Loving This Book!!!.......2007-08-17
I would have given this book more than 5 stars, if I could!
I checked it out via my local library, but will be purchasing it, for sure.
The book is well laid out; you don't have to read the whole thing to get to what you need. There is a section for each cleaning zone of your house, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc...
The recipes for cleaning (also in their own section) are easy to make, and come from readily available, healthy alternatives...and perform much better than their toxic cousins.
I am so impressed at the performance of club soda; I never knew Windex and Glass Plus weren't working that well, until I tried club soda instead. My shiny surfaces look fantastic; at 50 cents a liter, who would want to pay more for chemicals?!
I have also been pleasantly surprised at how soft baking soda makes my laundry; goodbye fabric softener.
This book does a good job of encouraging you to become "more" green; not just for people who want to throw everything out and start over, but for people who want to change one or two things in their house to reduce the negative impact they may have on the environment. The awesome side-effect is, many of the "green" alternatives really do clean better, and are wayyyyy cheaper; trust me, I've cleaned houses for a living, and was one of those suckers who bought a diferent cleaning product for every surface in my home.
I have a 9 mo old in the house 2 days a week, as a part-time nanny, and I am proud to say, there is now nothing in my cleaning cabinet, that I would worry about her getting into; it will remain child-proof, for sure, but, if she drank my window cleaner, now, the worst that would happen is a big club-soda-burp.
Thanks, Green Clean!!!
Very good for some.......2007-08-14
This is a very good book for someone just starting out or who is thinking of "going green" for the first time. It has a lot of common sense information and guidelines on how to clean. It has good basic information on the hazards of commercially made products. Everything is very clearly laid out and the non-paper book is a very good idea for an environmentally friendly cleaning book.
What it is not good for is for someone who already knows the hazards and has been green cleaning for quite some time. I had been looking for something more up to date than my first edition of "Clean and Green" by Annie Berthold-Bond but this one is not it. I am looking forward to trying the "Vinegar of Four Thieves" and maybe a few other of the recipes and I have never seen a guide to laundry labels before (now I will know what all those triangles and little irons really mean). But the rest of the book is full of stuff any environmentally aware person would already know and if I had seen the book before buying, I would not have bought it. I will photocopy a few pages and then recycle the book on to someone to whom would like to begin going green.
Great purchase for everyone.......2007-07-19
I really liked this book and it gave a lot of helpful tips about hot to clean your house using all natural products. The book talks about how harmful all the additives and chemicals in cleaners are and it makes sense. There is a little bit of fluff with just common recommendations about random parts of life but it is very interesting and helpful. I would definately recommend this book.
Bamboozled no more!.......2007-07-03
I used to think I had to use the nuclear option to clean my house. I had to use the harshest chemicals to disinfect and clean. Then I had a baby and read about the dangers that household cleaners pose to her development and decided I'd use a little more elbow grease to keep my family (and the environment) safe. New research has shown that breast cancer, for instance, is more environmental than hereditary. Its cause has been linked to 200 everyday chemicals including the dioxins in household bleach. Another reason I made the switch.
This book has recipes for cleaning and shares the history of cleaning products. After reading it I realized my cleaning choices had been shaped by the successful marketing of companies who were selling dangerous chemicals in pretty bottles. Now, I buy natural, human and environmentally safe products or whip up my own cleaning products on the cheap!
Green advice that's easy to use!.......2007-05-10
I borrowed this book from the library to check it out first. But, now I'm buying it. The beginning could be skipped if you want to get right to the nitty-gritty! :) The recipes for cleaners are at the end and they work well!
I highly recommend this book to save you money and most imporantly, help save the environment!

