Book Description
The definitive ecological guide to the Gulf of Mexico Estuaries
Today the ecological health of the Gulf of Mexico—long the base of vast commercial fisheries—is at risk from a potent array of threats, from increased nutrient inputs to the loss of coastal wetlands that impact water quality.
Never before has knowledge of the biogeochemical processes of the Gulf's estuaries and wetlands been so critical to its preservation, and yet until now research on this vital area has been fragmented.
Biogeochemistry of Gulf of Mexico Estuaries offers a comprehensive, integrated examination of these vital natural resources and their ecology. Featuring contributions from a diverse group of expert scientists from all regions of the Gulf Coast, this interdisciplinary reference provides extensive coverage of what is known about biogeochemical processes—and the factors that regulate them—in warm temperate and subtropical systems. Organized around a framework that integrates geomorphology, sedimentary processes, nutrient cycling, and trace metals chemistry, it not only demonstrates how the Gulf's estuarine systems work, but also establishes a basis for how they compare with other, better-studied temperate estuaries. In addition, the book features a fascinating—and timely—examination of the effects of biogeochemical processes on estuarine management.
Biogeochemistry of Gulf of Mexico Estuaries will be welcomed by ecologists, marine scientists, environmental activists, and anyone involved with managing these precious natural resources.

Oldie but goodie.......2006-04-12
I did a search on Ledray just to see if she's written anything on solo travel since this book was published almost 20 years ago. I am still patiently awaiting volume 2. It's one of my all-time favorite travel books, and still has some relevence today. Her format is to devote a chapter to each of several trips detailing how they would be suitable for a solo traveler. Think Kentucky Derby, a spa in Baden-Baden, the Orient Express, dog sledding. If you can find one, buy it. It will fuel your imagination and you can always find updated information. But her suggestions for, say, the Derby are right on today as they were back in '88.

