Customer Reviews:
Best water quality text I have found.......2007-10-08
I have been teaching a water quality field and lab-based methods course for about 10 years, and tried a number of books. While there are many purely aquatic ecology books out there, few also deal well with the applied aspects of aquatic ecosystems that students in natural resources management or environmental science programs are interested in or will deal with when they get jobs in their field. To improve the book further, I would suggest extra material on methods that could be used in lab-based courses.
moderate.......2007-10-01
Good presentation, but it does not explain the basic knowledge of freshwater ecology in wide range.
Fresh!.......2002-03-19
This is the definitive work spelled out in a style that's easy to follow and understand. It's well written and thoroughly researched. Great tome for my major!

Introduction to Limnology
ASIN: 0130337757 |
Book Description
Written from an ecosystem perspective, this user-friendly and thorough book discusses, without the use of jargon, events that happen below the waterline of lakes, rivers, and wetlands and links them back to the attributers of the drainage basins, the overlying atmosphere and climate, which have a major impact on inland waters and their biota. It also contains a large number of easy-to-comprehend figures and tables that reinforce the written material and provide evidence for statements made. The focus on how fundamental limnology applies to environmental management and conservation shows readers that fundamental science can (and does) make a major contribution to solving environmental problems. Chapters 1 and 2 provide a background and history of limnology. Patterns are based on data and photos from all over the world. Emphasis placed on the role of drainage basins, the atmosphere, contaminants, weather and climate in determining the function of aquatic systems. Chapters on acidifying precipitation, organic and trace metal contaminants, and reservoirs integrates the individual topics discussed in the different chapters by bringing it to bear on three major environmental issues. Emphasis on the importance of the spatial, temporal, and interval scales over which research is carried out and conclusions are drawn and the difficulty of scaling up findings. For further study by those with limnology or aquatic management and conservation careers.
Customer Reviews:
Kalff - Limnology.......2006-10-01
My professors chose this book for a 4000/5000 level limnology class and it reads more like an undergraduate/high school text. I don't believe Kalff did a thorough job explaining concepts because he tried to oversimpifly the concepts. Wetzel's LIMNOLOGY is a much better text.
Pleasantly Pleased.......2005-09-01
The book was high above my expectations for the price that I received it at.

Customer Reviews:
Detailed........2001-04-23
I have a nearly complete degree in Geology. Because my special interest is paleontology, I got into sedimentary petrology and geomorphology. It'd been years since I'd read anything on these subjects, so I decided to get back into it by reading the Textbook of Limnology. I enjoyed the first half of the book. It deals with more general information on rivers and lakes and their formation, but I found the later chapters on specific chemistry of fresh water bodies and their flora and fauna more tedious. Unless this is your special area of interest, I suspect you will find it as slow going and unmemorable as I did. This is more a reflection of my own personal interests than a criticism of the content. Certainly for someone with an interest in watershed management this would be a superb general resource. Since I live in Minnesota, a state which has some 10,000 lakes and many rivers including the Mississippi, was covered by and therefore topographically effected by the glaciers, and has a variety of biomes all effected by water distribution, I still found the final chapters of the volume of interest. I've recently started volunteering at the Minnesota Zoo which exhibits animals of the three biomes, so I may reread the text just to get a clearer understanding of the relationship between freshwater bodies and animal life distribution in our state.

A Guide to Common Freshwater Invertebrates of North America
ASIN: 0070461376 |
Customer Reviews:
A Guide to the Study of Fresh-Water Biology.......2000-04-19
A genuine classic used heavily by my students in ecology in several decades of teaching. A detailed glossary is usually sufficient to enable beginners to readily use the keys to identify the most readily observed and collected fresh-water plants and animals. With keys for the identification of all major groups of aquatic life from algae, major invertebrates and common fishes, this compact volume is a delight. In addition, representatives most commonly seen by students are illustrated with accurate, well-labelled line drawings. A brief essay on methods of sampling and analyzing aquatic organisms and their habitats completes this compact, useful guide. To be sure, the references, although significant in their day, are now of historical interest and more interested students and others eager to learn more about aquatic life would need to do some library search for more current work on the aquatic organims featured in this guide.

Fluvial Processes in Geomorphology
ASIN: 140205582X |
Book Description
Stream Ecology by Allan and Castillo is extensively revised and updated from the successful first edition to include major developments over the past decade. Although the subject matter is relatively advanced, this book has been written with the express goal of being accessible to students with only modest backgrounds in ecology and aquatic sciences. The First Edition was widely praised for its readability, and that emphasis is retained. The second edition opens with a new introductory chapter that sets the stage for what follows. The treatment of geomorphology and hydrology are greatly expanded from the first edition, and have been split into two, more substantial chapters. Basal energy resources, trophic roles and food web interactions are retained but thoroughly updated, particularly to include recent advances in microbial ecology and the synergies between producers and decomposers. The discussion of species interactions has been re-organized so that modern topics receive more emphasis, including trophic cascades, subsidies and food web structure. Chapters on organic matter dynamics and nutrient cycling have been substantially re-written to reflect the enormous growth in knowledge of stream metabolism and nutrient processes, the core of ecosystem functioning. The closing chapter on human impacts summarizes the status of river ecosystems and principal threats, and new material that describes advances in river management including the science of environmental flows, the successes and failures of river restoration, and the potential for ecosystem-based catchment management.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding resource!.......2007-03-18
I first bought the 3rd edition several years ago when I went back to DC as a part-time museum intern. On my extremely limited budget, this handy book of maps proved indispensable both for me personally, and on the job during assignments as a fill-in concierge. One look at the well-worn cover and others recognized its usefulness as well.
Maps primarily focus on areas of interest for tourism, embassies, and the downtown business core including The Mall. The two maps of Metro (the subway) show the full metro area system and downtown, the latter of which is detailed enough to show the multiple entrances for each stop down to which side of street. Certain sites and areas rate their own special maps, like the three area airports, the core Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, the White House, historic Alexandria, Georgetown, Embassy Row, and several others. Like the others in the Flashmaps series, there are separate maps identifying hotels, restaurants, transportation, shopping, and other general areas of interest; hotels and restaurants do have a price guide range identified by dollar signs. The WWII Memorial was built/completed after the 6th edition came out, so it does not appear on the maps yet.
The book consists entirely of maps. If you're looking for sight-seeing blurbs containing verbose details, buy an additional resource since this book contains none. If you're visiting Northern Virginia and/or Maryland, I recommend buying additional map(s) (especially if you're driving) as these areas are not covered in depth.
As hotels have changed hands, embassies have moved, and phone numbers are no longer the same, last year I opted to purchase the 6th edition. Even knowing my way around, this book is still as helpful during my annual return trips as when I first bought it.
