatible with Jewish values, as well as those of other religions.
Mr. Regenstein is superbly qualified to write this book. He is the author of America the Poisoned and How to Survive in America the Poisoned., a book that was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. His articles have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Atlanta Journal and Constitution. He is the Director of the Interfaith Council for the Protection of Animals and Nature in Atlanta, Georgia, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, and vice-president of Help Our Planet Earth. Hence he has an extensive background on both environmental problems as well as religious views on the issues.
As is inevitable in a work of this scope, there are some statements that can be challenged. For example, contrary to Mr. Regenstein`s assertion, the general view of Biblical scholars is that the Biblical prophets condemned not sacrifices as an institution but sacrifices when carried out along with acts of injustice. His statement that through the prophets, "the Lord ordered that (sacrifices) be ended", would be questioned by many people. Also, he should be clearer in indicating that shackling and hoisting are not integral parts of shechita. (Jewish kosher slaughter).
These are relatively small problems in a book that superbly captures the essence of religion`s teachings with regard to nature and to animals. Such teachings provide one more reason why additional knowledgeable, committed religious people should get involved in increasing study and dialogue on connections between religion and the natural world. The realities of today`s environmental crises demand no less. Replenish the Earth is very helpful in efforts to continue dialogues on the important issues that it considers since it has quotes from many religious leaders, 30 pages of footnotes, and an index.
This is an extremely important and timely book. I hope that it will be widely read and that people committed to religious mandates to preserve the earth will see that it gets into the hands of religious leaders of all faiths, that it is widely discussed by religious groups, and that its message is brought to the attention of religious educators.

3 out of 5 stars Broad coverage but not always deep.......2000-04-13

Broad encyclopedic study of Biblical references, but with little depth about social or historical forces that shape these. For example, I would have liked some discussion of the Victorian Naturalist or the American Transcendentalist. Addition there is no discussion about Creation Spirituality of Thomas Berry or Matthew Fox. Also I think the author has unwritten assumptions, about what is right, such as vegetarianism. I would have also liked some discussion of the common ethical issues in the cultures and religion and why the societies do not seem to match the ideals of their respective religions. There is still a lot of useful information, and some common threads in all religions, such as the needless suffering in animals and stewardship. This is probably not a good first book, for someone interested in the subject.

        Book Description

The Hebrew Bible was written by authors who had a very modern idea of basic biology and a deep insight into the functioning of fragile ecosystems. They had a well-founded concept of how nature should be treated so that it would not be degraded but preserved and handed over intact to the next generation. To achieve this goal the sages did not rely on a general feeling of benevolence towards nature but came up with a cogent system of laws which precisely directed their way of handling natural resources. The main goals of these ecological commandments of the Torah were to avoid overuse of the land and to maintain a high diversity of species. This program enabled the Israelites to establish a highly productive sustained agriculture under the rather adverse conditions of a "land of milk and honey."
