Customer Reviews:
it's still the ultimate toxicology book.......2007-09-09
there is not that much to say, really. Casarett & Doull's Tox book has been THE toxicology textbook for the past years. This edition has a few additions and changes, but not that many, so older editions are still worthwhile. However, anyone in the environmental science field, toxicology, carcinogenesis or related subjects, you should have this as a reference book. period.
Hopeless.......2007-06-12
As a doctoral graduate in toxicology and now a practicing preclinical toxicologist for several years, I rate this book not only as "poor", but poorer with each new edition.
Consider Goodman & Gilman's Pharmacology. Like C&D, it is a text with nearly as many authors as chapters, and covers diverse subject material. UNlike G&G, though, Casarett & Doull's painfully lacks the editorial wisdom, guidance, and "tie-together" of the exceedingly disparate chapters. As a result, there is a lot of overlap, and a lot of gaps.
In case you graduate students haven't figured it out, this book is essentially the manual for the ABT cert exam. In my opinion, that is the only thing keeping it in print. Otherwise most of us in practice would have a book that covers chapter 6, and then separate references for our area of work. As a preclinical toxicologist, for example, I couldn't give two hoots in hell about air pollution or toxic effects of plants.
If you can only buy 1 toxicology reference, make it this one.......2004-08-25
I found this to be an outstanding and thorough treatment of the entire gamut of toxicology. The book is well organized, with a very logical sequence of chapters. Each chapter is authored by recognized experts in the various subspecialties of toxicology, such as neurotoxicology. The principles and model systems of each specialty are discussed in detail. This text contains no fluff. I recommend it for graduate level students and above, though ambitious undergraduates may find it useful as well. My only suggestions for improvement would be updated figures and a glossary of terms. I sometimes found that authors of the earlier chapters would use terms which were not defined until later chapters. Overall, this is an excellent reference--well worth the price.
errors in the book.......2004-04-27
That is a good book for the beginner of toxicologist. However, many existed errors may mislead and confuse the beginners. So I recommend that we'd wait for next edition.
Many errors.......2004-04-27
That is a really good book for the beginer of toxicologist. However, there are many errors existed and those errors could mislead and confuse the beginer. I think that we'd better wait for next editions.

These days, more and more people are saying no to "better living through chemistry" and yes to a lifestyle that is less toxic and more environmentally friendly. This trend toward a more natural lifestyle has become something of a crusade for Annie Berthold-Bond, author of Better Basics for the Home. After developing hypersensitivity to even very low concentrations of chemicals, Berthold-Bond was forced to rid her life of as many toxins as possible. "It wasn't until I had to be away from chemicals that I began to realize how many we lived with. The extent of the contamination is startling--from hair spray and floor wax to dandelion killers and plastic shower curtains and other products that line our hardware stores and supermarket shelves."
This book represents the culmination of her search for a more sustainable lifestyle. Taking her cue from an earlier time, Berthold-Bond, former editor in chief of Green Alternatives for Health and Environment, offers more than 800 simple and practical alternatives to common household toxins, covering everything from skin care to gardening. And the good news is that adopting her suggestions and formulas isn't hard at all. "Mixing up face creams or wood stain isn't much different than cleaning the windows with vinegar, soap, and water instead of using Brand Name X, or making a cake with flour, eggs and milk instead of buying a mix," see asserts. "With a few simple staples we can clean our houses, wash our hair, rid the dog's bed of fleas, and do many other things as well." If you have your doubts, here is her formula for metal polish:
3 teaspoons salt, 1 tablespoon flour, and enough white distilled vinegar to make a paste. Scoop the paste onto a clean sponge, and polish the metal clean. Rinse with hot water and buff dry.
Sure, these days it's literally impossible to lead a life that is completely toxin-free. But you can significantly reduce your exposure, and picking up a copy Better Basics for the Home is a great way to get started.
Customer Reviews:
less toxic living.......2007-10-01
It's amazing all the products you can clean with that are already in your kitchen and, more importantly, not toxic.
Loved it!.......2007-07-26
This is an excellent guide for a less toxic living approach. It provides you with 868 easy to make natural and chemical free formulas for Household Cleaners, Skin & Hair Care, Lawn and Garden Care, Paint, Art Projects and so much more. It's a great resource to have around. I really liked how most of the recipes only call for a couple of ingredients and are really easy to make. And best of all they work too. One of my favorites is the Aloe Vera Moisturizer with Avocado Oil. It's the only Moisturizer I still use for my face and it works great!
Highly recommend this book!
Hard to find items..........2007-06-19
I really enjoyed many of the household cleaning products in this book but when it came to purchasing the products needed for the skin care I found it really disappointing. The websites that are given to purchase products (soap bark, plumeria flower essence, powdered Vit A) cannot be purchased anywhere. There are no suggestions as to what alternatives can be used. I am really frustrated at having to spend hours and hours of research time trying to track down these items.
Great.......2007-06-02
Thank's for all of the great reviews. Even though I read them I still checked it out at the library first. When it was time to return it, I knew I had to buy it. I love this book!
Better Basics for the Home: Simple Solutions for Less Toxic Living.......2007-05-12
It is a wonderful book with everything I was looking for!