It was only a slap. Well, maybe more than one. And maybe Nick used his fist at the end when the anger got out of control. But his girlfriend Caitlin deserved it--hadn't she defied him by singing in the school talent show when he had forbidden her to display herself like that? Even though he'd told her that everybody would laugh at her because she couldn't sing and was a fat slob? Both were lies. Because Caitlin was so beautiful, the only person who understood him. Out of his desperate need for her came all the mean words and the hitting. But now Caitlin's family has procured a restraining order to keep Nick away, and the judge has sentenced him to Mario Ortega's Family Violence class, to sit around every week with six other angry guys who hit their girlfriends. And to write a journal explaining how he got into this mess.
Other teen novels--most strikingly Dreamland by Sarah Dessen--have shown dating violence from the point of view of a young girl trapped in an abusive relationship, but in Breathing Underwater, first-time novelist Alex Flinn tackles the difficult task of making us understand, if not sympathize with, the motivation of a violent young man. The story, like Rob Thomas's stylistically similar Rats Saw God, proceeds in two different time frames: the journal in which Nick relives the course of his tender but stormy love affair with Caitlin and the time after the restraining order, in which a desperate and friendless Nick struggles to understand and overcome his anger. This extraordinarily moving novel is highly relevant reading for all young men in our violence-prone society. (Ages 13 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Like father,
like son
Intelligent, popular, handsome, and wealthy, sixteen-year-old Nick Andreas is pretty much perfect -- on the outside, at least. What no one knows -- not even his best friend -- is the terror that Nick faces every time he is alone with his father. Then he and Caitlin fall in love, and Nick thinks his problems are over. Caitlin is the one person who he can confide in. But when things start to spiral out of control, Nick must face the fact that he's gotten more from his father than green eyes and money.
Customer Reviews:
"I Think It's About Being a Loser".......2007-06-27
The first novel by Alex Flinn tackles a somewhat normal subject in an abnormal way. She takes the road less traveled: Writing about dating violence through the eyes of the abuser. Nick Andreas is a teenager who seems perfect. He's a football player, he lives in an upper-class neighborhood, and he's got a beautiful girlfriend, Cailtin. He's got perfect, popular friends and a perfect life, right? Wrong.
Atleast, most of this seemed true until he got out of control one day with Caitlin. And another day, and another day. Finally, Caitlin has enough when Nick beats her badly for participating in a talent show against his will. She calls the relationship off, and files for a restraining order against Nick. He's not to talk to her in any way. The judge orders him to attend anger management classes for six months and keep a journal explaining how things went from when he first tried to get together with Caitlin to when she broke up with him. Each entry was to be 500 words per week.
At first, Nick didn't think he really had a problem. He doesn't belong in the anger management class with the other psychos. But as Nick takes the classes and writes in his journal, he begins to realize that he does have a problem. Through listening to the other guys talk in class, he learns that he's no different than them. He's quick to assume his girlfriend is cheating when she doesn't show up on time and he tries to control aspects of her life. He finally accepts his problem and even goes back to anger management classes even when his time was up.
I think the best thing about this book is the POV through which it's told. Telling the story by the abuser and not the abused is a unique twist. You see firsthand how he is affected by his own actions and how he comes to terms with losing Caitlin. You also see how he reacts to his father's constant abuse and controlling behavior as well. Flinn's job was to make the reader understand why Nick was abusive without excusing his actions. In my opinion, the job was well done.
I would recommend this book to any teenager looking for a good read. It has a good plot, believable characters, and an ending that's not so happy, which adds more to the reality of the story. I even think some teenage boys would be able to learn a little bit from it. It's an excellent novel for both genders, however. Go ahead and pick it up.
Breathing Underwater.......2007-06-14
By Alex Flinn
Nick is rich and popular and gets along with just about everyone. But no one sees what is hiding behind those traits; his father hits him. When he meets his g/f Caitlin he thinks that she will solve all of his problems, but little does he know that his possessiveness and jealousy will quickly turn into control and rage. Heir relationship quickly results in a restraining order and mandatory sentence to attend a family violence class.
My favorite part was when she was fat and became skinny, and Nick uses her low self esteem on his raging outbursts.
You have to take responsibility for your own actions even if that means giving something up in return. Nick has to learn that he does have an anger problem and he let it go too far. Now he has lost his girlfriend.
The author retells the actual story in a different perspective and tells the true story and what is going on in the present. It has really good dialogue as if it were a true story. Anyone should read this book because it really sounds like a teenager wrote it.
Abusive Relationship.......2007-04-23
Nick is in a courtroom, sitting with his father, who is exceptionally angry. Nick is there because his ex-girlfriend, Caitlin, wants to get a restraining order against him. He doesn't really understand why she is doing this. He really only hit her once, not like his father hits him on a regular basis. It's not like he really abused her or she should be afraid of him or anything. After all, he loves her.
Caitlin is granted the restraining order, and Nick is ordered to go to anger management classes and to write a journal of his thoughts about himself or his relationship every day. He is reluctant at first, but then he misses Caitlin so much that he really starts to enjoy writing about the good times that the two of them had when they were dating. But through his journal and by interacting with the others in his anger management class, Nick begins to see things in a whole new light. Will he finally see the error of his ways, or is he destined to treat women poorly his whole life?
I liked the evolution of Nick's character, and the ways he saw himself through the eyes of others when he started hanging around with Leo and saw the way Leo treated his girlfriend. I was frustrated when Nick acted like he hadn't done anything wrong, though, and he couldn't even see a problem when he was writing about the awful things he had said or done. I also didn't like the character of Tom; I thought he should have been a stronger force in Nick's life all along, trying to figure out what was going on with him instead of dropping him.
Generations of anger.......2007-04-11
What goes around, comes around. Nick's father hit him. Nick hit Caitlin. Caitlin got a restraining order. Okay. So it seems simple, but that's the basis on which this interesting book is built on. We see that Nick is troubled by everything that's happened and through his stories of the past and what he deals with now, we see that he's struggling to cope.
It's strange to get a story where we view the abuser as opposed to the abused. It's easy to sympathize with a girl whose boyfriend hits her, but to like and sympathize with a boy who hit his girlfriend because she did something he didn't want her to do? It seems impossible, but here, in "Breathing Underwater", we do exactly that. At first it seems counter-intuitive, but by the end it's so "ohh", and I was able to understand Nick.
So what goes around comes around. And now Nick has to sit in classes that teach him why he shouldn't hit his girlfriend. It takes him a while, but soon Nick realizes what it is. He sees the situation from the eyes of an observer and he understands.
What I liked about this book was that it showed the other side of the relationship (the guy side). It made it more interesting than another victim story. I liked how it was done, but I think that it was too short, with not enough information and feeling.
Recommended.
You owe it to yourself to read this........2007-03-17
Seeing this boy slowly become like his father is some of the most gut wrenching drama you'll be exposed to in a long time. Such a powerful book that actually brought me to tears. It really hurts, and sometimes when putting book down you reflect on your very actions in life and are inspired by the constant punches it throws at you. Very good book and should not be missed. God its great.

Book Description
"A hilarious and daring portrait of growing up gay in the American South. One roots for Lily as one does for Huck Finn. This beautifully written debut novel explores the fragile links between a girl's growing awareness of her sexuality and the far-reaching effects this has upon her family."-Pamela Ball, author of
Lava and
The Floating City
In 1970s Chattahoochee, Florida, where the main employer is a mental institution, it's sink or swim for Lily. When her mama, a former beauty queen who once dreamt of being Miss Florida, takes Lily and her siblings fishing one morning, Lily nearly drowns while her mother looks on, "weighing her gains against her losses." Lily proves to be a survivor, which she will need to prove again and again, as she struggles to stay afloat amidst her mother's slow mental deterioration, her first love, and her quest to come to terms with who she is and what she wants from this crazy world. With lyrical prose, Lu Vickers gives voice to Lily's inner soul, and in turn reveals how universal our needs and desires are.