Customer Reviews:
great book, but supply your own common sense.......2007-10-03
This is a great book, with lots of helpful ideas on ways to clean naturally (and effectively--always important!). She has a more recent book, but this one beats all for its long listing of ways to treat various stains. My only complaint is that sometimes her definition of toxic varies from mine (for instance, she acknowledges that an ounce of borax may be toxic for a 150-lb. person, but then calls for that in many recipes anyway, and she recommends alum in a place or two even though it contains aluminum), and that she's lacking in common sense in a couple of places. A prime example of the latter was one of her recommendations for treating berry stains: from a height of three feet, pour boiling water onto fabric that's stretched tight. Aiaiai! That recipe is almost guaranteed to cause burns, and I'm surprised she lists it, since she also says that MILK will remove berry stains. So it's a great resource, but remember to bring your own common sense to the table when using it.
Missing web addresses.......2007-03-31
This is a good book but none of the companies she mentions have web addresses which would be very helpful.
lots of info.......2007-03-26
This was a big help and had everything I needed answers to.
Very informative although difficult at times to follow.......2006-09-25
I've had this book for quite awhile, actually for a year now and find that it is an excellent reference for green cleaning. Annie provides not only home-made recipes but recommendations for ready-made green products that you can find either online or at your health food store; as well as references to ingredients and resources for additional reading. This was actually the first book that I read about green cleaning and it spurred me on to seek more information and change my house-keeping and cleaning products and habits entirely. For the beginner, though, I would recommend "Clean House, Clean Planet" as it is more instructional as to how to properly mix the ingredients to get the best results.
This small book tends to be overwhelming in its amount of information and sometimes the recipes can be hard to find when you're in a hurry and looking for a particular item. But all in all, like her other book "Better Basics For The Home", it is a gem that would be a wonderful addition to anyone's green clean library.
Info for M. Windsor and others who don't know.......2006-08-22
Grape seed oil is a good source of vitamin E. Both vitamin C and E are used as preservatives because they are anti-oxidants (prevents oxidation or rotting). Check out the labels on the organic or high end "natural" pet foods and you will clearly see them used as preservatives. Sodium chloride (salt) is a preservative (think bacon) and causes water retention and that's why chefs typically use unsalted butter and then add sea salt as needed. So the author of this book was correct.
Book Description
100's of wacky and amazingly helpful uses for ordinary brand-name products!
Every day millions of Americans move about their homes using countless, ordinary, household products. They spread mayo on sandwiches, add flour to pancake batter, or scrub sinks with cleanser. Many, however, have stumbled upon special uses for some of these ubiquitous brand-name products-wacky uses that, believe it or not, work.
Joey Green's hilarious popular Web site is bombarded on a daily basis with innovative uses for brand-name products, from using Efferdent(r) to clean stainless steel sinks to killing head lice with Hellmann's(r) mayonnaise. Now, Green has culled his "wackyuses" database to present his newest volume of tips, hints, and suggestions for hundreds of brand-name products. Each entry explains what chore or problem the product can be used for, along with the name and hometown of the person who contributed the tip. Readers won't believe what some of these products can be used for-Alka-Seltzer(r) to clean a toilet, Jell-O(r) to deodorize smelly feet, Bounce(r) to dissolve soap scum from shower doors, and how about Wilson(r) Tennis Balls to prevent snoring.
Like no other home care resource you've ever seen, Clean It! Fix It Eat It! is sure to prove as entertaining as it is useful.

Helpful problem solver.......2007-01-21
I keep this in my night stand for an easy helpful reference to some frustrating home problems. Terrific book.
CLEAN UP.......2005-09-15
i've enjoyed reading the material which gives advice on
cleaning up what one needs.
Fun reading even if you don't have any white vineger.......2002-10-31
This book can help just about anyone in cleaning anything around the house. Using baking soda, vodka (!), and other assundry items provides one with enjoyable reading as well as imaginative jobs to do in the bathroom, kitchen, and the car.
ZANY AT TIMES, BUT, HEY, IF IT WORKS DON'T KNOCK I.......2001-10-04
Most of us know that common househeld products have multiple uses. For example, vinegar and baking soda are almost staples for solving a dozen and one different household problems. However, some of the solutions you learn in this book might seem right off the wall! Alka-Seltzer to clean a toilet bowl - and just why would you WANT to use Alka-Seltzer? Jello, as a foot deodorizer - no doubt, designed just for those who like that squishy feeling between their toes. Alright, those may seem a little extreme, but the book truly does have it's helpful hints and merits. There is no guarantee that all these little tidbits of information are going to work, and some I would dare not try. If I ever suggested to my darling husband that he shave with Reddi-Whip, he might think I was getting just a wee bit kinky! Some of the tips may seem far-fetched, zany and bizarre but others actually do work; for the price of the book, it is still a good deal.

