Aimed at a wide range of end-users encompassing postgraduates, postdoctoral research scientists, established researchers and specialist scientists, the authors describe and evaluate molecular techniques and applications in this increasingly important area.
Topics include the molecular methods for the direct detection of pathogens such as E. coli O157:H7, MRSA and other important bacterial infections, medical viruses, medical parasites, dental plaque bacteria and haematological malignancies. Also covered is the molecular recognition and detection of catastrophic bio-threat agents as a consequence of global terrorism.

DNA Amplification: Current Technologies and Applications (Horizon Bioscience)
Vadim V., Ed. Demidov Manufacturer: BIOS Scientific Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0954523296 |
Book Description
The Horizon Scientific Press titles focus on high-level microbiology and molecular biology topics. Written by internationally renowned and highly respected leaders in the field, they comprise of review manuals, practical manuals, and reference texts for research scientists, bioscience professionals and graduate students.
DNA amplification is the cornerstone of modern biotechnology and it is also a key procedure in numerous basic studies involving DNA and other biomolecules. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is still the most popular amplification method; however, alternatives to PCR have successfully invaded the area. The emergence of such methodologies has significantly widened the range of approaches for DNA amplification and dramatically improved the technological abilities of basic and applied researchers in various fields of life sciences.
While most books on DNA amplification focus on PCR-based technologies, this volume presents a wider range of methods to amplify DNA with an emphasison their diverse applications. The book covers both well-established and newly-developed protocols including ligation-based thermocycling approaches, real-time PCR and other new PCR developments, plus several powerful non-PCR isothermal DNA amplification techniques, for example, real-time strand displacement amplification (SDA), rolling-circle amplification (RCA) and multiple-displacement amplification (MDA). An entire section is devoted to a group of enzymes, both natural and engineered, which are employed for DNA amplification and related purposes. In addition, the use of DNA amplification in the detection of non-DNA analytes is presented.
Written and edited by leading experts in the field, DNA Amplification serves as a practical tool and an invaluable reference source for a broad audience of academic researchers and industry biotechnologists who use DNA amplification techniques.

Physical Chemistry for the Bioscience
Raymond Chang Manufacturer: University Science Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1891389335 |
Book Description
Chang's newest text has been shortened, streamlined and optimized for a one-semester introductory course in physical chemistry for students of biosciences. Most students enrolled in this course have taken general chemistry, organic chemistry, and a year of physics and calculus. Only basic skills of differential and integral calculus are required for understanding the equations. For premedical students, this text will form the basis for taking courses like physiology in medical school. For those intending to pursue graduate study in biosciences, the material presented here will serve as an introduction to topics in biophysical chemistry courses, where more advanced texts such as those by Gennis, van Holde, and Cantor & Schimmel are used. The author's aim is to emphasize understanding physical concepts rather than focus on precise mathematical development or on actual experimental details. The end-of-chapter problems have both physiochemical and biological applications.

Tutorials in Mathematical Biosciences II: Mathematical Modeling of Calcium Dynamics and Signal Transduction (Lecture Notes in Mathematics / Mathematical Biosciences Subseries)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 3540254390 |
Book Description
This book presents a series of models in the general area of cell physiology and signal transduction, with particular attention being paid to intracellular calcium dynamics, and the role played by calcium in a variety of cell types. Calcium plays a crucial role in cell physiology, and the study of its dynamics lends insight into many different cellular processes. In particular, calcium plays a central role in muscular contraction, olfactory transduction and synaptic communication, three of the topics to be addressed in detail in this book. In addition to the models, much of the underlying physiology is presented, so that readers may learn both the mathematics and the physiology, and see how the models are applied to specific biological questions.
It is intended primarily as a graduate text or a research reference. It will serve as a concise and up-to-date introduction to all those who wish to learn about the state of calcium dynamics modeling, and how such models are applied to physiological questions.

Techniques in Prion Research (METHODS AND TOOLS IN BIOSCIENCES AND MEDICINE)
Sylvain, Ed. Lehmann Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3764322241 |
Book Description
Prion diseases, also known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs), exist in both humans (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)) and animals (scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), chronic wasting disease) and have the unique property of being infectious, sporadic or genetic in origin.
Although the precise nature of the infectious agent responsible for TSEs is not definitely identified, it is now clearly demonstrated that a protein named PrP (for Prion Protein) plays a critical role in the transmission and pathogenesis of TSEs.
This book provides the general description as well as the details of the techniques currently used for the study of prion diseases. Taking into account the pivotal role played by PrP it is not surprising that many Chapters of this book deal with the purification, the detection and the characterization of the different forms of this protein. In addition, in vitro, cellular and animal models specifically adapted to the study of TSEs, as well as bio-safety procedures are described. Each Chapter is written by scientists involved for many years in their respective domain of prion biology who give the best of their knowledge in this technical document. This volume is a very useful tool for any laboratory which recently decided to contribute to the study of TSEs as well as for teams already engaged in this field for many years but interested in extending their technical capacity toward new methods.
Features:
Purification of PrPC and the Pathological Isoform of Prion Protein (PrPsc or PrP-res)

ASIN: 0521618002 |
Book Description
Recent advances in experimental methods have resulted in the generation of enormous volumes of data across the life sciences. Hence clustering and classification techniques that were once predominantly the domain of ecologists are now being used more widely. This book provides an overview of these important data analysis methods, from long-established statistical methods to more recent machine learning techniques. It aims to provide a framework that will enable the reader to recognise the assumptions and constraints that are implicit in all such techniques. Important generic issues are discussed first and then the major families of algorithms are described. Throughout the focus is on explanation and understanding and readers are directed to other resources that provide additional mathematical rigour when it is required. Examples taken from across the whole of biology, including bioinformatics, are provided throughout the book to illustrate the key concepts and each techniqueâs potential.