Breathing Underwater.......2007-01-21
Saying Lu Vickers is a very descriptive writer is like saying Water is wet. Her story envelops you with the smells, sounds and sights of North Florida. Emotions are as smothering as swamp water.

Chattahoochee.......2007-01-18
For those of us who grew up in small town North Florida, this fine portrait of life in '60-'70's Chattahoochee awakened mixed memories. Very clear and pungent prose.
5 star novel.......2007-01-06
What a beautifully-crafted novel: a distillation of Southern small town yearning, dreams, humor, darkness. Layers of unexpected twists and turns run through the writing; images of both the underwater and above ground life add depth. I highly recommend this lyrical, smooth novel-

Customer Reviews:
Hard to find rebreather information.......2002-04-05
Good information on purchasing, using and caring for a rebreather. I purchased and maintain my rebreather using info from this book. The book covers all types of rebreathers.
More than "Rebreathers for dummies".......2000-07-03
One of the authors writes, "This book is the 'rebreathers for dummies' text". While not a technical text, per se, it is much more than a "dummies" handbook. It is a concise, well-written guide to both the history and current state of rebreather diving systems. It is also well-illustrated, with excellent diagrams and tables. After reading this book the reader will have a good grounding in rebreather technology, and its important safety issues, and be able to not only evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of the increasing number of recreational rebreathers being offered for sale, but whether this kind of technical diving is really suited for them. Rebreathers do not suffer fools, and this kind of diving is not a substitute for the relative simplicity of open circuit SCUBA using compressed air. By the way, while not mandatory, it is invaluable if the reader is familiar with the principles of Nitrox diving.
Rebreather.......2000-01-13
If you understand the concept of Nitrox diving, this book will give you a very detailed and helpfull overview about the diffrent rebreather which are on the market. Before I took my rebreather lessons in Switzerland, I had read the entire book and I did not have any problems during the lessons. I can recomened this book for people who are interessted in rebreather diving.

The Dao of Taijiquan: Way to Rejuvenation (Tai Chi)
ASIN: 1556431678
Release Date: 1993-07-30 |
Book Description
Apart from its physical benefits, the practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan can foster emotional health and psychological well-being. Author Margaret Emerson, a longtime student and teacher of T’ai Chi, examines how the skills developed in the practice of T’ai Chi Ch’uan—awareness, concentration, mobility, and flexibility—can enrich our personal and professional lives. When integrated as a daily practice, T’ai Chi Ch’uan can enhance health, creativity, and encounters with friends, family, and strangers.
Customer Reviews:
T'ai Chi Ch'uan in our lives.......2005-12-29
In "Breathing Underwater: The Inner Life of T'ai Chi Ch'uan," Margaret Emerson places her longtime practice and teaching of this art in her daily life. She describes a life-threatening ailment that first brought her to the practice, together with changes in diet, nutritional treatments, meditation, visualization, and other healing techniques-she used, as she puts it, the shotgun method. She believes these changes and additions to her life combined to bring about her healing, and notes, "None of these measures is extraordinary. They require patience and diligence, but the rewards are so obvious on so many levels that the motivation is always with me."
Paramount for Emerson are the healing practices and spiritual growth afforded by the practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan, but she explores also the martial aspects of the art, and she has come to believe that "life is a martial art and requires precisely training of mind and body that I derive from my practice....Qualities like balance, concentration, flexibility, and fast reflexes come in handy when we're dealing with ourselves, our work, friends, family, and strangers."
She quotes Miyamoto Musahi, a 17th-century samurai, who was also a master of drawing, painting and sculpture: "When you have attained the way of strategy there will not be one thing you cannot understand....You will see the Way in everything." Similarly for Emerson, T'ai Chi Ch'uan provides a pattern that she uses in everything she does, and her spare, precise, sometimes luminous prose draws readers effortlessly to share her experience.
--Stephanie T. Hoppe, author, Sharp Spear, Crystal Mirror: Martial Arts in Women's Lives
Breathing Underwater.......2005-11-19
Margaret Emerson's writing has all the grace of a skillfully performed T'ai Chi sequence. As she describes the slow motion meditation that she practices, she shows how the movements are linked, practically and metaphorically to our other activities, our health, and to the whole of our lives. Like her art, Breathing Underwater is a gentle yet disciplined approach to looking at ourselves, becoming centered, finding balance, and moving with grace and energy.
This is an accessible and inspiring work for the beginning or accomplished martial artist, as well as for those simply interested in deepening their appreciation of their life, breath, and movement.
describes an execellent personal understanding of tai chi........1997-08-05
This books describes, in a personal way, a deep understanding of tai chi. The sort of book that seems to be written by an old friend, by a chance meeting on our crossing paths.
A non technical book, but a book that allows tai chi to reflect the our personal growth/development (or breathing the sweet air, in tai chi speak!).
Carries on the work of Girda Geddes and Bob Klien.
The book holds a braveness of heart that encourages us to explore ourselfs with tai chi.
Marageret helps to disolve the barrier of teacher/pupil; a book well worth reading.
Thank you Margeret.