The Definitive Textbook for the Clean Air Act.......2000-04-25
In my environmental studies, I never found a textbook as informative or specific on the Clean Air Act as Blue Skies Green Politics. Detailed information on environmental challenges in policymaking, the problem with air pollution and updates on how the Act has been amended since 1970 provided much needed data for both exams and research papers. I strongly recommend this to both individuals who are studying environmental policy and science and environmental professionals.

EEEEEEEwwwwwww.......2007-07-12
Very interesting to see the chemical/physical reasons for non-standard use of everyday items. Good fodder for trivia one-upsmanship!
Great ideas.......2007-01-21
Keep this at my bedside for review periodically for those quick fixs for the home.
A Riot of Unconventional Uses for Ordinary Products.......2001-04-29
Joey Green details alternative uses for almost three dozen common products, available at a store near you. He also gives a brief history of each product, ingredients and their web addresses. He also has "strange facts" about the products.
Did you know that Cheez Whiz of Cool Whip are also substitute shaving creams? How about cleaning your toilet with Gatorade, Country Time Lemonade or Dr. Pepper? It's amazing how many things we eat are also effective for house cleaning. Scope and Baby Oil will keep the flies off your horses, too. M&M's are apparently great bass bait, as well as a tasty snack. Cheez Whiz can also prevent "split ends" in your hair.
Some of the uses will crack you up, other make you say "yuch!" But, this is an amusing read that you will find educational, as well. If you want a good laugh and get new insights of the items you have under the sink, in the fridge or on the can shelf, get this book. You can even play "guess what product I'm talking about" with your wife on a long car ride.
No, I don't think I'll shave with Cheez Whiz anytime soon. Cool Whip, maybe......

Customer Reviews:
Great advice for keeping your building free of mold and allergen contaminants.......2007-02-23
I've read Dr Rosen's "Guide to Mold Toxins" on Amazon.com. That book gave me my first glimpse into why some of our employees were more sensitive to mold and allergens than others. And it provided some options and instruction on how to take care of problems.
"Chemical-Free Mold & Mold Toxin Clean-Up & Restoration" takes it from there. This new book is an extensive reference for professional property managers on all aspects of mold and water damage problems. How to properly fix the easy ones, and what you need to know to make sure contractors you might hire for complex problems don't leave things in worse shape than before they started ... which can happen.
This guide has given us confidence to do more work in-house. We are saving money and are getting better results.... fewer complaints.
Management is happy that we are following green building procedures "and" saving money.
Cost effective methods to properly take care of problems with in house staff and when to call in professional help.......2007-02-23
I can't say the book is fun, but it is a lot more fun than attending those boring seminars where you maybe learn 1-2 things in a whole day. This book has the equivalent of 2 weeks of seminars logically layed out in an easy to follow reference format.
It is amazing what we can now do in-house with our maintenance people. And for every day problems we can do the work not only cheaper but better than so-called professional services.
What types of chemicals are used when you call in outside help? Do these chemicals leave residues that can affect some of our sensitive employees (including a certain V.P.)?
This guide has given us a great deal of comfort in this area.
Comprehensive reference for builders, architects and property managers.......2007-02-23
As a property manager, I recommend this guide as an excellent source of information for anyone that has ever had complaints related to mold and/or allergens.
Prevention, remediation, assessment, water damage restoration, legal issues ... all covered in a well organized slide show format. Short explanations and full color pictures ... hundreds of them showing typical problems and cost effective ways to solve such problems.
After reading this book the property manager (or builder) will have a good understanding as to the types of problems to handle in-house and when to call in professional help.