Book Description
This comprehensive interdisciplinary text draws from the social sciences, the natural sciences and the health sciences to introduce students to the principles and methods applied in environmental health. It presents an overview of the basic sciences needed to understand environmental health hazards, including toxicology, microbiology, health physics, injury analysis and relevant psychosocial concepts. It also presents a basic approach to risk assessment and risk management. The first part of the book concentrates on broad issues, providing frameworks for the investigation and management of environmental health problems. The middle section deepens the discussion of routes of exposure (air quality, water and sanitation, food and agricultural issues). The final section addresses environmental health from sustainable development themes (settlements and urbanization, energy, industry, and global concerns). The final chapter focuses on ethical issues and action planning. Thus, the text aims to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes in environmental health.

basic Environmental Health.......2006-01-12
Environmental health is a primary concern of many university teaching and research curricula within a variety of academic degree programs that usually include the word "environmental' such as biology, engineering, ethics, law, management, medicine, planning, politics, and sociology. Therefore, it is difficult to write a textbook that coherently captures the essence of the methods and applications used in all of these disciplines.
In three sections, Basic Environmental Health succeeds in conveying key concepts and methods widely regarded as pillars of environmental-health science--namely, the survey of environmental risk factors, human exposure assessment, and source characterization and mitigation. A unique feature that is rarely found in older introductory books on environmental health is the section on sustainable development, which includes chapters on urbanization, energy, industry, and global concerns. This wider approach owes much to the book's sponsorship by a coalition of international agencies including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and the Conference of European University Rectors.
Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives and ends with a set of challenging study questions. Special case studies, definitions, and emerging paradigms are highlighted in accessible boxes throughout the book. Teachers will appreciate the supplementary materials, including a guide with interactive exercises, a chart book, and a set of transparency slides.

Book Description
The state of the environment has become a major health issue. A broad range of illnesses have been linked to environmental factors such as toxic waste, cigarette smoke, acid rain, smog, and new chemical compounds. These disorders include cancers, reproductive disorders, birth defects, respiratory illnesses, immune system deficiencies, allergies and hypersensitivity disorders, nervous system abnormalities, and diseases of body organs including the kidney, liver, and intestine.
Environmentally Induced Disorders Sourcebook examines the cause-and-effect relationship between people, the environment, and health. Material in the book will help the layperson identify environmental risks, explore controversial issues, and better understand the implications of current research initiatives. Methods of treating, avoiding, and coping with environmentally induced illnesses are also covered.

Guide Still a Great Reference.......2007-01-11
Bear in mind the book was published in 1992. But the text has withstood the test of time. It's a wealth of information for pesticide educators that can now be supplemented by on-line information. To give you a clue, I don't plan to sell my used copy because of the extensive pesticide-specific data, and the excellent articles I can't find anywhere else. A tribute to Rachel herself.

Book Description
This volume provides a brief but important summary of the essential tests that need to be performed on all new compounds--whether they are new drugs, pesticides or food additives--before they can be registered for use in the United Kingdom. These basic tests for mutagenicity, originally drawn up by the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society in 1983 have now been fully revised under the auspices of expert working groups from academia and industry and in collaboration with the UK Department of Health. This volume therefore provides the latest official guidelines and recommendations for all scientists involved in the testing and registration of new compounds not only in the UK, but in wider international context. The four main test procedures for measuring mutagenicity described in this volume are bacterial mutation assays, metaphase chromosome aberration assays in vitro, gene mutation assays in cultured mammalian cells, and in vivo cytogenetics assays. Each of these tests is fully explained and described in practical and procedural detail, with additional information on the presentation and data processing of results.
